Tevez hattrick keeps Man City on course for fourth

London - Carlos Tevez grabbed a quickfire hat-trick against 10-man Wigan Athletic to give Manchester City a 3-0 victory and boost their bid to finish fourth in the Premier League on Monday.

City, five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur before kickoff, struggled until Wigan`s Gary Caldwell was shown a red card for a foul on Tevez after 56 minutes but finally clicked into gear thanks to the Argentine striker.

Roberto Mancini`s side moved to 56 points from 31 matches, two more than Liverpool who have played 32. Tottenham, who City still have to play at home, have 58 points from 31.

After spending vast sums of owner Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan`s money on signing the likes of Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz, fourth spot and a chance of Champions League football was the minimum requirement for City.

Tevez brought that possibility a step closer at Eastlands with an inspired second-half display which brought him three goals in 13 minutes.

Wigan, desperately trying to stay clear of the relegation zone, still looked dangerous after Caldwell`s slightly harsh sending-off but Tevez put City ahead on minutes when he tapped in as Wigan keeper Vladimir Stojkovic failed to gather a routine
ball under pressure from Adebayor.

Another simple finish made it 2-0 two minutes later and Tevez wrapped up the points with his best effort of the night, a classy finish after waltzing into the Wigan area.

Milan frustrated again, Juve win after protests

Milan - AC Milan wasted the latest in a series of chances to boost their Serie A title hopes when a depleted side were held 1-1 at home by Lazio on Sunday.

AS Roma beat leaders Inter Milan 2-1 on Saturday to cut the gap at the top to a point but Milan remain third rather than moving level with the Romans after another unconvincing display.

"This is a strange championship. There are lots of surprises," Milan coach Leonardo told Sky TV with seven games left. "I think the team did well. We conceded an unlucky goal."

Shortly after Clarence Seedorf had been denied following a fine move, Mathieu Flamini collided with Aleksandar Kolarov as he burst into the box and the referee awarded a soft penalty.

Marco Borriello, standing in as penalty taker with Ronaldinho suspended, converted from the spot on 18 minutes despite keeper Fernando Muslera getting a hand to the ball.

Milan, beaten at Parma on Wednesday, struggled to create other chances with Andrea Pirlo also suspended and were pegged back when Luca Antonini failed to clear a cross and Swiss winger Stephan Lichtsteiner scrambled in the leveller on 32 minutes.

Lowly Lazio, whose fans could be in trouble after racist chants towards Seedorf, had won two in a row but Milan will be kicking themselves yet again given Antonini hit the bar.

Felipe Melo earlier gave protesting Juventus fans a rare reason to cheer after heading the winner eight minutes from time in a 2-1 home victory over third-from-bottom Atalanta.

Supporters, angry the famous club is struggling to reach the Champions League next term, threw eggs at the team bus as it arrived at Turin`s half-empty Stadio Olimpico and unpopular right back Jonathan Zebina was then jostled.

Juve`s Alessandro Del Piero bent in a sublime free kick on half an hour after his side had made another laboured start, although David Trezeguet had a header ruled out for offside.

The hosts, who have made no marked improvement since Alberto Zaccheroni replaced Ciro Ferrara as coach in January, paid for their lacklustre approach when former striker Nicola Amoruso was left in space in the area to comfortably equalise on halftime.

Substitute Melo, ridiculed by fans as the latest expensive signing to flop, then nodded in Del Piero`s cross.

Atalanta, who had won their last two games to raise hopes of escaping relegation, could easily have scored again having exposed Juve`s shaky defence several times in both halves.

Juve, Napoli and Sampdoria are all three points behind Palermo, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League qualifying spot having beaten Bologna 3-1 on Saturday.

Napoli overcame Catania 1-0 at home thanks to Paolo Cannavaro`s goal but Samp missed the chance to hold fifth spot alone when they were held 1-1 at home by Cagliari.

At the bottom, Livorno look doomed after a 1-1 home draw with Bari left them seven points away from safety.

Second-from-bottom Siena dominated Genoa but drew 0-0 and lie six points behind fourth-from-bottom Udinese, who were hammered 4-1 at Fiorentina.

President says national soccer needs improvement

Malang - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said a national movement was needed to move the national soccer team forward.

"We have to improve the national soccer team and be optimistic that it will gain its glory both at national and international level," President Yudhoyono said at a function to open the National Soccer Congress 2010 (KSN 2010) at Ken Arok sports stadium in Malang, East Java, on Tuesday morning.

The head of state was of the opinion that a national movement with optimism was the only way revive the national soccer team.

Therefore, he called on all people of Indonesia to have one determination to moving the national soccer team forward.

According to the president, the progress of the national soccer team was not an impossibility because Indonesia has the human resources, talent, spirit, and the history of success.

"With our big population we have talent and thus there is no excuse whatsoever that Indonesia will not one day have good soccer players," the president said.

Meanwhile, all Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) Malang City General Chairman Peni Suparto said KSN was expected to give birth to a national soccer team which would become an "Asian Tiger".

He expressed concern with the current performance of Indonesian soccer which is practically "helpless" at ASEAN level.

Therefore, he said the KSN would produce recommendations to improve the national soccer system and improve the performance of the national team in international events, especially in Asia.

The idea to hold the KSN in Malang came from the President who was rather disappointed with the performance of the national soccer team which had been constantly declining, and even at ASEAN level, Indonesia could not do much.

Malang was chosen to host the event because the East Java tourist resort city managed to usher two national professional teams to the 2009/2010 LSI, and the achievement of Aremania (Arema`s supporters) which had been awarded the best supporter tile.

Later in the afternoon, the Head of State was slated to watch a football match between Arema Indonesia and North Jakarta Persitara at the Kanjuruhan stadium in Kepanjen, Malang.
