South Africa not to bid for 2020 Olympics

Johannesburg: South Africa's Olympic committee president ruled out a bid for the 2020 Summer Games yesterday after the government said it was not the right time.

Gideon Sam told The Associated Press that his committee would only bid if the government gave its backing, and that the project "was off the radar for now" after South Africa's cabinet said it preferred to focus on national priorities.

"Our position is very clear," Sam said. "We would bid only if the government gives the go-ahead."

Asked if he was ruling out a bid from a South African city for 2020, Sam replied, "Definitely."

Other possible contenders include Tokyo (Japan), Madrid (Spain), Turkey (Istanbul), Doha (Qatar) and Dubai (UAE). The host city will be selected by the IOC in 2013.

Earlier, South Africa's government said it was not the right time for the country — which successfully hosted Africa's first soccer World Cup last year — to bid for the Olympics.

"Cabinet considered the request by the South African Sports Federation for the country to bid for the hosting of the 2020 Olympic Games," the statement said.

"Cabinet has decided that it is better for the country to consolidate the gains of the 2010 Fifa World Cup for now and rather focus the country's attention to the delivery of basic services to all South Africans."

Sam said South Africa might reconsider a bid for another Olympics "some time in the future".

Agum promises sanctions to PSSI congress troublemakers

Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) Normalization Committee chairman Agum Gumelar has promised to give sanctions to troublemakers that made last Friday’s congress fail to elect new PSSI chairman.

“We are still the acting organizers of PSSI. Regarding your suggestion to give punishment to the troublemakers, we are processing it,” Agum told legislators during a hearing on Tuesday evening as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The PSSI congress ended in a deadlock as Group 78 insisted on nominating George Toisutta and Arifin Panigoro as PSSI chairman although the two hopefuls’ nomination has been rejected by a PSSI appeal committee. The appeal committee decision was later upheld by FIFA.

FIFA is expected to announce its decision on May 30 whether or not to punish Indonesia following the chaotic PSSI congress.

Group 78 to consult with minister, FIFA

After a deadlock at the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) congress, the controversial Group 78 said on Sunday that they would consult with the State Minister for Youth and Sports Affairs, Andi Mallarangeng, and FIFA to resolve the PSSI leadership problem.

The group also expected there would be no sanction from FIFA.

“We hope our problem will be handled by the new FIFA president, as we thought the current FIFA officials had violated their authority,” PSM Makassar legal director Syahrir Cakkari said on Sunday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Syahrir said FIFA officials had breached their authority by banning four PSSI chairman candidates – George Toisutta, Arifin Panigoro, Nirwan Bakrie and Nurdin Halid – without clear reasons.

He said George and Nirwan should be eligible to run for the PSSI chairmanship.

He did not mind that Nurdin and Arifin were ineligible, as Nurdin was a convict while Arifin held a league outside the leagues recognized by the PSSI.
