Satria Muda Coach Plans to Spread Minutes in KL

Jakarta - If Satria Muda Britama hopes to avoid a second defeat in the Asean Basketball League when it travels to Kuala Lumpur over the weekend, the Jakarta club will have to work out its trust issues.

Satria Muda fell 94-93 to the Singapore Slingers last week, the loss highlighting the club’s odd coaching tactics more than its players’ performance.

New head coach Ocky Tamtelahitu opted to keep his rookies on the bench for much of the ABL opener, and relied heavily on a six-man rotation.

Veteran guard Mario Wuysang, the lone holdover from the squad that finished runner-up last season, was the only Indonesian to log heavy minutes.

Center Doni Ristanto, one of the rookies, played just a minute.

Ocky said he was not confident that the team’s newcomers “were ready,” but acknowledged that his decision to rely on just six players took a toll on them.

“It was my choice. I didn’t think most of my players were ready,” he said on Friday.

“I want to give them more time to adjust. I know they’ll be ready as we play more games, and I’ll be more comfortable using them when that time comes.”

Ocky said he planned to expand his rotation to include Doni, Ryan Febrian and Fattah Arifin against Kuala Lumpur’s Westsports Dragons.

But he is still inclined to rely on his imports, notably American forward Marcus Morrison and Filipino guard Francis Adriano, to lead the team.

The Dragons lost their ABL opener on the road, 79-74 to the Chang Thailand Slammers.

Filipino guard Rudy Lingganay scored a team-high 30 points for the Dragons, but Slammers forward Chris Kuete scored nine of his 31 points in overtime to give Chang the win. (Wimbo Satwiko)

Pagunsan Has Perfect Start in Mercedes-Benz Indonesia

Juvic Pagunsan took the first-round lead in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia on Wednesday to make the perfect start in his bid to finish the year ranked No. 1.

The Filipino carded an eight-under-par 64 at Emeralda Golf and Country Club to take the lead ahead of Thailand’s Borwon Chaisri, who shot 66.

The $80,000 tournament is the last of the season on the Mercedes-Benz Tour, and Pagunsan heads the Order of Merit with earnings of $22,450.

Pagunsan claimed the Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand in June by seven strokes and carded a flawless round on Wednesday, making eight birdies.

He played the front nine in five under helped by three birdies in a row from the second.

He also made three on the trot from the 14th.

“That was one of my best rounds of the year. I did not put a foot wrong,” Pagunsan said.

Indonesian No. 1 Rory Hie, whose sole victory since turning professional came in the 2008 International Championship on the Mercedes-Benz Tour, shot an even-par 72.

Rory made an eagle in the par-5 seventh hole and a birdie in the 17th, but hit bogeys in the first, fifth and 15th holes to finish the day tied at 18th with seven others.

Burhan Bora and Johannes Dermawan had the next best score in the Indonesian field coming in at joint 26th with a 73.

In a rare treat for the crowd, two players recorded aces. Thai Atthaphon Prathummanee had a hole in one on the 16th while his countryman Philip Matsson, an amateur, aced the fourth.

Thailand’s Pinsawat Pariwat, the youngest of all amateurs at the age of just 13, fired a very respectable 73.

Leading first round scores (par 72):

64 - Juvic Pagunsan (PHI)

66 - Borwon Chaisri (THA)

68 - Namchok Tantipokhakul (THA), Antonio Lascuna (PHI). Wittawat Sae-ung (THA), Artemio Murakami (PHI)

69 - Nicholas Fung (MAS), Wisut Artjanawat (THA), Panuwat Muenlek (THA), Mohd Sukree Othman (MAS), Ferdie Aunzo (PHI), Pawin Ingkhapradit (Am) (THA), Atthaphon Prathummanee (THA)

Murray Crushes Federer to Take Shanghai and 2nd Title of the Year

Shanghai - Andy Murray buried remnants of his 2010 slump in indisputable fashion on Sunday with a crushing 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Roger Federer to win a second Masters trophy of the season with victory in Shanghai.

It took less than 90 minutes for the fourth-ranked Murray to completely rewrite his 2010 scenario and earn his second title of the year — also recording his second consecutive defeat of the Swiss in a Masters final.

The loss prevented Federer from pulling even with Rafael Nadal for the most career Masters titles, at 18.

“It was obviously a very, very good week,” Murray said. “The match was, from my side, very solid. Roger had a couple chances to get back in the first set.

“It was obviously a great, great match for me. I made few mistakes, but as a tournament, overall I’m very happy with it,” said Murray, who was ill last week and lost in the Beijing quarterfinals. “I had to play great to have a chance against Roger. But I was able to do that today.”

Murray now has a solid 8-5 lifetime record against Federer, who will move back to second in the world on Monday, just behind Nadal thanks to his semifinal defeat of Novak Djokovic, which followed a hammering of two-time Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling.

But Federer’s form tapered away when it counted against Murray, who struck 20 winners, saved six break points and broke four times.

The performance is bound to restore the confidence of the prickly Scot, who was laughingly admonished during the trophy ceremony with pleas from the emcee to promise to smile more on his next visit.

Federer, with 30 unforced errors, saved a match point in the final game before Murray pulled through for victory under the open roof of the Qi Zhong center.

The defeat dropped Federer to 2-4 in 2010 finals, with Murray improving his overall season record to 41-14.

“I’ve played some of my best tennis against Roger,” he said.

In August, a fortnight before the start of the US Open, Murray lifted the Toronto trophy at Federer’s expense. The 23-year-old Scot lost the Australian Open final to the Swiss in January.

Federer acknowledged that he was outplayed on Sunday.

“I know how tough it is to win these Masters titles,” the Swiss star said. “He made me work hard. I couldn’t find many great shots; he was too good.”

Webber Upbeat Despite Crashing Out in South Korea

Yeongam, South Korea - Australian Mark Webber remained bullish about his chances of winning this year’s Formula One world championship, despite losing his leadership after crashing out of Sunday’s Korean Grand Prix.

The 34-year-old Red Bull driver spun his car during the early laps of a delayed and interrupted, but wildly dramatic, rain-hit race while running in second place and hit a curb and a wall before colliding with German Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes car.

The accident left him pointless and cost him top spot in the title race with two events remaining in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. Fernando Alonso of Ferrari took over as leader.

Webber collected himself, however, and remained defiant in his bid to become the third Australian after Jack Brabham and Alan Jones to lift the title.

“It’s not easy, but I can still do it, absolutely,” he said on Monday. “Positions are not really important at the moment — the points are the important thing. They can change very quickly. This is my second non-finish of the year, but there are still two races to go and I will do my absolute best.”

Webber conceded that his accident was all his own fault.

“I got a wheel on the curb on the exit of turn 12 and it was a very slow-motion moment. Totally my mistake,” he said.

“It was a very long slide and so frustrating. I thought I had done enough, but in the end it wasn’t enough,” he added.

While Webber bemoaned his fortune, Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, the 2008 champion, is optimistic that he is still in the hunt thanks to finishing second, his first podium finish in four races. “It is definitely back on and it is possible, but we need to keep pushing and we need some luck,” he said.

“We will keep pushing and as you saw anything can happen, we didn’t expect two Red Bulls to go out, but that is how close this championship is. Fernando is quick but it is still open.”

His McLaren teammate and countryman Jenson Button was downbeat after finishing 12th and acknowledged his title defense was virtually over. He is 42 points behind Alonso with two races remaining.

“Everyone else needs to have failures,” Button said. “That’s the way it is. I don’t know what happened, but there must have been something wrong because the car was undriveable,” the defending champion added.

“If I can’t mathematically win it I’d do whatever I needed to, to help the team. My championship, if the other guys don’t have non-scores or issues, is pretty much over. But you don’t win championships by sitting back and saying ‘I can’t win it any more’. You have to keep on fighting.”

City deny Rooney contact as clubs weigh up offers

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini denied on Wednesday that his club had approached Wayne Rooney in a bid to sign the striker from cross-town rival Manchester United.

Big-spending City was one of the teams heavily linked to speculation about Rooney, who has told United manager Alex Ferguson he does not want to extend his contract at Old Trafford beyond 2012.

Mancini said City hasn't spoken to the Englad international and believes the 24-year-old Rooney won't go anywhere.

"Rooney is a great player but I think he'll stay at United," said Mancini. "He's a good player, he's an important player for United.

"He is a United player. It's not correct to speak about that situation. I have respect for him, for Ferguson, for United. I want to speak only about my players."

Chelsea and Real Madrid have already said they would be interested in signing Rooney if he carried out his threat to leave United, as Europe's major clubs weigh up bids in the January transfer window.

City, which is owned by Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Mansour, would be one of the few clubs who could afford to pay the wages Rooney may demand.

Mansour has spent more than 300 million pounds ($475 million) on players, including Carlos Tevez, who left United in 2009 after his contract ran out to join City. Tevez had a season earlier teamed up with Rooney to win the Champions League with United in 2008.

Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said on Tuesday "everybody will be interested" if United was willing to sell Rooney before his transfer value starts to plummet as the end of his contract approaches.

"If at the end of the day Man United decide that he is to leave, then give me a call," said Mourinho.

If Rooney was to favor a move to Madrid, he would link up again with Cristiano Ronaldo, who struck up a superb partnership with the England striker at Old Trafford before leaving for the Spanish giants for 80 million pounds in June 2009.

"But I believe he belongs to Man United, he belongs to Man United fans, he belongs to Old Trafford. I believe he is going to stay," Mourinho added.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Monday that his club would be keen to move for Rooney if the striker was on the market.

Spanish champion and three-time European Cup winner Barcelona was also widely reported as a potential bidder for Rooney.

"He is one of the greatest players in the world as there are very few players with his qualities," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was quoted as telling The Sun newspaper. "He's a player I very much admire."

Sections of the British press said on Wednesday that money was the key factor behind Rooney's decision to walk away from United, despite Ferguson's claim that the club was willing to offer "the best terms possible for any player in the country."

Spain players head FIFA Ballon d'Or nominations

Seven players from Spain's World Cup-winning team, including Barcelona trio Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Xavi Hernandez, were nominated Tuesday for the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or world player of the year award.

The 23-man list also has three players who starred both at the World Cup and for their club last season: Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan of Uruguay and Europa League champion Atletico Madrid; Wesley Sneijder of runner-up the Netherlands and Champions League winner Inter Milan; and Thomas Mueller of Germany and Champions League runner-up Bayern Munich, who was top scorer and voted best young player in South Africa.

The past two winners - Lionel Messi of Argentina and Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Real Madrid - are nominated despite disappointing World Cup campaigns.

"Hopefully the trophy will remain in Barcelona," Messi told France Football magazine. "I hope it will be for one of ours."

Six players from Barcelona - Daniel Alves, Iniesta, Messi, Carles Puyol, Xavi and Villa, who joined the Catalan outfit from Valencia - are on the shortlist.

Barcelona retained the Spanish title last season with Messi scoring 34 goals to finish as the league's top scorer. Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions and won the Golden Boot, a prize awarded to Europe's top marksman.

"Of course I would be happy to win the Ballon d'Or for a second straight year," Messi said. "But I think the World Cup will weigh a lot in the balance."

Messi failed to score a single goal at the World Cup in South Africa, where Argentina lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarterfinals.

The 23 players nominated all took part in the World Cup while nine of them played the Champions League final won by Inter over Bayern Munich.

The 2007 winner Kaka is left off the list, which includes of his Brazil teammates Daniel Alves of Barcelona, and Inter Milan pair Julio Cesar and Maicon.

Chelsea's Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba and Arsenal's Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas are among the three English Premier League players nominated while no English, French or Italian players are sortlisted.

The award, formerly known as the FIFA World Player of the Year, is being staged jointly for the first time by FIFA and France Football magazine, which first presented the original Ballon d'Or in 1956.

Votes will be cast by captains and head coaches of men's and women's national teams plus ivited journalists.

A top-three shortlist will be announced Dec. 6, and the winner named at a ceremony in Zurich on Jan. 10.

Among the 10 candidates for the women's world player award are Brazil's Marta and Germany's Birgit Prinz, who have combined to win the past seven titles.

Awards for the best en's and women's coach will be made for the first time.

Spain's Vicente del Bosque is competing for the men's honor with nine rivals including Oscar Tabarez of World Cup semifinalist Uruguay and Jose Mourinho, who won the Champions League with Inter Milan before joining Real Madrid.

The women's list cntains Maren Meinert, who led Germany to the Women's Under-20 World Cup title in July, and Albertin Montoya of FC Gold Pride, champion of the United States' Women's Professional Soccer league.

At the January gala, FIFA also will announce a World XI team in conjunction with the FIFPro group of players' unios, the Puskas Award for most beautiful goal of the year, a presidential award and a prize for fair play.

Yamaha allows Rossi to test for Ducati

By Matt Beer

Valentino Rossi has been given clearance to test the Ducati for the first time in the post-season sessions at Valencia next month.

Yamaha's contract with Rossi does not expire until the end of the season, but he had urged the team to give him dispensation to start work with his new employer immediately after the 2010 racing season ends.

Two months after his deal with Ducati was announced, Rossi said he finally has permission from Yamaha racing boss Masao Furusawa to switch to Ducati for the Valencia tests, which take place in the days after the season finale at the Spanish track on 7 November.

"Last night I spoke with Furusawa," Rossi was quoted as saying by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, "and he said that I can test the Ducati after the Valencia GP.

"I think that it's the right choice after everything there has been between us and a way to thank me for my work and commitment. I would like to thank them; it's a nice sportsmanlike gesture, also because with the limits on testing it's not as if you decide when you can do the tests."

News that Rossi can test that Ducati next month, plus his improved form in the last two grands prix, also makes it virtually certain that he will complete the season and wait until the winter break before having surgery on the niggling shoulder injury that has affected his form this year.

The Valencia test will also see Casey Stoner having his first run with Honda after leaving Ducati.

Stoner targeting strong set-up and Hayden eyeing podium

With three wins from the four previous rounds Casey Stoner is a rider in form and the Ducati Team rider will be aiming to deliver the Bologna factory it’s first MotoGP win at the Estoril circuit in this weekend’s Grande Premio de Portugal.

Stoner finished second in last year’s race – Ducati’s best premier class result at Estoril to date – and comes into Round 17 off the back of a dominant victory in his home GP at Phillip Island last time out.

“I have had a mixture of different results at Estoril - some good like my first 250cc win in 2005 and a podium in 2007, some not so good like when we had a problem with the on-board camera in 2008. Then we were back on the podium again in 2009,” said the 25 year-old. “I was fast there last year but Jorge (Lorenzo) was a little faster. He is very strong at this circuit and I think we can expect him to be so again next Sunday.”

Stoner continued: “We just have to focus on the job of setting the bike up. We know that there are a lot of bumps here and our bike usually reacts quite aggressively over bumps, so we will have to see if we can adapt the set up. The GP10 has worked well in all kinds of conditions over the last few races so we're pretty confident.”

Across the garage team-mate Nicky Hayden was on the pace all weekend at Phillip Island and missed out on a podium place by less than four-tenths of a second. The American is hopeful that he can mark the end of his 2010 campaign with a strong finish and improve on his Championship position of seventh in the last two rounds.

“The end of the season is on the horizon but we have two races left to do well in so it's now or never as far as this season is concerned,” he said. “Estoril is pretty normal, there's nothing really special about the track apart from a very fast section onto the back straight and then towards the end of the lap there's a chicane which I think is the slowest in MotoGP. The track is very tight, which makes it demanding, and given that the circuit is close to the ocean, like Phillip Island, you usually get wind and changeable weather. In any case we are ready for any conditions and looking to finish the season in a positive way."

Checa confirmed for last two rounds with Pramac

Pramac Racing today (Monday, October 25th) confirmed that Carlos Checa will ride for them in the final two rounds of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship at Estoril and Valencia. The 38 year-old Spaniard replaces Finnish rider Mika Kallio, who decided following the previous round in Australia to end his partnership with the team early as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury.

Checa, who last rode in the World Championship in the 2007 Valencia GP and who finished third in this year’s WSBK championship on a Ducati 1098R, told motogp.com of his excitement at his participation in the upcoming two races.

“I’ll take it as an opportunity. I want to use this to gain experience and enjoy it too. My sole aim is to adapt as quickly as I can,” said Checa, who tested the Desmosedici GP10 at Mugello a fortnight ago. “It’s a great challenge. I’ve only been able to do a small test at Mugello and the people I will be up against in these two races will have had 16 races this season. They’ll know the tyres, which I won’t, and obviously the bikes they’re riding.”

Comparing his previous experience in MotoGP to the development of the current 800cc machines, Checa said of the GP10: “The bike has great power, the tyres have improved greatly especially the rear ones. And of course the electronics now play a bigger role. It’s very rewarding to be able to ride one of the best bikes in the World Championship after riding one of the best in superbikes this season.”

He continued: “I don’t know what level I’ll be at or what I’ll find. I just want to feel like I’ve given my maximum whatever happens. But we will take as much as possible from it and I’m sure we’ll take something good.”

Team Manager Paolo Campinoti added: “After Mika Kallio’s decision to not take part in the last two races we decided to call on a rider with experience and talent that could give us a good end to the season. Thanks also to consultations with Ducati, we decided on Carlos Checa. Of course it will be important for him to get as much time as possible on the Estoril track during the free practice sessions so that he can improve his feeling with the bike. We know about his undoubted talent and potential, and this is why we expect a good result in both races.”

Checa will ride with the number 71 on his livery for the remaining rounds of the campaign.

Davydenko beaten, Sick Youzhny pulls out

Moscow - The Kremlin Cup suffered a double blow on Wednesday when top seed Nikolay Davydenko was beaten in his opening match while champion Mikhail Youzhny was forced to pull out with a virus infection.

"I had made a decision to withdraw after losing my doubles match," Youzhny, seeded second, told reporters.

"I don`t feel well at all and I don`t think I would have been able to play the singles in such condition.

"I will now have to take a break from training for a few days and see how I feel," added the world number nine, still with a chance to qualify for the World Tour Finals in London next month.

"I`m scheduled to play next week in St Petersburg but right now I`m not sure if I`ll be able to be there. I`ll have to make a decision by the end of the week."

Davydenko, who like his Russian compatriot Youzhny had a bye in the first round, lost his opening match for the second week in a row, going down to Uruguay`s Pablo Cuevas 7-6 7-6.

Davydenko has recently struggled to find the kind of form that helped him to win the season-ending World Tour Finals in London last year.

Wednesday`s double setback has added to the disappointments of the home crowd and local organisers of the annual ATP and WTA tournament that had been decimated by the withdrawals of high-profile players, particularly on the women`s side.

Russians Vera Zvonareva, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova and 2009 champion Francesca Schiavone all pulled out. Serbia`s eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic, who lost to Youzhny in last year`s final, was bundled out in the first round on Wednesday by Horacio Zeballos 4-6 6-4 6-3.

On the women`s side, second seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus beat Germany`s Andrea Petkovic 6-4 2-6 6-1 and eighth-seeded Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez saw off Ukraine`s Alona Bondarenko 6-4 1-6 6-1 to reach the last eight. (A008/F005/S026)

Italian Wins Climbathon, But Spaniard Takes Home World Series Title

Kundasang (Sabah) -- Spain's Tofol Castaner took home the men's title of the 2010 Skyrunners World Series after he amassed 347 points overall when the final leg of the series, the 24th Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon, concluded here today. Despite finishing third in the race up and down Mount Kinabalu, Castaner's 347 points was enough to bring home the trophy.

Italy's Marco De Gasperi won the race in a time of two hours 33 minutes and 56 seconds, setting a new Climbathon Men's Open record after beating the old record he himself had set in 2003 (2'36.59s).

Castaner clocked 2'58.09s, while Nepal's Sudip Kulung, who made his debut this year, finished second in 2'46.14s.

Spain's Jessed Hernandez finished second overall in the series with 324 points, ahead of fellow countryman Sebastian Sanchez Saez with 303 points.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's Safrey Sumping finished fifth clocking 3'02.47s, but hoped he had done better as last year he had clocked 3'00.22s to finish the race in ninth place.

Ronaldo fires unbeaten Real top

Madrid - Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain both scored braces as Real Madrid made it ten goals in two games with a 4-1 win at Malaga on Saturday to move top of the Spanish first division.

Portuguese star Ronaldo moved to the top of the goalscoring charts on six following his double and Jose Mourinho`s Real have the best attack and defence in the league lying a point ahead of Barcelona and Valencia at the summit.

Real are now the only unbeaten side in the league after champions Barcelona inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Valencia coming from behind to win 2-1 at Camp Nou.

Barca fell behind to a Pablo Hernandez goal on 37 minutes but turned the game around with a mesmerising second half thanks to goals from Spanish World Cup winners Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol.

"In the first half we didn`t have the ball and that was the key factor, however, equalising just after the interval was so important and really helped us," said goalscorer Iniesta.
Real responded by going a point above Barcelona and Valencia following up the 6-1 thrashing of Deportivo La Coruna with a 4-1 rout of Malaga.

Madrid hit the woodwork twice through Higuain and Sami Khedira before Higuain broke the deadlock on the half hour mark side-footing in a terrific cross-field ball from Ronaldo.

Ronaldo then got himself on the score-sheet with Mesut Ozil putting the ball on a plate for an easy tap-in.

Five minutes after the break Ozil was needlessly fouled in the penalty area and Ronaldo smashed home the resulting spot-kick for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Higuain grabbed his second and fifth of the season on 65 minutes and it could have been more as Real sent a warning to AC Milan who they host in the Champions League on Tuesday.

For Malaga it was another miserable home performance and they have lost all four of their home games so far.

Barcelona have been indifferent at home this season dropping five points in their first three matches, however, they got back on track with a crucial 2-1 home triumph over rivals Valencia.

Pablo Hernandez shot Valencia into a 37th minute lead but Barcelona produced a second half masterclass to turn the game around.

Two minutes after the break Iniesta surged forward before feeding Xavi who returned the ball to his team-mate who finished brilliantly.

Barca were a different side thereafter and David Villa had a header acrobatically saved
by Cesar Sanchez on the hour mark.

But two minutes later Carles Puyol met Xavi`s cross with a bullet header to put Barca ahead with what proved the winning goal.

Villa could have had a hat-trick against his old club -- where he spent five years before joining Barca for 40 million euros in the summer -- but found 39-year-old goalkeeper Cesar in great form.

"We had two clear chances in the first half but they levelled early in the second and that was a real handicap for us," said Valencia coach Unai Emery.

"Barca pushed us back after that even though we had the desire to attack and try and win the game."

Valencia hope to bounce back from this defeat with a Champions League group match at Scottish side Rangers on Wednesday while Barcelona host FC Copenhagen in their group game on the same day.

On Monday fourth-placed Villarreal can nudge Real Madrid, currently two points ahead, off the top providing they can beat promoted Hercules.

Earlier Atletico Madrid moved to within three points of the leading duo with a 2-0 win over derby rivals Getafe at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday.

An unfortunate own goal from goalkeeper Jordi Codina on 37 minutes and a Diego Costa strike on 72 minutes helped Atletico move fifth. (Uu.SYS/A008/R009)

Rescued Chile miners invited to Manchester United match

London - English Premier League football giants Manchester United have invited the 33 Chilean miners who survived weeks trapped underground to attend one of their matches, one of the team`s sponsors said.

The invitation was conveyed to Chilean President Sebastian Pinera in a weekend meeting in London with the club`s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Rafael Guilisasti, vice chairman of sponsor Vina Concha y Toro.

The miners were invited to attend a Premier League match at the team`s Old Trafford ground next year, said Vina Concha y Toro on Sunday in a statement.

Ferguson also presented Pinera with a signed team shirt from the club during the meeting.

"The courage, bravery and resilience of the miners and the rescue teams was inspirational. It is a privilege to be able to extend an invitation to Old Trafford," Ferguson was quoted as saying in the statement.

Pinera arrived in London on Saturday and will also head to Paris and Berlin during the visit, following last week`s dramatic rescue of the miners who were trapped for 69 days in a mine in the Atacama region of chile.

On Monday, he will meet Prime Minister David Cameron in Downing Street and Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace. (U.KR-BPY/H-AK/P003)

McLaren extend Vodafone deal

McLaren, who first teamed up with Vodafone back in 2007, confirmed the extended deal on Thursday which will see Vodafone remain as their official title sponsor while also becoming McLaren's total communications partner.

"Vodafone is without doubt the best title partner that we at McLaren have ever had," said McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh.

"Why do I say that? Well, the word 'partner' says it all. Vodafone is our partner in a very genuine sense of that word - a very real contributor to an ever-evolving series of high-tech innovations on our cars and within our operating systems."

"That's why I know I speak on behalf of all at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes when I say how delighted I am that our two companies have agreed not only to renew our partnership but also to relaunch it.

"As a result, we'll tirelessly develop our technological collaborations, at the same time as engaging Vodafone's customers in some truly innovative ways.

"I like to think that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is the most inclusive team in the world's most exclusive sport - and, with that ethos in mind, we'll be unveiling some very exciting Vodafone McLaren Mercedes marketing initiatives in the near future."

Bernie: I knew Korea could get it done

The Korea International Circuit was only granted a safety licence nine days ago, and cosmetic touches are today still being applied ahead of Sunday's inaugural Korean Grand Prix.

The Korean army have been drafted in to help with the completion of the erection of a number of grandstands that on Sunday will house a crowd between 90,000 and 100,000.

Ecclestone, though, always believed the organisers would deliver, and he is delighted with the end product.

"Considering what it was and what they've had to do, and this event has not been easy to do, I think they've done a good job," said Ecclestone.

"It's all there. If they hadn't have had their bad weather then it would have been done a long time ago.

"But I wasn't worried because I had some information they would get it done, and they've got it done.

"It would have been bad for Korea if it hadn't have happened, so they have made sure it happened.

"When you look at these facilities, and you look at some of the places we go to, and have been in the past, you can see what it took to build Formula One to what it is today."

One of the areas sorely lacking is accommodation with a number of less-than-salubrious motels being employed to house teams, media and fans.

That prompted an apology from Chung Yung-cho, the CEO of organisers Korea Auto Valley Operations.

"For the last couple of months we have worked hard, day and night," said Chung.

"If you are not 100 per cent satisfied please accept my apologies. I will do better for next year.

"We will prepare more hotels and facilities. I can guarantee we will work harder and you will have better."

As mentioned by Ecclestone, the weather wreaked havoc on plans as the circuit should have been completed by the end of July, in line with FIA regulations.

It is why, 24 hours ahead of Friday's opening practice sessions, there remain teething problems.

Up until late last night, a number of teams had no electricity in the garages.

Park Joon-yung, governor of the Jeollanam-do province, said: "We are finishing the cleaning of the circuit, and the infrastructure will be done by the end of the day.

"We were planning to finish this project in late July, however due to bad weather it delayed us.

"In April and throughout the whole of July we had a massive amount of rain, which is unusual for Korean weather, so that led to the delays in construction.

"Thankfully the weather was helpful in September and this month and we were able to work day and night to finish the construction."

Alonso: My best F1 season ever

The revelation comes as a major surprise when you consider Alonso's title-winning exploits with Renault in 2005 and 2006.

But his remarks clearly underline his depth of feeling with Ferrari after joining the Scuderia at the start of the year.

"For me personally it's been a great 2010 Championship driving for a new team," said the 29-year-old Spaniard.

"From day one there has been great integration with Ferrari. I've felt very comfortable.

"It has been the best year of my career so far, a great experience and I'm very happy."

The crowning glory for Alonso would be to become Champion for a third time, but he concedes even if that failed to happen it would not take the gloss off his year.

"In terms of happiness, motivation, driving, the team itself, it's my best season," said Alonso, ahead of Sunday's Korean Grand Prix in which he trails leader Mark Webber by 14 points.

"It would be nice to become Champion this year, but if we cannot do it, I will still have great memories of 2010.

"But with three races remaining we will do our best to arrive to a position in (the final race in) Abu Dhabi still in the fight.

"We've made some good steps forward in the last five to six races, so it should be an exciting last few races, hopefully making the most of every weekend."

Lotus sign gearbox and hydraulics supply deal with Red Bull

Written by David

The Lotus Racing F1 team announced today that they have signed a deal with Red Bull Technology for the supply of gearboxes and hydraulic systems from the 2011 season and beyond. The announcement marks the next critical building block in the process of stepping up the team’s challenge for honours in the FIA Formula One World Championship and is a major statement of intent about their future aspirations.

“The announcement that we have reached a multi-year agreement with Red Bull Technology for the supply of our gearboxes and hydraulics from 2011 is obviously a massive step forward for us, both in engineering terms, and as an expression of our ambitions for next year and for future Championships,” said Lotus Racing Chief Technical Officer, Mike Gascoyne. “The gearbox – hydraulics package obviously plays a critical role in the performance of the car, not just on track but in design and packaging terms, and this deal gives our design and aero teams a very exciting platform to work with. The removal of the double diffusers in 2011 will allow the whole grid to tighten up the rear bodywork and mechanical structures around the gearbox, and this supply deal will allow us to capitalise on that with our 2011 car. Exciting times lie ahead!”

“We are very pleased about Lotus Racing’s decision to use Red Bull Technology gearboxes and hydraulic systems from 2011,” said Red Bull Racing Team Principal, Christian Horner. “The fact that Red Bull Technology has been chosen to be a supplier to another team despite its short history demonstrates how much we have achieved since our first season. We very much look forward to working with Lotus Racing from 2011 onwards.”

“Din, Nasa, the whole team and I are absolutely delighted to be able to announce our gearbox and hydraulics partnership with Red Bull Technology,” added Lotus Racing Team Principal, Tony Fernandes. “It is a real statement of our intention to challenge for Formula One honours as soon as we can that we have reached this agreement and we are very excited about integrating the package into our 2011 car. I think people in and out of the sport are going to be following our progress even more closely now we have taken this incredibly important and ambitious step, and it makes next year even more exciting. The Lotus Racing dream grows bigger every day!”

Rooney plunges United in crisis

What began as tabloid rumour became dramatic football fact this week when it was revealed Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson was quick to dismiss claims it was due to a fall out between the two but whatever the reason it is a serious dent to United’s hopes of silverware this season.

In the Champions League last season Rooney virtually carried the Red Devils to the quarter finals, before an ankle injury suffered against Bayern Munich proved the beginning of the end for his and United’s campaign, as those who bet on Champions League games will no doubt remember.

This year the club made a shaky start – etching out a nervy goalless draw with Scottish Champions Rangers. A win in Valencia got them back on track, but the latest revelations regarding Rooney has hit their preparations for the home tie against Bursapor.

An ankle injury is set to keep the England striker out anyway, but if he does leave in January, how far can United realistically go? The Champions League predictions suggest they could struggle.

Since the departure of Ronaldo he is their main goal threat, with the frustratingly inconsistent Dimitatr Berbatov and inexperienced Javier Hernandez their only other options.

Saturday’s league draw with West Brom also highlighted United’s deficiencies at the back and you have to wonder whether they can even get out of their group, let alone reach the latter stages.

Fergie has overcome plenty of challenges in his illustrious career, but this one could be his toughest yet.

Rooney’s Future In Doubt As Man Utd Drop More Points

Over the weekend many would have thought that the biggest news story surrounding Man Utd would be the 2-2 draw at home to West Brom on Saturday, which saw Man Utd again lose a two goal lead to get their fifth draw of the league season. However the biggest story of the weekend was the news than Wayne Rooney is refusing to sign a new contract with the club and could leave as early as January.

Wayne Rooney has been in the newspapers for all the wrong reasons over the past couple of months with his form appearing to suffer for it. His performances in Man Utd shirts have been a shadow of what we have come to expect. The club have left him out of important matches appearing to want to protect the player but it appears as if there has been more to it with rumours that Rooneys relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson has deteriorated, possibly beyond repair.

The stories surrounding Rooneys refusal to sign a new contract are varied with some stating that the club simple won’t meet his wage demands with others seeming to point directly to his relationship with his manager.

Unsurprisingly there will be a number of clubs interested in signing Rooney with Chelsea, Man City, Barcelona and Real Madrid all clubs linked with possible moves. Man City are thought to be the early favourites being able to meet the transfer fee and salary demands. Whether he will be seen in the new Man Utd shirt next season remains to be seen.

The speculation surrounding Rooney is the last thing Man Utd need. The club are not too far behind in the league at the moment but need to start wining games if they are to realistically compete for the title this season and with their top striker possibly looking towards the exit door it doesn’t exactly inspire the other players in the team who looked to Rooney last year to drive the team forward.

There are sure to be a number of developments over the coming weeks with this story but if it proves to be true, and Rooney is heading for the exit door, then this will intensify the need for Man Utd to invest considerably in their squad. Man Utd already look weak in some positions and depend on players that are coming to the end of their careers. These players need to be replaced with top quality players and if Rooney goes, potentially relatively cheaply, it will be near on impossible to replace everyone with players of a similar standard.

Newcastle to see the best of Nolan

Kevin Nolan still has an important part to play at Newcastle United, despite the face he missed the game against Wigan, manager Chris Hughton has claimed.

The midfielder had established himself as a first team regular at the club but, according to Hughton, the intensity of modern football has taken its toll and he needed a rest and the player should be fresher when he returns.

With Newcastle forced to dig deep in order to secure a draw against a Wigan side they would once have been expected to crush with ease, fans of the club could well be forgiven for being impatient in their desire to see their side return to the lofty heights they achieved under the famous reign of Kevin Keegan.

Despite not reaching these heights again just yet, newly promoted Newcastle have shown that they are a side fully capable of competing successfully in the Premier League after spending what seemed like a long season in the Championship. The Newcastle betting always suggested they’d bounce back from relegation, and they did.

However, there is still a long way before the side can once again challenge England’s best clubs on a regular basis. Indeed, a look at the football betting tips shows Newcastle are in for something of a relegation scrap this season.

Having said that, Newcastle and their fans certainly enjoy showing the footballing world that they are a top club with the most passionate of supporters and will be looking to individuals like Nolan and striker Andy Carroll to prove to their critics just how good they can be.

Do The Champions Have Enough Depth To Lift The Title Again?

Chelsea have had a fantastic start to the season and there is no doubt that they are very much the title favourites at the moment. They also have an impressive goal difference of 21 from the first 7 games. However with the news that Yossi Benayoun is set for a 6 month stint on the sidelines do Chelsea have enough in their squad to win the title again?

So far this season Chelsea have been without Frank Lampard, John Terry and Alex with Jose Bosingwa also still out. These men have all been consistent performers in Chelsea shirts and although they do have strength in some positions others, particularly central defence, looks weak especially as they didn’t sign a central defender to replace Ricardo Carvalho who moved to Real Madrid in the summer.

It is by no means panic stations for Chelsea at the moment but if they are to compete in both the Premiership and the Champions League this season then their needs to be some squad rotation involved if the players are to last the whole season.

The Chelsea squad is considerably weakened from last year with Joe Cole, Michael Ballack, Deco, Ricardo Carvalho and Juliano Belletti all having left the club and the only summer arrivals being Ramires and Benayoun. Even though all of the players above didn’t play week in week out for Chelsea they were always quality options that they had to bring on that they no longer do.

The hope is that Chelsea are able to bring through some of their younger players to fill the gaps, however there has been very little young talent coming into the Chelsea team over the last few seasons so it s going to be a big step up for the youngsters.

If Chelsea can keep the majority of their first team squad fit then they are still in pole position for the title but with Manchester City in particular not far behind. and with a much larger squad of first team players, Chelsea can not afford to get complacent or pick up too many injuries otherwise they may not be able to retain the title this season.

Chelsea ease through Champions League openers

Having started the Premier League season in fantastic form, Chelsea have also started the Champions League in a rich vein of form that has seen them clearly demonstrate why they are one of the current favourites with Champions league betting to lift the trophy at Wembley come next May.

Even though they are a side which is still ironing out one or two difficulties (having been beaten by a well-organised Manchester City side in the Premier League), they have also shown that they are a team capable of beating their main rivals, having comprehensively overcome the challenge posed by London rivals Arsenal in a recent tie in the Premier League.

With players such as Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard having failed to show their best form in the European competition this season, Chelsea are surely only going to improve as the competition progresses, a fact that is likely to worry rivals such as Barcelona, who will be looking to continue their rivalry with the London side come the knockout stages of the Champions League.

However, with the competition still in its early days, Chelsea know that they still have some work to do in order to ensure that they are certain to win their group and subsequently improve their chances of facing a weaker side in the first round of the knockout stages.

Should they slacken off before this time, however, the Champions League odds believe that Chelsea are likely to face a far more difficult time if they wish to pick up their first Champions League trophy at Wembley next year.

Spurs finally mixing it with the big boys

It has been 49 years since Tottenham Hotspur were last in Europe’s premier club competition. Since then, man has walked on the moon, the Beatles formed (and subsequently split up), and the Berlin wall was brought crashing down by a combination of the collapse of the Eastern Bloc – whichever way you look at it, that’s a long wait for another chance at the big time.

But if you asked their fans whether the wait has been worth it, the majority would probably say yes. When fully fit, the team now looks strong in all departments, and the man at the helm, Harry Redknapp, is one of the most respected coaches in the Premier League. He is currently strong favourite to take over the national side when Fabio Capello steps down at the end of the European Championships in 2012 – a change that many feel is long overdue following the unsuccessful reign of Steve McLaren and our poor showing at the World Cup in South Africa.

And why not? When he took over the reins at Spurs, they were languishing at the bottom of the table, but that season he guided them to an eighth place finish and refurbished his squad with an array of exciting internationals such as Jermaine Defoe, Wilson Palacios and Robbie Keane – a player previously struggling for form at rivals Liverpool. He got the best from the players he already had at his disposal, and enhanced the belief and performances from those he brought in – a trait which saw him guide Spurs to a fourth place finish last term. But he’s being realistic about the challenge he faces this season.

Spurs are currently suffering something of an injury crisis in defence, with King, Gallas, Assou-Ekotto, Dawson and Woodgate all taking up space on the physio table, but get them back fit and there’s no reason why last season’s success should be a one-off, the Spurs betting certainly suggests they’re in with a chance.

Add those players to a midfield reinforced with the signing of Rafael Van der Vaart – a genuine world-beater bought for a knock-down price – and a front line of Pavlyuchenko, Keane, Crouch and Defoe, they look like they could give any side in Europe a game. We’ll know more after their midweek encounter with Inter Milan, but Spurs have to believe they are where they deserve to be – and if they do, then the current holders could be in for quite a shock come Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, the Blackburn betting suggests the side could pick up three points against Sunderland this weekend.

The north-east team has a woeful away record and could slip up again.
