Inter Milan Still the Leader Despite their draw with Roma 1-1

By: Ally White

Inter Milan F.C, the current champs, missed a good opportunity to stretch their lead at the top of the Italian Serie A League, after drawing 1-1 with AS Roma at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. This victory brings Internazionale to nine wins, two draws and a defeat to establish themselves as the leaders with 29 points. They are followed by Juventus with 24, who on Saturday beat Atlanta 5-2. AC Milan reached third place with 22 points by winning 2-1 against Lazio, while Sampdoria fell to fourth place after losing 2-0 against Cagliari, with Fiorentina, who has 21 points. The game at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium started with a great defense by Roma and good execution in the counterattack. The host team, Inter Milan, tried to control the action with aggressiveness; however, the Roman team surprised the home side as they scored in their first action and they took the lead on the scoreboard thanks to a great header from Mirko Vucinic. Vucinic beat the Brazilian defender Lucimar da Silva Lucio in the air and sent the ball directly to the back of the net at minute 13. After this surprising goal, the players led by the Portuguese coach José Mourinho tried equalize the scoring, but they lacked offensively in the first half. Inter Milan played against a Roman defense that overshadowed the attempts of the Cameroon's Samuel Eto 'o and the Argentina's Diego Milito during the opening half. As Roma kept to their game plan, the team created another option at minute 37 as the Norwegian Roma defender, John Arne Riise, unsettled Julio Cesar’s goal with a free throw shot that was well controlled by the Brazilian. Before half time, the first hint of trouble by the Internazionale team arose beforeminute 40, after Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari opened space at the right side and kicked with his left foot, which was well saved by goalkeeper Julio Sergio. With this last play, the first half ended 1-0 in favor of the visitor team. Immediately at the open of the second half, the Nerazzurri tied the game at minute 48, after a series of rebounds in the AC Roma’s area, where the ball was left to Thiago Motta, who then played with Eto'o. The Cameroons then with a turn around left-foot shot, scored for Inter and put the scoreboard 1-1. After that goal, Inter took control of the ball for the rest of the match, but to little avail; they couldn’t attack Julio Sergio’s goal successfully. The game finished with a 1-1 tie. After the match, Coach Mourihno stated he wasn’t happy with his team’s performance and the way they handled the game, but congratulated Roma’s game plan. “I like the point, as Roma had the quality to come here and win. I had the feeling it wouldn't be great for us so I put fresh legs in midfield, but even then in the first-half the performance was poor. If someone goes home tonight happy with what they achieved, it's because they have no ambition,” said Mourinho. On the other hand, Coach Claudio Ranieri said at the end of the game that he was satisfied with the team’s performance and praised the efforts of his players. “I am very happy with the team spirit and the hunger to do well, plus the standard of the football. Obviously one always wants more. We tried to go on the counter and conclude them, but every single time we were systematically hacked down,” said Coach Ranieri.

Will Guss Hiddink return to England

By: Michael

The EPL action returns this weekend after the very last break of the world cup qualifying matches that ended on a very controversial note thanks to, ‘The Hand Thiery Henry.

For the opportunist, many will see Russia’s failure to qualify for the world cup final as a blessing in disguise in tempting Guss Hiddink to makes a return to England. During his brief spell at Chelsea the man showed he understands English football and has what it takes to withstand the pressure of coaching a top level team.

With this option still open, it won’t be long before an English team expresses its desire to have Hiddink on board. Possible destinations might be Man City, Liverpool, Portsmouth or better still Everton. If a team has bought players and the transfer window is not anywhere close the only scapegoat a team has due to its bad performance is always the coach.

The big match is definitely at Anfield where Man City will be welcomed by Liverpool. Although both teams will be under intense pressure to pull a win the reds will carry the lion share of that pressure. Liverpool will try to replicate the victory they got when a certain team from Manchester visited them a couple of weeks ago.

In Five games Man City have accumulated five points, all courtesy of five draws and are really desperate for a win. They have proven that they can score goals but on the other hand they are not so good in defense. Liverpool’s big problem is preserving a lead once they attain one. Benitez gamble of opting to play defensive immediately after scoring has backfired.

Man Utd will try to put the memories of the loss they succumbed at the Stamford Bridge when they play Everton. After a disastrous start this season, Everton is slowly making a climb at the table standings.

Arsenal plays Sunderland who are in remarkable form compared to last season. The gunners will be missing the services of Van Persie, the man who has made a significant contribution to them this season, due to an injury he sustained at international duty. It will be interesting to see how they will cope with out him.

Will Liverpool lose its big four tag

By: Michael

Liverpool and Man City hopes of rejuvenating their title campaigns ended on a sad note when they shared the spoils at Anfield. A two all draw is not what Rafael Benitez or Mark Hughes certainly hoped to achieve after ninety of play. The match that could have easily been won by any side, were it not for the defensive lapses that were contributed by both defenses.

When the freshness of a season ends and a team is not able to replicate the remarkable performance it had the previous season then it calls for an urgent measure. It’s now a well-known fact that Liverpool has lost the touch and they are on a downward spiral.

The good thing is that they can create a surprise come back because the season is not even halfway. However, they need to shift their focus on the title and concentrate more on how to fix themselves in the fourth position, otherwise, the tag of being referred to as a Big four club will start fading.

Chelsea tightened the grip at the top of the English Premier League by comfortably winning against the Wolves by four goals. Although the blues were short of their first choice players they didn’t look as if they were missing them. After establishing a good command at their UEFA champion’s league group, Carlo Ancelloti number one priority, before the winter break, is to widen the premiership gap between them and the chasing teams.

So far, the blues is doing a very good job. Their challengers, who have title aspiration in their list of agendas, will need to strategize on how to counter them before they quickly run out of sight, with the title.

At the stadium of light, Sunderland needed a solitary goal to end Arsenal’s lengthy winning streak. Although the gunners controlled the game a lot, they lacked firepower that the injured Van Persie normally provides. They need to find a solution very fast because they host the highflying Chelsea in their next league game.

The defending champions, Man Utd, didn’t have any trouble getting their maximum points while playing at home against Everton. Darren Fletcher opened the scoring with a spectacular volley. The goal will definitely be in contention for the goal of the month.
