Stoner Clinches Incident-Filled French Race With Fierce Fightback

Le Mans, France. Casey Stoner won the French MotoGP on Sunday in a fourth leg of the season that proved costly for his Honda teammate, Dani Pedrosa, and Honda privateer team rider Marco Simoncelli.

Pedrosa had produced a flying start off the second row on the grid watched by a record 88,000-crowd to grab the lead from pole-sitter Stoner.

But Stoner wasted no time in reclaiming the advantage, with world champion Jorge Lorenzo on his Yamaha tracking them. Honda Gresini rider Simoncelli then made a forward move, surging past Lorenzo to third.

By the midway point, Stoner, winner of the season opener in Qatar, had pulled over two seconds clear of Pedrosa, the Spaniard who had shrugged off shoulder surgery to win in Estoril early this month.

Pedrosa’s race then ended spectacularly with 11 laps remaining after a high-speed crash as he dueled with Simoncelli, who had nipped past him only for Pedrosa’s front wheel to then clip the Italian’s bike. Pedrosa reportedly broke his right collarbone.

Simoncelli did not escape from the spat scot-free as he incurred a ride-through penalty for what race stewards considered an illegal maneuver on Pedrosa, resulting in him dropping down from second to sixth.

Valentino Rossi has had a quiet start to the season but the Ducati star was the main beneficiary of Simoncelli’s punishment, with the multiple former champion inheriting second place.

Rossi eventually came in third for his first podium under a new team, with Italian Andrea Dovizioso chasing Stoner across the line, 14 seconds adrift, in third. Stoner moved up to second place in the overall standings on 66 points, a dozen points behind Lorenzo, with Pedrosa in third with 61.

French hopes of glory in the home grand prix were carried by Ducati’s Randy de Puniet, who started from 11th but only made it as far as the second lap before crashing into the safety gravel.

Britain’s MotoGP rookie, Cal Crutchow, who had qualified in sixth, also bowed out prematurely after a spill on his Yamaha. (Agence France-Presse)

Vettel Tops Spanish GP For 4th Win of Season

Barcelona - Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel held off closest championship contender Lewis Hamilton for his fourth victory of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Red Bull driver took the lead for good after the second round of pit stops to edge Hamilton by 0.6 seconds and widen his advantage atop the standings to 41 points over his McLaren rival.

Vettel’s fourth win in five races this season was the first in 11 GPs at the Catalunya Circuit from a driver not starting on pole — and only the fifth non-pole winner in 21 races at Barcelona.

Vettel lost use of his KERS speed boost and Hamilton snuggled in right behind him, but the German driver clung to his slim lead over the last dozen laps.

“A lot of people said today wouldn’t be a race — that’s why I’m even more happy we made it,” Vettel said. “The last 10 laps I felt tires going away and I was praying. On top of that sometimes KERS on, sometimes KERS off. It wasn’t an easy race. But it was a great result and confirmation we are very strong.”

Red Bull teammate Mark Webber surrendered pole position to finish fourth behind Jenson Button of McLaren, while Fernando Alonso of Ferrari led for the first 18 laps before settling for fifth in the hot conditions.

Vettel’s first Spanish win increased his overall total to 118 points after five races with Hamilton remaining the closest challenger with 77 points, and Webber third on 67 points. Alonso remained fifth in the standings with 51 points — 10 behind fourth-place Button — despite a gutsy start in front of his home crowd.

Alonso steamed up the inside past the top three to lead into the first corner, with Webber’s concern over the Spaniard allowing Vettel to go around his teammate from the outside to stay second.

Alonso held his lead for 18 laps until the second round of stops when the Ferrari driver re-emerged behind Vettel and Hamilton and ahead of Webber, who engaged Alonso in a number of overtaking swaps but couldn’t get ahead until after the final round of stops.

“Fernando was holding the two Red Bulls up so I was able to keep with them,” said Hamilton, the only other race winner this season. “We can’t be disappointed with today.”

Button stayed out as the leaders went in for a third tire change and the McLaren driver’s better grip allowed him to get past Webber and Alonso into third by the halfway point. Button, the 2009 winner here, built enough of an advantage and was the only car among the top-5 not to go on a three-stop strategy.

“My first lap was a disaster,” said Button, who dropped from fifth to 11th out of the start. “But I was able to pick them off with a fantastic strategy.”

Button and Webber finished within 50 seconds of Vettel, while Alonso and the rest of the field were lapped by the top-two. (Paul Logothetis)

RI climbers reach Mt McKinley peak

Jakarta - A team of Indonesian climbers on Sunday conquered the 6,194 meter-high Mount Denali/McKinley in Alaska, USA - the fifth of seven of the world`s highest mountains they had planned to scale.

The climbers set their foot on the highest mountain peak in North America and the US at 09.15 p.m. local time on Sunday or 12.15 western Indonesian time on Monday and promptly put up the red-and-white national flag there, the Secretariat of Seven Summits in Jakarta said on Tuesday.

Only four of the five core climbers managed to reach the peak. They were Fajri Al Lutfi, Iwan Irawan, Martin Rimbawan and Nurhuda, it said.

The other core climber, Ardhesir Yaftebbi, along with a guide returned to vase camp to accompany Metro TV journalist Popo Nurakhman who had difficulties when the team reached an altitude of 5,900 meters above sea level, it said.

The secretariat said the climbers started climbing the mountain on Tuesday (May 2). Because of bad weather they were confined to Camp 3 at a height of 4,328 meters above sea level until Thursday (May 12).

As the weather was improving they continued climbing the mountain and set up High Camp at a height of 5,242 meters above sea level. On Sunday (May 15) they reached the Denali peak following 15 days of climbing.

The weather was cloudy with the wind reaching 10 mph when the climbers reached the Denali peak. Yet they could not stay there any longer because they had to make their descent , the secretariat said.

All the climbers arrived back at High Camp at 04.15 a.m. local time on Sunday. They were expected to arrive at Talkeetna on Thursday (May 19), it said.

By conquering the Denali/McKinley peak, the climbers still have two of the world`s seven highest mountains to climb. They are the 4,897-meter-high Mount Vinson Massif in Antartica and 8,850-meter high Mount Everest in Nepal. The team will conclude their two-and-a-half year expedition in May 2012. (S012//HAJM/s012)
