Victory against Philippines arises RI`s pride

Makassar, S Sulawesi - Indonesia`s victory against the Philippines team in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup`s semifinal on Sunday evening had arisen the nation`s pride, a former soccer player said.

The victory did not only paved the way for the national soccer team to get the final match ticket but it was also a momentum for every Indonesian to appreciate their country, Abdi Tunggal said.

"This victory has enabled us to forget the problems we are facing as a nation for a moment. I think the victory has arisen the spirit of nationalism due to our players` heroic struggle," he said.

This former striker of PSM (Makassar Soccer Club) said the Indonesian public support was so spectacular as shown by the flocks of soccer enthusiasts at the stadium in Jakarta.

"This is an indication that our people are no longer ashamed to show their concrete support for our national team," he said.

Sharing Abdi Tunggal`s opinion, Husain Abdullah, another soccer enthusiast, said the Indonesian team`s victory had united the entire nation regardless of the existing economic, legal and political problems.

"We put our problems aside for a moment, like the Gayus corruption case. Today (Sunday), we celebrate our victory happily. May our thirst for the championship be gained by beating Malaysia in the final match," he said.

Indonesian soccer team`s striker Christian Gonzales said he was ready to score goals in the final match of the AFF Suzuki Cup with Malaysia on December 26 and 29.

"I am always ready if my coach picked me," he told newsmen after playing in the second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup`s semifinal.

The only goal that secured Indonesia`s victory was made by Gonzales, naturalized Indonesian citizen married to an Indonesian.

In the first leg, Indonesia also defeated the Philippines with one goal also scored by Gonzales who came from Uruguay.

He said he would always do his best to bring victory to his team at anytime. But, his success in scoring goals was actually the result of a solid team work, he said.

"I cannot score goals if there is no solid support from the other players. Therefore scoring goals is the result of all players` hard work," said the naturalized playmaker who once played for Persib Bandung.

Gonzales who married Eva Siregar was publicly regarded as the one who had brought the national team to the grand final match due to be held in Malaysia on December 26 and in Indonesia on December 29.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who watched the semifinal match at Bung Karno soccer stadium here Sunday evening praised the Indonesian soccer team`s victory and spectacular performance.

However, the head of state urged the Indonesian players to focus on their final match with Malaysia.

"Don`t be inattentive. Keep concentrating on the final match with Malaysia," he said.
The head of state called on the entire nation to pray for the national team`s victory in two legs of the final match.

President Yudhoyono said the government promised the national team members a token of appreciation.

The AFF committee decided that the two legs of the Indonesia-the Philippines` semifinals will be held at Bung Karno soccer stadium because the AFF regarded the Philippines` soccer stadium to meet the international standards.(*)

South Korea Captain Ji-sung to Retire After AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011

Seoul - Korea Republic captain Park Ji-sung has planned to end his national team career after the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said in its news report issued here last night.

Quoting the Korean and Manchester United ace's father Park Sung-jong, the report said the continental showpiece in Qatar would be his last for the national team.

"Ji-sung, 29, said before the FIFA World Cup in South Africa that the Asian Cup would be his last national tournament," the senior Park said.

"Now, ahead of the Asian Cup, there is no reason for him to change his mind."

Park said his son wanted to give more chances to young players.

"Ji-sung said 'when I give way, players like Lee Chung-yong will appear. They don't have to think I should be there'.

Health issue was another compelling reason for him to retire after the finals in Qatar.

Park said travelling around the globe to play international matches for Korea has affected him and he also wants to focus on his club more.

Ji-sung will be back in Korea for training for the AFC Asian Cup after playing the league match against Sunderland on December 27.

His national teammate Yeam Ki-hoon, who plays for Suwon Bluewings, said, "I hope he changes his mind as he is a very important player for Korean national team."

Chunnam's 19-year-old player Ji Dong-won said, "He is still a very good player. I am also able to learn a lot from him. So, I wish he stays in the national team." (QNA)

Gulf Cup to Be Inaugurated for First Time in Yemen Tonight

Aden - The Gulf Football Cup will be inaugurated officially in Yemen Monday evening by Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The 20th Gulf Cup, hosted in Yemen for the first time since its accession to some GCC institutions nine years ago, will take place from November 21st up to December 5th 2010. The inauguration will also be attended by President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh and President of Eritrea Isaias Afewerki, in addition to heads of the participating delegations in the championship. The Yemeni team will face in the opening the Saudi team, three time champions of the Cup which begun in Bahrain 40 years ago. In the Second match, which will start 10 pm local time (7GMT), Qatar will play Kuwait. Yemen invested almost $1 billion to prepare for the Cup by building new stadiums and Hotels. Yemen''s Interior Minister Mutahar al-Masri said the two-week event involving eight teams from the GCC, Yemen and Iraq will be "100% safe," and the military has deployed extra 30,000 troops to Aden and Abyan. The first Gulf Cup was inaugurated on March 27, 1970, by the Emir of Bahrain with four national teams; Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain. It began when the Bahrain Football Association adopted this idea under the chairmanship of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa who travelled as the head of a delegation from Bahrain to Mexico during a session of the Mexico City Olympics in 1968, and introduced the idea to the Stanley Rouse, President of world football body then. In February 1969, Rouse visited Bahrain, where he met the then Governor of Bahrain, Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. Rouse expressed his support and welcomed it strongly on the grounds that the Gulf region did not have the opportunity to participate in any tournaments and international competitions. Rouse agreed upon the establishment of this tournament and the team of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain participated in it. Qatar participated with special exception from the president of FIFA since it was not a member of International Federation of Football during those days but it received a temporary membership to take part in the event. The preliminary meeting for the Gulf Cup was held under the chairmanship of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Football Association on June 19, 1969 in the municipality of Bahrain and in the presence of representatives of associations of the four Gulf states. It was agreed to hold the first Gulf Cup in March 1970 in Bahrain, as the amendable draft was approved. The draft which was approved, included the objectives of the tournament, namely to raise interest in sport, raise the level football in the Gulf states and provide the opportunity for closer ties of fraternity and friendship between the people of the Arabian Gulf. UAE joined the party two years later in 1972, while Oman was participating for the first time in the Kuwait Torment which was held in 1974. In 1976, Iraq participated for the first time and Yemen was for the first time 8 years ago.(QNA)
