Veron Urges Tevez to stay

Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has urged fellow countryman Carlos Tevez to stay at Old Trafford.

Tevez is set to see his two-year loan deal reach its conclusion at the end of the season, but is yet to agree a permanent deal.

The Argentinian striker's future has been uncertain throughout the winter months, with a number of clubs rumoured to be interested in luring the 24-year-old away from the Red Devils.

But Veron, who joined United from Lazio for £28.1m in 2001, told Tevez he would be making a big mistake if he chose to leave Manchester.

Veron told the Daily Mail: "I hope Carlos Tevez stays at Manchester United because it is important for Argentine football.

"He'll know what he has to do to resolve the situation. I hope it is all resolved for the best."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he would like Tevez to stay at the club and although the striker has been linked with a speculative move to Real Madrid, his agent Kia Joorabchian has denied that any offer has been turned down.

Tevez has played in 15 competitive games for United this season - nine as a substitute - and has scored eight goals.

Angolan driver to test for Williams F1

The Williams team has invited Angolan driver Raphael Teixeira to test for them, raising hopes the country may see its first ever Formula 1 driver, state media reported Sunday.

Teixeira, who is currently in Formula 3 with UK-based Ultimate Motorsports Series, is hoping to start the tests in January, according to the daily Angolan sports newspaper Jornal dos Desportos.

The 26-year-old's father and manager, Jorge Teixeira, told the newspaper that he was "taken by surprise" by the invitation from Williams but said he believed that Angola was getting closer to have its first Formula 1 driver.

Teixeira began his racing career in the Portuguese Karting circuits in 2000, joining Formula 3 in 2002.

Formula 3 is a known breeding ground for Formula 1 - World Champions Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Nelson Piquet were all Formula 3 champions.

Rooney: Chelsea still have Euro Blues

Wayne Rooney is convinced Chelsea will still be experiencing a Champions League final hangover at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Although it is almost nine months since Manchester United profited at the Blues' expense to collect the biggest prize in European club football in Moscow, Rooney feels it will be a long time before Chelsea get over the heartache.

He sensed it at Stamford Bridge when the two sides met in September and he does not feel it will be much different when Luiz Felipe Scolari's men tackle the Red Devils on enemy territory for the first time since that fateful penalty shoot-out.

"Losing the Champions League final to any team is difficult but to lose to one of your big rivals is hard to take," Rooney told United Review.

"The next game against that team is always going to be a big one, with people talking about the final and the players no doubt thinking about it as well.

"You could definitely tell it was still on their minds and I am sure it will be the case again tomorrow - I bet our fans will be reminding them."

Liverpool's failure to beat Stoke on Saturday means United will be back in pole position should they overcome Chelsea, who are attempting to preserve an unbeaten away record, as they will have two games in hand and be just five points back.

It just heightens the anticipation, emphasising why every member of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad wants to play.

"You always want to play against the best teams," said Rooney.

"There has been great competition between the two sides in the last few years and there is always a lot at stake whenever we play each other.

"It's a big match for us because we know if we win, we will be within a point of Chelsea."

Japanese media criticise Honda over pull-out

Japanese newspapers levelled harsh criticism at cash-strapped Honda Motor over the weekend after its abrupt withdrawal from Formula One.

Honda announced the shock pull-out on Friday citing the financial crisis, ending an involvement in the sport which dates back to the 1960s.

Leading F1 commentator Jun Imamiya said Honda had simply given up after performing poorly since returning as a full constructor in 2006.

"Honda, as we knew it in its first F1 period (1964-68) and the second period (1983-1992), didn't give a damn and went on its way, win or lose," Imamiya wrote.

"Fighting right now without calling time is what F1 is all about. Not putting things off. That's what Honda Motor Co. has taught the Japanese people," he added.

Another commentator, Ken Kawakita, accused Honda of deserting fans after it stirred them up "and consumed their expectations as a kind of fuel."

"Honda has publicly declared that 'racing is our DNA' and behaved as if it was a company symbolising motorsport," he wrote in the Nikkan Sports.

"For being that way, it is socially responsible as a member of the racing world ... That responsibility is something that cannot be abandoned in such a selfish manner."

Honda's team racked up just three wins over the years but its engines powered drivers including world champions Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost to 69 victories.

Columnist Kunihiko Akai said Honda's success in the European-dominated sport had been in important in helping Japanese overcome a collective inferiority complex.

"Even though the Japanese people achieved their goals in technologies after they toiled in catching and overtaking the West, there remained a mental emptiness," Akai wrote in Sunday's Chunichi Sports daily.

"Honda helped fill the void through F1."

Former F1 driver Aguri Suzuki, whose Super Aguri team folded this year, said Honda's demise would have serious repercussions for Japan's future in the sport.

"F1 is a great goal for children in karting," Aguri said.

"With Honda's withdrawal, that goal may seem to be crumbling down. They may possibly feel that the 'world of dreams' is disappearing," he said, quoting Honda's catchphrase.

Former Super Aguri driver Takuma Sato, who started his career at a Honda-owned racing school, described the pull-out as a "shock."

"I took an interest in F1 when I saw Ayrton Senna ride a Lotus Honda at the Japan Grand Prix in 1987," Sato said.

"Honda's motorsport spirit has since lived inside me as something absolute."

Manchester City Targeting Kaka, Messi, Villa & Terry

By Mike Maguire

The Daily Mail claims that Manchester City will attempt to land either Kaka, Lionel Messi, David Villa or John Terry during the winter transfer window.

According to the tabloid, Sky Blues boss Mark Hughes has been promised one superstar signing by the the club's Abu Dhabi-based benefactor, Shiekh Mansour.

The Welsh manager has focused on comparitively low-key targets thus far, with Blackburn Rovers' Roque Santa Cruz and West Ham United duo Craig Bellamy and Scott Parker tipped to join Wayne Bridge at Eastlands.

But once Hughes feels he has added enough depth to his relegation-threatened squad, he will be given the green light to chase any of the four fantasy-footballers on City's shortlist.

The North West club have been linked with Kaka ever since their mega-money takeover at the end of last summer - and the subsequent £32 million purchase of Robinho from Real Madrid. Indeed, at point it seemed the AC Milan playmaker might be open to the possibility of joining his fellow Brazilian in Manchester, but he wasted little time quashing those rumours.

John Terry is another name that cropped in early September, and perhaps the link makes more sense now than it did then. Hughes' troops have been woefully inconsistent at the back, a problem the England captain's arrival could go along way towards fixing. However, the likely of him leaving Chelsea is... well, it's not going to happen, to put it bluntly. He's challenging for the Premier League title and already getting paid bucketloads - why would he move?

Similarly, Lionel Messi has no reason to ditch high-flying Barcelona for a side who were recently humiliated by Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup. The diminutive Argentine is arguably the world's most exciting player, currently starring for arguably the world's most exciting team. Another no-go, it would seem.

And then there is David Villa. The Valencia striker has been persistently linked with City over the past few weeks, and it was even reported last month that the clubs had opened negotiations. But the latest reports from Spain suggest the EURO 2008 winner will not be leaving the Mestalla this winter, even though the cash-strapped La Liga outfit could really use the sizeable transfer fee that would come with Villa's sale.

So will any of these four make their way to the City of Manchester Stadium by the beginning of February? Only time will tell, but on the surface it seems an exercise in futility for Sparky and the Sheikh.

Roma Hope to Spoil Beckham Bow

By Cindy Garcia-Bennett, PA Sport, Rome

Roma are hoping to spoil David Beckham's Serie A debut in Sunday evening's top Serie A game at the Stadio Olimpico.

The England midfielder is set to be included in Carlo Ancelotti's squad for the trip to the Italian capital.

Beckham, who joined the Rossoneri on a two-month loan deal from the Los Angeles Galaxy, is eager to make an immediate impact.

Milan enter their first official game of the year nine points behind league leaders Inter Milan.

"We will have to wait and see what Beckham's condition is," said Roma coach Luciano Spalletti.

"If we only evaluate his past performances and his play, he is probably a great champion."

Despite having to do without injured captain Francesco Totti, Spalletti is upbeat about his team's chances.

"I don't know how many stars Milan will play with," he said.

"It's probably going to be a difficult game but I have confidence in my group."

Inter Milan host Cagliari on Saturday.

The Nerazzurri go into the San Siro encounter on the back of a nine-game winning run in Serie A.

Siena travel to Turin to play second-placed Juventus, who will be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and striker David Trezeguet.

Juve trail Inter by six points and have been without the two players for several months.

A defeat for AC Milan against Roma could see Fiorentina climb to third in the standings provided Cesare Prandelli's men beat strugglers Lecce at home.

The Viola are unbeaten at home and trail the Rossoneri by a single point.

In-form Napoli expect to maintain their positive run at the San Paolo when they play hosts to Catania.

They have only given away one point this campaign in Naples and their form has allowed them to remain in fifth position.

Udinese aim to stop the rot when they host Sampdoria.

The Friuli outfit have taken just two points in their last eight games and a defeat against Samp could prove costly for under-fire coach Pasquale Marino.

Torino travel to the Marassi to meet Genoa looking for their first win on the road this season.

The Granata have collected just two points out of a possible 24 on their travels.

Palermo and Atalanta square off in Sicily with the Bergamaschi knowing that a defeat will allow the Rossaneri to leapfrog them in the standings.

Reggina will have an added motivation to beat Lazio on Sunday knowing that a victory could see them climb out of the relegation zone.

The Amaranto go into the encounter in Reggio Calabria two points behind Torino, who hold the last position of safety.

Bottom side Chievo will be looking to begin 2009 on the right foot when they travel to the Renato Dall' Ara stadium to meet Bologna.

The Flying Donkeys have won just two games of 17 this campaign and are six points adrift from Torino.

Cristiano Ronaldo Involved in Car Accident

One of the hottest soccer players in the world was involved in a car accident but thankfully he is allright. His car...not so much!

Cristiano Ronaldo was driving through a tunnel at Manchester Airport when he hit the wall and completely destroyed his very expensive Ferrari.

A witness told the UK Sun: "The front of Ronaldo's car was completely mangled. There was metal all over the road and debris - and we had to dodge our way through it.

“Ronaldo was just standing at the side of the road looking forlorn and bewildered...My daughter said to me, 'Oh my God - that's Cristiano Ronaldo!' It's amazing he was okay because his car looked so bad.”

We don't know what we would have done with ourselves if something happened to Ronaldo. Surprisingly, he left the accident scene without a scratch and was at practice later in the day. Now that's our man!

Gabriel Batistuta

Gabriel Omar Batistuta (born February 1, 1969), nicknamed Batigol, is a former professional footballer. The prolific Argentine striker played most of his club football at ACF Fiorentina in Italy, and he is the eighth top scorer of all time in the Italian Serie A league, with 184 goals in 318 matches between 1991 and 2003. On the international level, he is the all-time highest scorer for Argentina's national team, with 56 goals in 78 national team matches, and he represented his country at three FIFA World Cups. In 2004, he was named in the FIFA 100 list of the "125 Greatest Living Footballers".

When his club Fiorentina was relegated to Serie B in 1993, Batistuta stayed with the club and helped it return to the top-flight league a year later. A hero in Florence, the Fiorentina fans erected a life-size bronze statue of him in 1996, in recognition of his performances for Fiorentina. He never won the Italian league with Fiorentina, but when he moved to AS Roma in 2000, he finally won the Serie A championship to crown his career in Italy. He played his last professional season in Qatar with Al-Arabi before he retired in 2005.

Currently he works as a commentator having worked for Televisa Deportes during the 2006 FIFA World Cup and for the show "La jugada".

Personal life
Batistuta was born on 1 February 1969, to slaughterhouse worker Omar Batistuta and school secretary Gloria Batistuta, in the town of Avellaneda, province of Santa Fe, Argentina, but grew up in the near city of Reconquista. He has three younger sisters, named Elisa, Alejandra, and Gabriela.

At the age of 16, he met Irina Fernández, his future wife, at her quinceanera, a rite of passage on her 15th birthday. She is reported to have ignored him but five years later, on December 28, 1990, they were married at Saint Roque Church. The couple moved to Florence, Italy, in 1991, and a year later their first son, Thiago, was born. Thanks to good performances in the Italian championship and with the Argentine national team, Batistuta gained fame and respect. He filmed several commercials and was invited onto numerous TV shows, but in spite of this, Batistuta always remained a low-profile family man.

In 1996, during Fiorentina's 2-1 victory at AC Milan, he celebrated scoring the match's decisive goal by saying Te amo, Irina ('I love you, Irina', to his wife) for the cameras. The mix of sex appeal and faithfulness cemented Batistuta's heart-throb reputation among Argentine and Italian women. In 1997, Batistuta's second son, Lucas, was born, and a third son, Joaquín, followed in 1999. He now has a fourth son Shamel. In 2000, Batistuta and his family moved to Rome, where he played for AS Roma. Two years after Shamel was born, Batistuta was loaned to Inter. In 2002, after more than 10 years in Italy, the family moved to Qatar where Batistuta had accepted a lucrative celebrity playing contract with a local team, Al-Arabi.

Batistuta ended his career at Al-Arabi, retiring in March 2005, after a series of injuries that prevented him from playing. Soon afterwards he moved to Perth, Australia. In April 2006, the city's established A-league franchise, Perth Glory was put up for sale however Batistuta was not interested in the purchase seeing no real potential in the club. His nickname is Batigol as he scores a lot of goals and his name starts with "Bati."

The Player
Beginnings
As a child Batistuta preferred other sports to football. Because of his height he played basketball, but after Argentina's victory in the 1978 FIFA Wrld Cup, in which he was particularly impressed by the skills of Mario Kempes, he devoted himself to football. After playing with friends on the streets and in the small Grupo Alegria club, he joined the local Platense junior team. While with Platense he was selected for the Reconquista team that won the provincial championship by beating Newell's Old Boys from Rosario. His 2 goals drew the attention of the opposition team, and he signed for them in 1988.

Professional
Batistuta signed professional forms with Newell's Old Boys Club, whose coach was Marcelo Bielsa, who would later become Batistuta's coach with the Argentine national team. Things did not come easily for Batistuta during his first year with the club. He was away from home, his family, and his girlfriend Irina, sleeping in a room at the stadium, and had a weight problem that slowed him down. At the end of that year he was loaned to a smaller team, Deportivo Italiano, of Buenos Aires, with whom he participated in the Carnevale Cup in Italy, ending as top scorer with 3 goals.

In mid-1989, Batistuta made the leap to one of Argentina's biggest clubs, River Plate, where he scored 17 goals. However, all did not run smoothly. He had numerous run-ins with coach Daniel Passarella (with whom he had later confrontations on the national squad) and he was dropped from the squad in the middle of the season.

In 1990, Batistuta signed for River's arch-rivals, Boca Juniors. Having gone so long without playing, he initially found it hard to find his best form. However, at the beginning of 1991 Oscar Tabarez became Boca's coach, and he gave Batistuta the support and confidence to become the league's top scorer that season as Boca won the championship.

International
In 1991, Batistuta was selected to play for Argentina in the Copa America held in Chile, where he finished the tournament as top scorer with 6 goals as Argentina romped to victory. During the Copa América competition, the vice-president of Fiorentina was impressed by Batistuta's skills and signed him for the Italian club. However, the following season Fiorentina were relegated to the Serie B division, despite Batistuta's 13 season goals. The club returned to Serie A two years later, with the contribution of 16 Batistuta goals and managed by Claudio Ranieri.

In 1993, Batistuta played in his second Copa América, this time held in Ecuador, which Argentina again won. The 1994 FIFA World Cup, held in USA, was a disappointment: after a promising start Argentina were beaten by Romania in the last 16. The morale of the team was seriously affected by Diego Maradona's doping suspension. Despite the disappointing Argentine exit, Batistuta scored 4 goals in as many games, including a hat-trick in their opening game against Greece.

On his return to Fiorentina, Batistuta found his best form. He was the top scorer of the 1994-95 Ezio Pascutti's 30-year-old record by scoring in all of the first 11 matches of the season. In the 1995-96 season Fiorentina won the Italian Cup and Super Coppa. season with 26 goals, and he broke

During the qualification matches for the 1998 FIFA World Cup (with former River Plate manager Daniel Passarella now coaching the Argentine national team) Batistuta was left out of the majority of the games after falling out with the coach. Playing in the World Cup finals themselves, he scored 5 goals in that competition, before Argentina lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. In the game against Jamaica, he recorded the second hat trick of his World Cup career, becoming the 4th player to achieve this (the others were Sandor Kocsis, Just Fontaine, and Gerd Muller) and the first to score a hat trick in 2 World Cups.

After failure to win the Italian championship with Fiorentina, Batistuta started considering a transfer to a bigger team. In an effort to keep Batistuta, Fiorentina hired Giovanni Trapattoni as coach and promised to do everything to win the Scudetto. After an excellent start to the season, Batistuta suffered an injury that kept him out of action for more than a month. Losing momentum, Fiorentina lost the lead and finished the season in third place, which gave them the chance to participate in the Champions League in the following season.

Scudetto with AS Roma and last years

Batistuta stayed at Fiorentina for the 1999-00 season, tempted by the chance of winning both the Scudetto and the Champions League. After a promising start in both competitions, the team only reached seventh in the league and were eliminated in the second round group phase. The following season, he was transferred to AS Roma in a deal worth 35 million US dollars. Although a knee injury restricted his number of appearances, he scored 20 goals for A.S. Roma in his first season. He finally realized his dream of winning a major trophy as Roma clinched the Scudetto for the first time since 1983. The following season with A.S. Roma he changed his shirt number from #18 to #20 in reference to the number of goals he had scored during the Scudetto winning campaign. He also wore his age on the back of his Roma jersey in 2002, #33.

After a good series of performances by Argentina in the qualification matches for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, hopes were high that the South Americans - now managed by Marcelo Bielsa - could win the trophy, and Batistuta announced that he planned to quit the national team at the end of the tournament, which Argentina aimed to win. But Argentina's "group of death" saw the team fall at the first hurdle, as poor results against Nigeria, England, and Sweden meant that the team was knocked out in the opening round for the first time since 1962.

Back in Italy, Batistuta failed to find form with Roma and was loaned out to Internazionale; however, he failed to make an impression and departed for Qatari team Al-Arabi Sports Club. In Qatar, he broke the record of most goals scored that was held by Qatari Legend Mansour Mouftah with by scoring 24 goals. He scored more goals for the club than the number of games he played. He was awarded for being the top scorer in all Arab leagues in 2004 with a Golden Boot.

Batistuta retired in 2005, and now lives in Perth, Australia. Despite having completed his coaching badges in Argentina, he currently has no involvement with football (instead he prefers to play golf). He has, however, recently expressed an interest in coaching Australia's national team.

Nicky Hayden

Nicky Hayden, also known as ‘the Kentucky Kid’, is from a family of motorcycle racers. His two brothers are top AMA competitors, but his parents and one sister also have backgrounds in the sport. Nicky has gone all the way from success on dirt tracks to road racing Superbikes and finally to the Moto Grand Prix title - beating none other than Valentino Rossi - and is likely to be a feature on the scene for many years to come, as he is still only 25 years old

1985
Minibike dirt track racing début; multiple dirt track titles over the next six years in various small capacity classes

1992
Minibike road racing début; ‘senior’ road racing début, with Honda RS125 GP bike; would continue racing on dirt and roads with 250cc, 125cc and small capacity bikes

1997
Horizon dirt track award winner, with Harley-Davidson; AMA National road racing début, with Kawasaki

1998
4th in AMA Supersport 750, with Suzuki; 4th in AMA Supersport 600, with Suzuki - won Willow Springs

1999
AMA Supersport 600 Champion, with Honda CBR600 F4 - five wins; 2nd in AMA Formula Xtreme, with Honda - seven wins; 22nd in AMA Superbike, with Honda - 3rd at Pikes Peak; AMA Grand National Dirt Track Rookie of the Year; AMA/Speedvision Pro Athlete of the Year

2000
2nd in AMA Superbike, with number 69 Honda RC51 - three wins, three seconds

2001
3rd in AMA Superbike, with number 69 Honda RC51 - four wins

2002 American Honda, number 69 Honda
AMA Superbike Champion, with the Honda RC51 and nine race wins; also a World Superbike wildcard at Laguna Seca - fourth in race one

2003 Repsol Honda, number 69 Honda
Nicky moved straight to MotoGP with Honda’s factory team, as partner to title holder Valentino Rossi. He achieved ‘rookie of the year’ status with an ever-improving run of results on the RC211V, and had made it onto the front row of the grid by the last event of the year. Race results started with a couple of sevenths, and mid-season saw him begin a run of top six finishes, with third in Japan and Australia. 130 points placed him fifth overall

2004 Repsol Honda Team, number 69 Honda
There was another experienced team-mate for Hayden in 2004, in the shape of Alex Barros. For a works rider, the season did not really represent a step forward for Nicky, even if he was in the top five many times. Third place results came this time in Brazil and Germany, but there were crashes and six no-scores, which meant 117 points and a drop back to seventh equal. His best qualifying to date came with second in Italy

2005 Repsol Honda Team, number 69 Honda
2005 was a proper breakthrough year for Nicky, and this time he out-performed his third Repsol team-mate, 13-time race winner Max Biaggi. Hayden only missed top six qualification twice, and was on pole position three times. Biaggi had the edge in the first five races, but then the younger man eased into the top five twice before heading to his first GP on home soil. Laguna Seca returned to the calendar for the first time since 1994, and was the scene of Nicky’s best form as he won convincingly. This launched him into a run that included another five podiums, and 206 points meant third overall. There were also two fastest laps

2006 Repsol Honda Team, number 69 Honda
Yet another new partner came in the form of Dani Pedrosa, graduating from a successful 250cc career with two consecutive titles. Nicky put together a consistent run of top results - only twice outside the top three in the first eleven races, and this built him a good lead as Yamaha’s Rossi had mixed fortunes. The Assen race saw a thriller, with Hayden getting the better of Colin Edwards in a last lap duel, and his first race win in Europe. Another followed at Laguna, after which he had 34 points over Pedrosa, with Rossi fourth. The Italian came back strongly, and a clash of the Repsol riders in Portugal seemed to have cost Hayden the title. But Rossi did not perform in Valencia, and the crown was Nicky’s by five points. He scored a total of 252, as well as taking one more pole position

Dementieva through as other seeds tumble

Agence France-Presse

Top seed Elena Dementieva beat local favourite Marina Erakovic to grab a quarter-final spot in the ASB Classic here Wednesday as other seeds tumbled out of the women's tournament.
The world number four and Olympic champion beat the New Zealander 6-2, 6-3 as five of the eight seeds fell in second round matches.

Erakovic's already slim chances of beating Dementieva were further hampered by abdominal and neck strains and she required an extended medical break at 3-4 down in the second set.

Dementieva's victory sets up a quarter-final clash with fifth-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer on Thursday.

The Russian said the match against Erakovic had been difficult because of the overwhelming crowd support for her opponent.

"I think we had a good fight in the first set and I played a little better than yesterday and this is what I need, just to improve and keep playing better tennis in every round," she said afterwards.

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark also had a smooth passage into the last eight with a 6-4, 7-5 win over American veteran Jill Craybas.

But most of the seeded players fell by the wayside in defeats to less fancied opponents.

Fourth-seeded Canadian Alexsandra Wozniak went down 7-5, 6-2 to Japanese qualifier Ayumi Morita and Romanian Edina Gallovits scored a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 shock win over third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain.

Other players to go down included Czech sixth seed Nicole Vaidisova, Russian seventh seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Spanish eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Pavlyuchenkova, 17, the tournament's youngest player, was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai, who was runner-up in the tournament last year.

United stay on course for quadruple

Agence France-Presse

Sir Alex Ferguson may have said it was "not realistic" for Manchester United to win a unique European and domestic quadruple but he still believes his squad can compete on four fronts.
United opened their FA Cup campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Championship strugglers Southampton at St Mary's here Sunday.

Goals from youngsters Danny Welbeck and Darron (attn eds: correct) Gibson either side of a controversial Nani penalty maintained Ferguson's proud record of having never lost a third round tie in his 22-year reign at Old Trafford.

United, well placed in their quest for a third successive Premier League title, are also through to the last 16 of the Champions League and face Derby in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

No team have ever won all four trophies in the same season but Ferguson said: "I think we have a good enough squad to compete in every competition, as long as we do not pick up any injuries. That is the most important thing.

"Cup football is a knockout situation so you never know what is going to happen," the 67-year-old Scot added.

"We have some good young players at the club and these games are an opportunity for them to get some experience under their belts.

"Players like Welbeck and Gibson have shown today they have the confidence and the right temperament."

United's next FA Cup opponents are Tottenham, whose manager Harry Redknapp was in charge of Portsmouth when the holders defeated Ferguson's men in a quarter-final at Old Trafford last season.

"It's a mouth-watering game. Matches between us are always very competitive and we beat them at the same stage last season.

"Their manager Harry Redknapp was in charge at Portsmouth when they knocked us out in the quarter-finals so hopefully we can get our own back."

Ferguson was able to rest star winger Cristiano Ronaldo while England striker Wayne Rooney was left on the bench until the final 27 minutes.

Teenager Welbeck was not even born when Ferguson lifted the first of his five FA Cups in 1990 but the 18-year-old showed he has ability beyond his years by opening the scoring in the 20th minute.

John O'Shea headed against the underside of the crossbar from Ryan Giggs's corner and Welbeck was quickest to react and nod the rebound into an empty net.

Southampton's hopes of an upset were all but ended eight minutes before half-time when striker Matt Paterson was shown a straight red card for a wreckless two-foot lunge on Nemanja Vidic.

Nani doubled United's lead from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half after referee Mike Riley harshly adjudged David McGoldrick to have handled the Portugal international's free-kick.

Victory was secured nine minutes from time when substitute Gibson applied the finish to Rooney's pinpoint cross to register his first United goal.

Ferguson singled out Welbeck for praise, saying: "Danny did fine. We know about his temperament, he has got quality and is learning all the time."

Southampton, who upset the odds to beat United in the 1976 FA Cup final, are now second from bottom in the second-tier Championship.

They were always likely to struggle against a United team, which also featured Edwin van der Sar, Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Anderson and Gary Neville.

Saints manager Jan Poortvliet said his side had been on the wrong end of several bad decisions by Riley.

"Their first goal was offside, in my opinion, it was not a sending-off and it was not a penalty," the Dutchman insisted.

Sainz takes second Dakar stage win

By Pablo Elizalde

Carlos Sainz has taken his second stage victory of the 2009 Dakar to consolidate himself in the lead of the event after four days.

The Spaniard, however, was followed closely by his main rival so far, Nasser Al-Attiyah, who finished just six seconds behind the former world rally champion.

Sainz, winner of the second stage last Sunday with his Volkswagen Touareg, completed today's 459-km special from Jacobacci to Neuquen in 3h:42.57, just six seconds ahead of BMW driver Al-Attiyah.

The Spaniard and the Qatari have won two stages each so far, and the Volkswagen drivers is three minutes and 46 seconds ahead in the overall standings.

Sainz could have won by a bigger margin, but he was slowed down by a slow puncture late in the stage.

"We began going pretty fast, and then we reached Nasser and he realised we were behind and start to attack a lot and we continued both at the very good pace," said Sainz at the end of the day.

"Then I overtook him outside the track but I started to lose pressure in one of the tyres and I had to stop to inflate it because it was a slow puncture.

"It kept losing pressure until the end of the stage and I think I was left with just half a kilo of pressure and we won by five or six seconds. It's a shame."

Al-Attiyah, meanwhile, admitted he was not disappointed to lose out to Sainz in today's stage.

"Tomorrow he will start in front of us, and with the dunes it is much better for me," the Qatari added.

Mitsubishi's Luc Alphand took third place today, over a minute behind Sainz, with Mark Miller in fourth in a Volkswagen and Joan Roma in fifth in the second Mitsubishi.

Volkswagen's Giniel de Villiers kept third place in the standings despite crossing the finish line in sixth today.

Reigning champion Stephane Peterhansel finished down in eighth and lost nearly seven minutes to Sainz.

Kawasaki poised to quit MotoGP

By Simon Strang and Toby Moody

Kawasaki is poised to withdraw from the MotoGP World Championship with immediate effect, autosport.com has learned.

According to sources, the Japanese manufacturer is set to make an announcement regarding its plans for 2009 on Monday, January 5, when it is expected to confirm details of its withdrawal from the premier motorcycle racing class.

It remains unclear why Kawasaki is quitting, though both the global economic crisis and a lack of results are likely to have been factors in the decision.

The news is a blow to MotoGP's organisers, who will have the number of factory teams reduced to four at a time when the rival World Superbike Championship has gained another two in Aprilia and BMW.

Kawasaki's imminent withdrawal will leave Marco Melandri and John Hopkins without a ride for next season. Melandri had hoped to revive his career with the team after a catastrophic season with the factory Ducati squad in 2008.

"I have to wait and hear some words, as at the moment I hear nothing," Melandri told autosport.com.

"If it is true, then I can only hope that when I wake up on January 1st it is all a nightmare."

Kawasaki returned to the premier MotoGP class in 2003 with bold plans to become regular contenders, but has so far failed to record a victory in the premier class.

The closest the team came were three second places in three years with Randy de Puniet (Motegi 2007), Shinya Nakano (Assen 2006) and Olivier Jacque (Shanghai 2005).

Kawasaki secured big-money signing John Hopkins from Suzuki at the beginning of 2008 and it was hoped that this would trigger an upturn in results. But the American was hampered by injuries and both he and teammate Anthony West struggled with the inconsistent handling of the ZX-RR.

In the end, fifth places for Hopkins (at Estoril) and West (at Brno) were the best the team could manage.

Nevertheless, Kawasaki was set to enter 2009 with optimism, having landed former GP-winner Melandri, alongside the fired-up Hopkins to lead the development of the ZZ-XR in the new one-make tyre era.

Kawasaki's withdrawal will be the fourth time a Japanese manufacturer has pulled out of a major motorsport category in recent weeks. Honda announced in early December that it was quitting Formula One, while Subaru and Suzuki confirmed later in the month that they were stopping their programmes in the World Rally Championship.

Bridgestone begins 2009 preparations with encouraging Valencia test

Less than 24 hours after Casey Stoner took victory in the final race of the 2008 season, Bridgestone’s preparations for the 2009 season got underway with a test at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia.

Bridgestone will be the sole tyre supplier to the MotoGP championship from 2009 and the Valencia test marked the first occasion to evaluate new specification tyres with all teams and riders for next year. A total of 18 MotoGP riders participated in the test on Monday with some riders joining new teams and others enjoying their first taste of MotoGP machinery.

In accordance with the agreed tyre restrictions for this test, Bridgestone supplied a total of 12 slick tyres to each rider, consisting of two different front and rear specifications.

The introduction of the sole tyre supply regulation for next season will see a reduction in the total number of tyres available for each rider during the race weekend, so tyres will have to operate within a wider working range with a greater level of durability. Bridgestone has also reduced the maximum level of grip of the tyres in a concerted effort to assist the sport’s governing body in its drive for improved safety through reduced cornering speeds.

Monday’s session was held in hot and sunny conditions with Casey Stoner resuming where he left off on Sunday, topping the timesheets with a best lap time of 1m32.464s using the new Ducati GP9 machine. Tuesday’s session was curtailed by intermittent rain and by 14.00 no riders had ventured out on track.

Bridgestone will now use the data collated from this session in order to prepare tyres for the next test session which will take place at the end of November in Jerez.

Tohru Ubukata – Bridgestone Motorsport – Manager, Race Tyre Development
“I am really very satisfied with the first trials of our new specification slick tyres which we were able to carry out in the dry conditions on Monday. Considering it is the first time that we are producing MotoGP tyres for everybody in a sole tyre supply situation, I think we have made a good start. We have used the foundation of our 2008 tyres for these new specs but made some important alterations to ensure that the tyres have a wide operating window and can work well for all teams and riders. We have reduced the overall grip level of the tyres in order to accomplish this and the feedback from the riders has been encouraging. The track conditions on Monday were excellent and the lap times were also very competitive as a result. The most important thing for us is to know that our tyres are durable because this will be one of the most fundamental things for us next season. Some riders put up to 40 laps on the same set of tyres with great consistency which was particularly impressive. Unfortunately the conditions today have not been as good, but the information obtained from yesterday’s session will be instrumental for us to hone the tyre specs over the winter period. This new situation as the only tyre manufacturer will be a new challenge for us, but I am sure we are up to the job and can live up to the trust that the teams, manufacturers and riders have shown in us and our capabilities.”

Pramac lose Alice backing, Canepa to Onde

Onde 2000 look set to expand to two Ducatis in 2009 to accommodate Niccolo Canepa, who jumps from the scaled down Pramac team.

A shortfall of funds could force the Pramac Ducati team to scale down their efforts to just one bike for Mika Kallio in 2009, with Niccolo Canepa being quickly transferred over to the Onde 2000 team instead.

Spanish publication AS is reporting that Italian telecommunications company Alice has decided to pull its sponsorship of the satellite Ducati team, leaving them with only enough money to run a single bike for 250GP graduate Kallio.

Another blow to the series in the week that saw Kawasaki poised to withdraw their manufacturer effort, Ducati have nonetheless moved quickly to maintain their five-strong effort in 2009.

Indeed, despite the threat of being frozen out, Ducati test rider Canepa will continue to make his MotoGP debut this year after being shifted over to the sister GFH-run Onde 2000 team alongside series returnee Sete Gibernau.

Onde 2000 were apparently already considering a second bike alongside Gibernau, but AS claim it was originally being earmarked for Suzuki World Superbike exile Fonsi Nieto, relative of GFH owners Pablo and Gelete Nieto.

Nonetheless, it is Canepa who will assume the bike, which is getting its title sponsorship from a large Spanish property development company, to keep the official entry at 19, pending Kawasaki's expected announcement.

Fergie: Chelsea Clash is Crucial

By Rich Jones, PA Sport

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists an early conclusion to his side's league battles with title rivals Chelsea this season should not detract from the significance of this Sunday's clash.

Every season since 2002-03, the Red Devils have faced Chelsea in the closing weeks of the season, with their summit meetings frequently termed title deciders.

However, after September's 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, this weekend's match at Old Trafford will bring an unusually early end to their Barclays Premier League hostilities.

But although the games remaining this season would give either team plenty of time to recover from defeat, Ferguson insists the importance should not be downplayed.

"That will be a big game. It's unusual to have it in January, it's usually towards the end of the season," the Scot told Inside United magazine.

"It's been later - in the last two or three games - for the last two seasons. It doesn't matter when you play Chelsea, though, it's always going to be a massive game.

"It's a little different with the timing, but we're still aiming to win it. They've done very well away from home but not so well at home so it's been interesting from them this season."

Should United win in front of their own fans it will take them to within a point of Luiz Felipe Scolari's side with two games in hand.

And Ferguson admits that would strike a major psychological blow against the team widely expected to provide their main competition for the Premier League crown.

"If we can get within a couple of points of Chelsea and we've games in hand, then we're in a great position," he said.

Arbuckle injury blow for Queens

Queen of the South striker Gary Arbuckle will miss the rest of the season after breaking his leg during Saturday's 2-2 draw at Morton.

Arbuckle had just returned to the starting line-up after missing four games through injury.

Saturday's goal was Arbuckle's second of the season for Queens.

Jose set for Fergie reunion

Jose Mourinho will renew his rivalry with Sir Alex Ferguson when Internazionale take on Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Mourinho guided his then FC Porto side to victory against United in 2004 before the Portuguese team went on to win the Champions League and he enjoyed many classic encounters with Ferguson's side as manager of Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri returns to Stamford Bridge after Chelsea were drawn against the Turin-based side.

Ranieri spent four years in charge of Chelsea before being replaced by Mourinho, since when he endured difficult spells at Valencia and Parma before taking charge of Juve last year.

Liverpool play Real Madrid in a repeat of the 1981 European Cup Final in Paris, which was decided by Alan Kennedy's goal, while inconsistent Arsenal face an AS Roma side that is currently tenth in the Serie A table.

Elsewhere, Barcelona will start as favourites to progress against Lyon while Atletico Madrid take on Iberian rivals FC Porto.

Sporting Lisbon, who finished as runners-up to Barcelona in Group C, take on a Bayern Munich side that had the best record in the group stages, while outsiders Panathinaikos have been drawn against the 2006 semi-finalists Villarreal.

The full draw is:
Chelsea v Juventus
Villarreal v Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon v Bayern Munich
Atletico Madrid v FC Porto
Lyon v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Liverpool
Arsenal v AS Roma
Internazionale v Manchester United

Tevez Unhappy With Fergie Comments

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez has risked the wrath of Sir Alex Ferguson by reacting to the manager's comments regarding his contract situation.

On Sunday Tevez, 24, revealed his disappointment at speculation that he had rejected a new offer from the Premier League champions, and on Monday he reiterated his desire for his future to be sorted.

"I didn't like him (Ferguson) saying I didn't like the offer I was made because neither my agent nor me were given one," the Argentina international, whose deal runs out in the summer, told Radio del Plata.

"I don't know anything on my future. United know what they must pay if they want me to stay.

"I want to stay but the club have not made any offer. I've been waiting for them for a year and a half."

The ongoing saga has prompted reports that Tevez, who joined United from West Ham in 2007, is a target of Real Madrid, and the forward added: "If I have to quit the club, I want to quit on good terms."

"Now all clubs are on an equal footing. If a club comes to me and offers me a five-year deal, I will accept it for peace of mind.

"I will sign my last contract, and then I figure that I'll go back to Boca (Juniors.) That could be in four or five years."

"I want everybody to know no offer has been made. I don't like that they are playing with our fans, who show their love to me in each match."

Mexican interest in Honda Racing F1?

There are reports that Carlos Slim, the 68-year-old Mexican telecommunications billionaire, may be interested in buying the Honda Racing F1 team, as a means of growing his business in Latin America. Slim is the owner of Telmex and has a record of supporting Mexican racers. Although his $60bn fortune is based in Mexico, Slim's biggest business is in Brazil where he owns Embratel, which is growing twice as fast as his Mexican business. He will understand the value of F1 sponsorships as he is a member of the board of Philip Morris International, which owns Ferrari sponsor Marlboro. He is also a major supporter of Bruno Senna, who had been tipped as a possible Honda driver before the Japanese announced that the team was being axed.

Slim has made a name as a man who buys cheap companies, builds them up and sells them. But there has to be a decent business model for him to be interested. Honda F1 might fit the bill, but he knows that it will require hefty investment in the next few years before it begins to create value. However if this can be used to improve his sales in Brazil there is logic in the move.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that in recent months former GP2 owner Adrian Campos (who sold out his team to Alejandro Agag not long ago) embarked on running a Mexican A1 GP team amid rumours that he will also be overseeing a promotional scheme for Mexican drivers, funded by Slim. Campos has always had F1 ambitions as a team owner, hoping that one day he could be the man running the first serious Spanish F1 team.

Michael Schumacher and Honda

One intriguing rumour to surface over the Christmas period is the suggestion that Honda Racing F1's Ross Brawn may have been talking seriously to Michael Schumacher about working together to save the Brackley team. Schumacher has plenty of private money but it is unrealistic to believe that anyone will spend their own cash to pay the running costs of an F1 team. However, the Schumacher name does have a great deal of clout in the commercial world and it is possible, although rather unlikely in the current financial climate, that his involvement in a team could bring in the kind of money needed to run Honda for the next couple of years. This would give the team the opportunity to show an improvement in performance and allow the global economy to rebound and would perhaps end up being a sound investment for him.

The big question therefore is whether sponsors will join the party. The Honda team is an impressive operation and it should be getting better in 2009. The package being developed will have to be slightly modified because Honda will not be supplying engines and so commercial arrangements will be necessary with another manufacturer. The obvious choice is Ferrari, but we believe that there are other options available, largely because of capacity that will become available as a result the F1 testing ban that will begin in March.

Our spies at Brackley tell us that there has been a lot of interest in the team with perhaps as many as 25 different enquiries. Probably five or six of these are considered to be serious. We do not believe that any of them are automobile manufacturers as the world's car markets are in such a mess that no company can even consider such a step, despite the fact that a great asset that is available at a fraction of its actual cost.

The details of who is involved in these five or six bids is not clear but we hear that some of them are big organisations which see F1 as a good investment to support their business development. A great deal of effort is thus going on at the moment to finalise a deal by the end of January, when engine contracts will need to be organised in order for the team to be ready to run in Australia.

John Hopkins still waiting on Kawasaki

American John Hopkins is still waiting for official confirmation that Kawasaki will plunge the MotoGP world championship into crisis by withdrawing its factory team from the 2009 season.

Kawasaki has signalled its intention to quit with immediate effect with team personnel all told on December 29 that the team would fold.

Hopkins though is still waiting on clarification of Kawasaki’s plans; with the Japanese factory as yet to release any official statement concerning its future plans.

In a message posted on his personal website to fans on New Year’s Eve, Hopkins said: “As you all know, everything is up in the air and people want answers.

"Everything from here is now in my manager’s hands. I have read nearly all articles posted and I find it absolutely crazy how people are stating that I have announced this or said that when in fact I have avoided phone-calls from the media until time permits.

"There will be an official press release very soon, where we can confirm or deny all rumours. I will let you all now as soon as I get the go ahead. I just wanted to say thank you for all your support through this year and now.”

An official statement is expected from Kawasaki next Monday.

Hopkins’ manager Bob Moore has so far refused to comment on the situation.

Learn About the Computer Evolution With Netbook Computers

By Twinomugisha Charles

At first there was a desktop computer, then there came the laptop, then notebook and now we have the netbook computer. Everyone who uses the laptop may at one time need to have a laptop that is simple to carry anywhere but still accomplish his tasks that’s why the netbook is put forward as the best computer for the next generation.Netbooks are bedfellows to Notebook computers the only difference is that they are very small compared to most notebook computers. They are made specifically for browsing and emailing the internet. One of the reasons why they are liked much is that they are energy efficient and lightweight.

Netbooks came into existence in 2007 when Asus Company made the Asus Eee PC. Netbooks have a small screen which ranges in the size of 7 to 10 Inches. They also have a manageable small keyboard although it doesn’t have a CD ROM or disk drive and that makes it the lightest notebook on planet earth. But although it is small, it has a RAM OF 1 GB, 80 GB HDD, advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) compared to other laptops .That means you can use it for very long time without getting worried about the size of information you are using on this computer called netbook. With our world of internet and the global village, these netbooks are made to pick internet from any location as long as one is in easy reach of internet connectivity.

The materials made to manufacture them are specifically to make them extra portable. And for that matter they are the best laptops to carry with you anywhere and that is the reason why they are taking the market of computer by storm. They come preloaded with Ubuntu Linux but that doesn’t mean that you can’t change it to Microsoft windows XP. I know there are some people who are not conversant with Linux but they shouldn’t get scared because one can change it to use Microsoft Windows as soon you get one who can do it for you.The best of all is that the price of these netbooks is less compared to the usual suspect of laptops .While the normal laptop with minimum features can be got at $1000, the netbook is cheaper some starting at as low as $300 .The reason given being that these netbook computers don’t have many features found in the other set of laptops.

With the current trend in business, education, travel and office work, netbook computers seem to take the world of computing by surprise. There are many places in this world where you can get them at a cheaper price, but the only place I recommend to purchase them is at TigerDirect.com because they have been in computer business for very long time and they have the best guarantee for their entire items. So next time you plan to buy a laptop, don’t forget to ask for the netbook computer if what you want is to browse the internet and send mails through the net.

France beats Taiwan at Hopman Cup

Alize Cornet overcame fatigue and French teammate Gilles Simon overcame some rustiness to beat Taiwan at the Hopman Cup on Saturday.

Cornet beat Hsieh Su-wei 6-4, 6-4 and Simon, who moved up in the rankings from No. 29 to 7 last year, defeated Lu Yen-hsun 6-3, 7-6 (8). The two then combined to beat Hsieh and Lu 6-4, 7-6 (9) in mixed doubles to complete France’s 3-0 win, saving five set points in the tiebreaker. The duo will play Italy on Tuesday.

The defending champion United States, represented by Meghann Shaughnessy and James Blake, takes on Slovakia on Monday.

The U.S, Australia, Germany and Slovakia are playing in Group A while Russia, France, Italy and Taiwan are in Group B. The winners of each group play in the final next Friday.

Simon had problems closing out the Taiwanese player in the second set, allowing Lu to break his service in the sixth game to get back into the match and force a tiebreaker.

Both Cornet and Hsieh had problems with their serves in the opening set, and Hsieh was 0-for-4 in her breakpoint chances. Cornet succeeded once in five tries — in the ninth game when she took a 5-4 lead—then held serve and won the set with an ace.

It was the only Saturday match at the mixed teams event. On Sunday, Russia, featuring the brother-sister combination of Marat Safin and Dinara Safina, plays Italy’s Flavia Pennetta and Simone Bolelli.

Lleyton Hewitt, who hasn’t played since the Beijing Olympics due to a hip injury and subsequent surgery, partners Casey Dellacqua when Australia takes on Germany in one of two matches Monday.
