A February catch-up with Dani Pedrosa

In terms of mileage, Pedrosa ended the three-day test second only to Suzuki Test Team’s Randy de Puniet, whilst the Repsol Honda Team rider focused on ironing out his weaker areas. In-turn, this followed an energetic off-season for the 28-year-old.

How was your winter?
Good, good. It has given me time to unwind. I was able to rest and have some fun. This winter I have been windsurfing, which is one of my favourite hobbies. I was relaxed for a while, I had a change of scenery and then started fitness training.

How is your fitness after two months off and then three intense days of testing?
Well, that went well. Logically I'm tired because I've ridden many laps and it was very hot, but overall I'm very happy with my fitness. Now that we begin to get more time on the bike, we will go better.

Have you been able to improve something that you were not satisfied with over the past year, which was your grip exiting corners?
Yes, last year I lacked grip on the rear and suffered a lot because of this. I improved other aspects to try to compensate for that. We always suffer the most when it comes to getting traction out of the corners and everything we improve with that will be positive. It's something we've worked on at this test and we have made progress.

How can you improve your riding? What did you learn in 2013?
The races in 2013 were much more intense. There was always a lot of intensity in MotoGP™ with Casey (Stoner) and Jorge (Lorenzo), but in 2013 we were almost always close together until the last lap. There were many more races in which two or three riders finished together. In these situations it is important to stay focused and to be precise, despite your tiredness or the fact that the bike is not performing at 100%.

What is your assessment of the opening three days of testing?
I was able to progress quite a lot. Over the first two days I did not start with the best feeling, but we have improved. As I said, we have slightly increased the rear grip, but I have also made good progress ˗ especially with my feel of the bike.

Do you like how the new tyres work?
We have to see how they respond at other circuits, but the truth is that both the soft and hard can be used now, whereas last season you could only use the soft compound. The previous hard tyre had no grip, so in this sense things have also gone well.

At the next test will a race simulation be your main priority?
No, not the priority. Clearly it will be one of the important things, but not the most important. (On Thursday) we did a lot of laps with worn tyres ˗ 60 laps with only two ˗ so we have experience with used tyres now. At the next test I want to prepare the bike as well as we can before heading to (the following test at) Phillip Island.

What will you change when you come back here to Sepang?
Right now there are not many things. We have a good feeling, so we have to keep working and see if we can finish the second test well, to then go to Phillip Island happy.

Gresini's Antonio Jimenez on new 2014 tyres

Bautista may have ended proceedings 11th on the timesheet, but rapid lap times were not everything as numerous experiments went on behind the scenes.

"On the first day of testing, after becoming acquainted with the new RC213V, we started working on Showa suspension's setup starting from the good base reached at the end of last season," Jimenez begins to explain.

"On the second day, the situation became more complicated because we started using the new Bridgestone rear tyre for the 2014 season; that is actually quite different from the tyres used throughout 2013. The new tyre has a more rigid structure, designed to withstand the severe strain of a MotoGP™ and also amid high temperatures.

"Unfortunately, in this first test of the year we had - as all other riders had - only three new rear tyres available. We had to start from scratch in finding the best setting to exploit the potential of these tyres and for us this important work requires a certain time, because - being the only ones to use Showa suspension - we can’t count on other references. However, in the next scheduled test we will use only 2014 spec tyres, so we will focus on this aspect and I am convinced that we can do a good job."

Last year, a podium finish eluded Bautista, who the season before had managed to finish on the rostrum in both the San Marino and Japanese Grands Prix. However, Jimenez is confident that his rider can enjoy a positive upcoming campaign.

"We have seen very good lap times, obtained in the morning when the track was in the best condition," the Crew Chief continues. "In this case we have not been really fast, but we are satisfied.

"Alvaro has been fast with used tyres and this is important for the race distance. Obviously we need to improve for qualifying, but we have time to do it."

Once again this year, Fausto Gresini’s team is running a split programme. With Bautista riding a Factory Option Honda RC213V, new team-mate Scott Redding is piloting a Honda RCV1000R under the new Open regulations.

Edwards and Herrin preview 2014 with COTA

Edwards and Herrin are two of only three U.S. riders competing in the World Championship this year - the other being Nicky Hayden. The colder than normal temperatures and bone-chilling wind kept Edwards from doing some scheduled COTA track laps.

But the intrepid Herrin, a 23-year-old Californian who now calls Georgia home, braved the cold and took a street bike out for several trips around COTA’s 3.4-mile racing circuit, in between bouts of strong winds that pummeled the track all day.

Colin Edwards, Team NGM Mobile Forward Racing

On expectations for the 2014 season: “We’re on Yamahas (engines) so it’s got to be better. Obviously we have a good package this year. I’ve tested a couple times. I’m headed on a plane in about a week to go to Malaysia to do our first test and I’m looking forward to it. We’ve got a couple things in the works, chassis-wise, and we’re building and it should be better absolutely.”

What it was like to race in his home state of Texas last year at COTA: “It was awesome. I think it’s the first track I’ve driven to in, I don’t know, 25 years… since I started racing. Just the atmosphere was… the only thing I can compare it to was when we went to Shanghai, China, and raced in there in 2007 or 2006. You drove up, and it was phenomenal how big the facility was. And I think that was my first real taste of seeing what can be built for a race track. And here was the exactly same way. This is in my backyard. So it’s a pleasure to come here and race because they’ve done a fantastic job of building this facility.”

On establishing the Texas Tornado Boot Camp riding school: “We built a hotel, covered a football field more or less. We’ve got three or four tracks on the property. Once you arrive nobody ever leaves. We ride motorcycles all throughout the day, shoot guns after lunch, and when the motorcycling stops, we have a few beers around the fire and tell horror stories. People seem to enjoy that a lot.”

Josh Herrin, Team Caterham Moto Racing

On his first impressions of COTA: “I didn’t have the opportunity to go to the Grand Prix last year or Formula 1 race and immediately when I pulled down the driveway I was like, this place is sick! It’s so much different than what I’ve seen as far as race tracks go. The coolest thing is that it’s in the U.S.; you don’t see stuff like that in the U.S. very often just because racing in general isn’t a big thing in the States compared to Europe. My expectations were blown away. I didn’t think it would be this nice. It was fun on the track. The design is really nice.”

On how valuable the COTA track session was for him: “It will make it so much better. Even though we didn’t get a lot of laps today having track time on a new track is so helpful. When I went to Jerez for the first time, I played a million laps on video games. I watched all of the on board footage. Even then it’s so different learning the track.”

On the challenge ahead of him this year in Moto2™: “Anyone that races AMA, it’s a dream come true to race on the world stage—any sport that you do really. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and to be the only American doing it, is really cool for me to represent my country. If anything there’s more pressure. With Nicky and Colin racing in the MotoGP class, you know they’re going to do well. Me being the new guy and the only American in Moto2™, they are going to expect me to do well.”

Doctors give no prognosis for Michael Schumacher

Doctors offered a grim assessment of Michael Schumacher's head injuries Monday, providing no prognosis for the Formula One driving great after his skiing accident in the French Alps.

Schumacher has been placed in a medically induced coma to relieve pressure on his brain, which suffered bruising and bleeding when the retired seven-time world champion fell and struck a rock Sunday while skiing during a family vacation.

"We cannot predict the future for Michael Schumacher," Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, the doctor in charge of Grenoble University Hospital's intensive care unit, said at a news conference.

"He is in a critical state in terms of cerebral resuscitation," said Payen, the chief anesthesiologist treating the 44-year-old German driver. "We are working hour by hour."

Schumacher's wife, Corinna, daughter Gina Maria and son Mick were at his bedside.

"The family is not doing very well, obviously. They are shocked," his manager, Sabine Kehm, told reporters.

Schumacher earned universal admiration for his uncommon driving talent, which led to a record 91 race wins. His single-minded dedication to victory sometimes meant he was denied the same affection during his career that he received Monday.

Schumacher "gave the image of someone indestructible, powerful," France's four-time F1 champion Alain Prost said on iTele TV channel. "It's a banal accident compared to what he's done in the past . It's just a dumb thing that ended badly."

Schumacher and his 14-year-old son were skiing Sunday morning in the French Alpine resort of Meribel, where the family has a chalet. He fell and hit the right side of his head on a rock.

By wearing a helmet, Schumacher had given himself a chance of survival, Payen said, though the protection was not enough to prevent serious injury.

Gerard Saillant, a trauma surgeon who operated on Schumacher when he broke his leg in a 1999 race crash, was at the hospital as a visitor. He told reporters that Schumacher's age and fitness should work in his favor.

Schumacher, who turns 45 on Friday, retired from the track for the second time only last year, after a three-season comeback.

Still, the hospital's neurology team, which is recognized as among the best in France, was cautious about Schumacher's prospects.

Doctors lowered his body temperature to between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius (93.2 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit) as part of the coma, which essentially rests the brain, slowing its metabolism to help reduce inflammation after an injury.

The hospital, in a city that is the gateway to the French Alps, sees a large number of skiing accidents every year.

Schumacher has been seriously hurt before. In addition to the broken leg in a crash at the 1999 British Grand Prix, he also suffered neck and spine injuries after a motorcycle accident in 2009 in Spain.

An expert skier, Schumacher fell in a section of trails that slice down through a vast and, in parts, very steep snowfield. Although challenging, the snowfield is not extreme skiing. The runs are broad and neatly tended, and the ungroomed area in between — where the resort said Schumacher was found — is free of trees.

"He was in the deep snow. But it was not an off-piste track," Kehm said, suggesting Schumacher had not taken undue risks. "They were skiing on pistes, but in the moment that it (the accident) happened, it was not on the piste."

Meribel resort officials said Schumacher was conscious when first responders arrived, although agitated and in shock.

After the fall, Payen said Monday, Schumacher was not in a "normal state of consciousness." He did not respond to questions, and his limbs appeared to move involuntarily, the doctor said.

He was airlifted to a local hospital and then later brought to Grenoble. Doctors said that stopover was typical and did not affect his condition.

The French prosecutor in Albertville has opened an investigation into the accident, according to the Mountain Gendarmerie in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The goal is to determine the circumstances and cause of the accident.

Formula One drivers and fans rushed to wish Schumacher a quick recovery.

"Like millions of Germans, the chancellor and members of the government were extremely dismayed when they heard about Michael Schumacher's serious skiing accident," German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said in Berlin.

Sebastian Vettel, the Formula One racer for whom Schumacher was a boyhood idol, told German news agency dpa: "I am shocked and hope that he will get better as soon as possible."

Ferrari, which Schumacher raced for, also expressed its concern. Company President Luca di Montezemolo and race team leader Stefano Domenicali were in contact with the family, the company said in a statement.

Former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, who himself recovered from life-threatening head injuries at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009, wrote on Instagram: "I am praying for you my brother!! I hope you have a quick recovery!! God bless you, Michael."

British former F1 champion Jenson Button posted that "Michael more than anyone has the strength to pull through this."

Some fans gathered outside the hospital Monday.

Nuravil Raimbekov, a student from Kyrgyzstan who is studying in Grenoble, said Schumacher has been an inspiration to him.

"I'm worried, of course ... But I still hope, and I will pray for him," he said.

During his career, Schumacher set an array of Formula One records. After initial success with the Benetton team, winning his first two championships in 1994 and 1995, Schumacher moved to Ferrari.

There, he helped turn the storied Italian team into the sport's dominant force. After initially retiring in 2006, he made a comeback in 2010 and raced for three years with Mercedes.
