Crutchlow feeling ‘a lot of confidence’ for Le Mans

Cal Crutchlow heads to the fourth round of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship at Le Mans looking to build on the impressive form he has shown during the first three races.

The MotoGP rookie has enjoyed a fairly seamless transition from Superbikes this year, the Briton scoring a top ten finish in the wet at Jerez before matching that with an eighth place finish last time out in the dry at Estoril.

Going on to impress further by setting the fourth quickest lap time during the following Estoril test, though Le Mans represents another new circuit to learn, Crutchlow is arriving on a wave of confidence.

"I'm heading to Le Mans with a lot of confidence, even though it is another track I've only ever seen before on TV," the Tech 3 Yamaha rider said. "I know it won't be an easy task but Estoril was obviously another great weekend for me and then to finish fourth quickest in the test showed what I am capable of.

"Each time I get on the bike I am learning more and more and thanks to my guys at Monster Yamaha Tech 3 I've been able to make some big progress.

“I'm always determined to get the best result possible but this weekend definitely has extra significance being the Team's home race and Monster being title sponsor of the event. If I can replicate the results I achieved in Jerez and Estoril I'll be really happy."

Crutchlow is currently classified eighth in the overall standings.

Dovizioso targeting podium with new clutch

Andrea Dovizioso is hoping that a new clutch design for his Repsol Honda, which gave positive results at the post-race Estoril test, will help him claim his first podium of the season in this weekend's French MotoGP at Le Mans.

The Italian, a best of fourth (twice) in the three races so far this season, found that the new clutch reduced the RCV's hopping under braking, while bike set-up changes also enhanced stability.

“After the improvements made in the post GP test in Estoril, we arrive in Le Mans more competitive,” he said. “We will use the new clutch we tested in Portugal and take advantage of the set-up solutions tested there.”

Dovizioso has an encouraging record at Le Mans, finishing on the podium six times from his nine appearances in all GP classes - more than at any other circuit on the calendar.

Last season he snatched third place from team-mate Dani Pedrosa on the final lap.

“I have always scored good results on this track, last year we had a very good race finishing on the podium,” said Dovi. “We head to Le Mans determined to repeat it. Our target is the podium and to achieve it we need to work well from the first day.”

Dovizioso starts this weekend joint fifth in the championship with Nicky Hayden and one point behind Hayden's factory Ducati team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Fellow Repsol riders Pedrosa and Casey Stoner have both taken a race win this season.

The new NSF250R will be presented at 15:30 in the Relax Area of the MotoGP Paddock.

Holyfield faces Nielsen, hopes for another title

At the age of 48, Evander Holyfield just won't give up on his hopes of regaining the world heavyweight title.

The former undisputed champion resumes his longshot quest Saturday when he takes on Denmark's 46-year-old Brian Nielsen in a non-title bout in the Danish capital.

"My goal is to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world ... again," Holyfield (43-10-2) said.

In his last ring appearance, Holyfield was cut above the left eye by an accidental head butt in his fight with Sherman Williams in January. The bout was ruled a no-contest.

This time, trainer Tommy Brooks predicts Holyfield will beat Nielsen in two rounds.

"I think Evander is in a much better shape than (Nielsen) is in and we're going to take advantage of that," Brooks said. "The first mistake he makes, we're going to capitalize on that."

Holyfield, who held the world title four times, remained more cautious.

"I am going out to give my very best," he said. "I'll take one round at the time. Anything is possible."

However, he added, "if you hit people with a clean shot, people will fall."

The bout at the 2,100-seat Copenhagen Concert Hall was initially set for March 5 but was postponed to give Holyfield more time to recover from an injury.

"I have no problems at all. I have a scar that is all. I don't feel any pain," Holyfield told The Associated Press.

Nielsen (64-2, 43 KOs) is a highly popular figure in Denmark, where he is affectionately known as "Super Brian." He acknowledged that Holyfield was the favorite but promised the fight won't be a walkover.

"I know that he will be really tough to beat, but he won't meet someone who will throw himself onto the floor before him," said Nielsen, who lost 44 pounds (20 kilograms) for his first fight after nine years in retirement. "I will fight until I cannot stand up any longer."

Nielsen has been through a tough year.

Beside spending eight months in an intensive training camp in Germany away from his family, his wife Jeannette gave birth to twins while battling breast cancer. In March, Nielsen's 24-year-old son from a previous relationship, Steffen, was sentenced to 10 months in jail for assault.

"I feel ready, I can do it," Nielsen said.

Nielsen last fought in 2002 and retired soon after because of a knee injury.

The Dane won the lightly regarded IBO title in 1996 when he stopped Tony La Rosa in the second round. He also ended 47-year-old former champion Larry Holmes' hopes of a winning another belt in a successful title defense a year later.

Promoter Kalle Sauerland said all but "some 200" tickets have been sold for the fight. Ticket prices range from 1,500 kroner ($299)to 4,500 kroner ($896).
