Loeb proves his F1 pace

World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb did the WRC community proud on Monday when he set a remarkable pace in a Formula 1 car at the series’ official test in Barcelona.

Loeb was invited to join the Red Bull Racing team for the day as a reward from his Citroen Team’s sponsors for winning the 2008 WRC drivers’ title. Rather than just enjoying the experience, however, Sebastien delivered a string of competitive laps and was even able to help the team with its 2009 season development work.

The 4.65km circuit was extremely busy throughout the day as all but one of the teams (Toyota) took the opportunity to test. Following a 100km shakedown at Silverstone last week Loeb was quickly into the groove when the session started at 0900hrs. Conditions remained dry all day and enabled Loeb to push the car harder than he had in the wet at Silverstone.

After spending most of the morning settling in and finding a good balance with the car Loeb carried out some serious work in the afternoon, evaluating the Bridgestone slick tyres that will be used in 2009 and providing the team with valuable data. In total the Frenchman completed 82 laps and at one point posted the sixth fastest time.

The fact that most teams were experimenting with a variety of 2008 and 2009 tyre, aero and other components made it impossible to benchmark Loeb’s performance against that of the other drivers, but his best lap of 1m22.503s was less than two seconds adrift of the fastest of the day, set by Takuma Sato of Scuderia Torro Rosso.

Under the guidance of Daniele Casanove, one of Mark Webber’s engineers, Loeb even felt comfortable enough to experiment with some set-ups of his own. “It was a very exciting experience and a big pleasure to have the opportunity to drive here,” said Loeb. “To start with I just tried to understand quickly how it all worked and then tried to improve. Later on I tried to change the settings a little - but maybe not in the right way because the times were not improving and even I felt I could go a bit faster. But I felt in some places I wasn’t far from what I should be capable of with the car. I think the most impressive thing was the brakes. You have to heat then strongly but it’s incredible how late you can brake. I tried in some places to brake later and later but I still wasn’t on the limit - it’s really impressive.”

Although the session was not a true competitive experience Loeb was able to get a sense of the car-to-car combat which - short of Super Specials - isn’t a feature of the WRC. “Today was not like a race so when I saw someone faster in my mirrors I pulled over to the opposite side of the track,” he explained. “Anyway, I think you learn more when you’re driving alone and then speak to the engineers and look at the data. But I did overtake. I followed one car for quite a while, I was closing and he stopped to let me past, so that was okay, but for sure at these speeds it must be something special to fight on a track.”

A senior source within the team had nothing but praise for the way Loeb had adapted to the F1 environment: “We were really, really impressed. Seb came in and has not put a foot wrong in conditions which haven’t always been easy. Not only has he set good times today but he has the right attitude too. He’s showed a lot of professionalism. We were expecting to be pleasantly surprised and we weren’t disappointed.”

Verstappen backs Bernie's 'medals' idea

os Verstappen, a former formula one driver from Holland, has added a lone voice of support to the concept of an Olympic Games-style 'medals' scoring system.

F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone is pushing for the scheme to be introduced for next year, with the aim of compelling drivers to prioritise race wins rather than mere points.

"There are a lot of people who have ridiculed this suggestion, and honestly I have to admit at first that I thought the stress of divorce had got to him," Verstappen, 36, wrote in his column in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

"But I think he actually has a point. Like him, I think the winner of the most races in a season should automatically be the world champion."

But Verstappen, who raced the last of his 107 grands prix for Minardi in 2003, believes Ecclestone's concept could be achieved simply by reverting to awarding the winner with a bigger margin over second place.

Prior to 2003, second place-getters scored only 6 points, compared to the current 8.

Verstappen said: "It would be much more of an incentive for the driver in second place to do everything he can to catch up the front runner.

"At the moment, too often you see that drivers are happy to settle for their position, because the risk of trying to improve is too high."

Schumacher promotes responsible drinking

Bacardi Limited, as part of its responsible drinking "Champions Drink Responsibly" campaign, is providing the drive of a lifetime: the opportunity to be in the passenger seat next to Michael Schumacher, the world's most successful Formula One race driver - and the world's most famous designated driver.

Schumacher, who is the firm's Social Responsibility Ambassador, will drive 28 adults from select markets around the world on a race track circuit to raise awareness about the critical message of responsible drinking.

The seven-time World Champion and each of his passengers will drive full-throttle rides around the exclusive Ascari Race circuit in southern Spain to demonstrate his expert handling of a high performance car to highlight how champions stay in control in various environments.

"I am eager to spread this message that drinking and driving don't mix. It is a topic I personally feel strongly about," said Schumacher.

This promotion is part of a Bacardi Limited global social responsibility campaign launched in April, which has touched millions of adults already, to encourage drivers to know the options available to avoid drinking and driving: using public transportation, taking a taxi, designating a driver, or drinking non-alcoholic cocktails if they must drive.

Seamus McBride, President and CEO of Bacardi Limited, explained that his company and Schumacher teamed up "because we share a passion for educating consumers about the dangers of drinking and driving."

Schumacher will be taking adult prize winners around the five-kilometre track at Ascari, which boasts corners designed to emulate legendary racing curves including Eau Rouge, Paddock Hill and the Karrousel.

These rides will also be a first for the racing legend: "I have not driven the Ascari circuit before so this will be a new and exciting experience for me as well."

"I will be looking out for those bends that have been modelled on F1 circuits that I have raced on over the years. This will be an opportunity for lucky winners to enjoy the experience of a lifetime," added Schumacher.

The "Champions Drink Responsibly" social responsibility campaign also includes television, print and on-line advertising that features Michael Schumacher, as well as public relations and promotional activities in over 40 countries.

Montreal officials to meet with Ecclestone

By Steven English

Government officials from Montreal will fly to London today for a meeting with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone in an attempt to save next season's Canadian Grand Prix.

The round was dropped from the 2009 calendar earlier this month under claims that it had not paid between $10 and $20 million of its contractual obligations in the last two years.

Bosses of the race denied that they had defaulted on payments, but admitted there was a commercial disagreement over the fee for the 2008 race and signalled their intention to hold negotiations to reinstate the race.

Ecclestone last week told autosport.com that he doubted the event would return to the schedule, but Montreal's mayor, Gerald Tremblay, and two senior cabinet ministers will meet with him this week in an attempt to change his mind.

The Quebec government is willing to offer its help to the race organisers because the event is believed to be worth around $75 million to the local economy at the beginning of the summer season.

"If we are able to reasonably and responsibly save this event, we will do it," the Quebec minister for economic development Raymond Bachand told the Montreal Gazette.

"The grand prix is a big event, it's the biggest tourism event, but how much does it bring in concretely, not only in spin-offs but in cash in our pockets as citizens, as taxpayers?

"I'm going to negotiate with Mr Ecclestone, so we will keep our cards to ourselves."

Two long-standing Formula One events have now been dropped from the calendar this month, with the French GP also removed for financial reasons.

Montreal's absence would make 2009 the first season since 1950 that the world championship would not have a round in North America.

Fisichella confident of Force India future

Giancarlo Fisichella insisted on Friday that he has no fears over his seat with the Force India team in the 2009 season despite the backmarkers having penned a technical agreement with McLaren-Mercedes.
Force India, who finished without a point in 2008, had McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa behind the wheel at a two-day Barcelona test earlier this month.

That prompted speculation over the future of the experienced Fisichella as well as teammate Adrian Sutil.

"The line-up has been announced in China in October by (team principal) Vijay Mallya, and I trust people who trust me," Fisichella told the official F1 website, www.formula1.com.

"I originally signed a two-year contract which was reviewed in September to incorporate the McLaren deal. In a few words, the team offered me a better car and a different package.

"I accepted their proposal and both sides signed the new document between Singapore and China. This is why Dr Mallya made the announcement in Shanghai."

The Italian driver said he was not surprised by seeing de la Rosa offered a test with Force India.

"The only thing I know is that in September we were told that Pedro could test and we could not say before it was made official so I was not at all surprised," he said.

Force India sign up with McLaren

Force India on Monday signed a long-term deal with McLaren Mercedes just days after splitting with engine-supplier Ferrari,
The Silverstone-based Formula One team, owned by Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya, have agreed a reported five-year deal with McLaren for the supply of gearboxes, hydraulic systems and Mercedes-built engines.

McLaren will lend operational support and provide the team with the new kinetic engine recovery system (KERS) that is due to be implemented for 2009.

The announcement comes three days after Force India ended their two-year deal with Ferrari for the supply of engines 12 months ahead of schedule.

The Scuderia supplied Force India with engines in their debut season but the team failed to score a point with Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil as their drivers.

Mallya said: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to announce a technical partnership with McLaren Applied Technologies and Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines.

"These new resources and developments will provide an enormous boost to our technical armoury and, as a result, we have high hopes of making good progress in 2009 and beyond."

Rossi impresses in Ferrari test

Moto GP world champion Valentino Rossi showed he is almost as quick on four wheels as he is on two as he impressed while testing a Ferrari on Thursday.

The Italian, known as Il Dottore (The Doctor) to his adoring fans, has previously tested a Ferrari Formula One car amid speculation that he may one day switch from racing motorbikes to cars.

He has already proved more than capable on four wheels, finishing second at the invitational Rally of Monza last week behind three-time Le Mans winner Rinaldo Capello.

On Thursday morning he completed 30 laps of the famous Mugello circuit at Scarperia, just outside Florence, clocking a fastest time of 1min 23.930sec in the Ferrari F2008.

That was less than three seconds slower than the time set by Ferrari's test driver Luca Badoer and just over five seconds off the lap record, set by Rubens Barrichello in a Ferrari in 2004.

Rossi, who won his eighth world title and sixth in the top Moto GP class in September, had stated prior to testing the Ferrari that he wanted to get within one second of the lap record.

He still has a day and a half of testing to reach his objective.

Loeb triumphs in Rally of Finland

Sebastien Loeb of France won the Rally of Finland for the first time on Sunday to move one point behind Mikko Hirvonen in the world championship standings.

Loeb finished nine seconds ahead of Finland's Hirvonen with Australia's Chris Atkinson in third.

Loeb, 34, survived a scare early on Sunday when his C4 spun off the track during the penultimate special stage.

The Frenchman led all the way, winning 15 of the 24 specials, for the 42nd victory of his career.
He became the eighth non-Finnish driver to win the rally in 58 editions.

"It was a great fight all week," Loeb said. "You had to be careful not to miss any junctions, and to not go over the limit.

"It's fantastic, an incredible feeling, winning here in Finland means so much to me.

"I desperately wanted to win this rally. Getting a win here was more important to me than just getting points.

"It's been a very hard battle with Mikko all weekend with no chance to relax. He did a great job - I've had to fight for every second."

Hirvonen admitted that Loeb had deserved his victory and is looking forward to the battle for the championship.

"I'm pleased with the speed we had but 'Seb' was able to find a few more seconds and in the end that's all he needed to win," said the Finn.

"The championship fight is not over, but of course all the rallies coming up are more important now. It's not over yet."

The event was the ninth in the 15-race World Rally Championship series, with the next taking place in Germany on the weekend of 15 August.

Hirvonen leads the table with 67 points, one ahead of four-time world champion Loeb.

Rally of Finland final standings:

China considers ditching F1 race

China is considering ditching its loss-making Formula One Grand Prix, according to a senior race official.

Qiu Weichang, deputy director of the Shanghai Administration of Sports, told AFP a decision on the future of the event would be announced in 2009.

"We're doing the assessment. By next year, we should be able to give you the answer," Qiu is reported to have said.

Qiu, who appeared cool on the idea of a night race, added that organisers "would like at least to break even".

Shanghai, China's biggest city, spent $240m (£161m) building a track suitable for F1 and has hosted a Grand Prix since 2004.

It has a contract with F1 until 2010 and is said by F1 insiders to pay about $50m (£34m) annually for the race.

But the event has not proved popular with local people and attendances have been poor - even with some spectators being transported in specifically to give the appearance of a fuller venue.

The event has been lucrative for F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone, who is believed to charge China some of the highest fees to host a race.

China is one of a string of locations which have joined the F1 circuit at a heavy cost in recent years in an attempt to boost their global image, joining the likes of Malaysia, Bahrain and Singapore on the calendar.

With the exception of Singapore, which held its inaugural Grand Prix as a night race in September, all have failed to capture widespread interest among locals.

Qiu said: "We want to create a win-win situation, for our side and for Bernie [Ecclestone] and the F1 organisers as well.

"If this is something we can do, and our co-operation is very happy and smooth, we will consider it.

"Of course we would like at least to break even. But there are two factors - one is the assessment; the other part is the win-win situation that we can create."

Asia is a growth area for F1. Abu Dhabi is to host its first race in 2009, with South Korea and India scheduled to follow suit in 2010 and 2011.

Ecclestone is keen for locations in the eastern hemisphere to hold their races as late in the day as possible in order to make the start time more attractive for F1's core audience in western Europe.

But asked about the idea of night racing, Qiu said: "In Singapore... holding the event at night is a good way to attract tourists to a small country.

"Singapore is hosting this event in their own unique way but we have our own situation."

Qiu said that the Grand Prix had succeeded in creating "this huge wave of car fever, so in that sense it is good news".

He said the circuit would continue to exist if the Grand Prix dropped because it was already in use for most of the year by car clubs, who hosted private driving sessions.

China has already ditched its MotoGP race, which was also held at Shanghai.

And in January, the head of the track, Yu Zhifei, who helped bring F1 to China, was jailed on corruption charges.

Honda to test Di Grassi in Spain

Honda will give Renault's third driver Lucas Di Grassi the chance to test for them in Barcelona later this month.

The 24-year-old Brazilian will join the team for their first winter test at the Circuit de Catalunya on 17 November.

Honda plan to name their 2009 drivers before Christmas with both Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello out of contract at the end of the year.

As well as Di Grassi, the team will also give Bruno Senna, the nephew of F1 legend Ayrton, a test in Barcelona.

The team will run this season's RA108 car in Barcelona for three days as they begin their build-up to next season.

Di Grassi will take part in the test after being overlooked by Renault, who have stuck with drivers Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jnr for 2009.

"This is a very well-deserved opportunity for Lucas to prove his potential," said Honda team principal Ross Brawn.

"After such an impressive performance in GP2 this season and during his testing responsibilities with Renault, we look forward to seeing Lucas in action and will take a keen interest in how he performs."

Di Grassi has raced in GP2, which has provided several drivers for F1 since its incarnation in 2005, for the last three seasons, finishing second in 2007 and third this season.

The Brazilian has also been part of Renault's development programme since 2004 and was the team's third driver in 2008 but is now keen to take the next step in his career.

"The next two weeks will be a very important stage in my development," said the 24-year-old.

"I will be spending a lot of time at the Honda factory before the test to speak with the engineers and learn as much as possible in advance of the test.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity of testing with Honda in Barcelona and look forward to proving myself to the team."

Honda are expected to keep faith with British driver Button next season despite another difficult campaign for the 28-year-old.

Button collected just three points whilst team-mate Barrichello claimed eight in a season marred by a lack of pace and reliability.

Barrichello has spoken of his desire to stay with Honda but the Brazilian is out of contract at the end of the year and at 36 is the oldest active driver in F1.

Carlos Alberto Backs England to Shine

Brazil legend Carlos Alberto has no doubt that England will qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, pointing to the experience gained in recent years as the key.

The Three Lions have had a remarkable 2008 under the stewardship of Fabio Capello, putting behind them the disappointment of missing out on the European Championship in the summer to make a good start on their road to South Africa.

They currently sit top of Group Six in the UEFA qualifying zone with a five point lead over Croatia after just four games.

Carlos Alberto, regarded by many as one of the greatest defenders of all time and himself a World Cup-winning captain, feels that England can go on and achieve great things in 2010.

"I think they are coming together now and they can be a force at the World Cup," the Brazilian said. "This is mainly because of the experienced players that they have.

"They have been playing together for the last six or seven years at least. Now with a new coach, a winner, I believe that England will make the next World Cup."

Carlos Alberto, who is in South Africa to attend Soccerex 2008, also praised the Barclays Premier League saying it should be the catalyst for English success on the world stage.

He continued: "Today England has the best local championship, very famous all over the world, and they deserve it because of what they've done to football.

"They bring fans to the stadiums, every game we see full stadiums, so in my opinion they deserve to do well at the World Cup.

"So we'll see then what can happen. I wish them the best."

The 64-year-old has played alongside some of the best ever players during his time, with his 1970 team-mates including Jairzinho, Tostao, Pele and Gerson.

And the former Fluminense, Santos and Flamengo ace is hoping for more great names to come to the fore from his native South America at the 2010 finals, despite being concerned about the state of the game in that region.

He added: "I hope that South America can be successful at the next World Cup and with some new big players.

"But the big problem with football here is that the law of the transfer market allows our best players to leave their countries early in life to go and play in Europe.

"This is not good because these players lose the spirit to play in their country, to play for their youth teams and in front of their own fans.

"This is the biggest problem with South American football.

Ferguson Praise for Ref Justice

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes referees in England should take a leaf out of Roberto Rosetti's book.

Ferguson was pleased with the way the Italian official dealt with some stiff challenges on Cristiano Ronaldo and other issues during United's 0-0 Champions League draw with Villarreal.

Rosetti did not hesitate to hand out a red card to Joan Capdevila for a high challenge on Ronaldo seven minutes from time.

And Ferguson claimed Ronaldo gets better protection in Europe than on the domestic scene.

He said: "The systematic fouling on him is what is happening in our game now. That is a tactic. Someone fouls him, then someone else has another foul.

"The referee thinks he is diving all the time and the crowd are screaming. So that is the problem.

"The referee was very fair and strict with both teams. He (Capdevila) may not have got that red card in England so there is a different interpretation of the physical aspect of the game in European matches."

Ronaldo was left with stud marks above his knee following the challenge and Ferguson added: "When you see the tackle again, it was very high. When you go as high as that you risk a red card.

"There were three tackles on Cristiano and I think the referee has quite rightly booked the players and then dished out a red card."

Ferguson also revealed that Wayne Rooney had apologised for going to ground too easily believing he had won a penalty.

The striker's action incensed the crowd but he escaped without a booking.

Ferguson said: "I think Wayne anticipated the challenge as he was expecting a penalty kick. It is unusual for him to do that.

"I have seen it and he has apologised to me. I think he has been watching (Robert) Pires too much.

"At least Wayne apologised to the Villarreal players. You would never see Pires do that."

Ferguson was at a loss to explain why United and Villarreal have played out four successive 0-0 draws, but at least both sides have the consolation of going through to the next stage of the competition.

"It is amazing in these four games we have not had a goal. I bet the public are hoping we do not meet in Rome," Ferguson added.

"I do not know how that is because we are an attacking side and Villarreal have a great record themselves.

"It is unusual for four games to end up 0-0. I thought we carried a bigger threat than them tonight. We had better opportunities in the match.

"But we are satisfied we are into the next stage. That's want we wanted to achieve. We have an advantage over Villarreal now.

"We have a home game against Aalborg and they have to go to Celtic so hopefully we can win the group."

Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini conceded United will finish the group as leaders.

He said: "They are not going to lose to Aalborg - that's for certain."

Pellegrini was cautious about his side's treatment of Ronaldo.

"It was not a rough game, and you have to challenge him," he said.

"Our objective is complete, and that is to qualify. However, we did notice the absence of some of our offensive players."

Casey Stoner Leaves Hospital After Wrist Operation

Casey Stoner underwent successful surgery on his wrist on Thursday, at the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Policlinico in Modena. Antonio Landi, Specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand Surgery, was assisted by arthroscopic specialist Dr Luigi Pederzini and by Dr Norman Della Rosa.

Using arthroscopic surgery, two floating bodies were removed from the area of the styloid process of the ulna bone (lower arm).

Stoner was treated for pseudoarthrosis on his left scaphoid before the removal of a staple (which was inserted in Stonerâ€TMs scaphoid during an operation in 2003), and a bone graft using the Herbert Bone Screw System, which is designed to promote early active motion.

Stoner wanted to give his personal thanks to the medical team and also to Ducati Corseâ€TMs trusted consultant, Prof. Fabio Catani from the Rizzoli Hospital in Bologna, who has provided crucial advice and support over recent months, helping to set up the operation with the team led by Dr Antonio Landi.

The Australian was discharged this afternoon and will begin his rehabilitation over the next few days on his return home to Switzerland.

Nicky Hayden Fastest at Wet Valencia

After enjoying perfect conditions yesterday, the second and final day of testing at Valencia was badly affected by adverse weather, with intermittent showers leaving the track in a constantly damp state. The riders decided to wait for the majority of the day to see if it relented but at around 15:30, with the asphalt still cold and wet, several of them finally took to the track.

Casey Stoner who had set the pace on his GP9 yesterday, opted out and watched from pit-lane as his new team-mate Nicky Hayden made constant progress with the wet setting of the new bike, clocking a fastest lap of 1.48.287.

Nicky Hayden - 1'48.287 (20 laps)
"I would have preferred to have another dry day today because we still had a lot of things to try with the bike but at least I got chance to get a first feel for it in the wet. We've seen with the way the rain has followed us around this season how important it is to have experience in these conditions. to. After my first run I said to myself, "wow, you're so slow!" But then we made some small changes and I felt better. We haven't really played around with the setting too much today because at the moment the most important thing is to try and adapt to the bike, the tyres, the team and their way of working and communicating. I have to be careful not to speak too fast or use too much slang! Joking aside, I know I have a lot of hard work to do but I'm ready for it and so is the team. I haven't asked for too many changes because Casey has already shown what this bike can do and now it's up to me to do the same.".

Capirossi and Vermeulen in wind tunnel

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP racers Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen are on their way to Suzuki’s factory in Japan to conduct all-important wind tunnel testing as the team prepares for its assault on the 2009 MotoGP World Championship.

Priorities remain to make the latest version of the Suzuki GSV-R consistently competitive even when grip levels deteriorate late in races, and to increase stability both in cornering and in a straight line. For this reason Suzuki has arranged to test both in their wind tunnel this week in Japan and on an appropriately demanding track at Phillip Island in Australia next week.

Paul Denning - Team Manager:
The test will be at Suzuki´s race department headquarters which is just outside Hamamatsu, and the wind tunnel is situated near the test track. Both Loris and Chris will participate in the test and there are some new aerodynamic parts which we are interested to get some data on with the guys actually on the bike.

For Chris, he has always been a little bit slower than Loris - and previously John Hopkins - down the straight and his acceleration off the corners is just as good, so we can only put that down to aerodynamics. We are hoping not only to test some parts with Chris, but also get some tips for him to get folded around the bike a little bit better and also make the bike a bit more comfortable for him to get tucked into more.

We don´t do a lot of wind tunnel testing with the actual GP riders. Suzuki does a lot with machine and test rider in a full sized wind tunnel rather than a scaled down model. Aerodynamic drag was traditionally the main thing to test in that environment, but with a motorcycle at Grand Prix level you are also looking to create a certain amount of `downforce´ on corners and also make the bike easy to pitch from side to side. It is not just about straight line drag, it’s also about how easy handling and stable the machine is as well.

With the GP riders themselves this is the first time they have done some wind tunnel testing with Suzuki and it is just a question of making sure that the changes coming up reflect the data that Suzuki has already gathered in the wind tunnel, but with them onboard. They want to get some specific data, because one or two kilometres per hour difference on the race track is difficult to understand the source of, whether it comes from slightly better corner exit or from grip and so on.

The main thing we are looking to generate at Phillip Island is increased grip through the long, fast corners, the only corner like that which we suffered on at Valencia was turn twelve, the long left hander before you come round to the final corner. Phillip Island has got three or four long accelerating corners like that so we are looking to try and put the power to the ground a lot better as a combination of both engine character and chassis changes.

Melandri almost quit

Horsefaced loser Marco Melandri has given us our best glimpse yet of the strong motivational skills he carried throughout the 2008 season. The laughing stock Italian freely admitted on his personal blog that by June he was considering 'giving up' racing possibly for a career in flower arranging or pillow fluffing.

"His sticking coward attitude offends me down to my garlic infused shell" admitted one Frenchman whilst nervously checking for Germans "Giving up is no answer to any problem, whereas giving up and calling a strike whilst hiding behind some croissant boxes is the answer to all problems. If this isn't the truth then my name isn't Alain Prost."

Lucky for all Marco was able to dig deep into his shallow divot of courage and 'throw a deaf ear or two' to the sniggering and continue riding to the very last round - something that gave us MotoGP fans something to smile about in a season that was less entertaining than Dani Pedrosa reading a Dilbert cartoon in a monotone voice.

Not smiling, however, were the Italian layabout pipe benders at Ducati who were have reported to have paid Melandri a small fortune, enough to keep an average Italian village in tagliatelle for a month, for his all-too-crappy 2008 services.

Because of this Team Red were keen to see Melandri pack up his tissues and leave mid season so as to save them a few Lira but Melandri stayed strong soon founding that the sound of notes jingling in his Diesel jeans blocked out the sound jeering and continuous 'you're crap' comments. After a season for the amnesia drugs Melandri is said to have been delighted to move to Kawasaki - a team that sadly never looks out of place at the back of the grid.

Dovizioso confident he can match Pedrosa

By Pablo Elizalde
Andrea Dovizioso says his main focus for the 2009 season will be to step on the podium as much as possible, rather on trying to finish ahead of teammate Dani Pedrosa.

The Italian rider has switched from the satellite JiR Scot squad to the works Honda team for 2009, when he will be partnering former 125 and 250 world champion Pedrosa, who overshadowed teammate Nicky Hayden in the past two seasons.

Dovizioso, who made his MotoGP debut this year, says he is confident he will be able to be a match for the Spaniard.

"To finish ahead of Dani would be important, and I am confident about my chances, but I will be mainly focused on stepping on the podium any time I can, being consistent with my new Honda HRC throughout the season," said Dovizioso.

The Italian is also hopeful he will have a good relationship with Pedrosa.

"Dani is a former 125cc and 250cc world champion and a great rider, but first of all he is a good guy, probably even shyer than I am," Dovizioso was quoted as saying by the official MotoGP website.

"Maybe this is the reason why we don't have a great feeling yet, but we will have a lot of time to know each other.

"I think right now he is not reaching his level on the road, maybe also because of his manager," added Dovizioso, referring to Alberto Puig, who had a war of words with Hayden earlier this year.

Capirossi podiums in rally appearance

MotoGP star Loris Capirossi had a successful rally debut on Saturday when as he took third place in the Suzuki Swift Sport Cup - and ninth overall in the two-wheeled drive section of the Tempest Rally.

The Rizla Suzuki racer started the day steadily in his Group N car as he came to terms with the demanding 80km of special stages held in the forests and Military training grounds around the Hampshire town of Aldershot in England.

"I took my time in the early stages as I got used to driving on the loose surfaces and in the forests, it was certainly very different from the wide-open tracks that I am used to in MotoGP!" said the 125cc, 250cc, 500cc and MotoGP race winner.

As the day progressed, Capirossi became more confident and moved through the field before eventually getting into the top-three in the later stages, but couldn't quite find the few seconds needed to progress further up the leader board.

With comprehensive assistance from co-driver Craig Thorley, Capirossi brought his #65 car home in third place, just 14 seconds away from the eventual Swift Sport Cup rally - and championship - winner Mark Gamble.

"It has been a great day and it was really fun to do the rally," smiled Loris. "As I got more confident with the car my times improved and I was able to go a lot quicker and I think if we could have done a couple more stages I might have caught the leader, but I am really pleased with third in my first rally.

"It was a shame that Paul [Denning] crashed out, because I think our times were very close and it would have been good to have had that extra bit of competition with him, but I think I would have beaten him anyway!

"I want to say a big thank-you to Craig for some great co-driving and to the organisers for putting on such a good day, plus thanks to Suzuki for inviting me to take part in the event and giving me this opportunity to drive the fantastic Suzuki Swift in a rally," he concluded.

Denning, Capirossi's MotoGP team manager, was in close touch with Capirossi and the leaders in the early stages, but a mistake at the end of a fast straight on stage four saw the Englishman slide off the road and into a ditch. He was unable to get his Suzuki back into the stage within the time limit and was disqualified.

Denning and co-driver Jemma Bellingham did rejoin the rally for the four afternoon stages and restored some pride by recording some of the quickest times as the torrential rain and high winds battered the competitors.

"With Loris, I suppose it was slightly inevitable that one of us was going to crash trying to beat the other, and I think it was even more inevitable that it was going to be me!" said Denning.

"It was quite surprising - considering our lack of experience - that we were able to run so competitively and I think this is a testament to the experience of Jemma and Craig - our co-drivers - that certainly helped us all day long.

"Loris and I were very close to each other early on but I made a mistake and slid off the road so I wasn't able to complete the whole rally - which was a great shame - but thanks to Ian Phillipson of the Swift Sport Cup and the rally organisers I was able to get back out for the afternoon stages and restore a bit of pride, so that made things a bit better.

"Well done to Loris for his podium position, it's a good end to 2008 and I hope we taste some more champagne on two wheels in 2009!" the Englishman concluded.

Capirossi and Denning will now prepare for Rizla Suzuki MotoGP’s next winter test at Phillip Island in Australia later this month, when development of the 2009 GSV-R will continue.

Melandri 'considered quitting'

Marco Melandri has admitted that his disastrous 2008 MotoGP season prompted him to consider his future in the sport.

The former MotoGP World Championship runner-up was expected to enjoy one of his best premier-class seasons after signing for the title-winning Ducati Marlboro Team - Melandri's first factory ride since his 2003 MotoGP debut with Yamaha.

But whilst team-mate and reigning champion Casey Stoner steered the Desmosedici GP8 to six wins, eleven podiums, nine poles and second in the world championship, Melandri never looked comfortable and joined an increasing list of riders baffled by the Italian machine.

The high-point of Melandri's season was fifth position in May's Chinese Grand Prix, but it proved a false dawn and by June Melandri was considering 'throwing it all in'.

"The 2008 season is over. It's been a learning year due to disappointments, but I really can't complain because in June I'd predicted the end of a life stage," Melandri wrote on his official website. "I seriously risked giving up during the bad times in my career and throwing it all in.

"Then one day something clicked in my head and I realised that if loads of people still believe in me then I should as well!. Now I feel really good, my work is my great passion and I'll give it all I've got because I know I'll have a great time!"

Melandri, a five time MotoGP race winner, finished the season just 17th in the world championship standings with 51 points, compared with 280 for Stoner. Kawasaki's Anthony West - whom Melandri has replaced for 2009 - was the only full time rider to score less points.

"It's not that this year I didn't try my best; on the contrary, I tried everything I could to start every race as if I was going to win," insisted Marco. "But when everything goes wrong and it's meant to be, there's nothing you can do to change fate.

"One thing I've learnt is that at times it doesn't help to ask yourself what's not working and who or what's wrong, because it doesn't improve the future and only makes you worry more and isn't helpful. I believe that at times it's best to let things be, knowing that you've done the best you can."

Fortunately, Melandri enjoyed a highly encouraging debut on the Kawasaki ZX-RR during post race testing at Valencia, when he beat both his best race and qualifying lap on a Desmosedici and got within 0.022sec of new team-mate John Hopkins.

Melandri's final MotoGP test of 2008 will take place at Phillip Island in Australia, from November 26-27.

"I'm going to have a few days holiday and then at the end of November I'll pass by Japan before the last test of the season in Australia," wrote the 250cc world champion.
