Ancelotti denies Roma rumors

London - English Premier League side Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday that he plans to stay at Chelsea despite the team's poor results recently.

Chelsea dropped off the pace in the race for the Premier League title and also crashed out of the FA Cup to Everton, which made the 51-year-old's future and Stamford Bridge in doubt.

Ancelotti has been linked with a move to former club Roma after ex-Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri left the Stadio Olimpico last week.

However, Ancelotti said he remains committed to Chelsea and is focused on finishing the season well with the West London outfit.

"I count on staying where I am," Ancelotti said. "I am still Italian, but I appreciate the English, even if at times their press exaggerates things, like in the case of Rino Gattuso."

"I am thinking about the Champions League and fourth place at the minimum in the Premier League. I have drummed it into the team: think about the final at Wembley. I am working a lot," he said.

Lavicka re-signs with A-League side Sydney FC

Canberra - Vitezslav Lavicka of the Czech Republic was reappointed as coach of Australian A-League champions Sydney FC through to the 2011/12 season, the club confirmed on Friday.

Lavicka, who snared the A-League Premiership and Championship in his debut season in 2009/10, will be in charge of Sydney FC for the third straight season, club vice-chairman Scott Barlow said.

Lavicka's contract extension comes ahead of Sydney's opening AFC Champions League match against South Korea's Suwon Bluewings in Sydney next Wednesday.

"We are extremely happy to have secured Vitezslav for the 2011/12 A-League season," Barlow said. "We have the utmost respect for him as a coach and as an individual and it is a very positive decision for the club and allows us to proceed with certainty into the future."

Santana says Nadal will be sporting great

Spanish tennis great Manuel Santana believes Rafael Nadal is not just the best athlete to come out of Spain but is on his way to being the greatest sportsman of all time.

Santana says Nadal is "without a doubt the best Spanish athlete but being o young he'll finish by being the best world athlete."

The 24-year-old Nadal became the seventh player to complete a career Grand Slam in September with his U.S. Open victory. That came after French Open and Wimbledon triumphs earlier in the summer.

Santana was previously Spain's most successful player with four Grand Slam titles. Nadal has won nine.

Over 10,000 athletes to participate in Asian Games

More than 14,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries have registered to take part in the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November, a games official says.

“We have received event entry forms from 45 countries and regions, including 10,156 for athletes and 4,202 team officials,” Asian Games external relations chief Sun Xiuqing said Thursday.

The committee will screen the applications, and expect the process to be complete shortly before the games begin, he said.

“We still keep registration open until the final moments," Sun said.

The Games, which are claimed to be the biggest ever in terms of sporting events, will run between Nov. 12 and Nov. 27, and will feature 42 sports.

Sun said the construction of competition venues for the games had been completed, and now they were undergoing final stages of testing.

Besides arranging registration process, the committee already appointed and authorized more than 4,300 international and domestic technical officials to run and oversee the games.

The committee has also sealed cooperation with the China Anti Doping Agency to conduct doping tests and controls for athletes taking part in the games, to ensure fairness is maintained.

Meanwhile, the same committee will also run Asian Para Games between Dec. 12 and Dec. 19. More than 2,200 people living with disabilities, from 39 countries, are expected to take part. (A'an Suryana)

Ali Al Muhairi wins Rashid Festival ride

By M. Satya Narayan

Abu Dhabi: The two horses that Ali Mohammad Al Muhairi prepared for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky last year have obliged the endurance rider with two successive wins this season.

Yesterday, Al Muhairi, a member of the UAE team which won a team gold and an individual silver at the WEG, rode 13-year-old Fenwick Cadenza to victory in the Shaikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Challenge Festival 2011 120-km Endurance Ride.

He won in a time of 4hrs 27min and 36secs.

It followed Al Muahiri's win on Karabil Kalya Hai in the Shaikh Maktoum Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Challenge last month.

"Both the horses had qualified for the 160-km World Endurance Championship but did not run there. We brought them back here and after a two-month rest I am happy that I was able to score victories on both of them," said Al Muhairi. "It was a tough race and South Africa's Gerda, who came second is a strong rider. Ali Khyalfan Al Jahouri, who finished third has a great record here in Al Wathba but my horse was in great shape."

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai attended the ride.

Also present was Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance and Shaikh Tahnoun Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Presidential Flights and Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.

Djokovic backs Murray for Grand Slam

By Alaric Gomes

Dubai: Novak Djokovic has strongly backed his long-time rival Andy Murray to eventually win a Grand Slam.

"I am sure it is not easy for him to lose the third Grand Slam final in-a-row," Djokovic said.

"But he has faced that situation before and I am sure he is going to recover fast because he is mentally strong player.

"He [Murray] needs a little bit more time to find his way through to the title. He has everything he needs to get one. He has shown it many times before."

Djokovic beat Murray in straight sets in last month's final of the Australian Open. And prior to that, Murray had fallen to Roger Federer on two successive occasions - the 2008 US Open and 2010 Australian Open.

Rossi collects Laureus Award in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi was the venue on Monday night as multiple MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi collected his prestigious ‘Comeback of the Year’ Laureus Award, following a 2010 season which saw the then Yamaha rider return from a broken leg at Mugello to win the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Nine-time World Champion Rossi, who switches from Yamaha to Ducati for this season, saw off numerous sporting stars for the award including US golfer Paula Creamer, American sprinter Tyson Gay, Belgian tennis star Justine Henin and athletes Carolina Kluft and Merlene Ottey.

The chief awards, Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, were picked up by Spanish Grand Slam tennis Champion Rafael Nadal and American skier Lindsey Vonn, respectively.

During the ceremony it was also announced that five-time 500cc World Champion Mick Doohan has been elected to join the Laureus World Sports Academy, joining fellow two-wheeled title winner Giacomo Agostini in the process.

Nieto announces MotoGP retirement

Fonsi Nieto has announced that he is to retire from racing, having been unable to fully recover from injuries to contest the 2011 season in a suitable manner. The Spaniard, nephew of former multiple motorcycle title winner Ángel and now 32, has released a statement in Spanish on his personal website.

‘As you all know I was ready to participate in Moto2 this season, but after trying much medication all winter I have decided to end my career,’ he writes.

‘Making the decision has been difficult for me and, thanks to my cousins and my personal sponsor Confremar, I was in a privileged position in these difficult times for everyone.

But unfortunately for me, my foot still is not 100 percent to compete at the highest level and I would be unable to offer much to my team and everyone who supports me.

Retirement is a withdrawal which causes me endless grief because the motorcycle has been and will always be my life. But I'm satisfied. Satisfied with what the world and the bike have given me, both in sporting and human terms.

I have lived through great moments, moments I would never have dreamed of, and I have known and worked with amazing people who made a child’s dream come true.’

Heidfeld stakes his Renault claim

Nick Heidfeld (1:20.361) set the fastest time on day three of the Jerez test as he staked his claim to taking over Robert Kubica's seat at Renault.

As well as Heidfeld familiarizing himself with the car, the team ran flow viz paint as engineers verified aerodynamic characteristics. "I really enjoyed the day," Heidfeld said. "It was fun driving the car although it obviously takes time to get used to things when it's your first time in a car and working with a new team. We had a good day, without too many problems, and luckily all the changes we made to the car went in the right direction and improved things, so I was able to push harder and harder. In terms of the lap times, it's very difficult for me to compare with the other teams because we don't know the fuel levels or what the others were doing. My first impressions of the car were positive, although there are always areas where you can improve."

Team principal Eric Boullier added: "Today we had the chance to give Nick time in the car and we carried out a big evaluation. Our first feelings are very positive: he worked well with the team, gave good feedback and improved the car during the day. We managed to cover 86 laps and the times are encouraging."

Fernando Alonso (1:20.493) took over testing duties for Ferrari, completing 131 laps and finishing the day second fastest after trying all four Pirelli tyre compounds.

Michael Schumacher (1:21.054) ended up just over half a second shy of the Ferrari as Mercedes concentrated on systems checks with the adjustable rear wing and then general balance over longer runs. "At the end of my two test days in Jerez, I can only be happy with what we have achieved here," Schumacher said.

A shortage of spares meant that Lewis Hamilton (1:21.090) was only able to record 36 laps during the third day of McLaren's work. New components will arrive overnight in time for Jenson Button to take over in the new MP4-26 once again tomorrow.

Kamui Kobayashi (1:21.242) had his first full day of testing with Sauber's C30 and concentrated on general set-up work until his day was cut short by an engine problem.

World champion Sebastian Vettel (1:21.574) mirrored Mark Webber's programme from yesterday in Red Bull's RB7, concentrating on longer runs, while Sebastien Buemi (1:21.681) returned to the Toro Rosso cockpit and was only slightly slower as he completed more than a race distance.

"The team has done a good job moving on with the development since I last drove the car in Valencia," Buemi said. "It's definitely better although at the moment there is no point in talking about its performance level, as we are still working on understanding the cars."

Heikki Kovalainen (1:21.711) was driving for Team Lotus, an exhaust problem not spoiling a positive day: "Today was very encouraging and I really enjoyed driving the car. My feeling is the same as at Valencia - it's a fundamentally good car and there's more to come from it."

Rubens Barrichello (1:22.227) found his Wlliams programme interrupted by more KERS problems which cost the team track time again, while Paul di Resta (1:22.945) and Jerome D'Ambrosio (1:25.471) put more mileage on the new Force India and Virgin chassis respectively.

Barrichello on top at Jerez test concludes

Rubens Barrichello (1:19.832) set the fastest time of the week as the second pre-season F1 test of 2011 drew to a close at Jerez. The Williams then caused one of the day's red flags when it stopped with a hydraulic leak.

"Nothing was going to stop us from doing over 100 laps today!" smiled technical director Sam Michael, acknowledging the lost running earlier in the week largely down to the KERS system. "Rubens was trying various things to learn about the Pirelli tyres - some worked, some didn't. Now we've also gathered some data on the Pirelli wet tyre after a small shower at the end of the session. At the next test we will also have KERS back on the car as we ran without it today."

Kamui Kobayashi (1:20.601) was second quickest but brought out a red flag when he put the Sauber C30 into the gravel in the morning and then had to stop early because of a power train related problem,

Fernando Alonso (1:21.074) finished up third fastest for Ferrari but concentrated largely on longer runs with heavier fuel loads and again ran more than 100 laps.

Sebastien Buemi (1:21.213) was fourth with the Toro Rosso and had his first taste of the super soft dry compound Pirelli and also the Italian company's intermediate rain tyre.

"I'm satisfied with the past two days, even if we know there is a long way to go in terms of developing the car," Buemi said. "Reliability improved throughout the test and since Valencia, so we must continue working in this direction while also beginning to think more about performance."

Bruno Senna (1:21.400) enjoyed his first experience of the Renault R31 with Eric Boullier stressing this was not a shoot-out with Nick Heidfeld, merely an opportunity to give the young Brazilian some mileage.

"It was an awesome day and I'm pleased with how things went," Senna said. "It was very much a learning day for me. I had never used the adjustable wing or the KERS before, so I had to adapt to these. It's not easy at first, because there is a big workload and you are operating two factors that change the balance of the car, but by the end of the day it became more like second nature. I started the day pretty relaxed; gradually built up my confidence, and then by lunchtime I was feeling pretty comfortable. I was looking forward to doing some hard laps at the end of the day but with the red flags and the weather, there wasn't enough time."

Heikki Kovalainen (1:21.632) got Mike Gascoyne's new Lotus T128 round just a couple of tenths slower, while Nico Rosberg (1:22.103) again suffered some mechanical interruptions to his Mercedes programme.

"The four days in Jerez have proved to be extremely useful although the test has not been without its challenges," Ross Brawn said. "We had good reliability for the middle two days which allowed us to accumulate a lot of mileage, however there are issues to be resolved so that we can maximise our track time for the remaining two tests. Both Michael and Nico continue to feel comfortable in the car and our priorities remain reliability, developing our understanding of the tyres and the KERS, whilst simultaneously pushing on with the developments still to come."

Sebastian Vettel (1:22.222) continued to put more miles on the consistent looking Red Bull but Jenson Button (1:22.278) was unable to find a suitable balance with the McLaren MP4-26 and the team's progress was brought to an early end in the middle of the afternoon following the failure of an internal component.

Jerome D'Ambrosio (1:22.935) stopped the Virgin on track in the morning with an oil feed problem and Paul di Resta (1:23.111) went off at the Dry Sack hairpin with just under half an hour remaining in the Force India, reporting a front suspension problem.

Renault signs Nick Heidfeld

After completing a successful test with Renault at Jerez, Renault has announced that Nick Heidfeld will join the team to replace the injured Robert Kubica.

Heidfeld will join the team at the end of the week at the test in Barcelona.

Nick Heidfeld said, "I would have liked to come back to Formula 1 in different circumstances, but I'm proud to have been given this chance. Everything has happened so quickly, but I've been very impressed by what I have seen so far in terms of the facilities and the dedication of the people at Enstone. I really enjoyed the test last week in Jerez and I've already settled in well with the guys at the track. I have a good feeling for the car, which is quite innovative. I'm extremely motivated and can't wait for the season to begin."

Team principal Eric Boullier said, "The team has been through a very difficult couple of weeks and we had to react quickly. We gave Nick a chance in Jerez last week and he really impressed us. He's quick, experienced and is very strong technically with his feedback and understanding of the car. We always said the priority was to have an experienced driver in the car and we feel he is the ideal man for the job. We are pleased to welcome Nick to the team and look forward to a strong start to the season with him and Vitaly in Bahrain."

Messi bags late winner as Argentina beats Portugal

Lionel Messi scored a last-minute penalty to give Argentina a dramatic 2-1 victory over Portugal while France maintained its renaissance under coach Laurent Blanc with a 1-0 win over five-time world champion Brazil on Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo looked to have earned Portugal a draw in Geneva with a 21st-minute equalizer but the Real Madrid forward was upstaged by his Barcelona rival, who converted from the spot with seconds remaining.

Karim Benzema was France's matchwinner in Paris, the Real Madrid striker scoring in the 54th minute after good build-up play by Jeremy Menez. Brazil was down to 10 men by that stage following the sending-off of Hernanes.

In other high-profile international friendlies, Manchester City winger David Silva scored an 86th-minute winner in Spain's 1-0 victory over Colombia to end the team's poor recent run of results, Italy drew 1-1 in Germany and England beat Denmark 2-1.

Messi and Ronaldo - who both play their club football in Spain and are arguably the world's leading two players - were always going to hog the limelight in the first match between Argentina and Portugal since 1972.

Messi had the last laugh, tucking away his penalty for his 16th international goal after Javier Pastore was adjudged to have been fouled.

Argentina went ahead in the 14th when Madrid winger Angel di Maria ran onto a pass by Messi to lift a finish over advancing goalkeeper Eduardo, but Ronaldo leveled by sliding home seven minutes later after Hugo Almeida had flicked the ball on.

The France-Brazil match at the Stade de France was a repeat of the 1998 World Cup final, which the French won 3-0, and the hosts deservedly got the better of their South American opponents again 11 years on.

France, which claimed a fifth straight win and built on the 2-1 away victory over England in November, made the most of the numerical advantage given to the team by Hernanes' red card, brandished to the midfielder for a dangerous tackle on Benzema.

The striker got back to his feet to lead the French charge, squandering a host of chances except for the one that brought France victory.

Menez went past two players and crossed the ball for Benzema to tap in for his 12th goal in 33 internationals.

Benzema also brought two great saves out of Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar while the visitors' best chance for an equalizer came when substitute Hulk saw a shot pushed away by home goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Spain was winless in its last three friendly games going into the international against Colombia, its most recent match being a 4-0 thrashing by Iberian neighbor Portugal.

The world and European champions struggled to keep up with the visitors at times at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium but snatched a morale-boosting victory when Silva turned in a cross right winger Jesus Navas.

Germany and Italy were playing in Dortmund, the venue of their last meeting when the Italians won 2-0 after extra time in the semifinal of the 2006 World Cup.

The Germans were heading toward avenging that loss when Miroslav Klose scored in the 17th minute, latching onto a cross by Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Mueller.

Giuseppe Rossi grabbed a draw for Italy in the 81st, however, when the Villarreal striker got away from Per Mertesacker and beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer at the second attempt.

Ashley Young came off the bench to grab England's 68th-minute winner in Copenhagen, becoming the second Aston Villa forward to score after Darren Bent had canceled out the opener netted by Denmark defender Daniel Agger in the eighth.

Wesley Sneijder, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Dirk Kuyt were the goalscorers for the Netherlands in a 3-1 victory over Austria while the night's most surprising result saw Luxembourg - ranked 131st in the world rankings - upset 20th-ranked Slovakia 2-1.

RI mountaineer reaches Aconcagua peak

Bandung, W.Java - A member of the Seven Summits Expedition Team Mahitala Unpar (ISSEMU), Janathan Ginting, has succeeded in reaching the Aconcagua Peak (6,962 maters) in Argentina, an ISSEMEU spokesperson , Widyastuti, said here Tuesday.

Janathan reached the highest peak in South America on Sunday (30 Jan) at 12.00 local time in his second attempt to conquer the mountain, Widyastuti said.

"Janathan reached the top so the whole ISSEMU team successfully completed the climb of the fifth highest mountain in the world," Widyastuti said.

Previously, the ISSEMU team consisting of Sofyan Arief Fasa, Broery Andrew, Frank and Max Agung managed to reach the same peak on January 9, 2011.

Janathan in his first ascent was held up at Plaza Argentina because of a health problem. The local doctors` team required Janathan to take a rest and therefore he did not participate in the climb with the team.

After taking a rest, he was eligible for the climb. Together with eight other climbers from Britain, Canada, the United States, India, Scotland as well as three guides from Peru and Argentina, Janathan finally reached the top where the Indonesian flag was raised by the first ISSEMEU team, Widyastuti said.

"At this time Jonathan is making his descent from the top and will immediately make preparations to return home," she added.

Previously, the ISSEMU team had successfully conquered the highest peak of Carteenz Pyramid (Indonesia), Kilimanjaro (Africa), Elbrus (Europe) and Vinson Massif (Antarctica).

While the other two highest peaks which will be climbed are the highest peak in Asia, namely Mount Everest(Nepal) and Denali (Alaska).

"The sixth climbg at the end of March 2011 will be on Mt Everest. Janathan will also participate, so that the team remains complete," Widyastuti said.

The ISSEMU team is the first from Indonesia to have scaled the Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica.(*)

ASEAN SG: 2030 World Cup bid is "herculean task"

Jakarta - ASEAN is exploring the possibility of entering the competition for one of its 10 member countries to host the FIFA World Cup, the world`s biggest football tournament, in 2030, according to the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat here Thursday.

"The 2030 World Cup Bid is a herculean task," said ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan as quoted on the ASEAN Secretariat`s official website.

Started out as an informal discussion by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers last July in Ha Noi, the proposal had recently garnered a higher level of interest, following last week`s ASEAN Foreign Ministers` Retreat in Lombok, during which the proposal became one of the highlights.

"I am very pleased with the unprecedented level of enthusiasm across the ASEAN region, particularly amongst our sport communities, about the decision to explore ASEAN`s bid to host the 2030 World Cup," said Dr Surin Pitsuwan.

"We are still at an early stage of consultations on strategic implications and a thorough procedural exploration," he continued, "but the advice and opinions that have been generated are most valued, and we expect the debate to continue and widen because we really learn a great deal from the public exchanges."

Malaysia has been tasked to prepare a proposal on the competition to be presented to the ASEAN Leaders at the 18th ASEAN Summit in May.

"The ASEAN Secretariat will work closely with Malaysia on this," said Dr Surin. "This will be a long and arduous campaign and we need to be comprehensive and strategic in our approach," he added.

"If ASEAN can work together on this ambitious undertaking, our international prestige and profile will certainly be enhanced, and the confidence in ASEAN will definitely be increased," said Dr Surin.

"The people will want to feel more ownership of ASEAN and to assume the ASEAN identity, and be willing to participate more in ASEAN Community building efforts."

Dr Surin added that ASEAN still has to work with existing mechanisms of FIFA. "The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) and the other sports authorities, the media, the civil society and, not least, the private sector, within ASEAN will certainly play an important role in this Herculean task," he continued.

"We want to turn all sports lovers in Southeast Asia into ASEAN enthusiasts," he concluded.

The World Cup is organised by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). Individually, all 10 ASEAN Member States are listed as FIFA`s member associations. The Cup is staged every four years.(*)

Spies pleased with Yamaha progress

As a pair of Repsol Hondas led the way in Malaysia on Wednesday, Ben Spies was best of the rest as his Yamaha climbed to third on the final Sepang timesheets. The American now heads into Thursday, the last day of the test, in positive mood.

“Today went really well,” he smiled. “We started out and got right up to speed. We worked pretty much just on electronics and also evaluated a couple of different engine configurations, both of which worked really well.

“The lap times were pretty similar, so we need to work out in which direction we want to go. We got a lot accomplished today and tomorrow we've got a couple more things on the engine to look at and we're going to try some tyres for Bridgestone.”

Hopkins rejoins Suzuki as reserve rider

John Hopkins will make his MotoGP comeback this year, as the American returns to Suzuki as a reserve rider after racing for the squad within the top echelon of motorcycle racing between 2003 and 2007. Despite not having a full-time ride, Hopkins will be on hand to replace Álvaro Bautista if an injury or unforeseen circumstance arises.

Hopkins competed in 114 races during his time in the sport, contesting five seasons for the Suzuki team. Despite not making the top step of the rostrum, the 27-year-old registered four podium finishes, all coming in the 2007 season. With Hopkins racing full-time in the upcoming British Superbike Championship, his new role is initially set to entail some on-track media work at the upcoming Qatar test.

"John won’t be doing the full test in Qatar, he will be doing some riding on the bike to help us out with some PR and filming work," Denning explained to MotoGP.com. "That will give him the opportunity to do some laps and get a feel for the bike, and he will be there at the test in case we need him. We’re not sure whether we’re going to need him during the test or not.

"With only one rider we’ve got to think carefully about a back-up plan, in case something goes wrong. We’re obviously very much hoping that we don’t have to call on it at any point, because we’re putting everything behind Álvaro and that’s the priority.

"But we have an obligation to Suzuki, to Rizla and to all the team’s partners to be at all the races so we do need to have a plan. John is available, he’s got experience and he’s fit and focused, and so he would seem to be the right man to do that job."

Denning added that Hopkins is unlikely to become Suzuki’s second rider in 2011 however, with no current plans for another bike to be prepared and raced by the outfit.

"There are no plans like that at the moment. Should something develop it could be considered, but at the moment it’s not in the plan," he summed up.

Schumi: Merc GP 'slightly concerned'

Schumacher was in action at the Spanish circuit on Friday and Saturday, finishing first and third. However, on both days his best times were one-offs as the German struggled to find a consistent pace with his new W02.

In fact, on Friday when he finished at the front of the pack, Schumacher's average lap time put him outside the top half of the field.

"Yes, we are slightly concerned but then on the other hand we know where we will and want to go to," the 42-year-old told the BBC.

"The first race will tell us truly what is the situation."

Mercedes have already made it clear that their target is to win the F1 World titles, however, Schumacher reckons that's going to be a difficult task this season, especially at the start.

"For the team it is very important to climb the ladder and have more success than last year.

"We are Mercedes and we have a very clear target. It is going to be difficult to meet this target straight away this year particularly after last year's experience.

"But it is a programme and a vision for more than just the short term."

One aspect that will have an impact on Mercedes GP's season are the new Pirelli tyres, which Schumacher says Merc still need to get a handle on.

"We have a character of car that we built up," he said, "but we have a new character of tyres and how much they will be in harmony is difficult to say at this moment in time.

"It seemed less important last year and is more important this year."

Interwetten Honda team to take one year out from MotoGP

The Interwetten Honda MotoGP team have revealed they will quit top-flight racing after this weekend's season finale in Valencia.

They will concentrate on Moto2 and 125cc racing next season in the hope of returning to MotoGP in 2012.

Rider Hiroshi Aoyama is expected to join the San Carlo Gresini Honda team.

"It is a pity that the team cannot continue. I had a really good time and I want to thank the team for all they did for me," said the Japanese rider.

Aoyama, the last champion of the old 250cc class, joined the Interwetten MotoGP team full of hope for his debut in the elite category.

But his season was rocked by a serious back injury suffered at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in June, and his best result was a seventh-placed finish in Malaysia last month.

With one race of the 2010 season remaining, he lies 15th out of 21 riders in the world championship, with a total of 51 points.

Fiat Yamaha appoint new team director after Rossi exit

Yamaha World Superbike team boss Massimo Meregalli will become director of their MotoGP team next season.

This season the team had two managers because of the garage being divided between former champion Valentino Rossi and new champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Seven-time champion Rossi will leave to join Ducati at the end of the season, taking with him the man who ran his part of the garage, Davide Brivio.

The final race of the season takes place in Valencia this Sunday.

Meregalli will start his new job after Sunday's race, with the first testing session for 2011 taking place in Valencia on Tuesday.

He will work with team manager Wilco Zeelenberg.

Genii Capital and Group Lotus form Lotus Renault GP Team

Written by David

Genii Capital and Group Lotus plc today announced the creation of Lotus Renault GP Team, the successor to the Renault F1 Team that will contest the 2011 FIA Formula One World Championship. This exciting announcement is made in the context of a strategic alliance between the two companies that will provide Group Lotus with significant technological and commercial opportunities for its range of road cars.

Following the return of the Lotus name to Formula 1 in 2010, under licence from Group Lotus, this historic announcement marks the complete return of the Lotus manufacturer to the sport, with the full backing of its parent company Proton. Group Lotus plc will become a major equity partner of Genii Capital in Lotus Renault GP, and the two parties have concluded a title sponsorship agreement that will run until the end of the 2017 season. With the continued support of Renault as a supplier of engines and technological and engineering expertise, Lotus Renault GP enjoys a strong, stable platform for future success.

“We are delighted that we can now go public with the news that we will be racing as Lotus Renault GP in 2011. It is extremely exciting to begin a new era for the team in partnership with Group Lotus, and we will continue to enjoy a strong relationship with Renault over the coming seasons. It is a tribute to the excellent work this year by the team in Enstone that we have been able to attract both major sponsorship and new investment for a very bright future,” said Gerard Lopez, Chairman of Renault F1 Team.

“I can think of no better platform for automotive brand communications than motorsport and F1 is the very pinnacle of open-wheel racing. We’re well aware that there has been a lot of controversy around the usage of our brand in F1 and I’m delighted to be able to formally clarify our position once and for all: we are Lotus and we are back,” added Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar.

The new partnership has been enabled by Renault selling its remaining shares in the team to Genii Capital. Group Lotus plc will subsequently become a major equity partner in Lotus Renault GP, which it will co-own with Genii Capital.

Renault will continue its strong support of the team with which it won the 2005 and 2006 world championships, as a supplier of engines and technological and engineering expertise. Reflecting this technological support, Lotus Renault GP will continue to compete with the Renault chassis name and Renault will enjoy pre-eminent brand exposure on the livery.

For 2011, the Lotus Renault GP cars will race in a new interpretation of the iconic black and gold colours that were last used when Lotus and Renault joined forces in the 1980s. This livery, which has been on the drawing board for over two months in order to reinterpret its iconic graphic signature to suit modern media requirements, is sure to strike a powerful chord with the sport’s enthusiasts around the world.

The team scored a strong fifth-place finish in the 2010 constructors’ championship, which included three podium finishes for Robert Kubica. Next season, Lotus Renault GP is aiming to take another step forward which will see it competing regularly with the most prestigious names in Formula 1.

Williams confirm Rubens Barrichello for 2011

Written by David

The Williams F1 team confirmed today that veteran F1 driver Rubens Barrichello will continue to drive for the team in 2011. The team’s second driver will be confirmed before the end of the year.

Barrichello enjoyed a successful first season with Williams, and his 18th in the sport. The Brazilian drove his FW32 into the qualifying top ten a total of 13 times and claimed 10 points scoring finishes over the year, all of which helped the team move forward to sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship at yesterday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Grove based team announced also that Nico Hulkenberg will not contest the 2011 FIA World Championship with AT&T Williams.

Hulkenberg joined the squad as a rookie at the start of the season, following a dominating career in Formula 3 and GP2 supported by Williams. Convincing performances in his debut year in Formula One culminated in 14th place in the Drivers’ Championship and an undoubtedly bright future in the sport. The team thanked Hulkenberg for his dedication and team work over the past year, and for delivering a memorable first pole position in five seasons for the team at the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix.

“First, I would like to thank Nico for his hard work this year, and before that in preparing himself for Formula One,” said Frank Williams upon the announcement. “We are very proud to have supported him as he secured the Formula 3 and GP2 titles and during his debut in Formula One. At Williams we have for many years tried to bring new talent into the sport, and we are convinced that Nico will go on to great things. We wish him well and hope that our paths will cross again in the future.”

“We recruited Rubens to Williams knowing that he would bring technical expertise, experience and passion,” continued Williams. “He has delivered everything we could have hoped for this season and we are delighted to confirm that he will drive for us again in 2011.”

Casey Stoner: Honda and Ducati difference is extreme

By Matthew Birt

Casey Stoner reckons it is impossible to make a direct comparison between the Ducati he rode last season and the factory Honda RC212V he will campaign in 2011 because the differences are so extreme.

Stoner switched to Repsol Honda on a two-year deal for next season having opted to end his four-year tenure at Ducati where he became the only rider to enjoy major success on the Desmosedici machine.

The Australian rider has won more races than any other rider so far in the 800cc era with 23 and his performances completely overshadowed Loris Capirossi, Marco Melandri and Nicky Hayden.

Stoner has already been installed as many people’s pre-season favourite for 2011 now he’s moved to the vastly-improved Honda RC212V, which dominated a three-day test session at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia earlier this month.

But the 24-year-old says it is difficult to compare the Ducati against the Honda when asked his thoughts on recent comments made by Valentino Rossi.

After Rossi’s much-hyped Ducati debut in Valencia back in early November, he said the GP11 felt like a pure prototype developed solely for racing in MotoGP.

But the Italian reckons the Japanese factories have a different approach and their bikes are essentially production bikes made into racers.

When asked about his move the opposite way from the Ducati to a Japanese bike, Stoner said: “I had a stronger feeling when I left Honda in 2006 to move to Ducati.

"Then it was ‘what have I done?’ I really didn’t know the decision I made when I first rode the Ducati was the right one. I couldn’t believe the feeling of the bike. You feel the vibration and the gear change is aggressive but the bike works.

"It was a very strange feeling but after four years you become very comfortable with the bike and it becomes normal.

"So when I got back on the Honda everything felt so smooth to me and it felt completely different. It is difficult to even compare the two because the difference is so extreme.”

Marco Simoncelli surprised to be fastest in Sepang

By Matthew Birt

Marco Simoncelli seemed as surprised as anyone to leave Kuala Lumpur with the fastest time at the end of this week's MotoGP test at the Sepang circuit.

Riding a full factory Honda RC212V machine, the Italian produced the first big shock of 2011 when a lap of 2.00.757 on the final morning secured him a morale-boosting place at the top of the timesheets.

He narrowly beat fellow factory Honda duo Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner as the new RC212V made a blistering start to 2011.

Four Hondas finished in the top five with only a flu-ridden Toni Elias blotting the Japanese factory's copybook as he finished last and way off the pace.

Simoncelli said his performance has come as something of a surprise but added his confidence had been boosted when he first rode the factory RC212V in Valencia back in early October.

The former 250GP world champion said: "I tested the new bike in Valencia for the first time and my feeling was good there. So through the winter I expected to be very fast, but maybe not the fastest. My best time on the first test last year was a 2.03.2. So I am 2.5s faster and no crashes. In the race last year I did a 2.02.8. From last year in the winter test the difference is generally me, the bike and the team and especially the experience we have got now. The bike for me is the package that has improved in every area and it is helping me the most. But the factory support from Honda is also very important."

BMW continue down under testing

After last week's test in Eastern Creek, BMW Motorrad factory riders Troy Corser and Leon Haslam travelled to Phillip Island to continue preparation for the 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship with two more test days. Weather conditions again were very hot, especially on the first day, with air temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius and track temperatures up to 55 degrees Celsius. On the second day it was cooler but still dry. The team completed a total of 1.090 testing kilometers.

Corser had a fall on the first of the two test days. He was not seriously injured but as he suffered some painful bruises, he and the team decided that he would not ride on the second day. With Leon the team went through an extensive testing programme and his results showed that everything is heading in the right direction.

"We were still focusing on electronics and worked on a setup for this race track," declared Haslam. "This was important as in three weeks time we are going to have our first races of the season here. We have already found a good base to work on. I am happy; we made some good progress. My lap times were quite good for these hot conditions. Of course we still have some work to do before the season starts but I am happy with the progress we made so far. The bike improved a lot in the last month. I am now travelling to Brisbane with my wife and my trainer. We are going to spend two weeks training there before flying back to Phillip Island for the official test and the season opener. I am already looking forward to race again at last. We now don't have long to wait until we will find out where everybody stands."

Supersonic launches new rider and livery

The Supersonic Racing Team, which will field Maxime Berger in the 2011 Superbike World Championship, had its official launch recently at the Bodadilla Club, Dalmine in Italy.

The evening was attended by a large number of members of the public, including famous personalities from the world of sports and entertainment. The attention at the evening was focused on Danilo Soncini, founder and owner of the team and the new rider for 2011, Maxime Berger. Soncini started with a brief history of his team, and explained after the reasons that led to choice Maxime Berger: "He is an experienced and young rider, young just like the team."

Berger thanked Danilo Soncini for fulfilling his dream to race in the Superbike World Championship. "It will be soon my first World Superbike race," said Maxime, "it is our goal to always get some points in the top ten, but I have to learn many things to exploit the full potential of my Ducati."

Then, Berger and Soncini removed the covers from the machine and showed the new livery in red, black and white colours, with the grey fuel tank.

Checa tops latest session at rainy Portimao

Carlos Checa has topped the third World Superbike test session of the week at Portimao, though only eight competitors would make it out onto the wet track.

With the Superbikes first on track today [Thursday], not a single rider would venture onto the circuit until Eugene Laverty made a tentative first outing once an hour on the timing screens had passed.

The Irishman would prove the busiest rider of the session by completing 20 laps, though it would be Checa who would come out fastest with a 1min 56.162secs – almost 13secs slower than was achieved in the dry yesterday. Laverty was second quickest, a further two seconds down.

A flurry of activity in the final half hour brought a total of eight riders onto the circuit, with Noriyuki Haga proving third fastest, ahead of BMW Italia duo Ayrton Badovini and James Toseland.

Michel Fabrizio, Marco Melandri and Maxime Berger were the only other participants, as Aprilia, Kawasaki, Effenbert Ducati and Castrol Honda all deciding to stay dry in the pit garage.

Xaus keeps Castrol Honda in charge

Ruben Xaus kept Castrol Honda at the top of the World Superbike timesheets during the fifth of six test sessions at Portimao, though poor weather conditions continued to hamper proceedings.

Following rain earlier in the morning, chilly temperatures prevented the circuit from drying effectively, with a short period towards the end of the session proving the only realistic opportunity to set a representative lap time.

Only Xaus and Michel Fabrizio took the chance, Xaus slashing seconds off a previous best set by Sylvain Guintoli to come out with a 1min 47.065secs. Fabrizio was a second further back on his Suzuki, but then six seconds ahead of Marco Melandri – who ventured out for just two laps right at the end of the session – in third.

Guintoli was fourth fastest, ahead of Ducati counterpart Carlos Checa, while Tom Sykes and Joan Lascorz put in some useful laps for Kawasaki in sixth and seventh.

All but Eugene Laverty and Max Biaggi made it out onto the circuit, though most for only for a brief time, with Jonathan Rea, Noriyuki Haga and Ayrton Badovini completing the top ten.

With just a single day of dry mileage under their belts, the riders now have just one more session to come this afternoon.

Prince Haya Re-Eelcted to FEI Presidency

Taipei , November 05 (QNA) - Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was re-elected on Friday as President of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the international governing body of equestrian sports. In a strong show of confidence in her leadership, Princess Haya defeated two other candidates, Sven Holmberg (Sweden) and Henk Rottinghuis (Netherlands), to win a second four-year term in voting at the FEI General Assembly in Chinese Taipei. In a vote of 124 National Federations (out of 133 who were eligible), Princess Haya won the support of 90 National Federations from around the world, compared to 23 for Holmberg and 11 for Rottinghuis. Princess Haya announced Her decision to seek a second term in March after several FEI nation groups and Federations urged her to do so. Princess Haya was first elected as President of the FEI in May 2006, on a commitment to modernize the organization. She was the first FEI President to win a contested election. More than 80% of the deliverables outlined in her original manifesto were implemented in her first term, including significant improvements in communications, marketing, animal welfare, FEI finances, grassroots development and liaison with national federations. In her first act in office, She initiated a reform that established a two-term of four-year limit for the Presidency. "Thank you so much for your confidence and trust. I promise that I won’t let you down", an emotional Princess Haya commented. "I promise to unify this Federation. I promise to work for you, the National Federations, and constantly appreciate your needs and do everything I can to serve this sport we all love. Thank you very much." Looking ahead, in addition to plans to build on and consolidate Her first term accomplishments, Princess Haya has presented numerous new ideas among Her second-term pledges in Her Programme, which was published on the October 23, 2010. Her vision for the future of the sport entails the development of equestrian sport in unison with the National Federations and Athletes, while respecting good governance and strong values that celebrate the horse and horsemanship. The daughter of the late King Hussein of Jordan, Princess Haya has been riding internationally since the age of 13 and competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. She became a member of the International Olympic Committee in 2007 and also serves as a UN Messenger of Peace, with a focus on combating hunger and poverty. Sharing Her love of horses and horse sport is Her husband, Sheikh Mohamed, who successfully led the UAE endurance riders to take the team gold medal at the FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky, USA last September.(QNA)

Rossi to join the Vallelunga 6 Hour race in Italy

Multiple MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi will be joining the Vallelunga 6 Hour race in Italy this weekend as the Yamaha rider gets behind the wheel of a GT3-class Ferrari 430, complete with his legendary number 46.

Italian Rossi, who picked up his seventh top flight MotoGP crown in Malaysia this year, is preparing for the race at the more local circuit - located around 50 minutes outside of capital city Rome by car - after being handed the opportunity by Kessel Motorsport.

As well as Valentino, taking turns in the cockpit will be best friend Alessio 'Uccio' Salucci and expert driver Andrea Ceccato to help make up any lost time.

After testing the car for 20 laps on Wednesday (Nov 18) this week, Rossi's hopes have been boosted by Luca di Montezemolo. "He's very motivated," the Ferrari President told Gazetta dello Sport. "I hope he wins because I want a Ferrari to win - and particularly one driven by him."

Joining 'The Doctor' on-track will be England's Adrian Newey, as the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 designer drives a BMW M3 in the Super Cup class.

Stoner, Pedrosa and Dovizioso off to a strong start at Sepang

Repsol Honda riders Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso started an intensive Testing schedule on the first of three days at Sepang on Tuesday, dividing out the Japanese factory’s planned workload and completing a highly satisfactory opening session.

Dovizioso started the day riding his RC212V with a 2011 front fork and also tried the new version of the bike’s chassis for the first time. Stoner and Pedrosa kept the 2010 suspension as the Australian set the best time of the day with a 2’01.574, whilst his Spanish team-mate enjoyed a positive feeling as he tested out his recovering collarbone.

”It’s been a very positive day,” said Stoner. “We didn't change the set-up too much compared to the one we had in Valencia and I am pleased to see that even if the circuit is different, it still works pretty well here in Sepang. We did some work later on with the engine braking to decrease some chattering and looks like we found a good solution. In the next two days we will start testing something new but for me, it was a very good way to come back on track after the winter break.”

Likewise Pedrosa was also very satisfied after the opening day, and said: "My priority was to see how I was on the bike after so long without riding and the feeling has been positive. Obviously I still have less strength under braking and lack of stability in the shoulder with the direction changes, but the cramps have gone and this is very positive for me. I started with the 2010 bike to get the feeling back and because in the second half of the season our bike was competitive, and we want to begin improving from there. Then I tried a new swingarm and a new chassis, in the last two runs, and my best lap time has been with the new parts, so it's also positive. The plan for tomorrow (Wednesday) is to test the new engine."

For Dovizioso the biggest highlight of the day was how well all three riders eased back into being comfortable and quick after more than two months off.

"I’m happy because this year we are starting from a very good base. All Honda riders are very competitive so I’m confident and this is an extra boost for me,” he said. “Today we tested the new engine, it has more power in the low revs and this helps me with the line. We also tested the new chassis and it has some positive and negative points and we need to understand it better. We did a comparison work with the 2010 and 2011 fork, the stability in the front has improved but we must rectify some vibrations in the middle of the corner, together with work on the suspension. I lapped at two-tenths from the first riders when they were using the same tyre, choosing not to use the soft tyre in the end because we focused on understanding the new machine."
