LCR Honda sign Bradl on two-year deal

LCR Honda has officially confirmed the signing of 2011 Moto2 World Champion Stefan Bradl on a two-year contract.

The German rider tested with the MotoGP outfit at Valencia immediately after the final round of the 2011 season, and impressed Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello with his display on the RC212V.

Bradl will now make the step up to the premier class in 2012, riding a RC213V for the team, and Cecchinello said of the deal: “Next year will be very important for MotoGP. Starting from next April the Championship will be rich with new technical rules and participants.”

“Together with Honda we have considered several riders, and Stefan was one of our candidates. After the Test in Valencia we were very impressed by his potential and his determination. Stefan is young and fast and he just clinched the Moto2 World Title so we believe we can grow together within the Team in the next two years. He already knew the technical staff and today I am happy to give him our warmest welcome in the LCR Team!”

Bradl commented: “This is simply fantastic, like a dream come true! When I tested the RC212V in Valencia I realised that LCR Team is very professional and well organised so I am sure they will do their best to support me. Making my debut in the premier class aboard the RC213V is great and I cannot wait to get back on track.”

Bautista blogs from Experience Africa adventure

The Spanish rider submitted the first of several blog posts from his adventure with the humanitarian organization, Riders for Health. Bautista left for Zambia on November 23rd to join a group of people taking part in the ride through Zambia which continues until the end of the month.

Experience Africa,

I have just finished my second day in Zambia, and my first full day riding and seeing Africa. We arrived in Zambia and had a day to get used to the bikes that we would be riding. They aren’t quite as quick as the ones that I am used to, but they seem just right for where we will be going.

This morning we left Lilayi lodge before 9am and began our ride to the Moorings campsite, six hours away. This is my first time riding through Africa and it has been a real eye-opener. When you see how isolated the villages are and how bad the roads and tracks are, it is really obvious what an important job the motorcycles do, and how much they help the health workers.

We have ridden through villages and met lots of people, and what amazes me the most is how happy the children are that we meet. Although they have so little, they are so pleased to see us. It is the kind of excitement and happiness that children get in Spain when they see Santa.

I have been riding for just one day, and I have already had an incredible experience. I always knew that it was important to support Riders for Health when I donated items to the auctions, but to see what they do with the money is amazing.

I can’t wait until tomorrow.

Large Omani turnout at ISC table-tennis tournament

MUSCAT — The tremendous interest generated by the New India Assurance Open Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club Muscat can be gauged from the fact that table-tennis players from as far as Sohar, Ibra, Nizwa and Al Rustaq have driven down all the way to participate in this popular tournament which is presented by the New India Assurance Company and co-sponsored by Khimji’s Watches, Supa Sportsman LLC, Muscat Pharmacy (Pocari Sweat & Oronamin C), Oxygen, Times of Oman and Al Shabiba.

The tournament has touched a new high as far as the Omani participation is concerned.

Twenty-four Omanis youths have registered for the singles and three teams, Al Ittefaq from Ibra, Nizwa Club and Al Rustaq Club have entered the team championships. On a hectic day that saw the first rounds of the Omani singles being played, Mohammed bin Hamed Al Harthy of Ibra, Mohammed Fajwani of Muscat, Ali bin Khalfan Al Mandhari of Nizwa and Said bin Abdullah Al Kharusi of Al Rustaq reached the semifinals. Mohammed Al Harthy stormed into the last four by virtue of a brilliant 11-8, 12-10, 11-7 upset victory over the top seed Ahmed Al Barwani in the quarterfinal stage.

In other quarterfinal matches, Mohammed Fajwani justified his No. 4 seeding and entered the semis after defeating Wayel Al Barwani 11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 11-4. Said Al Kharusi of Al Rustaq Club struggled before defeating Mohammed Al Barwani 12-10, 10-12, 11-6, 11-8 to move into the last four.

Completing the semifinal line-up of the Omani singles was Ali Al Mandhari of Nizwa Club who scored a 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8 upset victory over third seed Khalid Al Barwani.

In earlier matches of the Omani singles, Mohammed Al Barwani defeated Khalid Al Harthy 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 11-9, Yaqdhan Al Barwani scored a facile 11-5, 11-3, 11-4 win over Mohammed Al Tobi, Wayel Al Barawani beat Yaqoub Al Mandhari 11-9, 11-4, 11-7, Mohammed Fajwani defeated Saoud Al Sulaimani 11-3, 11-7, 12-10, Khalid Al Barwani beat Mohammed Abdullah 11-6, 11-8, 14-12, Abdullah Al Barwani overcame Bassam Al Ismaili 11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, Yaqoub Al Fahdi rallied to defeat Munthir Al Barwani 9-11, 11-2, 12-10, 11-6, Ahmed Al Barwani won 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9 over Malik Al Fahdi and Mohamed Al Barwani fought back to defeat Ismail Al Sulaiman 9-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-8.
