Nicky Hayden at Ducati for next two years

Nicky Hayden has agreed a new two-year contract with Ducati, which means the American will continue to ride a factory Desmosedici in the last year of 800cc racing (2011) and first year of the new 1000cc rules (2012).

Hayden will team-up with seven time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi, who leaves Yamaha at the end of this season to replace Casey Stoner. Rossi also has a two-year contract.

Hayden and Rossi were team-mates in 2003 at Repsol Honda, during Hayden's first MotoGP season.

The #69 has been far more competitive during his second year at Ducati, scoring more than twice as many points compared with this time last year, and inflicting two rare team-mate defeats on Stoner, on his way to sixth in the world championship after ten rounds.

Hayden is yet to better fourth place in 2010 - which he has achieved four times - but has claimed his first ever Ducati front row start for Sunday's Indianapolis round.

"I am very proud to be signing for Ducati again," Hayden stated. "Last year I felt like I rode for Ducati but now I really feel as if I am a Ducati rider. The team, sponsors and Ducati fans have really taken me in and supported me a lot and I really hope to pay them back with the results they deserve.

"Next year I'll be teamed with some guy named Rossi who knows a little something about bikes! We're going to have a strong squad - I won't predict results but I have no doubt this team will have some real passion, real worth ethic and a lot of fun. It is the start of a new era at Ducati and it is an honour for me to be a part of it," added the 2006 world champion.

Ducati Corse Director Filippo Preziosi highlighted Hayden's never-give-up attitude and attention to detail as his greatest qualities and he expects the American to continue to improve over the next two years.

“We are really pleased that Nicky will be staying with us for the next two years. It is no secret that he is a rider who never gives up, his whole racing history shows it. As a person his tenacity is an example for us all because he shows us that nothing is impossible if you truly believe. His progress since arriving at Ducati has been impressive and I am sure this trend will continue in the future.

"Nicky is also a special rider because of his attention to every detail and for him having Valentino as his team-mate means a huge contribution towards the development of an even more competitive motorcycle. I think it is these characteristics that have won the hearts of all the Ducatisti and that is the reason why a Ducati is the bike for him right now.”

Dani Pedrosa wins, Ben Spies second at Indy

For the first time since joining MotoGP in 2006, Dani Pedrosa has won more than two races in a single season after taking his third win of the year at Indianapolis on Sunday.

The Repsol Honda rider worked his way up from fourth on lap one and took the lead by accelerating past home hero - and pole sitter - Ben Spies on the main straight on lap 7 of 28, then rode to a comfortable 3.575sec victory.

After being overtaken, star rookie Spies held his own in second place for the rest of the race, marking his best ever grand prix finish and second podium of the year, after a third at Silverstone.

The final podium position went to MotoGP title leader Jorge Lorenzo, who suffered his worst finish of the season, but at least kept his perfect 2010 podium record intact.

Lorenzo crossed the line 3.237sec from 2011 team-mate Spies and 5.821sec in front of present Fiat Yamaha colleague Valentino Rossi.

Lorenzo will take a reduced 68-point lead over nearest title rival Pedrosa into next weekend's Misano round.

World champion Valentino Rossi, who had fallen three times this weekend and qualified just seventh, rebuilt his confidence in the race and got stronger as the race went on – rising from sixth at the end of lap one to take fourth place, from Pedrosa's team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, on lap 21.

Nicky Hayden, who claimed his first Ducati front row with third in qualifying, saw his hopes of a strong result damaged when a knee slider came loose early in the race.

Third at the end of lap one, Hayden dropped back to seventh by lap 6, but moved up a place when team-mate Casey Stoner lost the front of his factory Desmosedici and crashed out - while just behind Rossi - two laps later.

Rookie Marco Simoncelli was seventh at the end of lap one and retained that place at the chequered flag for San Carlo Honda Gresini, but team-mate Marco Melandri made an early exit from his 200th grand prix, crashing out on lap 3.

Alvaro Bautista put in a commendable ride in the tyre-melting temperatures to rise from 13th on lap one to eighth at the flag. Aleix Espargaro was the only Pramac rider to finish after team-mate Mika Kallio crashed out of ninth with eight laps to go.

The fourth rider not to reach the flag was Spies' Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Colin Edwards, who made two pits stops before retiring. The Texan seemed to suffer tyre problems.

Hiroshi Aoyama, making his MotoGP return from a fractured vertebra at Silverstone, finished in twelfth, with another recovering rider - Honda LCR's Randy de Puniet - 13th and last.

Indianapolis Grand Prix:

1. Pedrosa
2. Spies
3. Lorenzo
4. Rossi
5. Dovizioso
6. Hayden

Jakarta Teens Chase Badminton Dreams

By Ade Mardiyati

Lya Ersalita sits on the floor catching her breath in the corner of the badminton hall at the Rudy Hartono training center at the Ragunan sports complex in South Jakarta. The white T-shirt that wraps her small frame is soaked through with sweat after an energetic set.

The 13-year-old has been practicing since she was 5, her fondness for the sport growing as she watched other people play. Her idol is Mia Audina, an Olympic silver medalist for Indonesia in 1996 who then went on to represent the Netherlands after she married a Dutch national and moved there.

“I love Mia. She has excellent technique. She is just so great,” Lya said. “I want to be like her.”

Lya’s dream seems to be just around the corner as she has already won more than 100 local tournaments. At the age of 8, Lya joined Jaya Raya, a badminton club funded by the Jakarta government, and is now one of the club’s top players. The club welcomes all comers, but tends to attract serious students of the sport. Talented young players live in a dormitory and attend school at the center.

“I just love badminton and have never been bored with it,” Lya said.

Another ambitious young player at the club is 14-year-old Ade Maghfiroh Khasanah, who joined two years ago.

“My father plays badminton and when I was younger I used to watch him play, until I decided to give it a shot and fell in love with it,” she said.

Ade initially registered with the club along with her younger brother, though he later dropped out, switching from badminton to futsal (indoor football).

“I love badminton, and although the training sometimes tires and bores me, I don’t think I will ever leave it,” she said.

For many years, badminton, or bulutangkis — which literally translates as “feather backhand” — has been the most popular sport in Indonesia. Like football, it is seen as fun, relatively cheap and easy to play — an everyday sport for people living in the city or small towns and villages.

Whenever there is a large badminton tournament in town, the excitement is palpable. People, young and old, come out of their houses to smash the shuttlecock in the street. Others are more innovative, marking the road with chalk to create makeshift courts.

“It is the number one sport in Indonesia, and through this we have had world-class achievements,” said Imelda Wiguna, 59, a veteran badminton player and senior coach at Jaya Raya.

Imelda said her love affair with badminton began as a child, when she watched other people playing the sport in her hometown of Slawi, Central Java, after the 1958 Thomas Cup championship. The Thomas Cup is a biannual international tournament that Indonesia has enjoyed great success in over the years.

“Whenever there is a badminton event, people play it everywhere,” Imelda said. “People are moved by the spirit [of the game].”

Most regions in the country have their own local badminton clubs that provide playing courts and training. Jakarta’s Jaya Raya is open to anyone who is interested and registration is open all year round, Imelda said.

“The number [of members] has been stable over the years, but a lot more people usually register after events like the Thomas Cup,” Imelda said.

She said many of the younger members were pushed toward the club by their parents, often with visions of their children going on to become badminton champs, but that the more casual players tended to drop out over time.

“A great number of children register as beginners at the club, but the number usually drops to only 35 percent [of the original number] at the next level,” Imelda said.

“There are a number of reasons why they drop out. First, they get bored if it was not their goal to learn the techniques and they enrolled just to have fun. Second, they get bored after attempting other sports [which they decide they like better]. And last, they drop out as they reach puberty and they start dating and are no longer so focused on the training.”

Although the training center is funded by the Jakarta administration, players who are in the lower ranks have to pay a fee when enrollment outstrips the budget. There are currently 36 students at the center, of whom 20 are fully funded.

“It is good in a way that these kids have to compete to get into the top positions so they won’t have to pay,” Imelda said. “The atmosphere of competition is very strong here.”

Sitting on an old chair at the training center is 40-year-old Fiana. Sweat is rolling down her forehead, she is whispering a prayer and her fingers are spinning the straps of the bag on her lap.

“That’s my daughter playing,” she said, pointing to a teenage girl on one of the courts. “She’s taking a test today to join the training center here.”

Fiana’s daughter, Zahra, joined a badminton club in their hometown of Kuningan, West Java, when she was 10.

Fiana said she decided to enroll Zahra in the club because she was not doing well at school.

“She was an OK student but that was it,” she said. “And she was not really confident in herself, so I thought I had to do something. I didn’t want her to grow up with no self-confidence.”

After enrolling in the local badminton club, Zahra started to feel better about herself and made a lot of friends. In addition to gaining self-confidence, Zahra made such impressive progress on the court that Fiana wanted to give her daughter the opportunity to develop her skills further.

After her husband died, Fiana and her two daughters moved to Jakarta to give Zahra the opportunity to forge a career as a professional player. She joined Jaya Raya in 2009.

“Two days before my husband died, he called and asked Zahra what she wanted to focus on, and when she answered ‘badminton’, my husband said, ‘You be good at it.’ ”

Imelda said some parents sent their children to badminton clubs in the hope that their children would become professional players and earn money from tournaments.

“But I guess it is only natural and it is the same as other parents sending their children to school so that they will have a good future,” Imelda said.

Nugroho, 39, the father of Shinta, a player at Jaya Raya, said his daughter first asked him if she could join a badminton club in their hometown of Malang, East Java, in 2006.

“She read information about the club on a leaflet posted at her elementary school,” Nugroho said.

Two years later, Shinta moved to Jakarta’s Jaya Raya on the recommendation of her local coach, who said it would give her a better chance of becoming a professional player.

“I’m so happy that she enrolled in the club, my wife and I really support her,” Nugroho said. “If she is good, she can take part in tournaments. If she gets money [from winning tournaments], it’s a bonus. But it’s not the most important thing. To know that she loves and enjoys what she does is more important.”

When asked what their ultimate goal was, most young players at the training centre said the same thing: “I want to be a world champion!”

Taufik Dispatches Lee to Gain Spot in Semis

By Ami Afriatni

Taufik Hidayat has had such a stellar career that very rarely has he been forced to pull out victory as an overwhelming underdog. His quarterfinal match against world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei on Friday was one of those rare occasions.

Taufik, Indonesia’s top men’s singles shuttler and a former world champion, came away with a 21-15, 11-21, 21-12 victory over the Malaysian to advance to the semifinals at the World Badminton Championships in Paris.

Going into the match, Taufik’s head-to-head record against the top-ranked Lee was 9-5, and the fifth-seeded Indonesian built on that history of success as he dashed the Malaysian’s hopes.

In mixed doubles, there was no happy ending for Indonesia’s Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir.

The top-ranked pair in the world lost 21-19, 23-21 to Zheng Bo and Ma Jin of China, a defeat that not only ended the Indonesians’ run at the world championships but also nearly brought the curtain down on their storied partnership.

Nova and Liliyana entered the tournament hoping to complete a hat-trick of world titles following victories in 2005 and 2007.

But Nova had an off-day on Friday as he sprayed errors around the court at Pierre de Coubertin Stadium, helping the Chinese post a convincing win in 54 minutes.

“We had a chance to win the second game, but Nova’s mistakes were crucial. In the end, the Chinese were simply much better and stronger than us,” said the national mixed doubles coach, Richard Mainaky.

“Nova and Liliyana fought hard and they put a lot of effort into the match, but they just couldn’t convert that into a win.”

Zheng and Ma improved their head-to-head record against Nova and Liliyana to 3-0, as the eighth-seeded pair spoiled the Indonesians’ dreams of a perfect ending to their partnership.

Nova and Liliyana are due to split before the end of the season, and they were looking for a title in Paris to cap a stellar partnership that began in 2004.

The Indonesian pair has one more chance at a victorious send-off when they compete in the Asian Games in November.

“I hope they can do it there, I really do. We’ll train for the Asian Games as soon as we fly back home,” Richard said.

In other matches, defending mixed doubles champions Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark were also ousted in the quarterfinals, losing 21-19, 21-17 to No. 6 seeds He Hanbin and Yu Yang of China.

He and Yu will vie for a berth in the final when they battle Lee Sheng Mu and Chien Yu Chin of Taiwan.

Lee and Chien beat Tao Jiaming and Zhang Yawen of China 14-21, 21-18, 21-17 to advance.

In women’s singles, Tine Baun of Denmark clinched a spot in the semifinals after cruising to a 21-18, 21-13 victory over unseeded Cheng Shao Chieh of Taiwan.

Thousands of cyclists flood Denpasar

Denpasar, Bali - Thousands of cyclists flooded Denpasar on Sunday to mark the first anniversary of the Bicycle Joint Secretariat (Samas).

Among the cyclists were Denpasar Mayor I B Rai Mantra and Bangli District Head Made Gianyar.

The event was part of the activities to ensure the success of a car-free day campaign launched by the Denpasar mayor in 2009, Dewa Made Merthakota, chairman of the event`s organizing committee, said.

Dewa said he would never give up to encourage the public to lead a healthy and economic life through a car-free day program.

Themed cycling, green and unity program, the event was designed to campaign for the use of bicycles as one of the cheap and environmentally friendly transportation modes, he said.

What was more, the municipal government had provided special lanes on certain roads in the city to make the car-free day program a success, he said.

Dewa said at least 90 groups of cyclists were ready to join the secretariat, meaning that the public had high interests to have bicycles as cheap and environmentally friendly transportation means.

The international community were trying to deal with the impact of global warming by among others reducing carbon dioxide emissions, he said.

Therefore, cycling was one of the most profitable alternatives to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, he said. (S012/S026)

Kaiserslauters scrape past Osnabrueck in German Cup

Berlin - Bundesliga newcomers Kaiserslautern scored twice in extra time to win 3-2 and edge past second division VfL Osnabrueck in their German Cup first round tie on Friday.

Hosts Osnabrueck, who last season advanced as a third division team to the quarter-finals after eliminating Hamburg SV and Borussia Dortmund, took a 20th minute lead through Sebastian Tyrala`s thundering 25-metre drive.

Kaiserslautern were gifted an equaliser deep in stoppage time when Osnabrueck failed to clear the ball allowing Srdjan Lakic to volley home.

The visitors added two more through Austrian Erwin Hoffer in extra time before Bjoern Lindemann, who had missed a good chance in the 85th minute to seal Osnabrueck`s win, pulled one back five minutes before the end of the extra period.

The only other Bundesliga club in action on Friday, Eintracht Frankfurt, eased past SV Wilhelmshaven 4-0 while title holders Bayern Munich are in action on Monday taking on fifth division team Germania Windeck. (Uu.A008/F005/P003)

Will Tiger win 18 Major C’ships?

By Dale Dhillon

Tiger Woods has been focused on reaching and possibly breaching the 18 major championship win mark established by Jack Nicklaus since his first major championship win in 1997.

However, Woods has been stuck at 14 major wins since June 2008, when he miraculously hobbled around Torrey Pines, San Diego practically on one leg to win the US Open.

Immediately after that victory he was asked about being four wins away from the record when he said: “Well, only being four back, it’s hard to believe I’m in this situation, you know? It’s hard to believe I’ve had this nice a run in my career. And hopefully it will continue. I’m going to keep practicing, keep trying to grind and get better.”

That was then! He sat out the remaining two major championships of 2008 due to knee surgery and rehabilitation. He’s played in seven majors since and not tasted victory once.

In 2009 he suffered a stunning loss to unheralded Y.E. Yang after holding a two stroke lead going into the final round of the PGA Championship. This was a turning point in his historic domination of major championships.

Tiger appeared numb as he approached the scorer’s tent as his wife Elin and two children looked on. It was surreal to observe a relatively unknown player in Yang steal a major championship right from under Tiger’s nose.

He managed to close 2009 winning the PGA’s year long Fedex Cup along with a king’s ransom of US$10 million. This “king” would have gladly traded his $10 million for a major championship in 2009, a paltry sum compared to his $1 billion in record earnings.

The news that shook the golf world broke before his 35th birthday in December last year. It’s been a sordid saga not to be rehashed here.

Tiger’s doubters however are back in vogue. There are those who say that his multiple knee injuries, surgeries and other physical ailments will stifle his chances of making and breaking Jack’s mark.

Tiger approaches his 36th birthday in December and there is concern that few players have managed to win multiple majors beyond that age. There are some that question his desire to win. I do not believe there is a deficit in desire.

If anything, Tiger knows the best way to redeem himself is to win and there is no better remedy than winning a major championship.

He recently said at the US Open at Pebble Beach his game is coming together: “I feel like I put some pieces together this week. It’s a process. It’s a long process, but I’ve put some of it together, and I hit some shots this week that I haven’t hit in a long time.”

Heading into the British Open (where he finished 23rd) he was asked if after all he’s been through he would change anything in his approach to winning a major.

He said: “Yeah, nothing changes. I know what it takes to be ready, and I know what it takes to win major championships. Just need to get to that point and put it all together at the right time.”

There’s no doubt the roller coaster turmoil in his life has taken a toll on his game. At the AT&T National in Philadelphia recently he failed to break par in 3 consecutive rounds, something he had not done in 12 years.

Yes, the unexpected happens in golf even to Tiger Woods these days. Woods is looking for his elusive 15th major win and will have his final shot in 2010 at The PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin in mid-August. He finished 24th the last time the event was played there in 2004.

He may not win at Whistling Straits but his odds at tying Nicklaus’s record of 18 major wins are still good. He’s finished within striking distance in 4th place in two of the three majors he’s played so far in 2010 amidst all the fanfare.

We must not forget that he has won 14 of the 49 major championships he has played in, which is approximately 29 percent.

Time, however is not his ally. On the other hand he only needs to win ¼ of the 16 majors he plays before he turns 40.

If anyone can do it, it’s Tiger Woods but only if he can make golf his only professional pursuit. Nicklaus, the man that Tiger is pursuing has a different perspective.

When asked about Woods recently he said: “We have no idea what his neck issue is. We have no idea if his knee is bothering him. We have no idea whether he’s got his head screwed on properly because of his private affairs.”

Nicklaus anticipates however that Woods would pass his record if he is able to win at least one major this year. We should get that answer in three weeks.

Caddy sees no split with Tiger Woods

Steve Williams doesn't believe his job as Tiger Woods' caddie is under any threat, despite media speculation about their 11-year association and concern over the golfer's form.

Williams told New Zealand radio Wednesday that he and Woods remain close friends and there is no possibility their working relationship is about to end.

"I'm sure if there was going to be some sort of parting of the ways, I'd be the first to know," he said. "From my point of view, I don't see any chance of that happening."

Williams said Woods had no plans to change his key personnel, though he has struggled to regain form after taking a break from the PGA Tour amid revelations of marital infidelities.

"People speculate. He's not playing well and his results aren't what we're used to," Williams, of New Zealand, said. "Tiger and I are very good friends and we've been through a tough time. There's no question about that.

"I'm fully supportive of the guy and he's been great through this whole situation with me."

Woods consulted with swing coach Sean Foley at the PGA, but it's unclear whether he will work with him full time.

"He hasn't decided if that's the coach who's going to be with him, but I really like what this new guy had to say and what his theories are," Williams said. "If Tiger decides to stick with Sean, I believe he'll get better. It might take a little while."

Woods finished 28th at last week's PGA Championship in Wisconsin, a week after posting the worst 72-hole total of his career - 18 over par - at the Bridgestone Invitational event in Ohio.

Williams said nobody should rush to the conclusion Woods was losing his ability or his aura.

"At the end of the day, Tiger Woods is Tiger Woods," Williams said. "He's won 14 majors and 71 PGA Tour events. Regardless of what's gone on, you can't take that away from the guy.

"Tiger knows how to win and people know that he knows how to win. When he gets back in the situation where he's playing well again and he's in contention to win, he'll get the job done."

Williams said Woods remained hopeful of being selected by U.S. captain Corey Pavin for the Ryder Cup.

"It's one of the biggest events in the world and anybody that's played in it before always has the desire to play in it again," Williams said. "We've got a couple more weeks to show him (Pavin) that he's playing better."

Palermo keen on Ferdinand

One of the most surprising transfer stories of this summer could be Palermo’s move for Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand. The Italian side are looking to take the 25 year old on a season long loan in a deal.

The Black Cats boss Steve Bruce, hasn’t indicated to Online Betting pundits whether he would be willing to let Ferdinand leave the club but it looks probable. With Sunderland signing five new defenders this summer it looks as though Ferdinand’s time at the Stadium of Light could be over. It would appear that Titus Bramble, Nedum Onuoha, Ahmed Al-Muhammadi and Marcos Angeleri are all ahead in the pecking order of Ferdinand. Ghana captain John Mensah has also rejoined on another loan deal for this season adding to the numbers.

With so much competition for places at Sunderland, Ferdinand could find the option of a move to southern Italy to compete in Serie A betting as a very tempting one. The Italian club are understood to have enquired about the possibility of offering the former West Ham player the chance to spend a season in Serie A. The versatile defender is weighing up his options as he waits to hear what his manager decides to do.

Palermo surprised many last season by finishing fifth in Serie A, qualifying for the Europa League in the process. Delio Rossi’s team narrowly missed out on a Champions League place by just three points as he turned around the club’s fortunes after being hired near the end of last year. The club have strengthen this summer as they look to make the step up into genuine title challengers.

Fun-Loving Bubba Watson Gets Serious at Whistling Straits

Sheboygan, Wisconsin - While other players waited out the fog delay on the driving range or putting green, Bubba Watson played games on his phone and threw things at Rickie Fowler while his good friend was trying to sleep.

There are, Watson knows all too well, more important things to get worked up about than a round of golf.

The fun-loving Watson earned a share of the early lead with Francesco Molinari at the PGA Championship on Thursday, shooting a four-under 68. Jason Day of Australia turned in a 3-under 69, and sits one shot off the lead.

Afterward, he choked up talking about the difficult year his family has endured, with his father battling cancer and his wife having a scare of her own.

“It’s kind of emotional now,” he said, stopping several times to compose himself. “The first doctor told us the wrong diagnosis, but we didn’t know that at the time, so it was scary.”

It wasn’t all that long ago that Watson had a different outlook on life. A fan favorite for his booming tee shots and pink-shafted driver, he missed five straight cuts last summer, starting at the British Open.

Usually good-natured, he found himself getting angry every time he stepped on the course.

Finally, his longtime caddie — and good friend — Ted Scott pulled him aside. Watson needed to change his attitude. If not, Scott said, he could find a new caddie.

“When he sat there as a good friend of mine and told me that he was going to quit because of my attitude, you’ve got to change it,” Watson said.

Instead of getting worked up about his game, now Watson puts as big a premium on fun as he does on his driving and putting.

Since arriving at Whistling Straits on Sunday night, Watson and Fowler have been busy tossing the football around and playing basketball.

Of course, if any player could use some off-the-course levity these days, it’s Watson.

When he and his wife were visiting his father during Christmas, Angie Watson checked herself into a hospital with a severe headache.

“She’s a professional athlete who had surgery on knees, shoulder, everywhere possible,” Watson said of his wife, a former WNBA player.

“So when she wants to go to the hospital, I know something’s wrong.”

She wound up only being dehydrated. But doctors told the Watsons that, during the course of their tests, they’d found a tumor in Angie Watson’s pituitary gland.

“Two months went by and we did some more tests — man, this is hard,” Watson said, stopping to compose himself.

Later, doctors told them Angie Watson did not have cancer. Like many taller women, her pituitary gland was enlarged.

When Watson won in Hartford in June, the emotions of everything he’s gone through this last year spilled over.

“When I’ve been angry, my wife has yelled at me a few times and said, ‘Why are you angry? This is what you love to do,’ ” he said.

“When you’re home, when you’re not playing golf, you’re playing golf with all the boys back home. So you love to do this. So why not just go have fun and do it.’ ”

Dewi Safitri's Youth Olympic Bronze Medal Backs Big Talk

Jakarta - Dewi Safitri promised she would bring home an Independence Day gift for Indonesia from the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. And the 17-year-old weightlifter did more than just talk by snatching bronze in the girls’ 53-kilogram division on Monday, the first medal for Indonesia at the Games.

Dewi’s third-place podium effort was powered by a 71-kg snatch lift and then a 100-kg lift in the clean and jerk for a combined lift of 171kg.

Her Games performance went one kilogram better than her total at the 2009 Asian Youth Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she placed third and punched her ticket to the Youth Olympics.

“Before I left for Singapore I promised that I would get a medal as an Independence Day gift for the country. I did it,” Dewi told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday.

Bulgaria’s Boyanka Kostova won the gold with a total lift of 192kg, while silver went to Taiwan’s Kuo Hsing Chun with a 174-kg effort.

Despite the medal, Indonesia’s weightlifting coach, Sodikin, said his star lifter could have done better still.

“That’s not her best performance,” Sodikin said. “I think it was because she felt a bit more pressure as she was the country’s best hope for a medal.”

Sodikin said that last week Dewi lifted 182kg — 77kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk — in training before heading off to Singapore.

“But this is still a great achievement and I hope it motivates other young athletes, especially lifters, to excel on the world stage,” he said.

Indonesia’s other star lifter, 16-year-old Zainuddin, failed to follow in Dewi’s footsteps after the pride of the boys squad finished in fifth in the 62-kg division with a total lift of 239kg.

Kim Song-chol, from North Korea, won the gold with a 257-kg total lift, followed by Colombia’s Jose Mena (247kg) and Turkey’s Emre Buyukunlu (246kg).

Zainuddin made the team when he replaced another Indonesian lifter, 15-year-old Sumaryanto, who was younger than the Games’ minimum age requirement for lifters.

The country’s hope to get another medal from badminton was dashed on Tuesday as Evert Sukamta lost 21-11, 14-21, 21-13 to South Korean Kang Ji-wook in boys’ single last eight round.

Renna Suwarno failed to qualify for the girls’ singles quarterfinals after falling 21-12, 22-20 to China’s Deng Xuan in the final match of Group D, Monday.

It was Renna’s first defeat in group play. Deng, meanwhile, advances to the quarterfinals after leading the group with a perfect 3-0 record.

The country’s young cyclists also came up short in their bid to give Indonesia its second medal of the day.

Elga Kharisma Novanda finished 13th in a field of 26 riders in the junior women’s cross-country competition at Tampines Bike Park on Tuesday.

The result came as a disappointment to Elga, who finished second at the same venue in May, to gain a spot at the first-ever Games.

Elga finished the 15.5-km race in 55 minutes and 25 seconds — 8:27 behind the eventual champion, Karolina Kalasova of the Czech Republic.

Linda Indergand of Switzerland took the silver, while the bronze medal went to Canada’s Kristina Laforge.

Indonesia’s Destian Satria finished 28th in the junior men’s cross-country event.

Indonesia winless at Asia Cup qualification

Non-qualifier Indonesia finished its Asia Cup group stage without a win after losing its last match against Australia at Brisbane’s Suncorp stadium on Wednesday.

Needing only a draw to qualify for the finals in Qatar next year, Australia piled pressure on the Indonesian opposition from the start, but scored the only goal just three minutes before the half time. Mark Mulligan slammed home a rebound underneath Indonesian goalkeeper Markus Horison after his attempt to latch on to a free-kick hit the woodwork.

The victory gave Australia 11 points from six matches and handed Indonesia its third defeat. The other slot to the Cup finals will be decided in the other match now underway in Oman between the home side and Kuwait.

Indonesia had already crashed out of the continental soccer competition for the first time since 1996 following a 2-1 defeat to Oman at home on Jan. 6.

Netherlands, Spain fined for WCup final behavior

The Netherlands and Spain have been fined by FIFA for their players' poor discipline in a bad-tempered World Cup final.

FIFA said Tuesday the Dutch federation must pay 15,000 Swiss francs ($14,480; euro10,900) after eight different players received yellow cards, and defender John Heitinga was booked a second time and sent off.

English referee Howard Webb showed five yellow cards to Spain, getting its federation a 10,000 Swiss francs ($9,650; euro7,300) fine.

FIFA's disciplinary code has a clause on team misconduct calling for a federation to be fined when at least five of its players are sanctioned in a match.

Spain won 1-0 in the July 11 final, on Andres Iniesta's extra-time goal after the Netherlands were reduced to 10 players.

Community Negotiations Officer at Bridge International Academies

Bridge International Academies is a startup revolutionizing education across Africa with a truly unique business model. The company has launched a large-scale franchise-like network of ultra low-cost for-profit private primary schools across Africa. Our schools profitably deliver high-quality education for less than 300 Shillings per child per month, enabling local school managers to operate their school businesses profitably, while creating a highly successful business at the central level.

We have already launched the first 12 schools in our network in the slums of Nairobi with tremendous success, and plan to rapidly scale the company to serve more than 1 million families in Africa.

About this position
We are seeking a full-time Community Negotiation Officer, who will help support the land team in their push to find plots of land suitable for schools inside Nairobi’s informal settlements.

A central part of our operations includes the identification, verification, negotiation and purchase of plots of land for our schools inside the slums. These plots often have clouded title histories, but through our land identification and procurement process we must establish a certain amount of security -- understanding the previous ownership, other potential competing claims, titling possibility, issues with city council, lands office, etc. To make these determinations and the actual purchase, the process may involve negotiations with local village elders, local government administration, and local landlords, and ultimately a sales contract written with some or all of these participants.

Bridge International has developed extensive systems and tools for its land acquisition management that requires extensive community negotiations – both before, during and after purchasing a plot. The role will also include negotiating with Chiefs, Councillors and MPs, as well as maintaining a range of contacts at Nairobi City Council, Ministry of Lands, Survey Kenya and other organizations that can help provide Bridge International Academies with assurances that the land that we build schools on is suitable for development.

This position is also critical in providing feedback to the central headquarters as to ways to improve upon these systems.

The Community Negotiation Officer will focus on certain elements of the land acquisition and the community and administration negotiations processes.

These include:
Meeting and dealing with community members
Meeting and dealing with local Administration officials
Negotiating conflict surrounding land and land purchases, often including tribal issues
Holding community meetings and barazas, where you represent Bridge International Academies
Writing full briefing notes
Taking meeting minutes
Investigating conflicting land ownership claims
Establishing and utilizing contacts at local and central government to find clear information on land ownership
Being able to locate and explain plot positions on a variety of mapping interfaces
And more
This is a very hands-on job, with the Community Negotiation Officer in the field working with schools about 80% of the time.

About You
You are a very process or systems-oriented person.
You have experience in the field negotiating land conflict in informal settlements
Experience in working in very poor communities (slums) is a real plus
Experience in dealing with sensitive issues regarding land
You are not afraid of getting your hands dirty
ou have experience managing projects with many moving pieces, and working with teams of people
You function well in a fast-paced informal environment where constant change is the norm and the bar for quality is set high
You are comfortable with numbers and maps
Bachelors degree
Our team has a passionate belief that basic primary education is critical to the development of every child, family, community and nation. We believe that it is possible to address this critical need for poor families through new and innovative approaches leveraging the private sector, and that by providing low-cost but high-quality primary education, we will give millions of children the opportunity to accomplish their dreams. We are looking for someone who wants to join us in this rewarding task.

Requirements/Skills:
3-5 years experience in community negotiations or related experience
Fluent written and spoken Kiswahili and English, with at least two tribal languages
Driven, disciplined and self-motivated
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must be a team player and open to new approaches and ideas
Strong personality with proven negotiating skills
Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks
Good computer and web skills

Eager Dementieva ready for return from calf injury

Stanford, California - Elena Dementieva, who missed Wimbledon with an injury, returns to action as one of the top seeds at this week`s Bank of the West Classic where she will look to tune up her game ahead of the U.S. Open.

Dementieva, the second seed at this week`s tournament, has a first-round bye and will face the winner of the match between fellow Russian Dinara Safina and Japan`s Kimiko Date Krumm.

The 28-year-old Dementieva suffered a calf injury at the French Open that forced her to pull out of a semi-final match against eventual champion Francesca Schiavone and take four weeks off to recover.

Dementieva, who has yet to win a grand slam title, said she understands injuries are part of the game but could not follow a Wimbledon that she was not competing in.

"I didn`t watch because I was too disappointed I wasn`t there," she told reporters. "I didn`t want to know who won."

Despite playing a grinding schedule for the past 11 years, the 28-year-old Dementieva had not missed a grand slam she had qualified for until this year.

Considered by some the best women`s player not to have won a grand slam, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist said that despite her age she remains just as competitive as when she advanced to her first grand slam semi-final as a teenager in 2000.

"It`s never easy to lose," said Dementieva. "I love to play and win and it`s always disappointing to lose. Maybe I`m taking a little easier now, but it doesn`t mean that I don`t care."

Dementieva is hoping to regain her form in time for the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 30. She reached the U.S. Open final in 2004 but lost to compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova.

While the calf injury disrupted Dementieva`s rhythm, she believes that it also had a positive side.

"It was a good time to get a break and get ready for hard court season," she said. "In the end, I really needed some time off to get hungry for the competition." (Uu.F005/A020/P003)
