Stoner Second In Laguna Blockbuster, Melandri Out Of Luck Again

Casey Stoner took second place in the US Grand Prix today after an incredible battle with Valentino Rossi. With Ducati Desmosedici RR owner Tom Cruise watching from pit wall, Stoner launched from pole position and was immediately pursued by the Italian, with the pair swapping positions as they left the rest of the field trailing.

The stage was set for a big-screen finale but a rare mistake from the Australian in the final turn, just eight laps from the end, saw him run wide into the dirt and drop his Ducati as the front end dipped into the deep gravel. A huge gap of more than 20 seconds over third-placed Chris Vermeulen allowed Stoner to return to the race in second place, but there weren't enough laps left for him to hunt down Rossi.

Marco Melandri carried some excellent progress with the set-up of his bike into today's race, moving up from 15th on the grid to ninth place by lap ten, only for his charge to be halted by an unfortunate crash in turn one. The MotoGP World Championship now takes its traditional summer break before action resumes at Brno in the Czech Republic on August 17th.

CASEY STONER (Ducati MotoGP Team) 2nd

"At the end of the day I'm not happy because I've made a mistake and it has cost me the chance to win this race, but I also think that even if he rode a great race, some of Valentino's moves early in the race were too aggressive. Anyway, we can't do anything about that now - the important thing is that we've come away from here with 20 valuable points and after being written off in some quarters four races ago we now go on our summer holiday with a fighting chance of winning the title again. We're 25 points behind, which is a big gap, but there are seven races left and a lot can happen. We can take a lot of positives out of this weekend - mainly the fact that all the hard work by everybody at Ducati and Bridgestone has paid off again."

MARCO MELANDRI (Ducati MotoGP Team) 16th

"I hit a marker or something going into turn one and my hand came off the handlebar, so I couldn't get the bike turned. I took a heavy blow to my hand in the crash and needed a couple of laps to get back into the race because I wasn't sure how bad the injury was. The pain started to subside eventually but I was way back, lapping alone. I'm disappointed because after the first two or three laps I had a good pace together. It's a shame because it's another potentially good result ruined. I'm particularly sorry for the team because they have made a fantastic job and they deserved a good result".

LIVIO SUPPO (Ducati MotoGP Project Leader)

"It was a very tight race, spectacular to watch and evidence that it is not only the electronics that make the difference in this sport, but two riders who are one step above everybody else at the moment. Dani is also a part of that small club but unfortunately he wasn't here today. After three straight victories for Casey, today was Valentino's turn, that's fair enough. For sure if Casey had not shown a tremendous coolness and maturity, there would have been at least a few occasions in which they both could have crashed as a result of manoeuvres which, in our opinion, were a bit over the limit on Vale's part. Unfortunately Casey made a mistake that cost him dearly, but this can happen in the heat of the battle and, in any case, we've ended this period of the season in positive style. Unfortunately Marco was really unlucky. It's a shame because he was setting a good pace."

F1 drivers worry over KERS

Grand Prix Drivers' Association director Mark Webber has revealed his members' concerns regarding the adoption of Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems for next season in the Formula One World Championship

F1 team BMW Sauber are reportedly yet to identify the cause of an electric shock which struck one of their mechanics during testing in Jerez a few weeks ago, leading to worries that the technology may not be safe.

"There is a report coming from BMW about what happened there, but the rumour is they haven't a clue why it happened," Webber (pictured) told Autosport.

"They have no idea - and that is a worry. You only need to think about what would happen if someone gets shocked into the fast lane of the pitlane."

Webber explained the fears further via a real-life comparison - with an aeroplane disaster.

"It is like a plane crash when you don't get the evidence," he said.

However the teams seem less concerned that they will have the technology in place for 2009, fully tested and harmless.

"It is flavour of the month, but the simple fact is that teams will get on top of it," Force India chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne said.

"As soon as one person does, the nature of Formula One means everyone else has to.

"I'm sure [BMW] are working to understand [what happened], but it should be straightforward.

"Certainly the electronic KERS we're looking at is a fully sealed unit. All the high-tension cables are within a sealed unit. It's difficult to see how you can have a problem."

Schumacher to defend Kart title

Michael Schumacher will defend his title at the International Challenge of Go-Kart Champs in Florianópolis, Brazil.

According to his former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, who helps to attract top class drivers to the event, the German will lead a field of 26 or 27 names on November 30th at the Ingleses Kart Track. "To be honest, I didn't even have to invite him to come back. He told me recently at Hockenheim that he wished to race again because loved the town and the relaxed atmosphere he found here", said Massa during a press conference in Florianópolis.

The German will once again be the main guest, but not the only one. Massa has already talked with Robert Kubica, Sebastien Vettel and Sébastien Bourdais and expects that his Formula 1 mates can join the party. "It was almost set for Kubica to attend the race in 2007, but a last minute commitment prevented him from coming. He watched the International Challenge on TV and knows what the race is about. Now I'm confident that he will be able to take part for the first time", added Massa, who won the "double header" competition in 2006.

Besides the Formula 1 representatives, at least one NASCAR ace is expected to accept Massa's call. Four-time champion Jeff Gordon has been approached and should answer in the near future. "I met him at Indianapolis some years ago and then we raced together at the Champions Race in Paris. He seemed to be a nice guy and said that always wanted to visit my country. This is his chance and I think he will not miss it."

Twenty-four drivers attended the event in 2007. Due to the growing interest in the race among his fellow racers, Massa reckons that the grid will have to accommodate maybe two or three more karts. Rubens Barrichello, Nelson Piquet Jr., Tony Kanaan, Lucas di Grassi and local Stock Car front-runners are also likely possibilities.

Theissen: BMW Sauber not giving up on 2008

Team principal Mario Theissen has insisted BMW Sauber will not be abandoning 2008 development work, despite their recent dip in form that saw them score just a single point in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, dropping them into third place in the constructors’ standings for the first time this season.

Theissen admitted he was mystified by the F1.08s lack of race pace in Budapest, where neither Robert Kubica, who finished eighth having started fourth, nor Nick Heidfeld, who came home 10th, were able to clock the lap times the team had predicted - on either Bridgestone tyre compound.

“The Hungarian GP turned out to be a race we virtually weren't involved in,” Theissen told the official BMW Sauber website. “We have not yet detected the reasons but we will analyse what happened. To do so, we will take a close look at the interplay of car, tyres, track conditions and temperatures. This analysis will be carried out at home in Munich and Hinwil, as we aren't allowed to go testing due to the testing ban prior to the next race.”

BMW Sauber’s excellent performances earlier in the season, including their maiden win and one-two finish in Canada, mean they are almost certain to finish at least third in the championship, as they are currently 55 points clear of fourth-placed Toyota.

With such a secure position in the standings, the German-Swiss team could be forgiven for switching their development efforts exclusively to their 2009 machine, but Theissen is adamant they will not throw in the towel on 2008 just yet.

“We won't reduce our development pace for the remainder of the season,” he continued. “Our goal for the remaining three European rounds and four overseas races is to build on the good results scored in the first half of the season. We still have several improvements in the pipeline that should help us return to the road to success.”

BMW Sauber now trail McLaren by 10 points in the standings, with leaders Ferrari a further 11 points ahead.

Bridgestone opt to take super-softs to Singapore

Later this season Singapore will make its first appearance on the Formula One calendar, and Bridgestone announced on Friday that they plan to take their super-soft and soft tyre compounds to the city for September's race.

The company also confirmed that, as in 2007, they have selected to use their medium and soft compounds at October’s Japanese Grand Prix and their hard and medium rubber at the Chinese event. For the season finale in Brazil, however, there will be a change, with medium and soft tyres replacing the soft and super-softs used last year.

"After 11 races this season we can now confirm our tyre allocations for the final four races of the year,” explained Hirohide Hamashima, Bridgestone Motorsport’s director of motorsport tyre development. “This will be the first time for Formula One in Singapore and we will bring the soft and super soft compounds for this interesting new street course.

“High grip will be required at this track which is the primary reason for our choice. In Japan and China we will use the same compounds as we used in 2007. For Brazil we have moved a step harder in our allocation range. This race can be very hot, as we saw last year, and our data from the thrilling final race of last season showed us that this change would be beneficial for the teams.”

Tyre compounds for the 2008 season:
Australia - soft, medium
Malaysia - medium, hard
Bahrain - soft, medium
Spain - medium, hard
Turkey - medium, hard
Monaco - super-soft, soft
Canada - super-soft, soft
France - soft, medium
Britain - medium, hard
Germany - medium, hard
Hungary - super-soft, soft
Europe - super-soft, soft
Belgium - medium, hard
Italy - medium, hard
Singapore - super-soft, soft
Japan - soft, medium
China - medium, hard
Brazil - soft, medium
