Barcelona Battles Mexican Atlante in Club World Cup

Abu Dhabi, December 16 (QNA) - The Spanish Barcelona football team emption to get the sixth title in 2009 begins Wednesday when they take on Mexican football team Atlante in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Last season Barcelona became the first La Liga team to win the treble of league, cup and European Cup, and Pep Guardiola's team added two further trophies at the start of this campaign, winning the European and Spanish Super Cups.

Two more victories in the United Arab Emirates this week would give the Catalan club the set, with the Mexican side providing the first hurdle today, and then their opponents in the final will be the Copa Libertadores champions Estudiantes who beat AFC Champions League winners Pohang Steelers 2-1 on Monday.

Both the goals for Estudiantes were scored by Leandro Benitez while Pohang's Brazilian star Denilson reduced the deficit for the Korean side. Three Pohang players - Hwang Jae-won, Kim Jae-sung and Shin Hwa-yong - received red cards

"I m proud of my players," said Pohang coach Sergio Farias. "We showed that we could match the South American champions, and we were extremely unlucky to lose.

"We had three players sent off. It could have been a different story."

After surviving an early attempt on goal, Pohang could have taken the lead when Shin Hyung-min s cross was almost met by No Byung-jun with the Estudiantes goalkeeper goalkeeper completely out of position. But in the end the ball flew over the post.

Pohang had two more quick chances denied - Denilson s sharp, cutting cross and Kim Jung-kyum's 20-yard strike that was collected by the goalie.

In first-half injury time, Benitez fired a free kick that took excessive curl and zoomed into the Pohang net.

The start of the final half saw an Estudiantes defender stretching his left leg to clear a Denilson shot. Benitez then doubled the Argentinean side's lead in the 53rd minute after beating Shin Hwa-yong to the ball.

Minutes later, Pohang lost captain Hwang Jae-won for a second bookable offence.

Denilson reduced the deficit against the run of play in the 71st minute with a left-footed shot.Justify Full

The Korean club saw their strength further reduced a minute later when Kim Jae-sung received his marching orders before Shin Hwa-yong joined him for an early shower. Pohang were forced to assign goalkeeping duties to Denilson and the battle was well and truly lost.

Estudiantes coach Alejandro Sabella said: "We re very pleased to have reached the final. Credit to Pohang, they did well. The last 20 minutes of the first half was very even, and so was the start of the second half.

"But our second goal gave us the psychological advantage and Pohang became frustrated after that."(QNA)

History of the NFL Super Bowl Game

By Rich Stephenson

Prior to the merger, NFL and AFL leagues were two bitter rivals. There was a need to unit all fans and club sides from both leagues, hence the landmark agreement that cemented and brought about the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl Sunday is that day of the year in which winners from both leagues (NFL and AFL) come together to determine who is the champion of the world. The winning team gets the Vince Lombardi Trophy --posthumously named after the coach of the Green Bay Packers that won the first two Super Bowl games. Vinci Lombardi died in September 1970.

The game, which is usually played once in a year has witnessed many date shifts; from first to mid Sunday in of the month of January, it later settled on the second Sunday and from which point it went off again to the third unto the last and later revised back to the first Sunday in the month of February. Let us hope there is no further shift in date!!

Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt coined the name ''Super Bowl''. He got the idea from the toy Super Ball after watching his children playing with it. There were other suggestions like ''The Big one’’ and whatnot. The name Super Bowl was initially supposed to be a temporary name for the championship game. The name Super Bowl has gained so much popularity in such a way that, it is now the official name of America’s de facto holiday.

NFL’s Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowl matches. The first and second Super Bowl Championship Games were not advantage with roman numerals until the third Super Bowl championship game(Super Bowl III), talking of which was won by AFL's New York Jets. Kansas City Chiefs subsequently won Super Bowl IV in New Orleans.

In the United States alone, the Super Bowl is the most-watch TV broadcast. The game has the highest rating in terms of viewership: watched by an average of 90 million Americans. The game has also recorded viewership as high as 200 million and above. Outside the United States about 140 million viewers tune up to watch the championship every super bowl Sunday.

Super Bowl Sunday halftime show has grown from mere matching parades by High School bands to a super show that commands the respect of the global entertainment industry. Thought the halftime show is only 30 minutes, it is no doubt, one of the important highlights of the championship game. Various America and international top musicians have performed in halftime shows.

The Super Bowl is without any forms of controversies. A case in point was Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004, when Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson’s right breast for the entire world to see in what appeared to be a mistake. Her nipple had a star-shaped ring around it. The incident prompted organizers to place a ban on MTV that forbids the media company from involving in another halftime show, in any capacity, in the future.

Rich Stephenson is in the web development field for a ticket broker that sells tickets to all sports, concert and theater events. Ticket broker also sells Super Bowl Tickets as well as Cheap Football Tickets for and all other football games.

Indianapolis Colts vs Buffalo Bills NFL Preview

By: Sports Betting

After the Indianapolis Colts all but threw away their chance for an undefeated season -- creating a swirl of controversy in the process -- they have even less reason to play their starters in the regular-season finale.

Peyton Manning and the rest of the Colts' stars will almost certainly see an abbreviated afternoon of action in Sunday's postseason tuneup against the host Buffalo Bills.

Leading 15-10 in the third quarter against the visiting New York Jets last Sunday, the Colts were in good shape to improve to 15-0 and win their 24th straight regular-season game until coach Jim Caldwell replaced Manning with rookie quarterback Curtis Painter.

Wide receiver Reggie Wayne, tight end Dallas Clark and running back Joseph Addai were also removed, and Painter turned the ball over twice as the Jets surged to a 29-15 victory.

Team president Bill Polian had insisted all season that the Colts' lone goal is to win the Super Bowl, and with the top seed in the AFC already secured, they proved it by removing the three-time league MVP and his top weapons from harm's way.

"The perfect season was never an issue with us," Polian said. "We've said it time and time and time again. It's somebody else's issue, but not ours. That was of no concern. Football logic has to come into play, and that logic is it makes no sense to have guys out there with the potential for injuries."

The decision did not sit well with the team's fans, who booed as it became clear the Colts (14-1) would not become the first team to finish unbeaten since the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

"Until any player in here is the head coach, you follow orders and you follow them with all of your heart," Manning said. "That's what we've done as players. We follow orders."

Besides earning critics, Caldwell's move also affected the AFC playoff race, giving the Jets the inside track on a wild-card berth following their victory. There won't be nearly as much controversy about Manning coming out early against the Bills, who are guaranteed to miss the playoffs for the 10th straight season.
