Coaches hail Del Piero display

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero took the plaudits after guiding his team to a superb 2-0 Champions League victory over Real Madrid in the Bernabeu.

Del Piero netted two superb strikes to down the Spanish giants and was afforded a standing ovation when he was substituted in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Juve coach, Claudio Ranieri, beamed: "The Spanish fans are fantastic and when they see a champion - and Alex didn't just score the two goals, he sacrificed himself for the team - they appreciate it.

"Del Piero took the team on to his shoulders and carried them forward. He was fantastic and is really taking on the role of the captain.

"Congratulations to the Madrid fans who gave him a standing ovation. It was fully deserved, a great gesture."

Real coach Bernd Schuster was also impressed by the response from the home side's fans, adding: "I enjoyed the ovation given to Alessandro Del Piero because he is a great player, he has proved his class and the Bernabeu recognised this fact."

Redknapp sparks Tottenham resurgence

by Mark Pettit

The transformation in Tottenham Hotspur FC since their opening UEFA Cup group stage defeat by Udinese Calcio could spell bad news for NK Dinamo Zagreb tonight, with the London club rejuvenated under Harry Redknapp.

Ramos replaced
The 2-0 reverse in northern Italy proved to be Juande Ramos's final act at White Hart Lane, and his replacement has overseen a stunning reversal in fortunes for a side which had suffered their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign, claiming a meagre two points from their first eight matches. Redknapp swapped fellow UEFA Cup hopefuls Portsmouth FC for Tottenham and his new charges repaid him with seven points from three games in the space of seven days. After beating Bolton Wanderers FC 2-0 the north London club scored two goals in the dying minutes to claim a remarkable 4-4 draw at rivals Arsenal FC. Then, on Saturday, they spoiled Liverpool FC's unbeaten start to the campaign with Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring a late winner in a 2-1 comeback success.

'Turning points'
Despite the impressive results against two UEFA Champions League contenders, it is the first game of that trilogy that Redknapp pinpoints as key to their renaissance. "The Bolton match was vital – people talked about us showing character at Arsenal but we also showed a lot of character against Bolton," said the 61-year-old, who will be without the suspended Jamie O'Hara against Dinamo following his red card against Udinese. "That was a match we had to win and if we hadn't, we really looked like we were in trouble. Sometimes you get turning points and the draw with Arsenal was one. When we scored it was as though we had won the cup. Liverpool are such a tough team to play against and we went behind early so it was difficult for us. We kept going and when you do that and don't give up, you get your reward. We'd have taken five points against Bolton, Arsenal and Liverpool all day long so to take seven is fantastic."

Contrasting fortunes
Nevertheless, Spurs remain bottom of the table, a striking contrast to their Croatian opponents who returned to their customary position at the Prva Liga summit on Sunday with a 3-1 success at NK Inter ZapreÅ¡ic. The €20.5m summer transfer of Luka Modrić to tonight's opponents does not seem to have affected their march to a fourth successive title too adversely. Branko Ivanković's side also made a profitable start in Group D with two goals in the final nine minutes sealing a 3-2 home win against NEC Nijmegen, but a virus subsequently decimated their squad, causing the postponement of their recent fixture with HNK Rijeka.

Barca aim to retain pair

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is determined to tie midfield duo Xavi and Sergio Busquets down to new long-term contracts.

Vice-captain Xavi has been an established fixture in the Catalan club's first team for a number of seasons, while rising star Busquets has earned plenty of plaudits after making the step up from the youth set-up this year.

"I think that the negotiations need to be pushed forward in the interest of both parties," said Laporta.

"Xavi and Busquets are two players of the present and future and I think that they feel very clearly that their priority is Barcelona and that they will be with us for many more years.

"We will make every effort to retain them."

Renault keeps Alonso and Piquet for 2009

Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet will continue to drive for Renault next year. The French team confirmed an unchanged driver line-up on Wednesday, and ended speculation about a possible switch to Honda from the Spaniard. Alonso will also be a Renault driver in 2010, Piquet only has a one-year deal.

"This gives the ING Renault F1 Team one of the most exciting driver pairings with the perfect blend of youth and experience. Fernando's commitment for the next two seasons confirms the faith he has in the team and we are delighted to continue working with him.

BMW sees championship challenge in 2009

With major rule changes due for the 2009 F1 season, and a competitive year for the BMW Sauber F1 team in which it won its first Grand Prix, team boss Mario Theissen says the goal is for his outfit to be fighting for the title next year.

"In consideration of this situation, a shift in the balance of power on the 2009 Formula One grid is entirely possible," Theissen said of the rule changes. "In both Munich and Hinwil, we have been working flat-out on the developments for the coming season and the work on the different projects is progressing as scheduled, so far."

"The roll-out of the BMW Sauber F1.09 has been scheduled for 20th January at Valencia," he added. "Afterwards, we will conduct three further tests before the 2009 season kicks off in Melbourne on 29th March - some weeks later than was the case in recent years. The challenges are big but we will stick to our ambitious goal: in 2009, we want to be one of the teams battling it out for the title."

Michael Schumacher has congratulated Lewis Hamilton on becoming Formula One world champion

The seven-times former world champion admitted that he was "overwhelmed" by Sunday's title decider in Brazil, and has send his best wishes to Hamilton on his achievement.

"I congratulate Lewis Hamilton and I am sending very warm greetings to Felipe," he said.

An overtaking manoeuvre on Toyota's Timo Glock at the penultimate corner on the last lap of the final race of the season helped the 23-year-old capture the crown by a point from Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

"What a finale," Schumacher said, who currently works in an advisory role for Ferrari. "I am still overwhelmed from the race. I have never seen anything like this, not as a racer and not as a spectator - you can probably only say it was fate."

Schumacher also praised Felipe Massa, winner of the Brazilian Grand Prix, who lost out to Hamilton by just a point in the drivers' standings.

"He can leave that race with his head up as with this performance he surely has convinced all the people who still had doubts about his driving skills. He will for sure attack again next year."
