Renault confirms Senna

Bruno Senna will drive for Lotus Renault Grand Prix in the Belgian GP at Spa this weekend, the team has announced.

Senna drove in Friday free practice at Hungaroring, where rumours were rife that the team was looking to replace the 34-year-old German with Senna for the rest of the season.

Heidfeld was an 11th hour replacement for the injured Robert Kubica, taking the seat alongside Vitaly Petrov just before the start of the season. He currently lies eighth in the drivers' championship, one place and two points ahead of the Russian, who is understood to bring substantial backing to the team.

At the moment, Senna's race drive applies just to Spa and Heidfeld is said to be investigating legal channels to hang onto the driver for the remainder of the year.

Warwick confirmed as BRDC president

Derek Warwick has been elected president of the British Racing Drivers Club, succeeding Damon Hill.

Speaking at today's annual general meeting, Warwick said: "First and foremost I would like to thank Damon for the loyalty and commitment he has shown to the BRDC during his time as President. He steered us through some difficult, but ultimately successful times and my aim is to continue where he left off.

"The BRDC and Silverstone face an exciting future. We now have a 21st century race circuit with 21st century facilities; over the next 5-10 years we have the opportunity to continue developing Silverstone into the best motor sport venue in the world.

"The immediate focus is on securing third party investment in Silverstone, to realise the full potential of the 760 acre estate. While the President is a non-voting member of the BRDC Board, I will continue to work closely with the Board as we seek and consider opportunities with suitable third parties.

Reflecting on his time as BRDC president and Warwick's appointment, Damon Hill said: "I would like to express my gratitude to the BRDC for having had me as their President, and for all that it has done to help make my term as fruitful and enjoyable as possible.

"The task of securing the British Grand Prix for Great Britain, through the continued development of Silverstone as the rightful and only viable venue for the British Grand Prix, has been the preoccupation of my Presidency by necessity. However, I hope I have also been successful in reminding the Club of its original purpose, which has been to promote the benefits and positive attributes of our sport to the widest audience, and also to strengthen relations within the sport for the benefit of all concerned."

BRDC chairman Stuart Rolt said: "The BRDC board was unanimous in its support for Derek and we are delighted that he has been elected to take over from Damon. In Derek we have another hugely experienced, yet down to earth, genuine racer. The Club will continue to go from strength to strength."

Lorenzo Needs Magic to Close Gap on Stoner

Laguna Seca, California - MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo has long been inspired by Laguna Seca and its infamous Corkscrew turn and he will be banking on that special spur when he defends his US Grand Prix title this week.

With nine races left this season, the 24-year-old Spaniard trails Australian Casey Stoner by 15 points in the overall standings and would dearly love to trim that deficit further with another triumphant display on Sunday.

Lorenzo made up some ground on Stoner when he snatched second place for Yamaha at last week’s German Grand Prix, one place better than the Australian.

“We are very strong at the moment and we will try to continue to reduce our gap behind Casey,” Lorenzo said on Friday.

“I have had great moments at Laguna Seca, above all last year when I won but also in 2009 when I got pole position even with a big crash and at the end got a podium.”

Two years ago, Lorenzo took pole position despite crashing and partially dislocating his collar bone in qualifying. He finished the race third behind winner Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi after a gutsy performance.

Twelve months ago, the Spaniard again started on pole but this time he benefited from a spectacular crash by compatriot Pedrosa on lap 12 before powering across the finish line 3.517 seconds ahead of Ducati’s Stoner.

“That win was very special,” Lorenzo said of his 11th MotoGP triumph. “Winning at Laguna Seca was something I’d always dreamed of.”

Lorenzo is certain, though, to face heated competition on Sunday from 2007 US Grand Prix champion Stoner and Pedrosa.

“It’s a circuit I’ve always enjoyed quite good results at and we’ve always been naturally quite fast on it,” said Stoner, who has finished on the podium in his last seven races. “We’ll be looking to improve our results from the past three weekends. Podiums are great but I’m here to win races.”

Pedrosa, who sealed his return from injury by winning the German Grand Prix on Sunday, is another long-time fan of Laguna Seca, which is scenically laid out in rolling hills overlooking the Monterey Peninsula.

“The atmosphere there is special and I’d like to close the first part of the season with a good feeling,” the 25-year-old said. Reuters
