Dovizioso storms to first Yamaha podium in Catalunya

The Italian rider produced a display full of skill and determination in the early stages of the 25-lap race after he'd swept into third place on the third lap. It was a position Dovizioso wasn't to relinquish for the remainder of the race.

Cal Crutchlow started from the front row of the grid for the third time this season and like in Jerez and Le Mans, the 26-year-old produced an epic effort to try and secure his maiden MotoGP rostrum. Crutchlow shadowed Stoner throughout but despite piling on the pressure he couldn't force the Australian into making a mistake and he settled for fifth place. Crutchlow remains in the top five in the overall World Championship rankings heading to his home race at Silverstone on June 7.

Andrea Dovizioso
"I am really happy to get my first podium for Yamaha and this is a fantastic reward for all the effort my Monster Yamaha Tech 3 crew has put in since I came to this Team. We have been building up to this result for a while now, but it is great to be battling at the front in MotoGP on a satellite machine and I'm sure nobody expected us to be doing this so early. Now we can go to Silverstone with a lot of confidence."

Cal Crutchlow
"I'd have liked to have battled for the podium at the end and I think if I could have passed Casey I could have gone with Andrea. I was strong in some parts of the track and Casey in others, so each time I'd close up, he would be able to pull away and manage the gap. I couldn't do anything else to get by him but he's not the World Champion for nothing. Now I'm really looking forward to my home race at Silverstone where I hope to be battling for the podium again in front of my own fans."

Hervé Poncharal – Team Manager
"Today was a fantastic advert for MotoGP with exciting races in all three classes and for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team it was obviously fantastic to be on the podium. We have been very close to this result before this season but it is so difficult to finish in the top three when you have Casey, Dani and Jorge lining up on the grid."

Taiwanese teen romance wins HK Film Award

Taipei - Taiwanese box-office hit "You are the Apple of My Eye" won in a new category introduced this year at the 31st Hong Kong Film Awards, taking the title of "Best Film of Mainland (China) and Taiwan."

The low-budget film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by popular Taiwanese author Giddens Ko and is set in his hometown of Chanhua County in central Taiwan.

It beat four other Taiwanese and Chinese blockbusters -- The Flowers of War, If You Are the One 2, Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale and Starry Starry Night -- to win the newly introduced Best Film of Mainland and Taiwan award.

Lead actors Ko Chen-tung and Michelle Chen, along with the rest of the main cast, attended the glitzy award presentation ceremony at the harbor-front Hong Kong Cultural Center.

The film tells the story of five high school boys striving to win the heart of classmate Shen Chia-yi, played by Michelle Chen.

The retro coming-of-age drama emerged as an instant box-office success in Taiwan upon its release last year, appealing to audiences of all ages.

It was the third best-selling film in Taiwan`s history, with NT$460 million (about US$16 million) in ticket sales. It broke four box-office records on its opening days in Hong Kong and has since become the best-selling Mandarin film ever screened there.

The movie has also generated a buzz in the rest of the Chinese-speaking world, including several Southeast Asian countries.

Noted Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao, who rose to stardom through a TV reality show, won the award for best new performer for his role in "The Killer Who Never Kills", which is also based on a popular novel by Giddens Ko. (T.A045/H-AK)

"The Avengers" smashes opening weekend box office record

Los Angeles - "The Avengers" has scored the biggest opening weekend North America box office history with an astonishing 200.3 million US dollars in estimated ticket sales, marking a start of Hollywood's summer season.

The previous record was 169.2 million US dollars set by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" last year. Although "The Avengers" did not manage to break the opening day record by the Harry Potter finale, it finished strong to set the highest gross. It has earned an A-plus grade as measured by the Cinemascan service.

The Marvel Studios film, released by Walt Disney Co, is on track to have sold 641 million dollars in tickets across the world, according to studio estimates gathered by Hollywood.com.

Box office analyst for Hollywood.com Paul Dergerabedian said " This is the biggest North American opening weekend debut in box office history and sets a new benchmark in what is possible in terms of theatrical revenue generation."

The film, directed by Joss Whedon, brings together super heroes of several prior Marvel blockbusters, including Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and Thor. It has the star attractions, staring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Disney opened the film first in other countries, setting opening weekend records in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Philippines, building anticipation before it was released in North America.

Hit by the blockbuster, other films performed poorly at this weekend box office.

"Think Like A Man", which held the top spot over the past two weekends, was in second place with 8 million dollars and a three- week total of 73 million dollars.

And the previous big hit of the year, "The Hunger Games," was the third with 5.7 million dollars, bringing its domestic sales over seven weeks to 380.7 million dollars.

Rounding out the five top movies in the North America this weekend were "The Lucky One" (5.5 million dollars) and "Pirates, The Band Of Misfits" (5.4 million dollars). (A045/H-AK)
