Uruguay, South Korea have points to prove

Port Elizabeth - Uruguay and South Korea will get the World Cup knockout stages underway on Saturday in a match where both sides will be determined to make their mark after decades of mediocrity in the tournament.

No one is tipping Group A winners Uruguay or Group B runners-up South Korea to get anywhere near the final but their early form has come as a surprise to many teams who could easily have seen them as first-round fodder.

A place in the quarter-finals would mark a stunning turnaround in the World Cup fortunes for either side.

While the likes of World Cup winners Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Italy remain a force in the global game, twice champions Uruguay are a shadow of their former selves having not reached the last eight since 1970 when they were semi-finalists.

Like Uruguay, who are appearing in their 11th finals, South Korea are World Cup regulars but have only advanced from the group phase once, as hosts in 2002 when they made the semis.

The modest Koreans normally play down their chances and speak only about the next game but coach Huh Jung-moo said they were in a hungry mood and looking beyond the second round.

Korea Confident

"I know my players will not be satisfied with just reaching the round of 16 and we will work harder to reach the semi-finals," said Huh.

"My players will be shooting for higher targets now."

South Korea`s performances have matched their bullish rhetoric, with passing flair, confident breaks and lung-busting fitness, but six goals conceded in their last two matches are glaring reminders of their fragility at the back.

In contrast, Uruguay have yet to concede a goal and have to be the favourites to win in Port Elizabeth on Saturday after their two wins and a draw earned them top sot in the group for the first time since the 1950 World Cup which they won.

Uruguay are expected to stick by a winning formation in which influential striker Diego Forlan has played behind forwards Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, a fearsome combination to throw at a so far shaky South Korean defence.

Midfielder Diego Perez said their focus would be to maintain their insatiable appetite for attack but tighten their defence against a dangerous and free-flowing Korean side once again carrying the hopes of the world`s most populous continent.

"We are clear that we cannot give away any advantage at all.

We know our limits. We know we are strong in defence and we have a good attack," Perez told Reuters.

"It has been long time since things have gone this way. We know we are on a good road," he added. "We must enjoy it." (F002/T009/S026)

Obama phones US World Cup heroes

Washington - President Barack Obama told America`s World Cup heroes Thursday that the West Wing of the White House erupted in cheers when Landon Donovan scored the dramatic winning goal against Algeria.

Obama called the jubilant United States team as they prepared in South Africa for their round-of-16 knockout clash with Ghana on Saturday.

The president told the team that he was in a high-stakes meeting with new Afghan war commander General David Petraeus in the Oval Office when the injury time winner went in, and could "hear the rest of the West Wing erupt."

"The President then congratulated Donovan on the game-winning goal, asked Tim Howard how his ribs were feeling and asked Clint Dempsey how his lip was doing," Obama`s spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement.

"The President wished the team good luck on Saturday and made sure they knew that the entire country was cheering them on."

The Americans beat Algeria 1-0 on Wednesday, and will face Ghana in the round-of-16 match in Rustenburg on Saturday and are now eyeing a deep run in the tournament.

Some members of the US team stopped at the White House before traveling to South Africa and are not lacking for presidential support in a campaign that has attracted rare public fervor back home.

Former president Bill Clinton watched their triumph over Algeria, and Vice President Joe Biden also traveled to South Africa, to watch them play England, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.(*)

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel wins European GP

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel has won the European Grand Prix, dominating the race from pole position while his teammate Mark Webber survived a spectacular crash.

It was Vettel's second win of the season. He completed the 57 laps of the Valencia street circuit Sunday ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Jenson Button was third for McLaren.

Webber emerged unhurt after a collision with Heikki Kovalainen's Lotus flipped his car early in the race.

It was Hamilton's third second-place finish in Valencia, after overcoming a drive-through penalty for overtaking the safety car.

Hamilton leads the overall standings with 127 points, ahead of world champion Button on 121. Vettel improves to third on 115 points.

Nadal overcomes knee, deficit, umpire flap to win

Things got quite complicated for Rafael Nadal on Saturday.
His right knee was bothering him "a lot," something he later would say he's "a little bit scared about." His left elbow was briefly in pain, too, following one particular serve.

He got into a dispute wih the chair umpire over whether Toni Nadal, Rafael's uncle, was coaching during the match, which is against the rules.

And then there was his most immediate concern Saturday: For the second consecutive round at Wimbledon, Nadal fell behind by two sets to one.

For the second consecutive round, though, he generally indefatigable Nadal came back and came through, this time pulling out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 victory over 33rd-seeded Philipp Petzschner of Germany to reach the second week.

"This match was very difficult for me," Nadal acknowledged. "Having a five-set match two days ago and one toda - that's tough. I'm happy to be in the fourth round. I'm going to try to be better for Monday."

That's when the grass-court Grand Slam tournament will resume after observing its traditional day of rest on the middle Sunday, all 32 players still in the event will be on the jam-packed schedule.

Nadalwill meet 66th-ranked Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, who beat Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-4. In his previous outing, de Bakker eliminated John Isner, the lanky American who won the longest match in tennis history, 70-68 in the fifth set.

No. 18 Sam Querrey of the United tates won his own lengthy match, reaching Wimbledon's fourth round for the first time by defeating 2002 semifinalist Xavier Malisse of Belgium 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 9-7. The final point was played at 9:23 p.m., and Querrey figured the match would have been susended and continued Monday if he hadn't won when he did.

Next up for Querrey, 22, is a Centre Court contest against No. 4 Andy Murray, trying to become Britain's first Wimbledon men's champion since Fred Perry in 1936.

Murray, who hasn't dropped a set so far, beat No. 26 Gilles Simon of France 6-1, 6-, 6-4 Saturday.

Other fourth-round men's matches Monday will include two-time French Open runner-up Robin Soderling of Sweden vs. No. 9 David Ferrer of Spain, and No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. No. 32 Julien Benneteau in an all-French pairing.

Neither of those is nearly as intriguing as the women's matcup between 12-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and three-time major winner Maria Sharapova. It's a rematch of the 2004 Wimbledon final, which Sharapova won, but Williams leads their career series 5-2.

"I love going on the court and playing someone that's obviously the favorite," Sharapova said. She struggled at the start of her 7-5, 6-3 victory over 68th-ranked Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic. Defending champion Williams, in contrast, overwhelmed 46th-ranked Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia at the outset of what would become a 6-0, 7-5 victory. Williams hit 19 aces and afterward declared: "For the most part my serve works when I'm in trouble. At Wimbledon it works the whole match."

Other women's fourth-round matchups include No. 3 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark of vs. Czech Petra Kvitova; No. 7 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland vs. No. 9 Li Na of China; and Estonian qualifier Kaia Kanepi vs. Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic.

None of the day's developments, however, was as significant as what happened while Nadal faced Petzschner, who lost in the first round at both of the year's first two major tournaments.

Nadal has won seven Grand Slam titles, including at the French Open this month, and never before has he won two five-setters en route to a major's fourth round. But the Spaniard went the distance against 151st-ranked Robin Haase of the Netherlands on Thursday, then did so again Saturday.

At four separate changeovers, Nadal was visited by a trainer, who mostly worked on the player's right knee. Tendinitis in both knees forced Nadal to pull out of Wimbledon a year ago instead of defending his 2008 title, and he disclosed for the first time Saturday that he's been dealing with knee issues this season.

Nadal said he received "new treatment" that helped his left knee after winning a clay-court title at Monte Carlo in April, but did not have time to get the same work done on the right side. Asked to describe the treatment, he said, "I can't explain (it) now, especially in English. Sorry."

He'll skip Spain's Davis Cup quarterfinal against France from July 9-11 so the same procedure can be carried out on his right knee, because he wants to be healthy in August for the U.S. Open, the only major title missing from his resume.

As for how the knee might effect him at Wimbledon, Nadal said: "I hope I'll be fine. I don't know. I'm going to check."

The left-hander was worried momentarily when he felt something in that elbow, but said that went away quickly and declared, "The arm is perfect."

Petzschner, playing his third five-setter in a row, sought help from a trainer for a recurring hip problem and faded late. He wondered aloud about how much medical help Nadal really needed Saturday, saying there didn't appear to be a difference in the No. 1-ranked man's movement before and after the trainer's visits.

"I only could say if I would be injured like this once, I would be happy. I don't know; maybe he had something. Maybe it was just ... clever ... to take a timeout there."

Nadal denied there was gamesmanship involved.
"I never call the physio when I don't have (anything wrong) - not one time in my career," he said. "If I (called) the physio today, it was because it was bothering me a lot, the knee."

Chair umpire Cedric Mourier warned Nadal during the fifth set about getting in-match coaching from his uncle, seated in the front row of the player guest box. Rafael Nadal pointed angrily at the umpire, spread his arms wide and shouted at him before returning to action.

Both Nadals said there was no coaching going on.
Instead, Toni Nadal explained, he was telling his nephew to stay positive.
"Nothing else," Toni Nadal said.

If anything, the admonishment from Mourier appeared to spur on the younger Nadal, who reeled off the final three games of the match. After starting only 1 for 11 on break points, he went 3 for 3 down the stretch - and in sports, of course, all's well that ends well.

"Very difficult," Toni Nadal said, echoing his charge's phrase. "But at least Rafael won the match. So all is OK."

Serena Williams into Wimbledon 4th round

Defending champion Serena Williams put on a serving clinic Saturday, hitting 20 aces in a straight-sets win over Dominika Cibulkova that sets up a possible fourth-round matchup with former champion Maria Sharapova.

The top-seeded American had at least two aces in each of her eight service games and overpowered the 46th-ranked Slovak 6-0, 7-5 in the day's first match on Centre Court.
Williams won 37 of 43 service points and held at love five times. She won 19 of her first 20 service points, with Cibulkova putting only four returns in play in that stretch.

The first set lasted just 18 minutes, with Williams winning 25 of 31 points, serving six aces and hitting 12 winners. She finished the match with 37 winners.

Cibulkova, a semifinalist at the French Open last year, finally got on the scoreboard when she held serve for 1-1 in the second set. From then on, she kept the match competitive by holding serve, although she couldn't cope with Williams' serves.

In the men’s competition, Sweden's Robin Soderling advanced to the fourth round after a straight-sets victory over Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci.

Sixth-seeded Soderling, a two-time French Open finalist, beat the 24th-ranked Bellucci 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 in just under two hours.

After breezing through the first two sets, the Swede faced a stiffer challenge from the left-handed Brazilian in the third, when he saved three break points in the penultimate game of the match.

Soderling, who has reached the round of 16 for the second consecutive year at Wimbledon, is one of only three men yet to drop a set this tournament.

Brazil's Kaka, Elano, Robinho to return against Chile

Kaka, Elano and Robinho are set to return to Brazil's starting lineup for the second-round match against Chile on Monday, giving the team a much-needed offensive boost.

Coach Dunga may not be able to count on defensive midfielder Felipe Melo, however, who sustained a left ankle injury in Brazil's 0-0 draw against Portugal on Friday in the teams' final Group G match.

Kaka will be back after a suspension for a red card against Ivory Coast, while Elano should be fit after recovering from a right ankle injury that left him out of Friday's match in Durban.

Robinho was rested against Portugal after a minor thigh problem, but Brazil doctor Jose Luis Runco said Saturday the striker can return against Chile.

MotoGP Title ‘Will Mean Less’ With Rossi Out

London - Valentino Rossi’s injury-enforced absence will take the gloss off this year’s MotoGP championship no matter who wins it, the Italian showman’s rivals say.

Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo, Rossi’s Yamaha teammate and favorite for the title, said winning without the sport’s champion and most flamboyant rider made it less of an achievement.

“It’s a pity for everyone that Valentino is not here. Winning a world championship is always a great feeling, but without Valentino it maybe loses a little bit of its value,” Lorenzo said ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Rossi, a nine-times champion in all categories, is expected to be out for between four and five months after breaking his leg in practice for his home Italian Grand Prix at Mugello on June 5.

“I want to be world champion with Valentino on the track,” said Lorenzo.

“If I could put all the legends in the history of the motorcycle with me on the track, I would for sure.”

Nicky Hayden, the American Ducati rider who beat Rossi to the title in 2006 on a Honda, agreed that an asterisk might have to appear in the MotoGP history books against this year’s winner.

“I try not to get caught up in ifs and buts, good or bad in racing or in life, but it’s true,” said Hayden, 28, who beat Rossi by just five points after a season that went down to the wire.

“Whoever wins will feel a little bit less because the guy who has won so many [titles and races] wasn’t out there. But that’s how it goes. He made a mistake.”

Even if Rossi, 31, returns quicker than expected, his title hopes have evaporated. Lorenzo, who was already leading Rossi in the championship standings before the accident, has a 25-point advantage over compatriot Dani Pedrosa with 14 races remaining, including Sunday’s. (Alan Baldwin)

Rooney Must Rediscover His Scoring Touch

Johannesburg. Will the real Wayne Rooney please stand up? The one seen in an England shirt of late seems to be an impostor.

England needs Rooney to start scoring if it is going to get much further at the World Cup. Fabio Capello’s team cannot become world champion relying solely on Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Emile Heskey for goals.

One reason why the United States, Algeria and Slovenia proved to be far more bothersome obstacles than necessary for England in the group stage was Rooney’s goal drought. That needs to change against the tougher opponents that lie ahead.

England’s 1-0 defeat of Slovenia on Wednesday, a victory more nervous and uncomfortable than it should have been, marked the eighth successive game in which Rooney has not scored for the national side — bizarre when one considers how regularly he shook the nets last season for his club, Manchester United.

Rooney is not the only misfiring star at the World Cup. World player of the year Lionel Messi also has yet to score in South Africa although, like Rooney, he has come agonizingly close.

The difference is that Messi’s Argentina is getting goals from other players while it waits for Messi to open his account. It notched up seven goals in its three victories that put it top of Group B. England’s paucity of scoring, in contrast, condemned it to a second-place finish behind the United States in Group C, which came out on top because it scored four goals to England’s two.

What, if anything, is eating Rooney is not clear. The 24-year-old insists he will score eventually and that he is not overly concerned, but England should be.

His club manager, Alex Ferguson, has suggested nerves could be part of problem. He spoke to Rooney by telephone last week.

“Sometimes the expectation can be a debilitating process,” Ferguson told Sirius XM Radio. “I was saying relax, enjoy it. I could just sense there was a tension there in the [England] camp.”

Seven minutes into the second half against Slovenia, when England was searching for a second goal to calm its nerves, Rooney fluffed a shot after an interchange of passes with Steven Gerrard. It was an uncharacteristic howler from someone usually so ruthless in front of goal.

Five minutes later, Rooney controlled a pass with his left foot and fired with his right, but the Slovenian goalkeeper got just enough of a fingernail to the ball to direct it against his post. Again, had Rooney been more decisive, the shot might have gone in.

Luck also seems to be against him. In the 63rd minute, Rooney’s head connected with a free kick from Gerrard, sending the ball goalward, but it bounced off the back of Milivoje Novakovic.

Rooney’s problems might also be physical. He suffered knee, ankle and groin problems over the last two months of his club season. Capello said before the World Cup that Rooney was completely recovered. On Wednesday, though, the Italian took him off after 72 minutes with a problem to the same right ankle that Rooney twisted in March.

The initial word from the England camp was the problem will not stop Rooney from playing the next match and is not a recurrence of the old injury, but it remains a concern.

“Rooney was not OK for his ankle, I substituted. Rooney is a really important,” Capello said. “As manager, I have to find some solution.”

The consolation for England is that Rooney’s huge desire to be involved never seems to wane. He looks desperate to score. He also labors long and hard to create chances for teammates.

He showed sharp thinking in quickly taking a corner while the Slovenian goalkeeper was out of his goal at the start of the second half. In chasing almost half the length of the pitch in the 52nd minute after one of David James’ goal kicks, Rooney also showed what a bulldog he is.

Given his talents, it is inevitable Rooney will score again. What matters to England is that that happens now, at the World Cup, and not when it is too late.

Serena Snags Sister’s Crown

Wimbledon, England. Serena Williams kept telling herself she was facing just another foe in the Wimbledon final, just another woman who hits the ball quite hard, just another player trying to deny her a Grand Slam title.

She wasn’t facing just anyone, of course. She was playing her older sister Venus. And when the latest all-Williams final finished, when Serena wrapped up a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory on Saturday for a third Wimbledon championship and 11th major title overall, she jogged to the net with her arm extended for a handshake. Venus pulled her close for a warm embrace, instead.

“I didn’t think about Venus at all today. I just saw her as an opponent,” said Serena, who also beat her sister in the 2002 and 2003 finals at the All England Club.

“At one point, after the first set, I looked on the side of the court at the stats, and it was like ‘Williams,’ ‘Williams.’ I couldn’t figure out which was which,” she added.

That was because she was facing the only woman who can equal her power and court coverage on grass courts. Monday’s rankings will say Serena is No. 2, and Venus No. 3 — behind No. 1 Dinara Safina, a 6-1, 6-0 loser to Venus in the semifinals — but it is clear who the best woman in the world is at the moment.

Serena has won three of the past four Grand Slam titles and even poked a little fun at Safina, who is 0-3 in major finals.

“If you hold three Grand Slam titles, maybe you should be No. 1, but not on the WTA Tour,” Serena said. Then, alluding sarcastically to two less-than-major events won by Safina, Serena said: “I see myself as No. 2. That’s where I am. Dinara did a great job to get to No. 1. She won Rome and Madrid,” then laughed.

Serena leads Venus in Grand Slam titles (11-7), in head-to-head matches (11-10), and in all-Williams major finals (6-2).

It was the 14th Grand Slam final for each Williams; no other active woman participated in more than four. Serena is 11-3 in such matches; Venus fell to 7-7, with all but one defeat coming against her sister.

Asked if it’s easier or harder losing to a sibling, five-time Wimbledon champion Venus said: “There’s no ‘easy’ to losing, especially when it’s so close to the crown.”

She was the two-time defending champion and had won 20 matches in a row at Wimbledon, the last 17 in straight sets. But Venus — at 29, she’s 15 months older than Serena — appeared a step slow, perhaps bothered by the left knee that’s been bandaged since the second round.

About 3 1/2 hours after their match ended, Serena and Venus returned to Center Court and capped their domination of the tournament by winning a second consecutive Wimbledon doubles championship. Slapping palms between points, the sisters beat Australians Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs 7-6 (4), 6-4 to collect their ninth women’s doubles Grand Slam title, fourth at Wimbledon.

“Nothing like winning a title with your sister,” Serena said.

Wimbledon Marathon Men Isner, Mahut Finish After 11 Hours, 215 Ace Serves

Wimbledon, England. After three days and more than 11 hours, the tennis match that would not end finally did.

John Isner and Nicolas Mahut left Court 18 at Wimbledon on Thursday having long since established records for the longest match, in both time elapsed and number of games, in professional tennis history.

After the first-round match passed the 11-hour mark, Isner hit a backhand passing shot to win the marathon match 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 70-68.

“Nothing like this will ever happen again,” Isner said after the chair umpire suspended the match at 9:11 p.m. on Wednesday evening. “Ever.”

That came 7 hours, 6 minutes in. Not seven hours into the match. Seven hours into the fifth set. At that point, Isner and Mahut had produced an epic standstill, two sets apiece, 59-59 suspended in time.

A BBC presenter asked Isner after the match how he felt about having to play his men’s doubles match a half-hour later.

“That’s kind of a mean joke,” he said, smiling. “I don’t even want to think about that. We’ll go back to the locker room and see what happens.”

As the match wore on, Isner, 25, appeared ready to collapse. He looked tired. Beyond tired. Can-you-believe-my-match-lasted-11-hours tired. He looked as if he wanted to cry, or crawl off the court, or find the nearest bed and sleep for a year or five.

Instead, at 58-58, he tossed his racket on the grass and lumbered toward the bathroom. That might seem insignificant. So might a first-round match at Wimbledon between unheralded players.

Isner returned and scratched out his fifth match point, only to watch Mahut boom another ace. Shortly afterward, Mahut, a 28-year-old Frenchman, approached the chair umpire and said he could no longer serve or see. Isner threw his head back, clearly miffed at the direction — Thursday, round three — the match was headed.

“We couldn’t agree to play,” he said. “So they canceled.”

Roger Federer walked onto Court 1 for his second-round match while Isner and Mahut were at 11-11 in the fifth. Federer won, showered, dressed and pushed back his news conference at least three times. In some ways, Federer said, he wished that he were Isner or Mahut.

In other, more obvious ways, he did not.

“I’m aware, yes,” Federer said. “I’d be a fool if I wouldn’t know. This is a special match. I hope somehow this is going to end.”

While Federer addressed the news media, 23rd-seeded Isner and unseeded Mahut kept on their serve-dominated match. Both broke the men’s singles record for aces in one match, with Isner finishing with 112 aces and 10 double faults to Mahut’s 103 aces and 21 double faults.

Neither man had much going receiving serve, though. Isner won just two of his 14 break points, while Mahut was 1 for 3.

The players ran out of changes of shirts. The fans lined Court 18, five deep in some spots, and they climbed the railings and peeked through one hole in the fencing for better views.

At the University of Georgia, where Isner went to college, some 65 tennis campers gathered around a television. Watching Isner, Manuel Diaz, his college coach, thought back to one national indoor final, when Isner injured his foot days beforehand and still managed to hobble out of bed to win.

“That’s the kind of guy he is,” Diaz said. “So this is not a huge surprise for me.”

In Medina, Ohio, Vicki Nelson heard of Isner’s match and went inside to watch. It was Nelson who once held the record for the longest match in tennis history, a full 6 hours and 31 minutes against Jean Hepner in Virginia, or shorter than Wednesday’s incomplete fifth set.

Nelson and Hepner played their match in one day, not three, but still she felt for Isner and his mother, Karen.

“It must have been agony for her,” Nelson said.

Back at Wimbledon, both Federer and Roddick were reminded of their five-set final here last year, a relative sprint taken by Federer, 16-14. Roddick noted that the men’s game lends a big advantage to big servers.

Federer maintained afterward that Wimbledon does not need to institute tie-breakers in the fifth set.

“It’s perfect the way it is,” Federer said. “It’s unfortunate these guys are going to be a little bit tired tomorrow and the next day and the next week and the next month.”

Frozen pitch puts Ghana`s training on ice

Rustenburg - Frozen pitches at Ghana`s World Cup training base north of Rustenburg caused their practice session on Thursday to be delayaed for two hours.

The west Africans were scheduled to start a private training session at nine in the morning but were told that the pitches at the Mogwase Stadium would be unfit for use.

Ghana Football Association vice-president Fred Pappoe told the Ghana website (ghanafa.org): "We were informed early this morning that we had to reschedule training due to the freezing conditions.

"The pitch is frozen and it has to be cleared."

Last Friday, the United States were delayed on their way to a pre-match training at Rustenburg`s Royal Bafokeng stadium when an elephant crossed the road ahead of the team bus.

Temperatures in Rustenburg, where Ghana meet Australia on Saturday in a Group D encounter, have fluctuated dramatically in the last week.

A week ago, in sunny conditions, they reached 25 degrees Celsius, but this week have fallen overnight to minus five as winter has taken a grip on the North-West province.

Old foes Maradona and huh renew battle

Johannesburg - Argentina coach Diego Maradona will see a familiar foe in the opposing dugout when his side face South Korea in their second Group B match at Soccer City on Thursday.

South Korea coach Huh Jung-moo was the man assigned to stop Maradona when the countries met in their opening match of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, a game long-remembered in Buenos Aires for the Koreans` strong-arm tactics against their skipper.

"I remember Huh very well," Maradona said after the draw pairing the sides together was made in December. "In 1986 the Koreans played taekwondo, not football, against us."

Maradona went into that game in Mexico City nursing a long-standing injury, and the Koreans tactics were to do anything they could to stop him.

Ultimately they failed as Maradona had a brilliant game leading his side to a 3-1 victory, setting off on the path that led to victory in the World Cup final against West Germany.

Argentina and South Korea, who have only played each other once since then, go into Thursday`s match buoyed by victory in their opening games last Saturday with the Argentines beating Nigeria 1-0 and the Koreans ovecoming Greece 2-0.

Veron doubt

Maradona has just one doubt over defender Juan Sebastian Veron, who strained his right calf muscle against Nigeria and was still sitting out training on Tuesday.

Although he is expected to play Veron, Maradona will probably wait until the last minute for a decision on his fitness, otherwise the team should be unchanged.

Veron, like Maradona, will also be keen to beat the Koreans after suffering some rough treatment from Pohang Steelers when his Estudiantes side played them at the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi in December with three Steelers players sent off.

South Korea, who need to raise their game another notch to compete with Argentina, have no fresh injury worries.

Huh could also welcome striker Lee Dong-guk back into the lineup following his recovery from a thigh injury.

Huh has previously hinted he could employ a more conservative 4-5-1 formation against Argentina, which could see Lee at its apex with forward Park Chu-young pushed out wide.

Jung Song-ryong is likely to remain in goal after Huh`s startling decision to axe Lee Woon-jae against Greece.

Jung had a solid start but was rarely tested and will undoubtedly be the busier of the two keepers on Thursday. (Uu.S022/T009/P003)

De Rossi admits ‘his mistake’

Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi has admitted that he made a mistake which led to Paraguay’s goal in Cape Town.

The defending champions had to battle back to a 1-1 draw in their opening game in Group F as De Rossi scored the leveller in the second period.

But the Azzurri’s were given a fright when Paraguay went ahead on 39 minutes as Antolin Alcaraz headed in from a free-kick.

De Rossi has now conceded that he let his side down by losing his marker, but was relieved his team-mates upped their game to secure what could be a vital point.

“We played well, were tough and allowed Paraguay very little. My mistake led to the goal, so everyone was angry,” he said.

“We were going too deep defending the free-kicks, but he was my man and I was meant to be marking him. I definitely take the blame for that goal.

“It was important to get back on track at the start of the second half and we felt the path was there for the victory.

“I don’t think it was a tactical issue, as Paraguay were more aggressive in the first half and lost that intensity a little as time wore on.

“We passed the ball around, but were a little sterile in the final third and you pay for that at this level. We need to improve in the final third, to be more clinical and to get the final pass into the box. That’s what counts in a World Cup.”

Hot-shot Dzeko and Grafite keep Wolfsburg on top

Berlin - Wolfsburg’s strikers Edin Dzeko and Grafite both netted in the German league leader’s 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday while title rivals Hertha Berlin and Bayern Munich also picked up wins.

With Hertha winning 2-0 at Cologne and Bayern enjoying a 3-0 victory over Bavaria neighbours Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg stay top of the Bundesliga only by virtue of a better goal difference.

Bayern’s win also puts them on 63 points and they are two behind Wolfsburg on goal difference, while Hertha are third on 62 points with two games left.

Fourth-placed Stuttgart now need to win at Schalke on Wednesday if they want to stay in the title race.

Wolfsburg’s Dzeko hit his 21st goal of the season when he latched onto a through ball in Dortmund’s penalty area after only 14 minutes.

And Grafite moved one clear of Stuttgart’s Mario Gomez as the league’s top scorer with his 24th goal in 23 league games when he accepted Dzeko’s simple tap in on 47 minutes.

To add insult to injury, Dortmund had Kevin-Prince Boateng sent off for a dangerous tackle before Dzeko added his second with five minutes remaining as Dortmund finally had their seven-game winning streak broken.

Defending champions Bayern Munich ran riot against Leverkusen as Luca Toni opened the scoring just after the half-time break.

Then French midfielder Franck Ribery added a second on 59 minutes with a clever flick over Bayer goalkeeper Rene Adler.

And Bayern striker Lukas Podolski – who is heading back to his former club Cologen at the end of the season – was set up by his Germany team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger to hit Munich’s third on 71 minutes.

Hertha Berlin are still in the title race after their 2-1 win at Cologne thanks to Brazilian Cicero and midfielder Patrick Ebert while the home side pulled back a late consolation goal.

Bottom side Karlsruhe look almost certain to be relegated as they squandered a 2-0 lead to slump to a 3-2 defeat at home to Hanover and the league’s last team are four points from safety with two games left.

On Wednesday night, UEFA Cup finalists Werder Bremen are at Eintracht Frankfurt, while Stuttgart must win at Schalke to keep their title dreams alive.

Hamburg are at home to Bochum while relegation candidates Energie Cottbus are at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach and Arminia Bielefeld are at home to Hoffenheim.

Goal-scorer Gomez pulls out of training

Berlin - Striker Mario Gomez pulled out of training with a knee injury on Sunday having scored the first goal in Germany’s 2-0 win over South Africa in a friendly on Saturday.

With Germany facing minnows Azerbaijan on Wednesday in Hanover with World Cup qualifier points at stake, Bayern Munich’s Gomez pulled out of training in Cologne on Sunday complaining of pain in his right knee and received treatment.

The rest of the squad trained without problems and Germany coach Joachim Loew said he was happy with Saturday night’s performance, having played a 4-3-3 system rather than the traditional 4-4-2 formation.

Loew used the speed of 20-year-old wingers Mesut Oezil and Marko Marin to exploit space down the flanks for lone striker Gomez, while Werder Bremen’s Oezil scored Germany’s second goal.

“My team did well both in terms of result and performance,” said Loew who criticised his team last month when they struggled to a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan in Baku in a World Cup qualifier.

“That was a clear improvement in relation to our last few games, we were more fluid on the ball.

“We have been together for a week now and you could see the benefits of the extra training.

“There are still a few things which don’t fit into the way we play.

“There is still some room for improvement in defence, Arne Friedrich and Heiko Westermann put in good claims for their centre-back places.

“Our structure has improved greatly.”

Oezil put in the most eye-catching performance of the night having been handed his first start for Germany and Loew singled him out.

“Mesut Oezil brought a lot of creativity and was technically excellent, he has a good eye and can produce some dangerous situations for us.

“He played very well in attack, but he still has things to learn on tracking back, but I am very happy with his performance.”

In front of his home crowd, Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler gave a good account of himself, but his rival Robert Enke will be in Germany’s Number One shirt for Wednesday’s qualifier.

Loew kept his cards close to his chest when asked if he will use the 4-3-3 formation again on Wednesday.

Germany lead Group Four by a single point and face their most important game of the qualification campaign so far when they take on Russia in Moscow on October 10. (AFP)

Loew recalls Enke and Gomez back for Germany

Berlin - Germany coach Joachim Loew said Thursday he is set to recall goalkeeper Robert Enke and striker Mario Gomez for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein in Leipzig.

Germany top Group 4 with nearest rivals Russia four points behind, but Loew knows his side can ill-afford to drop points either on Saturday or on April 1 against Wales in Cardiff before they travel to Moscow in October.

Back-to-back home defeats at the hands of England and Norway recently mean Germany need a convincing win at Leipzig’s Zentralstadion to stay on course for South Africa next year.

Having recovered from a broken hand, Hanover’s Robert, 31, is back in goal while an ankle injury to Bayern Munich’s Miroslav Klose means Stuttgart’s Mario Gomez will partner Bayern’s Lukas Podolski up front.

"Robert has showed good form in recent weeks and we trust him," said Loew in Wednesday’s press conference.

With Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler nursing an elbow injury, Enke will keep his place to face the Welsh in Cardiff four days later unless he picks up an injury.

And Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling passed a fitness test on Thursday and looks set to be included on the bench.

Hamburg winger Piotr Trochowski is out with a knee injury, so Gomez is expected to start having scored seven goals in his last eight league games, despite a poor performance at Euro 2008 last June.

"Independent of our personnel problems, we want to pick up six points," said Loew on Wednesday.

And with the friendly 2-1 defeat against England last November and the 1-0 reversal to Norway in February still fresh in the memory here, captain Michael Ballack is urging an immediate response from Germany.

"We are determined to compensate for those defeats and we want two unconditional victories," said Ballack.

Ballack´s charm offensive on Germany team-mates

Berlin - Germany captain Michael Ballack has been working hard to build bridges with his team-mates following last autumn’s spat with national coach Joachim Loew, senior players have revealed.

Chelsea midfielder Ballack caused a storm here last autumn when he accused Loew of failing to show senior players enough respect and loyalty after veteran midfielder Torsten Frings was kept on the bench for two World Cup qualifiers.

Ballack was later forced to issue an apology and backed down, but it became clear things were not entirely harmonious in the Germany camp.

And senior players defender Philipp Lahm and striker Miroslav Klose have revealed Ballack is now working hard to improve his image within the national team.

"He approaches players far more now than he used to," Bayern Munich’s Lahm told Stern magazine.

And Klose, who misses both Germany’s qualifiers against Leichtenstein, in Leipzig on March 28, and Wales, on April 1 in Cardiff, with an ankle injury, says Ballack must lead by example on and off the field.

"You notice that Michael tries to integrate himself more," said Klose, who has captained Germany in Ballack’s absence.

"But he must also do that on the field, that will not happen today or tomorrow, but is something he must learn and create for himself."

After Germany lost the Euro 2008 final 1-0 to Spain in Vienna last June, several senior players criticised Ballack for using strong language, especially in his on-field row with team manager Oliver Bierhoff.

Ballack later justified his words by saying when he started his career, a football dressing room was the place where problems within the team were thrashed out.

"Things are different to how they were," said Ballack, who made his debut in 1999.

"My challenge is to conduct myself as the captain of the national team and to be approachable for the younger players."

And Loew himself says he has seen a change in attitude from his captain, who has won 90 caps.

"During the last game, I had the feeling that Michael was communicating more and that is good," said the national coach.

Germany have lost their last two games at home – the first time that has happened since 1956 – when they went down 2-1 to England at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium last November and were then humbled 1-0 by Norway in February.

Minnows Leichtenstein – ranked 151 in the world – take on Germany on March 28 in a World Cup qualifier and Germany need a convincing win to underline their place as group leaders ahead of Russia.
