Byrne ready to go at Assen

Shane Byrne has almost fully recovered from his knee injury that held him back in Valencia and is confident he can score a good result in Holland.

Last year, Marco Borciani's team did well at the Dutch circuit, taking fourth place with Ruben Xaus, while Max Biaggi finished the two races in tenth and twelfth place respectively due to the injury he had suffered in Australia.

Team manager Marco Borciani declared: "I hope that this time everything will go well. Shakey has proven till now he can be really fast, even when he is not physically at his best. We were pretty unlucky at Valencia, especially during practice when we blew off two out of three opportunities to get a good start. As a consequence, we will focus on practice at Assen. In a hard-fought competition like the WSBK is, in order to score great results you have to start from the front or second row of the grid so that you don't waste valuable time on the first corners. We learned our lesson in Valencia and although Shane had a great racing pace that could've enabled him to finish in the top 5, his starting position on the grid prevented him from doing better".

Haslam intends to stay top Brit and top Honda at Assen

By Michael Guy

Stiggy Honda rider Leon Haslam heads in to this weekend race at Assen in confident mood and determined to consolidate his position as top Brit in the series standings.

From the opening round of the championship, Haslam has been a revelation riding for the all new Stiggy Honda WSB team.

At round one in Australia he fought his way on to the podium and then backed up the result with two fifth places at Valencia last time out.

“Assen used to be my favourite track, but I haven’t raced there for five years so I haven’t ridden the new layout.

"I love racing there because there is always a good contingent of British fans and I’ve actually got a few people getting the ferry over to watch me..

“As a track it should be good for the Honda. I like the fast flowing tracks and the bike is developing every time we ride it.

"The chatter issues we’ve been having have been worse on flat or off camber corners, but at Assen the corners are banked which should help us.”

The 25 year old Brit also has the accolade of being top Honda rider in the standings, a position he intends to achieve despite being up the Dutch Ten Kate Honda team at their home circuit.

He said: “At every round this year I’ve shown the pace in terms of lap times to be in the top three so it’s nice knowing that heading into the weekend.

"So far we’ve been top Honda, but to beat the three Ten Kate Honda guys at their own track will be a tough one, but it’s still my goal.”

John Hopkins targets Haslam and the podium

By Michael Guy

WSB rookie John Hopkins remains confident he can become a front runner during the season onboard the Stiggy Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade.

Hopkins claimed 11th and 12th in the two races despite a fuelling problem and ran as high as sixth in the second Superbike race of the day.

The American had to reacquaint himself to fighting for position on virtually every lap of the race and was involved in an exciting battle with Max Biaggi, Ryuichi Kiyonari and Shane Byrne in both races.

Speaking to MCN he said:

“Trying to get used the tyre going off has been a really big experience for me. We’re also experiencing a fuel problem right now, it has a limiter on it and when it gets close it starts to cut out.

"That started with three laps to go and with three to go I had a group behind me and they all passed me. The problem is something we’ll get worked out for the future.”

The former Kawasaki MotoGP man left Valencia satisfied, but is under no illusion just how competitive the racing is going to be in his new WSB career.

“The whole weekend has been a great experience. The Superbike field is so close and if you are 2 or 3/10th of the pace you’re down in 10th or 15th position.

“My goal this year is to use the first few races as a learning experience. My plan and my expectations are to still be racing at the pointy end of the field by the time the season is out.

"I have strong confidence and we had a great race with Biaggi and Byrne. My team-mate Leon rode a fantastic race so that has certainly set the standard.

"First I’ve got to chase him down and then work on the rest of the field.”
