Capirossi podiums in rally appearance

MotoGP star Loris Capirossi had a successful rally debut on Saturday when as he took third place in the Suzuki Swift Sport Cup - and ninth overall in the two-wheeled drive section of the Tempest Rally.

The Rizla Suzuki racer started the day steadily in his Group N car as he came to terms with the demanding 80km of special stages held in the forests and Military training grounds around the Hampshire town of Aldershot in England.

"I took my time in the early stages as I got used to driving on the loose surfaces and in the forests, it was certainly very different from the wide-open tracks that I am used to in MotoGP!" said the 125cc, 250cc, 500cc and MotoGP race winner.

As the day progressed, Capirossi became more confident and moved through the field before eventually getting into the top-three in the later stages, but couldn't quite find the few seconds needed to progress further up the leader board.

With comprehensive assistance from co-driver Craig Thorley, Capirossi brought his #65 car home in third place, just 14 seconds away from the eventual Swift Sport Cup rally - and championship - winner Mark Gamble.

"It has been a great day and it was really fun to do the rally," smiled Loris. "As I got more confident with the car my times improved and I was able to go a lot quicker and I think if we could have done a couple more stages I might have caught the leader, but I am really pleased with third in my first rally.

"It was a shame that Paul [Denning] crashed out, because I think our times were very close and it would have been good to have had that extra bit of competition with him, but I think I would have beaten him anyway!

"I want to say a big thank-you to Craig for some great co-driving and to the organisers for putting on such a good day, plus thanks to Suzuki for inviting me to take part in the event and giving me this opportunity to drive the fantastic Suzuki Swift in a rally," he concluded.

Denning, Capirossi's MotoGP team manager, was in close touch with Capirossi and the leaders in the early stages, but a mistake at the end of a fast straight on stage four saw the Englishman slide off the road and into a ditch. He was unable to get his Suzuki back into the stage within the time limit and was disqualified.

Denning and co-driver Jemma Bellingham did rejoin the rally for the four afternoon stages and restored some pride by recording some of the quickest times as the torrential rain and high winds battered the competitors.

"With Loris, I suppose it was slightly inevitable that one of us was going to crash trying to beat the other, and I think it was even more inevitable that it was going to be me!" said Denning.

"It was quite surprising - considering our lack of experience - that we were able to run so competitively and I think this is a testament to the experience of Jemma and Craig - our co-drivers - that certainly helped us all day long.

"Loris and I were very close to each other early on but I made a mistake and slid off the road so I wasn't able to complete the whole rally - which was a great shame - but thanks to Ian Phillipson of the Swift Sport Cup and the rally organisers I was able to get back out for the afternoon stages and restore a bit of pride, so that made things a bit better.

"Well done to Loris for his podium position, it's a good end to 2008 and I hope we taste some more champagne on two wheels in 2009!" the Englishman concluded.

Capirossi and Denning will now prepare for Rizla Suzuki MotoGP’s next winter test at Phillip Island in Australia later this month, when development of the 2009 GSV-R will continue.

Melandri 'considered quitting'

Marco Melandri has admitted that his disastrous 2008 MotoGP season prompted him to consider his future in the sport.

The former MotoGP World Championship runner-up was expected to enjoy one of his best premier-class seasons after signing for the title-winning Ducati Marlboro Team - Melandri's first factory ride since his 2003 MotoGP debut with Yamaha.

But whilst team-mate and reigning champion Casey Stoner steered the Desmosedici GP8 to six wins, eleven podiums, nine poles and second in the world championship, Melandri never looked comfortable and joined an increasing list of riders baffled by the Italian machine.

The high-point of Melandri's season was fifth position in May's Chinese Grand Prix, but it proved a false dawn and by June Melandri was considering 'throwing it all in'.

"The 2008 season is over. It's been a learning year due to disappointments, but I really can't complain because in June I'd predicted the end of a life stage," Melandri wrote on his official website. "I seriously risked giving up during the bad times in my career and throwing it all in.

"Then one day something clicked in my head and I realised that if loads of people still believe in me then I should as well!. Now I feel really good, my work is my great passion and I'll give it all I've got because I know I'll have a great time!"

Melandri, a five time MotoGP race winner, finished the season just 17th in the world championship standings with 51 points, compared with 280 for Stoner. Kawasaki's Anthony West - whom Melandri has replaced for 2009 - was the only full time rider to score less points.

"It's not that this year I didn't try my best; on the contrary, I tried everything I could to start every race as if I was going to win," insisted Marco. "But when everything goes wrong and it's meant to be, there's nothing you can do to change fate.

"One thing I've learnt is that at times it doesn't help to ask yourself what's not working and who or what's wrong, because it doesn't improve the future and only makes you worry more and isn't helpful. I believe that at times it's best to let things be, knowing that you've done the best you can."

Fortunately, Melandri enjoyed a highly encouraging debut on the Kawasaki ZX-RR during post race testing at Valencia, when he beat both his best race and qualifying lap on a Desmosedici and got within 0.022sec of new team-mate John Hopkins.

Melandri's final MotoGP test of 2008 will take place at Phillip Island in Australia, from November 26-27.

"I'm going to have a few days holiday and then at the end of November I'll pass by Japan before the last test of the season in Australia," wrote the 250cc world champion.
