Champs Barcelona, Real Madrid set to maintain top spots

Madrid - Barcelona and Real Madrid are expected to maintain their perfect starts when they face early strugglers in the Spanish League this weekend.

Defending champions Barcelona, who lead Madrid on goal difference, will try to make it nine points out of nine when they host an Atletico Madrid in disarray today.

The following day, Madrid welcome promoted Xerez, who have begun badly with two losses in which they have failed to score.

Having become the first Spanish team to win the treble of League, King’s Cup and Champions League last season, Barcelona’s supremacy appears only to be threatened by Madrid, who have signed eight new players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema in a €254mil (US$374.5mil) spending spree.

Last weekend, Barcelona and Madrid earned comfortable away wins at Getafe and Espanyol, respectively, despite omitting several top players from their starting line-ups.

Barcelona and Madrid, who have won 21 of the past 25 Spanish League titles, boast budgets for this year of €405mil and €422mil (US$597mil and US$622mil), respectively.

In contrast, Xerez will pay only €9mil (US$13.3mil).

Such figures divide opinion in Spain, with some suggesting the powerhouses’ clout on and off the field makes the country’s league the world’s best. Others maintain that the gulf is now too great to make for an interesting competition.

Barcelona may face Atletico without Spain defender Gerard Pique, who twisted an ankle in the 0-0 draw at Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday. Dmytro Chygrynskiy, a recent signing from Shakhtar Donetsk, is set to play instead.

Atletico, whose fans staged a mass protest last week at the board’s running of the club, are 18th after taking only one point. On Tuesday, they were held to a 0-0 draw against APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League.

“I ask our supporters for patience,” Atletico coach Abel Resino said. “We have to grit our teeth. Now is not the time for tears.”

Atletico will miss five players, including goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo and defender Alvaro Dominguez, who begin international duty with Spain at the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt.

Madrid go into their first-ever league meeting with Xerez in confident mood after beating FC Zurich 5-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

“We have built a spectacular team after a season in which, let’s not forget, for the first time we were not seeded in the top group in the Champions League,” Madrid president Florentino Perez said.

Madrid coach Manuel Pelligrini may recall Benzema to the starting line-up, while defender Sergio Ramos, striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and midfielder Mahamadou Diarra will also hope for action after recovering from long-term injuries.

However, midfielder Xabi Alonso will miss the game with a bruised right calf muscle.

Only Valencia and Athletic Bilbao have kept pace with Barcelona and Madrid so far. However, Valencia midfielder David Silva acknowledged his team may not be able to match the powerhouses for long.

“It will be difficult to compete with Barcelona and Madrid because their wealth and players will always keep them up there,” Silva added.

Nevertheless, Valencia will expect another three points when they host Sporting Gijon tomorrow.

Bilbao, along with Barcelona the only team yet to concede a goal so far, will be bidding to become the first team to beat Villarreal this season. — AP

Mourinho's Inter first up for Barcelona

Barcelona opens its Champions League title defense against a familiar face when it faces Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan at San Siro.

Assistant to Bobby Robson at Camp Nou in the late 1990s when Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was an influential midfielder, Mourinho has since won the Champions League with FC Porto, two English league titles with Chelsea and Serie A with Inter.

Now he comes face to face with Guardiola, who last season guided Barca to the domestic league and cup titles as well as the Champions League. Although this is the first round of the long group stage of matches, Mourinho will want to make a mark by guiding Inter to a victory.

Wednesday's game could also see Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Inter's Samuel Eto'o facing each other a season after they played for each other's clubs. The two stars swapped teams in the offseason and Mourinho, who once described Ibrahimovic as the best striker in the world, said he would not dwell on the Swede's departure.

"A player that gave me as much as Ibra will always be in my heart, but I'm someone who forgets quickly and I'm focusing on my current players now," Mourinho said on Sunday. "We'll exchange a big hug before the game but, during the match, I don't even want to know who he is. He did a lot for Inter and Inter did a lot for him."

Eto'o, who scored Inter's first goal in Sunday's 2-0 victory over Parma, said Inter ought not overestimate the game against his former club.

"Now that the game against Parma is over we can think about Barcelona," he said. "We won't have any problems. We've just got to prepare ourselves well and approach this game in the best manner possible.

"Inter-Barcelona will be an important game for Inter, because it's the first in the Champions League, but I think all the games are important."

Barcelona and Inter are the strong favorites to qualify for the last 16-team knockout stage from their group and leave Dynamo Kiev and Russian champion Rubin behind. They meet Wednesday in Ukraine.

While Barcelona aims to become the first club since AC Milan in 1989-90 to collect the famous trophy two years in a row, England's Premier League hopes to maintain its strong recent performance in getting three clubs to the last four two seasons in a row.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United - the last four Champions League runners up - are back again, while United won the title in 2008.

Manchester United begins the group phase away to Turkey's Besiktas on Tuesday and also has surprise German champion Wolfsburg ad CSKA Moscow in its group.

Now guided by Carlo Ancelotti, who won the title with Milan as a player and a coach, Chelsea begins against FC Porto. The two clubs also have to face Atletico Madrid and APOEL Nicosia, who also meet on Tuesday.

Arsenal goes to Standard Liege on Wednesday, when group rivals lympiakos and AZ Alkmaar also meet. The Gunners come off their second Premier League loss in a row - 4-2 at Manchester City - while Standard will be without captain Steven Defour who broke his right foot in a league game on Saturday.

Five-time winner Liverpool hosts Hungarian Debrecen, which makes its firs visit to Anfield on Wednesday. Lyon, which has won six games in a row, meets Fiorentina in the other group match.

The Premier League's strong show contrasts with the decline of Serie A in European football's top club competition, one it used to dominate.

Four Italian sides have made it to this stage with seven-time winner AC Milan traveling to Marseille for its opening game on Tuesday and a mouthwatering meeting with nine-time winner Real Madrid further down the line.

Madrid, which has not won the title since 2002, starts with a visit to FC Zurich and Saturday's 3-0 win at Espanyol with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring for the second game in a row has given the Spanish football giant a confidence boost.

Routed 4-0 by Inter and held 0-0 on Saturday by lowly Livorno, Milan has made a poor start with Ronaldinho off fom.

"Ronaldinho is a fundamental player and, when he's in form, he makes an impact," said coach Leonardo.

Juventus begins at home to French champion Bordeaux on Tuesday but may be without playmaker Diego, who picked up a thigh injury in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Lazio. Bayern Munich, which has won te title four times, goes to Maccabi Haifa in the other group game.

Unirea Urziceni is one of eight clubs making their debuts at this stage of the competition and the team which has only been in top flight Romanian football for three years hopes to make a mark by winning away to Sevilla on Wednesday.

Samuel Eto'o and Diego Milito score in Inter's win over Parma

Newly signed strikers Samuel Eto'o and Diego Milito both scored in the second half and Inter Milan beat Parma 2-0 Sunday to stay within two points of Serie A title rival Juventus.

Eto'o, who swapped places with Zlatan Ibrahimovic going to Barcelona, found the target from the edge of the area in the 71st minute at the San Siro and Milito, who transferred from Genoa, collected a pass from Maicon to tally in the 89th.

"Inter did what it needed to to win a difficult game after two weeks of national team matches and with our thoughts already on Wednesday's game against Barcelona," Inter manager Jose Mourinho said, referring to his squad's Champions League opener Wednesday.

AS Roma rallied for a 2-1 win over 10-man Siena in Claudio Ranieri's first match since replacing Luciano Spalletti as the Giallorossi's manager.

"It was a debut full of emotions and it was important to win," the Roman-born Ranieri said.

Philippe Mexes equalized in the 73rd and substitute John Arne Riise scored off a free kick in the 90th for the winner after Massimo Maccarone had put Siena in front in the 26th.

Antonio Di Natale notched a hat trick to raise his league-leading scoring total to six goals in Udinese's 4-2 win over Catania, which led twice.

Juve, Genoa and Sampdoria each have a full nine points through three rounds. Inter and Fiorentina - which beat Cagliari 1-0 with a 55th-minute score from Alberto Gilardino - are next with seven each.

Genoa rallied to defeat Napoli 4-1 with goals from Sergio Floccari, Giandomenico Mesto, Hernan Crespo and Houssine Kharja. Genoa ended with 10 men and Napoli finished with nine.

Ten-man Sampdoria beat Atalanta 1-0 with a goal from Daniele Mannini in the 64th.

Juventus shut out Lazio 2-0 and AC Milan was held to a 0-0 draw at Livorno in Saturday's action.

In a match that was delayed at the start by 20 minutes due to a wet field, Palermo drew 1-1 with newly promoted Bari with a 90th-minute equalizer from Igor Budan.

Also, Chievo Verona won 2-0 at Bologna.

Wesley Sneijder had Inter's only decent chance of the first half, with a shot from the newly signed Netherlands midfielder blocked with a diving save from Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

Jose Mourinho sent on Mario Balotelli at halftime to join Eto'o and Milito in a three-pronged attack for Inter and the move paid off with two goals.

Ranieri was hired after Roma opened with two losses and the former Chelsea and Juventus coach immediately made an impact by sending on Riise for Juan early in the second half.

Maccarone dribbled right around central defenders Juan and Mexes when he scored.

Siena was reduced to 10 men in the 79th when midfielder Paul Codrea picked up his second yellow card.

Japan-England World Cup Warm-Up Mooted

TOKYO, September 12 (QNA) - Japan plan to play England in a warm-up match in May ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa, on condition that they are not drawn in the same pool, a sports daily said Friday.

The two associations have reached a "basic agreement" on staging the friendly, possibly on May 29 in Austria, the Nikkan Sports daily said.

Japan Football Association spokesman Ichirota Fukushi said he was unable to confirm the report.
England beat Croatia 5-1 at home on Wednesday to book their place in South Africa 2010 with a clean record of eight straight wins in Europe's Group Six.

They plan to have a training camp in Austria, possibly in Salzburg, from May 27, the daily said.

Japan, who qualified for the finals by finishing second to Australia in Asia's Group A, will be training in the Swiss town of Montana around that time.

In their two previous internationals, Japan lost to England 2-1 in 1995 in London and drew 1-1 in 2004 in Manchester.

Japan coach Takeshi Okada has vowed to test his Blue Samurai against the world's footballing powers as he chases a top-four finish in South Africa.

The former Asian champions went down 3-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly in Enschede on Saturday, but battled from behind to beat African qualifiers Ghana 4-3 in Utrecht on Wednesday.
They will host Scotland and Togo in October and travel to Durban for a friendly against South Africa in November.(QNA)
