World Superbike – Donington Park 1st Qualifying

Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) led the way in qualifying at a cold and wet Donington Park circuit as a group of British Superbike wild-card riders made a good impression on the first day of action. The 39 year-old Australian, who has never actually won at the Leicestershire track, clocked a time of 1 minute 44.377 seconds to hold the overnight pole from Brands Hatch winner Ryuichi Kiyonari (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda).

The Japanese rider, British champion for the last two years, was one-tenth behind Bayliss in second but a fraction ahead of a trio of current BSB riders headed by Cal Crutchlow (HM Plant Honda), Tom Sykes (Rizla Suzuki) and Leon Haslam (HM Plant Honda).

The Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati pairing of Italian Max Biaggi and Ruben Xaus were next up in sixth and seventh, with two more Spanish riders Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) and Gregorio Lavilla (VentAxia Honda) filling the next two places, while another Brit James Ellison (Hydrex Bike Animal Honda) completed the top 10.

So far failing to make their mark are the Yamaha Motor Italia pairing of Troy Corser, who crashed twice in the morning free practice session and is in 12th, and Noriyuki Haga, down in 24th position, while the other championship contender Max Neukirchner (Alstare Suzuki) could only manage 23rd. Today's appalling weather conditions produced a total of 19 crashes involving 13 riders.

Shinya Nakano unsure of 2009 job prospects

By Matthew Birt

Japanese rider Shinya Nakano has confirmed he has no firm plans in place for the 2009 MotoGP world championship.

Nakano claimed his season’s best result with fourth in Brno last weekend on his debut on board Honda’s current 2008 factory spec Honda RC212V.

But the Gresini Honda rider still has no deal in place for 2009, and he’s not sure whether he will be staying in MotoGP next season.

Aussie Chris Vermeulen and reigning American superbike champion Ben Spies have been in talks with the San Carlo-backed Gresini squad. And with Alex de Angelis looking like he might be staying, Nakano might be frozen out.

Nakano, who has scored points in all 12 MotoGP races in 2008, told MCN: “I don’t know anything yet. So far I have no information and I will probably know something around Motegi time.

"I’d like to stay in this team because with the new bike I feel better. I also understand the Honda bike now and I know the people, so my target is to stay.”

Mutu appeals Fifa fine

By Amanda Cornforth

Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against Fifa's order for him to pay €17.17million (£13.84million) compensation to the Blues.

The order was given to Mutu in May, with world football's governing body telling the Fiorentina and Romania forward that he must compensate the club that sacked him in 2004 after he tested positive for cocaine.

A CAS statement said: "Mutu requests the CAS to annul the Fifa decision and to establish that no compensation is in fact due."

No date has yet been set for a hearing.
Contract

The fine handed to Mutu was the largest ever from Fifa, having been based on the length of his contract left to run at the time of his Stamford Bridge sacking.

Chelsea signed Mutu from Parma for 22.4million euros (£18million) in 2003, one of the first players to join in the Roman Abramovich revolution, but the player failed to settle in London.

Following his dismissal, Mutu served a seven-month ban from football. He then signed for Juventus at the end of 2005 and Chelsea began proceedings against the player to claim damages for the transfer fee lost.

The 29-year-old has already received the backing of the International Federation of Professional Footballers' Associations, FIFPro, and the Romanian Footballers' Trade Union, Afan in his case against the Fifa fine.

Donadoni and Collins meet West Ham for talks over vacancy

By Jason Burt

West Ham United yesterday held interviews with Roberto Donadoni and John Collins and were scheduling meetings with others on the seven-strong shortlist to become their new manager – including Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Mancini – in the next two days. The club hope to make an announcement on who will succeed Alan Curbishley by the end of next week.

That would appear to rule out Croatia's Slaven Bilic – who features prominently on the list – but despite public statements from the former defender and from the Croatian Football Association, West Ham have had much more positive responses about the 39-year-old's interest in private. He remains on their list.

West Ham have, however, discounted the former Liverpool manager Gérard Houllier, who was on the original shortlist and was extremely keen to be considered, and he may have been replaced by the former Ajax and Denmark coach Morten Olsen. Another Dane, Michael Laudrup, is also on the list and West Ham, who are not considering Paolo Di Canio, Harry Redknapp or Stuart Pearce, were yesterday fielding inquiries from agents representing other coaches.

West Ham's technical director, Gianluca Nani, and their chief executive, Scott Duxbury, yesterday held the first interviews, talking to both Donadoni, the former Italy coach, and Collins at Upton Park, after both immediately accepted the offer to be interviewed. Club sources insisted that they spoke to the pair first because of scheduling reasons and insisted that they should not necessarily be regarded as the favourites.

Both Zola and Mancini, for example, have reacted enthusiastically to being contacted by the club. Representatives acting for Mancini, the former Internazionale coach, moved quickly yesterday to reassure the club that comments purported to come from one of his agents, ruling him out, were incorrect.

After this weekend, West Ham will quickly move to a reduced shortlist of two or three candidates. They might still include Bilic although, as a source pointed out yesterday, while the club understands the sensitivities surrounding him, with Croatia having two vital World Cup qualification games in the next week, they need to have some clarity.

There have been suggestions from the Bilic camp that he may want to wait until after his country's first four qualification games before taking up the post. If that is the case then West Ham will look elsewhere but they insisted yesterday that their private soundings still gave them grounds for hope.

Collins is the only Briton on the list and even he has great experience of European football, having played for Monaco. The list indicates the direction in which the club wants to go with a coach, who will develop the squad, and organisation along Continental lines.

West Ham announced yesterday that they have signed the Uruguayan international left-back Walter Lopez. Because the 22-year-old, who has agreed a one-year deal, is a free agent after leaving the Argentine club River Plate he can move outside the transfer window. However, the club's hopes of securing the Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah, who is also a free agent, appear to be fading.
