Hamilton ready to become F1's youngest-ever champion

By David Tremayne

In Japan on Thursday Lewis Hamilton said that he is ready to become history’s youngest world champion.

While conceding that he did not fully appreciate the situation he was in this time last year, prior to a superb victory for McLaren in the rains of Fuji, he said: "Last year I was a little bit younger and so excited by the fact that I had just arrived in Formula One. So much was going on, the controversies, and so much to learn and take on board.

"I was leading here but I did not understand the magnitude of the situation I was in - and what was around me and the pressure that was on my shoulders. I dealt with it the best way I could, and it wasn't the best.

"I learned from those mistakes and I come here this year having taking a big step in my personal life as a grown up, and I think I have matured as a driver and learned from my mistakes by working as hard as I can to improve in all areas. Just as a driver, in this part of the season I feel a lot stronger than I did last year in terms of my state of mind and my fitness. Last year, by this time of the year I was so exhausted because it was such a crazy season.”

Hamilton’s seven-point advantage over Ferrari’s Felipe Massa means that he need not win any of the remaining three races, but can clinch the title by finishing second to Massa in each.

"This year we are focused on the championship, and the importance of finishing races and scoring points for the team,” he said. "Last year I felt a bit nervous. But I don't feel it this year.”

Massa is adamant that his own challenge is far from spent.

"I will just try to do a good qualifying, try to do a good first stint and then an even better second and third stint,” he said of his race strategy this weekend. “We could not manage to do the second stint in Singapore for some reason, but that is part of life. So we are seven points behind, we still have a chance and for sure it is a little bit less than we are supposed to have, but we still have a lot of chance. That is the most important thing.

"We are strong, we can win and sometimes things happen - although unfortunately it happened so many times this season and we lost important points. But we are a team and we are working strongly and very, very hard to try to win again and try to win the championship."

Speaking of his arch-rival, he added: "I think he is a very strong driver. He is a very strong man, and for sure it will be very hard to fight with him - as he has been in many races this season and last season. But I think we are very strong as well. We have shown great performance as drivers, great car as a team, and that is for sure the most important thing for the last three races.”

Meanwhile, BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica has not given up his own hopes of the title.

“I think mathematically I am still there as a couple of more drivers are as well, Kimi (Raikkonen) and Nick (Heidfeld),” he said, “but it is quite hard to be 20 points behind. There are two cars in front of me, two drivers which in normal conditions are quicker and in better shape. Also if you compare the first half of the season where I was closing the gap until after Canada where I was leading the championship, now the situation is completely the opposite. I am losing the gap to the leader. For sure it will be difficult but while there is a chance I will try my best as usual and try to score as many points as possible and try to be more lucky, as lately luck is not really there for me.”

Bridgestone have announced that all of the teams will run their special green-branded tyres in the Japanese Grand Prix to show the sport's support for the FIA's Make Cars Green environmental campaign.

The tyres will feature green stripes in their grooves, but one white stripe will still feature on the softer compound to differentiate it from the harder rubber.

Ancelotti keeps faith with Brazilian trio

AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti has vowed to keep faith with his three pronged Brazilian strikeforce for Sunday’s trip to Serie A strugglers Cagliari.

The trio of Kaka, Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato have been dubbed Ka-Pa-Ro in the Italian press in a reference to the Gre-No-Li partnership of the 1950s, comprised of Swedish forwards Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm.

Ronaldinho has taken over from Ronaldo, who left Milan in the summer after a series of injury problems limited his appearances with the Rossoneri.

Despite scoring in the midweek UEFA Cup victory over FC Zurich, Ukrainian forward Andrei Shevchenko will be left on the bench as Ancelotti keeps faith with his Brazilian trio who turned in a strong performance in last weeks derby win over Inter.

“After the way they played in the derby it’s right to confirm that they will at least start again on Sunday. Right now they’re the most reliable solution we have,” said Ancelotti.

Santacroce: Don’t pick me for your fantasy team…

For all those who have Serie A fantasy teams, here’s a tip for you: Don’t pick Fabiano Santacroce. Who says? Santacroce himself! The Italy U-21 defender (who has an Italian father and a Brazilian mother) is one of the most promising defenders in all of Italy, and has drawn comparisons to Alessandro Nesta. Santacroce is great at reading the game and anticipating the play but his tackling needs lots of work, as his yellow and red card tally show. Santacroce was sent off vs. Roma in the first week of the season, and after sitting out the second week he was back in action on Sunday. But what happened? He received two yellow cards against Udinese, thus earning another send-off. (At this rate he’s going to smash Paolo Montero's record of most red cards in Serie A) So what did Santacroce have to say about his latest sending off? “Don’t pick me for your fantasy team, I receive too many bookings.” So if you have a Serie A fantasy team, go sell Santacroce, you have his word.

Bridgestone riders get to grips with resurfaced Brno on opening day

Bridgestone-shod GP riders had their first taste of the newly resurfaced Brno race track in today’s opening free practice sessions in preparation for Sunday’s 22-lap Czech Republic Grand Prix.

Ducati’s Casey Stoner leads the proceedings at the end of the first day, having set a best lap time almost one second quicker than the existing record lap, set by Loris Capirossi aboard a Bridgestone-shod 990cc Ducati back in 2006.

Fiat Yamaha rider and championship leader Valentino Rossi claimed the second best time, less than two-tenths off Stoner’s pace, with the lead duo enjoying a considerable margin over the rest of the field.

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP made a promising start to the weekend with Loris Capirossi in third and Chris Vermeulen in sixth place, sandwiching San Carlo Honda Gresini riders Shinya Nakano and Alex De Angelis in fourth and fifth.

Nine Bridgestone riders scored promising top ten results in today’s combined standings with Kawasaki’s John Hopkins making a welcome return from injury in eighth place, and the Alice Team pairing of Toni Elias and Sylvain Guintoli rounding out the top ten.

Tyre Talk with Tohru Ubukata - Bridgestone Motorsport –Manager, Motorcycle Race Tyre Development

Were you surprised by the pace in today’s practice sessions?
“Both Casey and Valentinohave set very quick times today which are a big improvement over the existing record set by Loris and Ducati back in 2006. We could see from the two-day test that the tyre manufacturers had back in June that the lap times appeared quicker as a result of the resurfacing, because the track has become less bumpy, but nevertheless these lap times are very encouraging. All our six teams are well represented in the top ten but we must remember it is just the first day. The weather outlook for tomorrow does not look good but we hope for a dry morning practice so that we can look at the performance of our slick tyres over longer runs.”

What effect is the new surface having on tyre performance?
“The new surface has less grip than before and it is more severe on the front tyre. This is something that we have had to look into carefully to give riders the best feeling in the middle sectors of the lap where there is a lot of emphasis on the front. Based on the data that we obtained from the test riders in June, we have prepared tyres for this weekend’s race in an effort to cope with these new demands and the initial results from the GP riders today have been promising.”
