Positive steps in Mugello test for Repsol Honda Team

The Honda factory team were back on track this morning to test a new engine and a new prototype that HRC has developed, aiming improve performance of the RC213V. Dani Pedrosa did 51 laps with a best time of 1'47.549, two tenths under the circuit record he set in Sunday's race (1'47.705) and Casey Stoner completed 47 laps with a fastest time of 1'47.551, just two thousandths off his team mate.

Dani Pedrosa
"We tested many things today and I'm happy because we found some positives with the new engine and also with the new chassis that can help us in the second part of the season. I was really hoping for some improvements after the issues we have had with the extra weight, chattering and the front tyres and in this test we made a step forward. Honda is working very hard and I'm sure they will do their best to be able to supply us the new parts for Laguna and the following races, but we'll see if it's possible with the engine allocations; anyway, it would be very good for us. The engine is better into the corner, the engine brake is smoother and the bike is not so sharp when you close the throttle, so this helps you to get into the corner. I made my best lap time on my current bike; it's normal as I'm used to it. With the new bike I made a mistake shifting gears and I had a small crash on my third lap, so I couldn't do a longer run, but the feeling was also positive."

Casey Stoner
"We had a new engine and new chassis to test today. With the engine we found some improvements, a little smoother and some more power. As far as chassis goes I didn't find any real benefits, we tried many different things but couldn't get a better feeling. There were a few small areas that improved but nothing in terms of performance or for the lap time, just a marginally better feeling under braking. It wasn't really the test we were looking for, we had hoped to find something to help us get rid of the chatter and give us some more feeling in the middle of the corner but unfortunately we didn't find this. If we can have the new engine with the current chassis, it's the best combination, but we're not sure if we can have it in time for Laguna Seca, we'll have to wait and see."

Pedrosa fastest on day one with Stoner third at Laguna Seca

Pedrosa fully utilised his new specification RC213V with updated engine and chassis to lap three-tenths under the circuit record. His best lap time was 1'21.088, while Stoner, who also worked with the new engine but mounted on the 'standard' chassis, recorded a fastest lap of 1'21.457.

Dani Pedrosa
"We did a good job today, we managed to get a good lap time in the morning and improved it in the afternoon, although the grip level was very poor and we struggled a bit with the rear. The tyres were working a little better in the afternoon, but it was hard to work on the consistency due to the lack of grip. I hope to be able to work on the pace tomorrow to prepare the race. The new bike is working good here, I will continue working on the set up tomorrow."

Casey Stoner
"It hasn't been a particularly eventful day, we didn't really get the package we were hoping for. We struggled a little this morning with stability on the soft tyre; we improved it slightly this afternoon on the hard tyre but found the bike to be quite aggressive and there wasn't much grip. We have a few things to try tomorrow morning; if we can make some small improvements then we'll be very happy with the bike. As it is now, we need to improve before we can say if we're competitive or not."

Dovizioso and Crutchlow off to solid start in California

Dovizioso, who is chasing a fourth consecutive podium finish in Sunday's 32-lap race, finished with a best time of 1.22.021 that kept him fifth position and he was the fastest non-factory rider to lap the challenging Laguna Seca track, which features the jaw-dropping Corkscrew section.

British rider Crutchlow also enjoyed a satisfactory start to his preparations for round 10 of the 2012 MotoGP World Championship. Crutchlow had finished just 0.063s behind Dovizioso this morning and he was pushing hard to improve his pace in the second session when he fell heavily at Turn 10. He returned to the track for the final 10 minutes and he improved his lap time to a 1.22.258 that put him in sixth position on the combined leader board.

Andrea Dovizioso
"It has been a positive start to the weekend, but the gap to the front is quite big. The second session was a bit strange because after the red flag there was a lot of traffic on track in the final stages and it was hard to get a clear lap in. I could have possibly done the same time as Ben (Spies) but certainly not the low 21s the top three were doing. My aim for this afternoon was to get closer to Ben and we managed that. I was almost 0.7s behind him this morning but only 0.3s this afternoon, so that is a good step forward."

Cal Crutchlow
"Today didn't really go according to plan because this afternoon I had a silly crash. It was my own fault and we have to look at the data to fully understand what happened. I didn't feel I did anything different in that corner to other laps but we will have to check. I've got a small cut on my right leg but fortunately nothing worse because it was a fast crash. I am still reasonably happy because I was able to go back out again and gain a bit of time and in both sessions I was inside the top six, so we are pretty competitive. We need to calm the bike down a little bit but I will sit down with my crew tonight and come up with a plan that I'm sure will help me stay challenging inside the top six for the rest of the weekend."
