Vettel Earned Title the ‘Right Way’

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - After a season of tension and sometimes bitter rivalry within his team, Red Bull boss Christian Horner on Monday warmly praised both of his drivers for their sporting behavior after Sebastian Vettel had beaten Mark Webber to win the drivers’ world title.

The 23-year-old German triumphed in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to take the title in dramatic fashion as Australian Webber finished eighth, Vettel being crowned as the sport’s youngest champion.

The champagne soaked team chief, a cautious and methodical man whose team partied late into the night, said: “To have done it the right way, to have won it on the circuit, I am just delighted with the way that Sebastian drove in this race.

“The fact that we did it without team orders, the fact that at the end of the day the best guy won it — that’s the way it should be.”

Horner also removed all doubts about Webber’s future when he said that the 34-year-old Australian would be back for another tilt at the title with the Red Bull team next year.

“Mark is a big part of our team, he is a tremendous driver and he will have another chance next year,” Horner said.

The team’s driver’s and constructor’s titles capped a memorable year for the Milton Keynes-based team and also supplied an ethical triumph for the sport.

There had been fears that two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso could have won the title for Ferrari who at the German Grand Prix had used team orders, which are banned.

On Sunday, by using defensive tactics to cover a possible threat from Australian Webber, they ended up wrecking their own prospects as Alonso was unable to recover from an unnecessary early pit stop and finished just seventh.

It signaled that in a fresh new era led by the younger champions, there is a new fresh morality sweeping through the sport.

Vettel had started the last race of the season 15 points behind Alonso and eight behind Webber.

He knew he had to win and hope for the best, recalling Kimi Raikkonen’s incredible comeback for Ferrari from 17 points down with two races remaining,

“I didn’t know anything until I crossed the checkered flag,” Vettel said.

“The last 10 laps I was wondering as my race engineer, every lap, was trying to give some advice and trying to help me carry the car home. I was thinking ‘Why is this guy nervous? We must be in a bloody good position.’ ”

“I just wanted to make sure, not get any distraction, just focus on myself. Then he came on the radio and screams at me that we have won the world championship,” he said.

Growing up in the era of Michael Schumacher, Vettel is steeped in Formula One. He watched as a kid and has a strong sense of its history.

“I was actually thinking about Kimi’s situation today,” Vettel said. “I think it was a little bit of a similar situation.

Meanwhile, Alonso defended his team’s strategy of calling him in for an early pit stop after he finished only seventh in Abu Dhabi.

The Spaniard, who went into the race as the series leader, could not fight back from his mid-field position to score enough points to make an impact.

“After the race, it is always very easy to see the best strategy,” Alonso said.

“This is a sport. This is motor racing. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose.”

Anticipation in Abu Dhabi Ahead of Deciding Formula One Championship Race

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - With the race for the Formula One championship on the line on Sunday, the four drivers in contention ahead of the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix played down expectations this week and kept their tactics under wraps.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has the best chance to claim the title, but Red Bull rivals Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are close behind and McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton holds an outside chance of winning.

After Vettel and Webber finished 1-2 at the Brazilian GP, the attention has been on how the teammates will approach the race in Abu Dhabi. Will Vettel move over and let Webber pass if he is winning, thus handing the title to the Australian?

Vettel, a brash German who publicly feuded with Webber this season, finds himself in an awkward position. Teams are banned from giving “team orders” — telling drivers to let their teammates pass — so it may come down to him voluntarily letting Webber through if the team is to add the Formula One championship to the constructors’ title it has already won.

He wasn’t acting recently like he was ready to give up a victory on Sunday for the sake of the team. To claim the title, Vettel needs to win and hope Alonso is outside the top four. If Vettel is second, both Webber and Alonso need to finish low enough to allow the German to remain at the top.

On Friday, Vettel was fastest in the first practice session, more than a second quicker than his two main championship rivals.

Vettel is third in the overall standings behind Webber and Alonso heading into Sunday’s race.

The German clocked 1 minute, 42.760 seconds around the 5.554-kilometer Yas Marina circuit. Hamilton was second fastest, while defending champion Jenson Button was third and Webber was fourth.

Alonso was sixth fastest in his Ferrari.

“I think the target is clear,” Vettel said. “The speed has been there all season and it hasn’t been the easiest season for myself, but we are still in the hunt and that’s good.

“Try to do my best and it depends where those two guys (Webber and Alonso) are.”

Hamilton’s teammate Button added his voice to the debate, suggesting Vettel should move aside. “I can see, for example, if the two Red Bulls are quick here, first and second, and Vettel’s got the jump on Mark, and Alonso’s in third for example, I would say that Vettel would let Mark past,” Button said.

“That’s not a team order, that’s his decision — if he makes it.”

For his part, Alonso appeared relaxed, insisting tactics were the last thing on his mind.

“I think I will not lose even one second of my energy this weekend thinking of what is going to happen on Sunday afternoon,” the 29-year-old Spaniard said. “There is much more to do Friday, Saturday, preparing the weekend in the right way. And as I said, our only picture at the moment of the race is winning the race.”

A victory for Alonso probably will carry the most controversy of any of the four, since he was the beneficiary of Ferrari using team orders in Germany to allow the Spaniard to pass teammate Felipe Massa, picking up an additional seven points for a win instead of second.

Alonso on Thursday dismissed suggestions that a title would somehow be tainted should he win by seven points or less. “Winning by seven, one, or 25 is the less important thing in my mind right now,” he said. “Being first and second is our only target.”

From Zulhilmi Supaat GUANGZHOU, Nov 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia bagged their first gold medal in the 16th Asian Games here through Chai Fong Ying in wu

Guangzhou - Malaysia bagged their first gold medal in the 16th Asian Games here through Chai Fong Ying in wushu on Day Three of the Games which officially began on Saturday.

Besides this, Malaysia also captured the first silver through Ibrahim Amir who was in action in the 8-Ball Pool Singles final.

After today's competitions involving Malaysians, the national contingent's medal tally stands at one gold, one silver and three bronze, which puts Malaysia in eighth position in the medal standings.

As of 11pm tonight, hosts China lead the medal standings with 53 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze followed by South Korea (18, 13, 18) and Japan (13, 25, 23).

Not only did Fong Ying win the gold, she also successfully defended her Tajijian gold that she won when making her Asian Games debut in Doha, Qatar four years ago.

However, Ng Shin Yi, her compatriot in the event had to be satisfied with fifth placing.

The silver was all the more sweet for the 49-year-old Ibrahim on the personal level as he had returned empty-handed in the last two editions of the Games.

In the final today, Ibrahim lost 4-7 to Kuo Po Cheng of Taiwan. At the Guangzhou Velodrome, national cycling ace Mohd Azizulhasni Awang booked his ticket for tomorrow's semifinal of the men's 200m individual sprint after defeating Hassanali Varposhti of Iran in the quarterfinal.

Dubbed the `The Pocketrocketman', he posted 10.781s in the first sprint and 10.982s in the second to overcome the Iranian.

Tomorrow, Mohd Azizulhasni will be up against Doha gold medallist Zhang Lei of China and two Japanese riders, Kitatsuru Tsubasa and Nitta Yudai.

In the women's event of the same, Fatehah Mustafa failed to advance past the quarterfinal after being defeated by Kim Wongyeong of South Korea.

In the team pursuit, the Malaysian quartet of Mohamad Akmal Amrun, Muhamad Adiq Husainie Othman, Amir Mustafa Rusli and Mohd Rizal Tisin lost to the Iranian team but managed to rewrite the national record in the event.

The Malaysians' time was four minutes 18.596 seconds while the Iranians did 4:15.225s.

Team manager Datuk Naim Mohamad said the 4:18.596s erased the old mark of 4:20s set by the same four at the World Championship in Beijing in January.

Meanwhile, the national football squad bid goodbye to the Games when they lost 1-3 to defending champions Iran in the knockout stage.

Though without key players because of injuries and red cards, K.Rajagobal's boys can take pride that they gave a good account of themselves

Tomorrow, though the Malaysian contingent will be celebrating Aidiladha, which is celebrated here one day earlier than Malaysia, there will be no let up in the quest to meet the nine-gold target that has been set for the team.

Attention will be focused on Mohd Azizulhasni and Malaysian tenpin bowlers Shalin Zulkifli, Esther Cheah and Zandra Aziela Ibrahim who will begin the hunt for gold in the women's individual event at the Tianhe Bowling Alley.

The men's and women's badminton squads will also be starting their campaigns in the individual events at the Tianhe Stadium tomorrow.
