Alonso focuses on return to supremacy

If ever a Grand Prix driver was determined to prove his newly-valued worth it was Fernando Alonso with a sensational opening burst on home territory in Spain last Sunday.

He had just been contracted for five more years at Ferrari in a deal probably the richest-ever in Formula One and said to be around £125 million (Dh750 million).

Whether he felt the need to justify the stunning outlay by the men from Maranello or he was merely motivated to prove his prowess we shall never know.

But the Spanish flyer's stupendous opening lap in Barcelona was little short of amazing when he left the illustrious likes of Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton wondering what had hit them until 20 laps or so on when the motor not the motivation let him down so crucially.

Promise

It is impossible to imagine the twice-champion's hurt at being lapped when there was so much promise after his breathtaking burst from the lights-out signal to go.

His hero to zero setback over which he had little or no control has hardly fazed him and, sensibly, he is looking forward to resurrecting his supremacy on Sunday rather than rueing his downfall a week since.

The Spanish Grand Prix was enough of a special personal display of daring and sheer skill to serve warning on his rivals ahead of the upcoming showpiece around the streets of Monaco that he can be a scarily genuine threat to the championship's front runners.

He has twice been a winner and pole sitter in the Principality and his mood to make it three times in each case is clear from his dialogue in the build-up to round six.

Fighting talk

The world title's better-placed runners would do well to heed the 29-year-old's fighting talk as Ferrari's hierarchy revel in his spirit and his promise to go for it. Not just in Monaco — but for the rest of the season and a third F1 world crown.

He is 67 points off the lead but insists: "There is still time to turn the situation around".

He crashed out of the running in Monaco last season, but he dismisses that misfortune with: "Anything can happen on this circuit".

And adds: "I am definitely not thinking of giving up on the championship after just five races.

"For better or worse I was born stubborn and there is time left as long as I have a good car."

Red Bull to change pit procedure

Monaco - Red Bull will change its pitstop procedures during Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix amid concerns that rival Ferrari was doing copycat stops during last week's race in Spain.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner claims Ferrari was mimicking Red Bull in Barcelona because it appeared that two-time former F1 champion Fernando Alonso was pitting for Ferrari immediately after Red Bull had called in Mark Webber.

"Pitstops are all part of the game, and Ferrari's only way to beat Mark was to cover him in the pitstops," Horner said on Wednesday ahead of the first practice session. "So we've changed our procedure this weekend to ensure we are less transparent."

Horner said Red Bull's pit crew gave away signs during the last race that a pitstop was imminent, like "putting their hands in their pockets at the wrong time or somebody was picking a tire up" — and this gave Ferrari an inkling to do likewise. They obviously saw something we were doing that was giving away when we were going to stop and would call in Fernando," Horner said.

"It wasn't coincidence because every time we called Mark in, then Fernando would come down the pit lane, which is quite within the regulations." Defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel of Germany aims for his fifth win of the season in Monaco. The Red Bull driver already has a commanding 41-point lead over McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari has had a tough start, with Alonso securing the team's only podium finish when he finished third at the Turkish Grand Prix.

South Africa not to bid for 2020 Olympics

Johannesburg: South Africa's Olympic committee president ruled out a bid for the 2020 Summer Games yesterday after the government said it was not the right time.

Gideon Sam told The Associated Press that his committee would only bid if the government gave its backing, and that the project "was off the radar for now" after South Africa's cabinet said it preferred to focus on national priorities.

"Our position is very clear," Sam said. "We would bid only if the government gives the go-ahead."

Asked if he was ruling out a bid from a South African city for 2020, Sam replied, "Definitely."

Other possible contenders include Tokyo (Japan), Madrid (Spain), Turkey (Istanbul), Doha (Qatar) and Dubai (UAE). The host city will be selected by the IOC in 2013.

Earlier, South Africa's government said it was not the right time for the country — which successfully hosted Africa's first soccer World Cup last year — to bid for the Olympics.

"Cabinet considered the request by the South African Sports Federation for the country to bid for the hosting of the 2020 Olympic Games," the statement said.

"Cabinet has decided that it is better for the country to consolidate the gains of the 2010 Fifa World Cup for now and rather focus the country's attention to the delivery of basic services to all South Africans."

Sam said South Africa might reconsider a bid for another Olympics "some time in the future".
