Italian Wins Climbathon, But Spaniard Takes Home World Series Title

Kundasang (Sabah) -- Spain's Tofol Castaner took home the men's title of the 2010 Skyrunners World Series after he amassed 347 points overall when the final leg of the series, the 24th Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon, concluded here today. Despite finishing third in the race up and down Mount Kinabalu, Castaner's 347 points was enough to bring home the trophy.

Italy's Marco De Gasperi won the race in a time of two hours 33 minutes and 56 seconds, setting a new Climbathon Men's Open record after beating the old record he himself had set in 2003 (2'36.59s).

Castaner clocked 2'58.09s, while Nepal's Sudip Kulung, who made his debut this year, finished second in 2'46.14s.

Spain's Jessed Hernandez finished second overall in the series with 324 points, ahead of fellow countryman Sebastian Sanchez Saez with 303 points.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's Safrey Sumping finished fifth clocking 3'02.47s, but hoped he had done better as last year he had clocked 3'00.22s to finish the race in ninth place.

Ronaldo fires unbeaten Real top

Madrid - Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain both scored braces as Real Madrid made it ten goals in two games with a 4-1 win at Malaga on Saturday to move top of the Spanish first division.

Portuguese star Ronaldo moved to the top of the goalscoring charts on six following his double and Jose Mourinho`s Real have the best attack and defence in the league lying a point ahead of Barcelona and Valencia at the summit.

Real are now the only unbeaten side in the league after champions Barcelona inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Valencia coming from behind to win 2-1 at Camp Nou.

Barca fell behind to a Pablo Hernandez goal on 37 minutes but turned the game around with a mesmerising second half thanks to goals from Spanish World Cup winners Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol.

"In the first half we didn`t have the ball and that was the key factor, however, equalising just after the interval was so important and really helped us," said goalscorer Iniesta.
Real responded by going a point above Barcelona and Valencia following up the 6-1 thrashing of Deportivo La Coruna with a 4-1 rout of Malaga.

Madrid hit the woodwork twice through Higuain and Sami Khedira before Higuain broke the deadlock on the half hour mark side-footing in a terrific cross-field ball from Ronaldo.

Ronaldo then got himself on the score-sheet with Mesut Ozil putting the ball on a plate for an easy tap-in.

Five minutes after the break Ozil was needlessly fouled in the penalty area and Ronaldo smashed home the resulting spot-kick for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Higuain grabbed his second and fifth of the season on 65 minutes and it could have been more as Real sent a warning to AC Milan who they host in the Champions League on Tuesday.

For Malaga it was another miserable home performance and they have lost all four of their home games so far.

Barcelona have been indifferent at home this season dropping five points in their first three matches, however, they got back on track with a crucial 2-1 home triumph over rivals Valencia.

Pablo Hernandez shot Valencia into a 37th minute lead but Barcelona produced a second half masterclass to turn the game around.

Two minutes after the break Iniesta surged forward before feeding Xavi who returned the ball to his team-mate who finished brilliantly.

Barca were a different side thereafter and David Villa had a header acrobatically saved
by Cesar Sanchez on the hour mark.

But two minutes later Carles Puyol met Xavi`s cross with a bullet header to put Barca ahead with what proved the winning goal.

Villa could have had a hat-trick against his old club -- where he spent five years before joining Barca for 40 million euros in the summer -- but found 39-year-old goalkeeper Cesar in great form.

"We had two clear chances in the first half but they levelled early in the second and that was a real handicap for us," said Valencia coach Unai Emery.

"Barca pushed us back after that even though we had the desire to attack and try and win the game."

Valencia hope to bounce back from this defeat with a Champions League group match at Scottish side Rangers on Wednesday while Barcelona host FC Copenhagen in their group game on the same day.

On Monday fourth-placed Villarreal can nudge Real Madrid, currently two points ahead, off the top providing they can beat promoted Hercules.

Earlier Atletico Madrid moved to within three points of the leading duo with a 2-0 win over derby rivals Getafe at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday.

An unfortunate own goal from goalkeeper Jordi Codina on 37 minutes and a Diego Costa strike on 72 minutes helped Atletico move fifth. (Uu.SYS/A008/R009)

Rescued Chile miners invited to Manchester United match

London - English Premier League football giants Manchester United have invited the 33 Chilean miners who survived weeks trapped underground to attend one of their matches, one of the team`s sponsors said.

The invitation was conveyed to Chilean President Sebastian Pinera in a weekend meeting in London with the club`s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Rafael Guilisasti, vice chairman of sponsor Vina Concha y Toro.

The miners were invited to attend a Premier League match at the team`s Old Trafford ground next year, said Vina Concha y Toro on Sunday in a statement.

Ferguson also presented Pinera with a signed team shirt from the club during the meeting.

"The courage, bravery and resilience of the miners and the rescue teams was inspirational. It is a privilege to be able to extend an invitation to Old Trafford," Ferguson was quoted as saying in the statement.

Pinera arrived in London on Saturday and will also head to Paris and Berlin during the visit, following last week`s dramatic rescue of the miners who were trapped for 69 days in a mine in the Atacama region of chile.

On Monday, he will meet Prime Minister David Cameron in Downing Street and Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace. (U.KR-BPY/H-AK/P003)

McLaren extend Vodafone deal

McLaren, who first teamed up with Vodafone back in 2007, confirmed the extended deal on Thursday which will see Vodafone remain as their official title sponsor while also becoming McLaren's total communications partner.

"Vodafone is without doubt the best title partner that we at McLaren have ever had," said McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh.

"Why do I say that? Well, the word 'partner' says it all. Vodafone is our partner in a very genuine sense of that word - a very real contributor to an ever-evolving series of high-tech innovations on our cars and within our operating systems."

"That's why I know I speak on behalf of all at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes when I say how delighted I am that our two companies have agreed not only to renew our partnership but also to relaunch it.

"As a result, we'll tirelessly develop our technological collaborations, at the same time as engaging Vodafone's customers in some truly innovative ways.

"I like to think that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is the most inclusive team in the world's most exclusive sport - and, with that ethos in mind, we'll be unveiling some very exciting Vodafone McLaren Mercedes marketing initiatives in the near future."

Bernie: I knew Korea could get it done

The Korea International Circuit was only granted a safety licence nine days ago, and cosmetic touches are today still being applied ahead of Sunday's inaugural Korean Grand Prix.

The Korean army have been drafted in to help with the completion of the erection of a number of grandstands that on Sunday will house a crowd between 90,000 and 100,000.

Ecclestone, though, always believed the organisers would deliver, and he is delighted with the end product.

"Considering what it was and what they've had to do, and this event has not been easy to do, I think they've done a good job," said Ecclestone.

"It's all there. If they hadn't have had their bad weather then it would have been done a long time ago.

"But I wasn't worried because I had some information they would get it done, and they've got it done.

"It would have been bad for Korea if it hadn't have happened, so they have made sure it happened.

"When you look at these facilities, and you look at some of the places we go to, and have been in the past, you can see what it took to build Formula One to what it is today."

One of the areas sorely lacking is accommodation with a number of less-than-salubrious motels being employed to house teams, media and fans.

That prompted an apology from Chung Yung-cho, the CEO of organisers Korea Auto Valley Operations.

"For the last couple of months we have worked hard, day and night," said Chung.

"If you are not 100 per cent satisfied please accept my apologies. I will do better for next year.

"We will prepare more hotels and facilities. I can guarantee we will work harder and you will have better."

As mentioned by Ecclestone, the weather wreaked havoc on plans as the circuit should have been completed by the end of July, in line with FIA regulations.

It is why, 24 hours ahead of Friday's opening practice sessions, there remain teething problems.

Up until late last night, a number of teams had no electricity in the garages.

Park Joon-yung, governor of the Jeollanam-do province, said: "We are finishing the cleaning of the circuit, and the infrastructure will be done by the end of the day.

"We were planning to finish this project in late July, however due to bad weather it delayed us.

"In April and throughout the whole of July we had a massive amount of rain, which is unusual for Korean weather, so that led to the delays in construction.

"Thankfully the weather was helpful in September and this month and we were able to work day and night to finish the construction."
