Sports Minister concerned about PSSI congress deadlock

Yogyakarta - Youth and Sports Minister Andi Malarangeng has expressed concern about the chaotic situation that happened at the National Football Association (PSSI) congress last Friday (May 20).

"I am sorry that the congress failed to elect a new chairman due to the chaotic situation at the meeting," he said here on Saturday.

The minister said he kept hoping that FIFA would not impose a sanction on Indonesia for taking too long to solve PSSI`s internal problem.

"We as the government will communicate with the Indonesian Sports Council (KONI) and FIFA to find the best solution to this problem," he said.

Earlier, the body controlling football globally, FIFA (International Federation of Football Associations), decided to form a Normalization Committee that would take over the task of organizing a congress from the PSSI`s executive board to elect a new PSSI chairman on May 21, 2011.

FIFA took the decision after its Emergency Committee believed that the PSSI leadership under chairman Nurdin Khalid was not in control of football in Indonesia as proven by its failure to control the run-away league (Liga Premiere/LPI) set up without the involvement of PSSI or by the fact it could not organize a peaceful congress whose sole goals were to adopt an electoral code and elect an electoral commission.

The FIFA Emergency Committee therefore came to the conclusion that the PSSI leadership had lost all its credibility in Indonesia and was no longer in a position to solve the current crisis.

The mission of the Normalization Committee is to organize an election based on the FIFA electoral code and PSSI statutes before May 21, 2011; to bring the run-away league under PSSI control or have it stopped as soon as possible; to run the day-to-day activities of PSSI in a spirit of reconciliation for the good of football in Indonesia. Indonesia optimistic to beat Russia in Sudirman Cup

Qindao, China - The Indonesian team is optimistic it could beat Russia in the first round of Group B in the Sudirman Cup Badminton Championship here on Sunday.

Its manager Hadi Nazri said when seeing his players conducting an exercise here on Saturday he felt optimistic the team could beat Russia in the opening round.

However he declined to promise that Simon Santoso and his fellows could win a landslide over Russia. "The Russian players are also good and we dare not targeting a landslide victory because they have strong female players," he said.

"We would take points from the men`s group because I saw they have good players in the women`s team," he said.

Hadi said group matches are different from individual matches. "I think we can take points from the men`s events including mix doubles," he said.

He said the match against Russia on Sunday would begin with mixed doubles followed by men`s single, men`s doubles, women`s singles and women`s doubles.

Indonesia in the mixed doubles plans to field Frans Kurniawan Teng/Pia Zebadiah, who would meet Durkin Vitalij/Nina Vasilova and Bona Septano/Muhammad Ahsan to meet Durkin Vitalij/Nikolav Alexander.

In the women`s singles event it will field Ardiyanto Firdasari who would meet with Bibik Tadjana while in the women`s doubles Meliana Jauhari/Gresya Polii to meet Serena Valeria/Nina Vasilova.

Unlike before where men`s single event is always played first this time it will be started with mixed doubles because there is a player that has to play twice and women`s doubles event as the closing game.

Russian Nina Vasilova also has to play in the mixed doubles besides playing in a women`s single event.

The director of national training center, Christian Hadinata, meanwhile said although theoretically Indonesia would win the team still needs to be careful.

"I am not too familiar with Russian players but I remember one good player namely Anastasia Rassukh who used to play in pair with Hendra Aprida Gunawan.

"We must remain careful in the first match. We theoretically will win but we must be careful," the former top men`s double player said. (H-YH/HAJM/H-YH)

Barcelona race in doubt for Pedrosa after broken collarbone

Following Dani Pedrosa’s crash in Sunday’s Monster Energy Grand Prix de France, the Repsol Honda rider was admitted yesterday to the Clínica Teknon, where new tests confirmed a neat fracture of his right collarbone.

Pedrosa returned to Barcelona immediately after the race with the x-ray scans from the Le Mans circuit medical centre. The Spaniard visited his doctors at Teknon Medical Centre and further medical tests confirmed a clean break of the right collarbone.

The 25 year old spent the night in the hospital, immobilised with a compressive dressing and will decide in the next few days if he will undergo surgery to repair the fracture with a new plate, or let the bone heal itself without intervention. In either case, his presence in the Grand Prix of Catalunya, to be held on June 5th, is uncertain.

Rossi on track at Silverstone

Valentino Rossi joined other great motorsports champions from the past and present in an inauguration ceremony for a new, ultramodern paddock structure at England’s Silverstone Circuit. The Silverstone Wing, as the British venue’s enormous new facility is called, comprises spacious garages, a media center, offices, and an auditorium, and it will host the seventh round of the MotoGP world championship on June 12.

Rossi, who missed the track’s 2010 round due to injury, used the occasion to turn some introductory laps with a World Superbike 1198 and, while that bike was in the garage for a check of its electronics, with a standard 1198 street bike, complete with license plate and mirrors. The Italian greatly enjoyed his track time—about thirty laps in all—as a way to get to know the circuit.

“I really had fun,” said Valentino Rossi before leaving for Italy. “After a few laps with the 1198 Superbike, we had a problem with the electronics and decided to use the 1198 street bike that Ducati’s UK affiliate rushed to us. I really liked riding that bike here. The track is nice—difficult and very technical. It makes you work hard because there are very fast sections where having the right trajectory is important, and others that are very narrow where you have to have good grip under acceleration. The first turn is completely blind, and you must hold a very precise line, and in general the entire first section is really great, definitely the part I like most. In short, I enjoyed it, especially because there were many drivers and riders who have great histories in motorsports, like John Surtees, who told me that he raced here in the ’50s. I wasn’t following racing then,” joked the Italian, “but he was great.”
