Dovizioso thrilled to put Ducati fourth on grid

For 2013, Dovizioso has moved to the Ducati factory outfit from Monster Yamaha Tech 3. It looked as though he has achieved a respectable third place result until he was demoted by Repsol Team’s Dani Pedrosa in the last knockings of the new Q2.

“I didn’t expect to do a 55.1!” Dovizioso smiled when discussing his session in a motogp.com video interview. “It’s really fast and I’m so happy because, when I pushed really hard with the tyres on the last lap, I had a really good feeling with it and that was really good to experience. We had a few problems with the front, but the track improved a little bit and the wind was blowing in the opposite direction it had been in all of the practice sessions, which helped everybody to improve.”

Yet to complete a long run at the Losail International Circuit, the Italian admits that doubt remain but is still heading into race night with much optimism.

“I don’t know what to expect with the race because we haven’t done a long run and we don’t know how the tyres will drop off over 22 laps,” he continued. “That’s a big question mark but, anyway, to be so close to (pole-sitter Jorge) Lorenzo is really good and I’m really happy with the job we’ve done this weekend. We’re improving step-by-step, especially with the electronics system, and we got to qualifying with a really good setup – so I’m really happy with the job the team has done.”

Teammate Nicky Hayden also reached Q2 and will start from 11th position.

Rossi achieves ‘dream’ podium result in Qatar

After a tough qualifying session after which he was seventh, Rossi enjoyed a strong start to the race but an early error at Turn 1 saw him drop back to seventh once again. He proceeded to catch and pass rivals one by one, finishing with Repsol Honda Team duo Dani Pedrosa and Marc Márquez.

“I’m more than happy,” Rossi told motogp.com. “I’m very, very, very happy because it was my dream to come back with the Yamaha and be on the podium in the first race. That has been my target since November and I put all my effort into being here.

“It was a difficult weekend, especially yesterday in practice, but I knew I had great pace. I tried to recover at the beginning but I made a mistake and lost time, so I had to have a good second part to the race because I knew I had very good pace. Step-by-step I came back, close to my podium!

“In the end I had a great battle with Marc for second place. I’m so happy: for me, all of my friends and my fans who have had to suffer two difficult season. Also for Yamaha, which starts the season with first and second places – so not bad!”

Rossi now heads to Austin, Texas five points in arrears of championship-leading teammate Jorge Lorenzo, as the pair carry 20 and 25 points respectively.

Márquez ‘learns a lot’ chasing top rivals

Márquez qualified sixth but a poor start saw the reigning Moto2™ World Champion drop to eighth place off the line. His recovery involved the 20-year-old rising to as high as second position, battling with Repsol Honda Team teammate Dani Pedrosa as well as multiple world champion Valentino Rossi. After the race, the Catalan rider admitted to having learned much while following his rivals.

"To tell the truth, I was pretty nervous on the grid because it was my first MotoGP race," he said bluntly. "I don't think I've ever been so nervous before. I found it hard to keep calm and I wasn't as focused as in Moto2.

"However, I regained my concentration at the last moment. The start was important and we knew that we were taking off from the dirty part of the track. I didn't get off well, but I was able to attack on the opening laps and overtake many riders - I think that was the key.

"When I rode behind Dani I learnt a lot, also later on with Valentino. Fighting against him is always nice to watch, but it's always tough at the same time. Valentino was a tough rival to overtake on the final laps. He beat us this time, but we hope to learn from him and from everyone who went faster than us."

Márquez heads to Texas third in the world championship, having collected 16 points for third place. During the pre-season, he was fastest in Circuit of the Americas testing.
