Barcelona to travel to China for pre-season

European champions Barcelona and their superstar forward Lionel Messi will play China’s Super League winners Beijing Guoan at the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in August, state press said Thursday.

“Barcelona’s Beijing match is basically set for August 8 in the Bird’s Nest,” the Beijing Youth Daily quoted promoter Xia Haifeng as saying.

“They will be bringing their top line-up. This is stipulated (in the contract).”

Xia said that 30 percent of Barcelona’s appearance fee had already been paid, although he did not specify the amount involved.

Messi, widely hailed as the best player in the world, is just one of the draws in the star studded line-up of the Spanish giants.

Rossi asks for TV to watch Grand Prix

Valentino Rossi has spent a comfortable first night in hospital following an operation to secure a broken shin bone.

Rossi broke his leg Saturday during a crash in practice ahead of the Italian Grand Prix. After an x-ray at the Mugello circuit's medical facility, he was moved by helicopter to the Careggi medical center in Florence.

"This morning Valentino is fine and he asked to have a television so that he can watch the Grand Prix," Dr. Roberto Buzzi, who performed the operation, said Sunday. "He doesn't have pain or fever and is in bed. He was fine overnight and recovering as we hoped.

"Tomorrow we will wash and stitch the wound," he said. "Later he will be moved to another ward where he will be more comfortable."

The nine-time world champion is expected to stay in hospital for a week and has been told recovery will take between four and six months.

Dr. Buzzi described the injury as the worst kind he has operated on and was doubtful that Rossi would return to racing this year.

It will be the first time that Rossi has not competed in his home Grand Prix, a race he has won nine times. It also ends his record run of 230 successive races since his debut in the 125cc class at the 1996 Malaysian Grand Prix.

"We expect him to be here for seven days and we won't rush his recovery," Dr. Buzzi said. "We will continue to check his results and ensure we are following the correct recuperation procedures."

Switzerland, Italy draw 1-1 in final WCup warmup

Switzerland and defending champion Italy will head to the World Cup without a win in their warmup matches, after drawing 1-1 on Saturday.

Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, whose team has not won since qualifying last October to play in South Africa, said he was satisfied with the result and performance.

"It was important for us that the team was rewarded for its tough preparation," Hitzfeld said.

Switzerland took a 10th minute lead when Gokhan Inler fired a powerful shot into the bottom left corner from 18 meters (20 yards).

Italy leveled in the 14th when Fabio Quagliarella's header went in off the post, after he reacted faster than defender Philippe Senderos to a loose, looping ball.

"We wanted to put ourselves in a position to be ready for our first game of the World Cup," Quagliarella said. Italy opens against Paraguay on June 14.

Though Italy did not shine in a match lacking creativity and scoring chances, the result is a good omen.

The Italians drew 1-1 in Geneva against Switzerland in warmups before winning the World Cup in 1982 and in 2006.

Hitzfeld long ago chose Italy as the best preparation for opening in Group H against tournament favorite Spain on June 16.

However, the match arrived with the out-of-form Swiss needing a boost to morale after a 1-0 defeat against Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi rested most of his regular starters with only captain Gianluca Zambrotta having begun a 2-1 loss by Mexico 48 hours earlier.

"This wasn't the second team because we are one Italy. We had to give those players from the Mexico game a rest," Lippi said.

The action started busily, despite both teams citing weariness in their midweek defeats after coming down from Alpine training camps at altitude.

Inler's goal was a quick reply to Swiss critics who this week said he has not stepped up as the dominating force they expected.

"Gokhan showed the right reaction," Hitzfeld said. "He is a silent leader, but is someone who can take the responsibilty on himself."

The 25-year-old midfielder cut inside a challenge and shot left-footed to beat goalkeeper Federico Marchetti's dive.

Inler is the only Swiss player to score in its five-match winless streak. He converted a penalty in a 3-1 loss to Uruguay in March.

Italy leveled four minutes later as Quagliarella beat Senderos to head a ball which spun upward from their first aerial challenge.

The first half passed without another clear chance, though Giampaolo Pazzini just failed to connect on two 42nd-minute crosses into the Swiss goalmouth.

Both sides struggled to find an attacking rhythm in the second half, even before a succession of substitutions further disrupted the flow of play.

Swiss substitutes Eren Derdiyok and Hakan Yakin had late efforts go off target before Marchetti was finally forced into a save in stoppage time.

The 18-year-old midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri advanced deep in the Italian half and his shot was parried to safety by the Cagliari 'keeper.

In South Africa, Switzerland also faces Chile and Honduras.

Italy completes its Group F campaign against New Zealand and Slovakia.

Mighty Brazil arrive in South Africa for World Cup

Johannesburg - Brazil arrived in Johannesburg Thursday to embark on a journey they hope will take them to a record sixth World Cup title.

Usually hot pre-tournament favourites wherever the quadrennial international football showcase is staged, Brazil have been downgraded by many bookmakers to second spot behind European champions Spain.

A crisp, clear dawn in the South African economic hub greeted the South Americans, who flew from Brasilia having been given an official send-off by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Landing 12 hours after the Australian `Socceroos` became the first qualifiers to reach South Africa, Brazil followed the same procedure of restricted assess to select TV crews and photographers and no interviews.

The 23-man squad, coaches and officials boarded a brightly coloured luxury coach for a journey to a hotel in a northern suburb golf course and the five-time world champions plan to train at a nearby school.

Brazil are with 2006 semi-finalists Portugal, Didier Drogba-led Ivory Coast and tournament outsiders North Korea in Group G, labelled the `Group of Death` after the Cape Town draw last December because of its strength.

And should a Brazilian squad boasting stars like Julio Cesar, Maicon, Kaka and Luis Fabiano match expectations and top the mini-league table, they could face fellow South American qualifiers Chile in the knockout second round.

The South Americans are no strangers to Johannesburg having won the World Cup dress-rehearsal Confederations Cup tournament there last June after wiping out a two-goal deficit against surprise finalists United States.

Coach Dunga, captain and midfield `enforcer` in the 1994 World Cup-winning team, must hope he can banish the hoodoo that envelopes Confederations Cup title holders in the subsequent World Cup.

The curse has struck Brazil twice as they finished 1998 World Cup runners-up to Zinedine Zidane-inspired hosts France, and fell to `Les Bleus` again four years ago, this time in the quarter-finals.

No country is more passionate about football than Brazil and banks have been cleared to close when the national team faces North Korea on June 15, Ivory Coast five days later and Portugal a further five days into the tournament.

Dunga was handed one of the most stressful posts in football four years ago despite no managerial experience after Carlos Alberto Parreira paid the price for the last-eight exit.
He will be under intense scrutiny in South Africa, not least for refusing to include 2002 World Cup winner Ronaldinho in his squad after the AC Milan midfielder showed a revival in form.

Adriano, Alexandre Pato, Neymar and Paulo Ganso were other controversial omissions and knives will glisten in the South African sun if Brazil do not clutch the World Cup trophy and the 30-million-dollar cheque.

The first World Cup hosted by Africa kicks off on June 11 at the 90,000-seat Soccer City near the black township of Soweto with Parreira-coached South Africa facing Mexico and finishes with the July 11 final at the same venue. (Uu.S022/P003)

15 countries to participate in Tour de Singkarak II

Padang - Fifteen countries have confirmed their plan to participate in the Tour de Singkarak II cycling race in West Sumatra on June 1-6, 2010.

"Twelve teams from 15 countries will participate in the cycling race competition," head of the local tourism and culture office, James Hellyward, said when asked for confirmation by phone here on Saturday.

The foreign participants would be a Azad University team from Iran, Japan`s Aisan Racing Team, Roadbike Philippines 7 Eleven Racing Team, Bike Bug North Sydney-Carol & O`Dea Lawyers Australia, Petrochemical Tabriz Team of Iran, Malaysian National Team, Giant Asia Racing Team of Taiwan, Budget Forklifts of Australia team and Doha Team of Qatar.

He said the number of participants had dropped this year. He said the committee did not know the cause of the decline in participation.

He said the participants are expected to arrive here on Sunday although some of them had already come.

He said the length of the route for racing had been increased. The route for relay race I (Padang city) team trial this year will be 15.8 kilometer long.

"Here their speed and endurance will be tested," he said.

He said the number of teams to compete in the event was recorded at 22 out of 34 who had earlier registered.

Ten teams from Indonesia will participate in the event out of 16 registered so far. "The committee has deliberately limited the number of teams from Indonesia," he said.

The ten teams are United Bike Kencana, Dodol Picnic Garut, Kutai Kartanegara Cycling Team, Araya Indonesia, Bintang Kranggan Cycling Club, Customs Cycling Club, the West Sumatra ISSI team, West Java Cycling Team, Indonesia National Team and the Yogyakarta ISSI team.

The Tur De Singkarak II will be divided into six relay races with a total distance of around 570 kilometers.

"The TDS II route is challenging because of its ascents and obstacles," he said. (T.SYS/H-YH/S026)
