Toni strike helps Roma sink leaders Inter

Rome (ANTARA News/Reuters) - A Luca Toni goal gave AS Roma a thrilling 2-1 home win over Inter Milan on Saturday that took them within a point of the Serie A leaders and kept the three-way title race wide open approaching the final stretch.

The striker controlled a mis-hit Rodrigo Taddei shot and fired home in the 72nd minute as the hosts continued their remarkable recovery from the disarray they found themselves in at the start of the season.

Inter`s Diego Milito had equalised just six minutes earlier with a goal that looked offside, after Roma`s Daniele De Rossi opened the scoring in the 17th by capitalising on a blunder by goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Champions Inter hit the woodwork three times, the last occasion from Milito deep in stoppage time. Third-placed AC Milan can pull level with Roma on 62 points with seven games to go if they overcome injuries, suspensions and poor form to beat Lazio on Sunday (1845 GMT).

"This is a great, beautiful night," Toni told Sky television. "We`ve been chasing for a while.

"It was important to win tonight to try to realise a dream. Now we`re a point away we`ll see what happens." (Uu.A016/T009/P003)

Catania shock Inter after Muntari calamity

Rome - Inter Milan threw away the lead to lose 3-1 at lowly Catania on Friday and blow open the Serie A title race in almost comical fashion.

The leaders, who visit Chelsea in their Champions League last-16 second leg on Tuesday with a 2-1 advantage, could see their domestic lead slashed to a point if second-placed AC Milan beat visiting Chievo on Sunday.

Inter`s Ghanaian substitute Sulley Muntari had only been on the pitch a minute when he committed a foul. He then handled Giuseppe Mascara`s resultant free kick to concede a penalty and was also sent off for a second yellow card.

Mascara converted the spot kick nine minutes from time with a cheeky, dinked finish to put the hosts 2-1 up and Jorge Martinez added a third in the 90th minute.

"Inter are the strongest team in the championship but tonight we have shown that when we play with grit and determination we can beat anybody," Uruguayan forward Martinez told Sky TV.

Inter, who have won just once in six league games having appeared to be cruising to a fifth straight scudetto, went ahead early in the second half through Diego Milito but fellow Argentine forward Maxi Lopez equalised on 74 minutes.

Sweet Revenge
Until we took the lead we controlled the game then we paid for a lack of concentration," said Inter technical director Marco Branca.

"We knew Catania were enjoying a good moment of form. We weren`t thinking about Chelsea, that will be another game."

The win was sweet revenge for tough-talking Catania coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, a former Inter assistant coach who has repeatedly clashed verbally with outspoken Inter boss Jose Mourinho over the last two seasons.

Mourinho was serving the final part of a three-match touchline ban but looked to have produced a masterstroke at halftime following an even first period.

He introduced winger Ricardo Quaresma, who troubled the home defence, and Milito was soon on the scoresheet after the consistently impressive Wesley Sneijder and Samuel Eto`o had combined to set up his 16th league goal of the campaign.

However, just when the close-season buy from Genoa looked to have sealed yet another Inter win, sixth-from-bottom Catania stormed back to inflict the third league defeat of the season on the champions with 10 games left. (Uu.SYS/A008/S026)

Woods will still be "terrifick," says Obama

Miami - U.S. President Barack Obama said on Wednesday he was sure scandal-hit Tiger Woods will still be a "terrific golfer" when he returns to competition at next month`s Masters tournament.

In an interview with the Fox News Channel, Obama was asked his thoughts on Woods` decision to return to golf at the event.

Woods has not played in a tournament since November last year after disappearing from public view following tabloid revelations about his marital infidelities.

"I think that Tiger has acknowledged that he betrayed his family; that is a personal issue that he has got to work out," said Obama, himself a keen golfer.

"I hope they`ve worked it out and I am sure he is still going to be a terrific golfer."
Obama was due to host a St. Patrick`s Day party on Wednesday with Irish golfer Padraig Harrington among the guests.
