Indonesia sends 21 athletes to Olympic Games in London

Jakarta - Indonesia will send 21 athletes playing seven sports to participate in the London Olympic Games scheduled between July 12th and 27th.

The contingent was confirmed by the National Olympic Committee in the presence of sports minister Andi Mallarangeng here on Friday.

Andi called on the athletes to do their best and bag medals to realize their collective dream at the venue. He added that although the number was not as big as for other countries, they could still make their country proud if they strive hard.

The number of members in the contingent is smaller than that for the Beijing Olympic Games of 2008 which saw the participation of 24 athletes. Indonesia`s medal tally during the last Olympics was one gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

The Indonesian contingent for this year`s Olympic Games includes Taufik Hidayat who won a gold medal in men`s singles in badminton at the 2004 Athens Olympics as well as Liliyana Natsir who won a silver medal along with Nova Widianto in the badminton mixed doubles championship in Beijing.

For the Olympic Games in London, Liliyana will pair with Tontowi Ahmad along with whom she won an All England champion title recently.

The Indonesian athletes are scheduled to depart to London in three batches on July 12, 16 and 23 accompanied by 20 officials.(*)
