Button Pips Vettel On Last Lap for 10th GP Victory

Montreal - What started out as one of Jenson Button’s worst days as a driver turned into his best as the Briton mounted one of Formula One’s great charges to steal victory from Sebastian Vettel in Canada on Sunday.

A gloomy, rainy day took a more miserable turn for McLaren when Button and team mate Lewis Hamilton came together, putting Hamilton into the wall and out of the race after eight laps.

A run-in with Ferrari’s Spanish double world champion Fernando Alonso, six visits to the pit lane – five regular stops and one drive-through penalty – added to a disastrous afternoon for the 31-year-old Briton before launching into what will go down as one of the sport’s most dramatic comebacks.

Slashing his way through the field after being left at the back of the pack, Button stalked Vettel over the closing laps – pressuring the German into an uncharacteristic mistake and pouncing when his rival’s Red Bull skidded wide.

“Eventually on the last lap I was chasing down Seb, he ran a little wide on the wet part of the circuit and I was able to take the opportunity and take the win,” a beaming Button told reporters.

“It was one of those grand prix where you are nowhere and then you are somewhere, then you’re nowhere again and then somewhere. Fighting your way through the field is almost as good as winning a race.”

Vettel, who had led the race throughout – surviving several race restarts after safety-car interruptions – hung on for second, ahead of Red Bull team mate Mark Webber, who also had to come from the back after being bumped off the track by Hamilton early in the race. Michael Schumacher drove a great race to finish fourth in his Mercedes.

Button classified his 10th career win as his greatest and few of those who sat through an afternoon of torrential rain that included a two-hour race delay would disagree.

“Amazing day, I don’t know what to say,” said Button. “It’s definitely my best race ... I’ll remember this for a long time.

“To be on the podium is a pretty exceptional result. The most action I’ve had in a Grand Prix, probably, and come away with a win. My first GP win was pretty special as it always would be ... but I would say this race is the best one I’ve had in my career.”

When McLaren arrived in Canada their hopes for victory rested on Hamilton, who had started on pole every race in Montreal, winning twice.

“The incident with Lewis, I couldn’t see anything when he was alongside me,” said Button. “I couldn’t see anything in my mirrors. It was one of those things and I apologized to him.” Reuters (Steve Keating)

Stoner shines on wet track at Silverstone

Casey Stoner, making his 150th Grand Prix start, became the first Honda rider to win three successive MotoGP races since Valentino Rossi in 2003 after dominating the Air Asia British MotoGP at a wet Silverstone circuit in The United Kingdom on Sunday.

Stoner left a wide gap of 15.159 seconds ahead of other racers after clocking 47’53.459s in the 20-lap race. Trailing in second and third place respectively were Stoner's teammate Andrea Dovizioso and Colin Edwards from Monster Yamaha Tech 3 with 48’08.618 and 48’14.939.

The premiere motorcycle racing championship was marred by dramatic accidents involving Marco Simoncelli, Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies, who fell victim to the soaked track due to continuous downpours from Sunday morning and chilling 11-degree Celsius temperatures.

“The conditions are indeed very difficult as the rains left water on some parts of the track,” Stoner said in the press briefing. “I became more confident after some time. I am happy with the win.”

The next fastest qualifier, Dovizioso, for Sunday’s second place repeated his success of when he also finished second last year at the same circuit.

Dovizioso admitted heavy pressure during the race.

“Stoner is really good. I just tried to start as fast as I could and stay ahead of the others,” he said, adding that he was complacent about coming in second, which equaled his best result last year.

Luck seemed to belong to Colin Edwards, who had qualified in eighth place just eight days after breaking his collarbone at the Catalunya Grand Prix.

“I have to thank my doctor for doing a terribly good job. It’s really hard to keep staying on the two wheels in such difficult conditions,” Edwards said.

Edwards said that his team mechanic had contributed a significant element to his podium glory.

“I had my bike in a completely different setup; lines and springs. And, that’s very good,” he said.

Sunday, however, overshadowed Simoncelli, who had his dream of becoming the first rider from a satellite team to win a MotoGP during the 800cc era dented.

Simoncelli, who battled out for a spot behind Stoner with Dovizioso, lost control of his bike in the 10th lap.

Similarly, Lorenzo, the only Yamaha rider to have started from the front row in 2011, also made mistake. Lorenzo highsided out of third position on lap 8, making the Silverstone race the first he did not finish since 2009.

Nicky Hayden, who headed the third row grid, finished fourth, followed by Alvaro Bautista, Valentino Rossi, Karel Abraham, Toni Elias, Hiroshi Aoyama and Loris Capirossi. (Damar Harsanto)

Stoner wins British GP to take overall lead

Australia's Casey Stoner won an incident-filled British MotoGP on Sunday to supplant defending champion Jorge Lorenzo at the top of the world championship standings.

Stoner, who started on pole, defied terrible racing conditions on a drenched Silverstone circuit to clinch a fourth victory in six rounds, becoming the first Honda rider to win three successive MotoGP races since Italian great Valentino Rossi in 2003.

Lorenzo was in second place when he crashed out on the eighth of 20 laps, seconds after teammate Ben Spies also fell. The heavy rain then accounted for Honda rider Marco Simoncelli on the 10th lap of the 5.9-kilometer (3.6-mile) course, with the Italian looking threatening in third place before skidding out.

"It was really tough conditions," said Stoner, the 2007 world champion who was starting his 150th grand prix in all categories and was quickest in practice on Friday and Saturday.

"Anything could have happened. We were quite lucky in this one that I stayed up and that Jorge had a crash."

Honda's Andrea Dovizioso was second, with Yamaha's Colin Edwards third.

Stoner's win lifted him 18 points above Lorenzo in the overall standings. Italy's Dovizioso stayed third but trimmed the gap to Lorenzo to 15 points with a third of the championship gone.
