Portuguese pole for Lorenzo on Bridgestone’s medium compound slicks

Using Bridgestone’s medium compound front and rear slicks during qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix, Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo secured his fifth pole position start on Bridgestone tyres.

Topping the timesheets for the second day running, Lorenzo’s best was almost one second faster than his time yesterday, putting the Mallorcan an impressive 1.2seconds faster than the existing circuit lap record.

Fellow Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi was second ahead of Ducati Team’s Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Colin Edwards of the Monster Yamaha Tech3 team. The best times of the top five riders were all faster than the existing lap record, further indicating the encouraging performance from the Bridgestone rubber at this traditionally tricky venue.

For most of the hour-long session riders favoured the harder of the available specifications (the medium compound front and hard compound rear), which are likely to be the favoured choice for tomorrow’s race, but as usual the fastest times came at the end of qualifying using the softer option rear for its extra traction.

Tohru Ubukata, Manager, Bridgestone Motorcycle Tyre Development Department, said:
“I am happy with the performance of our slick tyres today because we have seen the laptimes at the front of the field get faster again. Estoril has always been a tricky circuit for us but the tyres we have developed for this year have a wider operating range than those previously. This has benefits at every circuit we have visited this year, but because of the particularly varied nature of Estoril, the improvement in overall performance is more noticeable here.

“I think another key reason for the improvement in pace is the change of date of this grand prix from April back to the latter half of the season. As a result we are enjoying higher ambient and track temperatures which improves the grip of the circuit. We expected the higher temperature at this time of year, but what is unusual for this circuit is that the conditions are so stable with no cloud or wind, which can make the circuit dusty and slippery. If conditions remain the same tomorrow, the harder compound options will be favoured for the race because of the additional durability over race distance that they provide.”

Toyota targets Kubica, Kimi

Suzuka (Japan) - Toyota has confirmed it is targeting Robert Kubica and Kimi Raikkonen as drivers for the 2010 Formula One season.

The sought-after pair were widely considered to be destined for Renault and McLaren respectively, but Toyota was attempting to upset expectations and provide some urgently needed star power to the underperforming team.

Asked about possible interest in Kubica, currently of BMW Sauber, Toyota team principal John Howett said his team had an 'even chance' of snatching Poland's star driver away from the grasps of Renault.

'I definitely would be interested,' Howett said. 'We are probably fighting with (Renault).' Renault will announce a new driver next week to replace Fernando Alonso, who will join Ferrari in 2010.

That had prompted speculation the Kubica deal had already been signed, but the driver subsequently said he was not certain of his destination next season.

Raikkonen will make way for Alonso, and has said he would only be interested in joining a title-contending team in 2010. That may count against Toyota, which has not had a single race win in eight years in F1. But Howett confirmed he had sounded out the Finn.

Since the onset of the global economic downturn and the withdrawal of manufacturers Honda and BMW from F1, there had been ongoing speculation that Toyota might also pull out, notwithstanding that the team had signed the new Concorde Agreement between teams and F1 organisers which ties them to the competition to the end of 2012.

Howett confirmed Friday that next year's budget was likely to be reduced, but that did not preclude the team from competing for high-salary drivers.

'Its going to be less than this year, but still a very significant and substantial budget,' Howett said. 'If we buy a cheaper driver, we can employ that in other areas - its a simple equation.' -- AP

Ferrari reaches Alonso deal to replace Raikkonen

Ferrari reached an agreement to sign driver Fernando Alonso on Wednesday, replacing Kimi Raikkonen starting next season.

The Formula One team said in a statement the agreement is for three seasons with the two-time world champion.

Alonso and Felipe Massa will be Ferrari's drivers next year. Giancarlo Fisichella will act as backup.

"We are very proud to welcome to our team another winning driver, who has demonstrated his amazing talent by winning two World Championships in his career to date," the statement read. "Of course, we wish to thank Kimi for everything he has done during his time with Ferrari. In his first year with us, he managed to win the drivers' title, thus making his contribution to Ferrari's history, and he played a vital role in our taking of the constructors' title in 2007 and 2008.

"Even during a difficult season like this one, he has demonstrated his great talent with several good results - including a great win in Spa - and we are sure that we can share more good times together in the final three races of this season."

Alonso will join Ferrari from Renault, with whom he won the F1 title in 2005 and '06. So far in 2009, third place at the Singapore Grand Prix last week is his only podium finish.

"I am delighted and very proud to become a Ferrari driver," Alonso told reporters. "Driving for Ferrari is a dream for anyone who takes part in this sport, and today I am lucky enough to realize that dream."

Raikkonen joined Ferrari in 2007 from McLaren, winning the title in his first year and finishing third in 2008. He is currently fifth in the driver's championship, 44 points behind leader Jenson Button. The Finn is now expected to return to McLaren.

"With common consent, we have agreed to terminate the contract binding me to Ferrari to the end of 2010, one year ahead of schedule," Raikkonen said. "I am very sad to be leaving a team with which I have spent three fantastic years, during which time I won plenty of races.

"Together, we have won 50 percent of the world titles in that period and I managed to take the drivers' title in 2007, thus achieving the target I had set myself at the start of my career. I have always felt at home with everyone here and I will have many happy memories of my time with the team."

It has been a poor year by Ferrari's high standards. Raikkonen recorded the team's first podium finish at the Monaco GP, the sixth race of the year, and the Finn took its only win at the Belgium GP.

In July, Massa was sidelined for the rest of the season following a life-threatening accident at the Hungarian GP.

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher was initially brought back to replace the Brazilian but was stopped from racing due to an injury. Test driver Luca Badoer competed in the European and Belgian races before Giancarlo Fisichella was brought in for the rest of the season from Force India.
