Stoner on pole for Qatar MotoGP

Doha - Australian Casey Stoner took pole position on his Ducati for Sunday's night-time MotoGP race on a dusty track at Qatar's Losail International Circuit.

The 2007 world champion clocked a lap record of one minute, 55.286 seconds and starts ahead of six-times world champion Valentino Rossi and the Italian's Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo of Spain. [ID:nISS448791]

The 23-year-old Stoner complained about the weather conditions at the Doha circuit, which was dusty after light rain dried up in the Gulf Arab capital.

"I think it is going to be very risky toward the end of the race tomorrow," Stoner said in a press conference after the qualifying round. "We have less confidence than we had been prior to the race in the past."

Italian Andrea Dovizioso was fourth on a Honda, followed by fellow countryman Loris Capirossi on a Suzuki and American Colin Edwards on his Yamaha.

Stoner's U.S. team-mate Nicky Hayden, the 2006 world champion with Honda who has now switched to Ducati, fell towards the end of the qualifying session and was tended by a medical team. The scope of his injuries was not clear.

Spain's Julian Simon took pole for the 125cc category, clocking a lap record time of two minutes, 7.791 seconds.

Gabor Talmacsi of Hungary will be on pole for the 250cc race after settling a lap record time of two minutes, 1.902 seconds. (Reporting by Dania Saadi; editing by Sam Cage and John O'Brien.

Lyle rallies to make Masters cut

Scotland's Sandy Lyle rolled back the years in fine style with a two-under-par second-round 70 to secure his third successive Masters cut.

The 1988 champion, who posted a level-par 70 on Thursday, finished day two alongside Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and England's Lee Westwood.

"I'm happy to be playing the weekend for the third year in a row," he said.

Padraig Harrington was also two under, with Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Luke Donald all level par.

But it was the 52-year-old Lyle who captured the imagination with an outstanding back nine that included five consecutive birdies between holes 13 and 17.

"I started making some putts on the back nine and I had something like eight or nine single putts (all day)," the Scot told BBC Sport after carding seven birdies and five bogeys in blustery conditions.

"Not all long ones but nice ones at the right time. I wasn't hitting the ball that well in terms of knocking the pins out. I only hit about six or seven greens (in regulation) but I missed them in the right spot.

Lyle, the first Briton to win the Masters, began his round seven strokes off the pace and made a birdie at the par-five 2nd before losing ground with four consecutive bogeys from the 4th.

"It's been a grinding day. I knew after nine holes I had a bit of work to do as I was two over for the tournament," he said.

Lyle's back-nine run ended when he bogeyed the par-four 18th and he added: "I drove it well down the stretch and I was a bit disappointed on the last not to hit an eight-iron approach into the heart of the green. I just hit a poor shot.

"This isn't the sort of course where you can be aggressive. You have to be very cagey and take your chances when they arrive."

With the cut set at one over par - at the Masters players must be within 44 places of the lead and/or not more than 10 strokes behind the leader - Rose, Poulter, Houston Open winner Casey and Donald all made it with a shot to spare on level par, while Ross Fisher survived on the limit after shooting 76.

"I played really nicely for the first nine holes but on the back nine it was a case of hanging in there," said Donald. "I made a couple of good up-and-downs at the end. It will be really nice to be around for the weekend, anything can happen on this course."

Poulter felt the blustery conditions made the course far more difficult to negotiate than on Thursday, when it was bathed in sunshine and ideal for low scoring.

"At the start things were similar to yesterday but then the wind began to pick up," he said. "It's tricky out there but level par is never going to be too far off."

Oliver Wilson bowed out on four over while Welshman Ian Woosnam was a shot further back.

Ferrari problems frustrate Massa

Felipe Massa admits it will be hard for his struggling Ferrari team to fully recover from their worst start to a Formula 1 seasong since 1992.

Massa and team-mate Kimi Raikkonen finished Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix out of the points, just as they did in the season-opener in Australia.

"Last year we had a better car, so it was easy to improve things quickly and get into the fight again," he said.

"This time we have a difficult car so it will be a bit more difficult."

Last year, the reigning constructors champions, who now sit bottom of the table, were outside the points after the first race in Melbourne - but bounced back with a win in Malaysia to kick-start their season.

But ninth-placed Massa and Raikkonen, who finished 14th, never threatened the leading pack at Sepang as Brawn GP's dominance continued and Jenson Button clinched a second straight win in a race that was cut short because of torrential rain and fading light.

The Italian team even suffered the embarrassment of sending Raikkonen out on extreme wet tyres too early, a gamble which backfired badly as the Finn rapidly lost huge amounts of time on other drivers.

Massa was handicapped by starting back in 16th on the grid after another strategic decision had gone wrong in qualifying - and could not make any gains on the leading pack.

"We need to start from zero," added Massa.

"We need to get together to understand point by point what went wrong and try to improve everything. We were not great in the past and stupid now.

"For sure the car is not strong enough. We need to work on that. We made some mistakes on our strategies and we need to get together and understand what went wrong."

Ferrari are one of the teams, along with Red Bull, Renault and BMW Sauber, who are appealing to F1's decision-makers against the legality of diffusers on the cars of Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota.

All three teams have had strong starts to the season - but the four protesting teams claim their rear diffuser - a crucial part at the back of the cars - does not conform to new F1 regulations.

The case will be resolved by International Court of Appeal of motorsport's world governing body, the FIA, on 14 April in Paris.

"Everybody can see the guys who have the diffuser have a lot more downforce so it's completely difficult to fight with them," added Massa.

"If we get the championship the same for everybody for the next race, for sure it will be much more competitive.

"But if we don't, it will take quite a bit of time to get a diffuser on our car."

Raikkonen: diffuser issue critical to title hopes

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen believes the FIA’s ruling on the legality of the diffusers used by Brawn, Williams and Toyota will have a huge bearing on the outcome of the 2009 championship. Ferrari, alongside Renault, Red Bull and BMW Sauber, have protested the decision of stewards to allow the controversial designs to be raced in Australia and Malaysia and their appeal is due to be heard on April 14.

While Ferrari are yet to score points, Brawn, Williams and Toyota all enjoyed strong pace at the opening two Grands Prix, with Brawn clinching two consecutive victories. And Raikkonen believes that the F60’s underperformance can be chiefly blamed on a relative lack of downforce, a shortfall almost certainly made worse by the disparity in diffuser designs.

“We still don’t have any points after two races and this is a very difficult moment," the Finn told the Italian team’s official website. "The next race is in China, but a couple of days before the FIA’s Court of Appeal will decide about the diffuser. This decision will have an enormous impact on the championship.

"You just need to analyse the performance in the three sectors at Malaysia to understand that we’re losing a lot compared to the best cars. You can see that especially in the middle section, where downforce is really crucial.”

Although settling the diffuser issue one way or the other will help Ferrari decide in which direction their development programme needs to progress, Raikkonen is confident that everyone in the Italian team has been working flat-out to find other solutions to boost the F60’s pace.

“We’re missing grip and downforce and we’ve got to give it our all with what we have,” he added. “There are some new features coming up and I know that the team is working very hard to anticipate the whole development. We’ve seen other moments like this, but we know how to react and we’ll do it already at Shanghai.”

The Chinese Grand Prix will take place from April 17-19.
