Jakarta - An action star from Hong Kong, Jackie Chan, was appointed as Indonesian Tourism Ambassador for the Chinese market.

Director of Tourism Promotion of Foreign from the Culture and Tourism Ministry Nia Niscaya said here on Tuesday that the Indonesian government would be officially appointing veteran actor Jackie Chan, born in Hong Kong, April 7, 1954, as Indonesian Tourism Ambassador immediately.

"The inauguration will be held on August 30, 2014, in China International Travelmart event in Guang Zho," said Nia.

On that occasion, Jackie who has appeared in 100 movies, will sing the song Bengawan Solo, which is popularly known to Chinese public.

The song Bengawan Solo, Chinese version, sung by Jackie Chan will be recorded and can be downloaded freely at the website cn.indonesia.travel.

Jackie who is also Cantopop and Mandopop singer will be in charge of promoting tourism in Indonesia as part of his activities.

The ministry chose the actor who had studied acting since the1970s, considering his action that is well-known even internationally.

"It will be very beneficial for Indonesia, and we hope to attract 1 million tourists from China this year," he noted.

Such promotion, said Nia, was effective because the Indonesian government did not need to spend any money as compensation to the designated ambassador.

However, its impact was relatively large when the ministry had appointed economist Philip Kotler as Indonesian Tourism Ambassador a few years ago.

Tom Cruise ends whirlwind visit to Taiwan

Taipei (ANTARA News/CNA) - Hollywood star Tom Cruise left Taiwan for the United States on Sunday (April 7) , ending his three-day whirlwind visit to the country to drum up interest in his new film.

Cruise left Taiwan on a personal plane after making appearances to promote his latest sci-fi action film "Oblivion," in which he plays a veteran in the future who will determine the fate of mankind.

During his stay, the actor visited a local restaurant to learn how to make its signature xiaolongbao, or small steamed buns, on Saturday and attended the premiere of his movie in Taipei that night, where he was greeted by some 2,000 passionate fans.

Local media and fans praised the movie star as "down-to-earth" and "sincere." Cruise spent more than two hours shaking the hands of fans and signing autographs on the red carpet before the premiere.

"I`m very excited to be here. I haven`t been here for many, many years, so it`s really nice to be here," Cruise told local TV channel Television Broadcasts Satellite (TVBS).

Taiwan was the only stop on Cruise`s film promotion tour in Asia. It was the 50-year-old actor`s third visit to Taiwan. His last visit was in 2001 to promote his sci-fi film "Vanilla Sky."

He is scheduled to attend a premiere in Los Angeles on April 10. (U.M016)

Jackie Chan leaves imprints in Hollywood for the second time

Los Angeles (ANTARA News/Reuters) - Chinese action film star Jackie Chan on Thursday became the first person to twice leave the imprints of his hands and feet in cement at Hollywood`s famed Chinese Theatre.

Chan, who has starred in some 150 films in a career spanning more than 40 years, first left imprints in the forecourt of the theater in 1997, adding to the collection that features screen legends from Clark Gable to Marilyn Monroe.

But over the years, as ownership of the theater changed hands, the cement slab featuring Chan`s prints was lost. Slabs are changed often to make room for new entries in the collection.

Representatives at the newly named TCL Chinese Theatre confirmed that Chan was the first two-time inductee. They said they did not know when the prints vanished but were sure that the slab was not stolen from the forecourt.

On Thursday Chan left imprints of his hands, feet and nose in cement, accompanied by his "Rush Hour" co-star Chris Tucker and "The Karate Kid" co-star Jaden Smith.

Chan, 59, told a crowd gathered for the occasion that he had always dreamed of having his prints in cement at the theater.

"My first time in the Chinese Theatre, I walked on the red carpet ... and I see that there are so many stars doing the interviews. And at that time I had nothing to do, standing there looking around," he said.

"During all those years I dreamed. Slowly, slowly, I got there," the actor said.

Chan has become one of China`s biggest film stars, crossing into Hollywood movies with his Kung Fu fighting skills and ability to do his own action stunts.

Last month at the Cannes film festival, Chan told Reuters that after countless broken bones and smashed teeth, he was giving up doing his own stunts but wanted to continue acting across different genres.(*)

Next from Stevie Wonder: a gospel tune in Arabic?

Los Angeles (ANTARA News/CNA/AFP) - Soul music legend Stevie Wonder says he`s toying with the idea of including a gospel song in Arabic on an upcoming album dedicated to his mother.

"Gospel Inspired by Lula" is among several projects that Wonder, 63, has going right now, he told Rolling Stone in an interview posted Tuesday on the pop culture magazine`s website.

"We`re going to do some traditional gospel stuff, but I`m thinking about doing a gospel song in Arabic," he revealed.

"I`m going to twist it all up in different ways, because I think everyone needs to hear the word of the gospel ... whether they read the Koran, the Torah or the Bible, whatever they read."

Wonder`s mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, the daughter of a poor Alabama sharecropper, was credited as a co-writer on several of Wonder`s songs including "I Was Made to Love Her" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I`m Yours".

She died in Los Angeles in May 2006 at the age of 76.

"I promised her I would do it," said Wonder, who hosted singer John Legend`s induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame on Saturday. "She always wanted me to do it before she passed away."

Wonder`s other projects include a collaboration with Canadian producer David Foster that will see him recording both old and new material with a symphony orchestra.

"All of these are coming out relatively soon," the entertainer said, "but I never put a time on things, because the most important thing is that it`s good."

Holmes (33) will portray the role of Lorna in the five-character play that tackles "issues of corporate greed, small town values and whether or not your family will always welcome you back ... with no questions asked," the statement said.

The play will be directed by Tony Award winner Jack O`Brien.

Holmes made her Broadway debut in the 2008 production of Arthur Miller`s "All My Sons." (C003)

Beyonce sings at United Nations

United Nations - Who runs the world? On Friday it was Beyonce; The U.S. pop star took to the stage in the U.N. General Assembly hall, normally reserved for world leaders, to film a music video that will be released on Aug. 19 to mark World Humanitarian Day.

Beyonce - whose hits include "Who Run the World (Girls)," "Single Ladies (Put a ring on it)" and "Crazy in Love" -- performed her 2011 song "I Was Here," a ballad written by Diane Warren about leaving your mark on the world.

"We all see the headlines and we think, what can I really do to help?" Beyonce said in a statement.

"World Humanitarian Day is an opportunity for all of us to work together to make a difference. This is our time to leave our mark on the world and show that we were here and we care," said the Grammy Award-winning singer.

The U.N. event was a rare performance by Beyonce since she and her hip-hop mogul husband Jay-Z welcomed their first child in January, daughter Ivy Blue.

Instead of ambassadors and world leaders, some seats in the U.N. General Assembly hall were filled by celebrities including actress Julia Stiles, model Alek Wek and rapper The Dream.

Beyonce met U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during rehearsal.

The music video, donated by Beyonce and Warren, will launch a global campaign that hopes to reach one billion people and encourage them to pledge online at www.whd-iwashere.org to do something good for someone in need.

Illustrations on Beyonce`s website, www.beyonce.com, suggested a few ways people can leave their mark -- draw a small animal and tell it all your secrets, make food and share it with others, and dance like children who don`t know the rules.

"I hope everyone will pledge to complete at least one humanitarian action - however great or small," said U.N. aid chief Valerie Amos in a statement.

"Together we can create an unprecedented awareness of the plight of people affected by crises around the world."

In 2008, the U.N. General Assembly declared Aug. 19 World Humanitarian Day to raise awareness of such work, recognize people who risk their lives to help those in need and mark the day in 2003 when 22 people who were killed in a bomb attack on U.N. offices in Baghdad. (U.C003)

Stevie Wonder to sing for Obama at la fundraiser

Los Angeles - Music legend Stevie Wonder will lead a star-studded cast singing for Barack Obama at a Los Angeles fundraiser next month, the Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday.

Katy Perry, Earth Wind & Fire, Jennifer Hudson and Jon Bon Jovi will also play at the Nokia Theatre on October 7, in a concert dubbed "30 Days to Victory" ahead of the November 6 election.

The concert is being put on by veteran Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich, along with Obama`s Entertainment Advisory Council. Tickets start at $44 and will be sold on the Obama campaign online.

Obama, bidding for re-election over Republican rival Mitt Romney, generally gets a warm welcome in Los Angeles and Hollywood, where members of the famously liberal entertainment industry mostly back Democrats.

After the October 7 show there will be a $25,000-a-plate fundraising dinner, co-hosted by DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg, at Oscars chef Wolfgang Puck`s WP24 restaurant, the Hollywood Reporter said. (Uu.H-AK)

Taiwanese teen romance wins HK Film Award

Taipei - Taiwanese box-office hit "You are the Apple of My Eye" won in a new category introduced this year at the 31st Hong Kong Film Awards, taking the title of "Best Film of Mainland (China) and Taiwan."

The low-budget film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by popular Taiwanese author Giddens Ko and is set in his hometown of Chanhua County in central Taiwan.

It beat four other Taiwanese and Chinese blockbusters -- The Flowers of War, If You Are the One 2, Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale and Starry Starry Night -- to win the newly introduced Best Film of Mainland and Taiwan award.

Lead actors Ko Chen-tung and Michelle Chen, along with the rest of the main cast, attended the glitzy award presentation ceremony at the harbor-front Hong Kong Cultural Center.

The film tells the story of five high school boys striving to win the heart of classmate Shen Chia-yi, played by Michelle Chen.

The retro coming-of-age drama emerged as an instant box-office success in Taiwan upon its release last year, appealing to audiences of all ages.

It was the third best-selling film in Taiwan`s history, with NT$460 million (about US$16 million) in ticket sales. It broke four box-office records on its opening days in Hong Kong and has since become the best-selling Mandarin film ever screened there.

The movie has also generated a buzz in the rest of the Chinese-speaking world, including several Southeast Asian countries.

Noted Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao, who rose to stardom through a TV reality show, won the award for best new performer for his role in "The Killer Who Never Kills", which is also based on a popular novel by Giddens Ko. (T.A045/H-AK)

"The Avengers" smashes opening weekend box office record

Los Angeles - "The Avengers" has scored the biggest opening weekend North America box office history with an astonishing 200.3 million US dollars in estimated ticket sales, marking a start of Hollywood's summer season.

The previous record was 169.2 million US dollars set by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" last year. Although "The Avengers" did not manage to break the opening day record by the Harry Potter finale, it finished strong to set the highest gross. It has earned an A-plus grade as measured by the Cinemascan service.

The Marvel Studios film, released by Walt Disney Co, is on track to have sold 641 million dollars in tickets across the world, according to studio estimates gathered by Hollywood.com.

Box office analyst for Hollywood.com Paul Dergerabedian said " This is the biggest North American opening weekend debut in box office history and sets a new benchmark in what is possible in terms of theatrical revenue generation."

The film, directed by Joss Whedon, brings together super heroes of several prior Marvel blockbusters, including Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and Thor. It has the star attractions, staring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Disney opened the film first in other countries, setting opening weekend records in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Philippines, building anticipation before it was released in North America.

Hit by the blockbuster, other films performed poorly at this weekend box office.

"Think Like A Man", which held the top spot over the past two weekends, was in second place with 8 million dollars and a three- week total of 73 million dollars.

And the previous big hit of the year, "The Hunger Games," was the third with 5.7 million dollars, bringing its domestic sales over seven weeks to 380.7 million dollars.

Rounding out the five top movies in the North America this weekend were "The Lucky One" (5.5 million dollars) and "Pirates, The Band Of Misfits" (5.4 million dollars). (A045/H-AK)

Pop Diva Goes Gaga for Thai ‘Ladies’

Bangkok. Lady Gaga met Thai ‘ladies’ of a different kind at a transvestite cabaret show in Bangkok that had the flamboyant entertainer singing along, club management said on Friday.

The ‘Born This Way’ star “clapped her hands and screamed” in appreciation of the performance at Calypso Cabaret, which included lip-synched versions of well-known Asian pop songs and dance routines by a troupe of extravagantly dressed ‘ladyboys.’

“When she arrived, she was so friendly, she said ‘Hi lady, hi lady’ to our performers all the way to her seat before the show started,” Nipon Boonmasuwaran, sales and marketing manager at Calypso Cabaret told AFP.

The 26-year-old singer, whose global hits include “Just Dance” and “Poker Face,” wore a crop top with gold-studded epaulettes for the event in central Bangkok on Wednesday.

“When the show finished, she went up to her favorite performer and said ‘you are so beautiful,’” Nipon said. “We’re so happy and impressed with her. She seemed very nice and not arrogant like other superstars.”

Gaga, who was due to perform in Bangkok on Friday evening, has faced protests from religious hardliners in Indonesia, the Philippines and South Korea.

Jakarta police said last week they would not give a green light to her June 3 show after Islamic hardliners threatened chaos if the singer entered Indonesia, meaning she has so far been unable to obtain a permit to perform.

The promoters of the US performer’s “The Born This Way Ball” show in Jakarta have sold more than 50,000 tickets, and Indonesian fans are outraged that the event might not go ahead.

Gaga also ruffled some feathers in Thailand by tweeting that “I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy fake Rolex,” remarks that some Thais complained cast the kingdom in a negative light.

But there was not expected to be disruption to the sell-out Bangkok concert.

Lady Gaga will also play three shows in Singapore next week. She is due to play in Jakarta after that, before flying south to New Zealand and Australia, and then to Europe.

The Monkey from Bali Made Her A Global Star

A student has been left feeling a little red-faced after an embarrassing incident with a monkey made her a global star.

Charmian Chen, who just happens to be a model, was visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest Ubud in Bali last month when two of the primates decided she was a little overdressed.

The 22-year-old student, from Taiwan, was on holiday on the tropical Indonesian island feeding long-tailed macaques when she was singled out. The two macaques apparently spotted a piece of corn that had fallen down Ms Chen's top and decided they wanted it back.

Despite her valiant effors to fend it off, one monkey managed to pull down her top leaving the red-faced model to cover herself as best she could, with her hands.

But what should have been an amusing holiday wardrobe malfunction has ended up catapulting Ms Chen to internet superstardom. Pictures of the incident have made headline news in her native Taiwan, with TV stations asking her to appear and talk about it.

The images have also spread around the globe, appearing on blog sites and forums in the U.S. and Britain. She said: 'I was on holiday and at first the pictures were just funny, but when I got back to Taiwan I had all these people trying to add me as friends on Facebook.

'I thought "that's a bit strange", and then one of them said they'd seen the pictures and I was really surprised, the next thing I knew I had TV stations ringing me.

'I was on vacation then in Bali so I didn't mind it, but back in Taiwan I was still studying so I didn't want to become famous just for my boobs.

'But actually it has been fun, people do come up to me and say "you're the monkey girl" and it does make me laugh.'

Ms Chen said the macaques, as well as being hungry, were also attracted to bikinis worn by many visitors.

She added: 'I think when they took my top down it was because of the corn but the park staff warn visitors that bright bikinis worn under dresses do attract the monkeys.

'I think it's the bright colours which they think might be fruit, well I don't know about that but it was very strange at the time.'
