Stoner thrilled with milestone win

Casey Stoner followed up his first win of the season at Aragón with a second in succession in the Grand Prix of Japan on Sunday, and with his 22nd career victory in the premier class moved level with MotoGP greats Geoff Duke, Kenny Roberts senior and John Surtees.

“This win feels great. I could have never imagined when I began my first season in Grand Prix at 16 years of age that I would reach this level and all I can say is that it is an honour to be alongside such great names,” said the 24 year-old. “I have taken all my MotoGP wins with Ducati and it is down to their fantastic support, hard work and above all their belief in me that this has been possible.”

Stoner’s success at Motegi came after a weekend of intense hard work, having initially struggled to find the right balance on his Desmosedici GP10.

“With this track being so heavy on the front we were trying to make the bike a lot more stable. We had a lot of problems with the brakes and the bike doing wheelies, and every time we improved that we made the rear worse so we were having a bit of a disaster weekend!” he explained.

“We just couldn’t get any grip on the bike so we went a little closer to more traction rather than stability on the brakes, and it paid off for us. We found that time that we were missing. We tried something else but it didn’t really work in warm up this morning and we didn’t feel that comfortable. We went more or less back to what we had in qualifying with another step in another direction, a little bit of a lucky dip, but it worked!”

Under pressure from Andrea Dovizioso for most of the 24-lap race Stoner eventually crossed the finish line 3.868s ahead of the Italian, but said the margin of victory made the win appear more comfortable than it had been.

“After the first couple of laps and when I saw the times I was able to do I thought we were in with a chance of winning this one, but it wasn’t without a fight,” said Stoner. “Andrea was there the whole way, pushing me, and every time I thought I had a small gap to take a breather he came back again. I had to keep pushing the whole race and it wasn’t until the last lap that I really got to relax. It was a big victory for us, especially at this circuit, and it means a lot to us.”

Shoya Tomizawa honoured at Motegi

The podium area was the setting at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit on Sunday for a special ceremony in tribute to Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa.

Shoya's parents were present to receive a special plaque from FIM President Vito Ippolito displaying his number 48, which has been retired from the MotoGP World Championship in honour of his memory and contribution to the sport.

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta then handed over a book containing the many messages of support sent by MotoGP fans to the family, friends and Technomag-CIP team of Shoya - members of which were also on the podium - in the aftermath of his tragic death on September 5th.

And Olivier Metraux was also at the ceremony to present Shoya's parents with the Michel Metraux Trophy, which was awarded posthumously following a unanimous vote by his fellow Moto2 riders. A special tribute video then recalled Shoya's best moments from his two full seasons in the World Championship.

Malaysia to lead Southeast Asia's medal hunt

Malaysia will spearhead Southeast Asia's hunt for gold at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, with the region's hopes resting mainly on badminton, squash, table tennis and possibly lawn bowling.

Malaysia won a record 10 gold medals when it hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998, the first ever to be held in Asia. With 203 athletes headed to India - its largest contingent ever - Malaysia is confident it can reach at least the 1998 level.

"I hope to see our national anthem played at least 10 times," Malaysian Sports Minister Shabery Cheek said. "I hope our athletes will not doubt their own abilities but will press on."

Malaysia's best medal hopes are Lee Chong Wei, the top-ranked men's badminton player, and Nicol David, who won her fifth World Open title earlier this month in Egypt to celebrate 50 straight months as the world's top female squash player.

Lee, nursing a back injury he picked up during the world championships in Paris last month, proved his form by winning the recent Japan Open title, defeating Lin Dan of China 22-20, 16-21, 21-17.

"Chong Wei's immediate task is to ensure Malaysia secures the men's singles gold and help earn the team gold," National Sports Council director general Zolkples Embong said.

David is favored to win her first Commonwealth Games singles gold, the only major honor that has eluded her. She has a bye into the second round and her main rival is expected to be Jenny Duncalf of England.

David could end up with two medals as she resumes her partnership with Ong Beng Hee in mixed doubles. The third-seeded pair won silver in the event at the 2002 Manchester Games.

Malaysia is not expected to create any ripples in the pool, but its best medal prospect comes from synchronized divers Leong Mun Yee and Pandelela Rinung, who won bronze in the 10-meter platform at the world championships. However, Pandelela's double silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore last month left the 17-year-old with a neck injury.

The Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation has set a four-gold target in New Delhi, double its two-gold haul at the 2006 Melbourne Games. The medals were provided by Siti Zalina Ahmad in the women's singles and women's triples team.

The 31-year-old Siti Zalina, who will carry Malaysia's flag at Sunday's opening ceremony, is trying to become the first Malaysian to win a hat trick of gold medals in the games.

Also, top-ranked Safuan Said is a strong bet for the men's singles gold.

Singapore is not only sending its largest-ever contingent - 68 athletes and 34 officials - but also the youngest ever with 55 debutants and 29 athletes who are 21 and younger. They will compete in eight out of the 17 events.

Singapore's hopes rest on its table tennis team, which won four of the five golds at the last games in Melbourne. Making his debut at the games is Singapore Sports School student Pang Xue Jie, who is the youngest on his team at 18.

"I expect to see performances which demonstrate fighting spirit and are targeted at achieving personal bests," Singapore chef de mission Annabel Pennefather said. "If all our athletes approach their respective competitions with this mindset, for some their very best would translate to personal bests and-or new national records. For others it would mean medals."

Singapore is also taking part in synchronized swimming for the first time, represented by Gayle Esther Lee, a student at Stanford University in California.

"I love both swimming and artistic gymnastics, so I took up synchronized swimming as it's a combination of these two sports," she said.

Brunei, the tiny oil-rich sultanate on Borneo island, is sending 11 athletes, all of whom will compete in lawn bowling.

"I feel that we could get some surprise wins against the top teams like England, Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia," Brunei lawn bowling coach Eric Johannes said.
Brunei has never won a medal of any color since it began participating at the Commonwealth Games in 1990.

Mourinho, Van Gaal chase more European glory

Jose Mourinho is looking to bring long-awaited European glory back to Inter Milan on Saturday, and Louis van Gaal is aiming to guide Bayern Munich to a fifth title in Europe's most prestigious club competition.

The coaches in the Champions League final have won 28 major titles combined, and this year Mourinho will put his reputation as one of the game's best coaches on the line against an experienced manager who has won league titles in four different countries.

Mourinho, who led Chelsea to its first English league title in 50 years, is out to lead one of European football's biggest clubs to its first European Cup triumph since 1965. He will do so amid strong speculation that he will then walk out on the Italian club and move to Real Madrid.

Mourinho has won six league titles in Portugal, England and Italy among his 13 major successes, and the 47-year-old self-proclaimed "Special One" is one of the most sought after coaches in the game.

"In Porto we won UEFA Cup, (league) championship and Portuguese Cup. The next year we won (European) Super Cup, championship and Champions League, so we did all three," Murinho said during the buildup to Saturday's final.

But despite two Premier League titles in a row, the Portuguese coach failed to achieve Champions League success with Chelsea and left the club, unhappy that Russian owner Roman Abramovich was making transfer decisions without his approval.

He eventually took over an Inter side which had dominated Serie A but failed in Europe. The owners wanted someone to end that long wait for another European Cup.

"This would be an incredible achievement because the level of the competition is so high and our road to the final was an incredible road," said Mourinho, whose team had to play defending champion Barcelona both in the group stage and the semifinals.

Inter also beat Chelsea home and away, and his former club went on to win both the Premier League and FA Cup.

"It was an incredibly difficult way to get to the final," Mourinho said.

Bayern also had a tough route to the final but capitalized on a little good fortune along the way.

On the brink of going out, Bayern came from behind to knock out Juventus in the group phase after a 4-1 win away from home. A disputed goal from Miroslav Klose gave Bayern a 2-1 first leg lead over Fiorentina, and the Gern side advanced on away goals in the first knockout round.

Bayern again appeared to be on the way out when it trailed Manchester United 3-0 in the second leg at Old Trafford. But the German club scored two to again go through on away goals.

Bayern went on to beat Lyon and reach its eighth final, then stretched its Bundesliga record number of titles to 22 and outplayed Werder Bremen 4-0 in the German Cup final. Back in November, however, Bayern was in eighth place in the Bundesliga, on the brink of being knocked out of the Champions League. Van Gaal sensed then that his time was short.

"If I don't produce, I will be fired," the 58-year-old Bayern coach said at the time.

The Dutchman won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995, so both he and Mourinho are out to join Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970 and Hamburg 1983) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997 and Bayern 2001) as winners with two different clubs.

Bayern's players have called on all fans of Bundesliga clubs to get behind the team on Saturday because a triumph would earn the nation four spots in next season's competition and Serie A would lose one.

Both teams are missing key players. Inter is without Brazil defensive midfielder Thiago Motta and Bayern won't have France winger Franck Ribery. Both were sent off in the semifinals.

Inter has won repeated Italian titles with barely any Italians on its starting lineup and a side packed with talented and hugely experienced players from Brazil and Argentina, and a creative Dutch midfielder in Wesley Sneijder.

Van Gaal's team has a strong Dutch influence, too, with Arjen Robben and Marc van Bommel playing alongside Germany internationals Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm.

English referee Howard Webb will take charge of his first Champions League final. Although a familiar face in the competition for the past few years, he has missed out on the final because Premier League clubs have made it to the previous five, making him ineligible.
