Stoner shines on wet track at Silverstone

Casey Stoner, making his 150th Grand Prix start, became the first Honda rider to win three successive MotoGP races since Valentino Rossi in 2003 after dominating the Air Asia British MotoGP at a wet Silverstone circuit in The United Kingdom on Sunday.

Stoner left a wide gap of 15.159 seconds ahead of other racers after clocking 47’53.459s in the 20-lap race. Trailing in second and third place respectively were Stoner's teammate Andrea Dovizioso and Colin Edwards from Monster Yamaha Tech 3 with 48’08.618 and 48’14.939.

The premiere motorcycle racing championship was marred by dramatic accidents involving Marco Simoncelli, Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies, who fell victim to the soaked track due to continuous downpours from Sunday morning and chilling 11-degree Celsius temperatures.

“The conditions are indeed very difficult as the rains left water on some parts of the track,” Stoner said in the press briefing. “I became more confident after some time. I am happy with the win.”

The next fastest qualifier, Dovizioso, for Sunday’s second place repeated his success of when he also finished second last year at the same circuit.

Dovizioso admitted heavy pressure during the race.

“Stoner is really good. I just tried to start as fast as I could and stay ahead of the others,” he said, adding that he was complacent about coming in second, which equaled his best result last year.

Luck seemed to belong to Colin Edwards, who had qualified in eighth place just eight days after breaking his collarbone at the Catalunya Grand Prix.

“I have to thank my doctor for doing a terribly good job. It’s really hard to keep staying on the two wheels in such difficult conditions,” Edwards said.

Edwards said that his team mechanic had contributed a significant element to his podium glory.

“I had my bike in a completely different setup; lines and springs. And, that’s very good,” he said.

Sunday, however, overshadowed Simoncelli, who had his dream of becoming the first rider from a satellite team to win a MotoGP during the 800cc era dented.

Simoncelli, who battled out for a spot behind Stoner with Dovizioso, lost control of his bike in the 10th lap.

Similarly, Lorenzo, the only Yamaha rider to have started from the front row in 2011, also made mistake. Lorenzo highsided out of third position on lap 8, making the Silverstone race the first he did not finish since 2009.

Nicky Hayden, who headed the third row grid, finished fourth, followed by Alvaro Bautista, Valentino Rossi, Karel Abraham, Toni Elias, Hiroshi Aoyama and Loris Capirossi. (Damar Harsanto)
