Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson praises Nani

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Nani is finally starting to deliver on his potential after the 3-1 win over Arsenal.

The 23-year-old Portugal winger, who reportedly criticised Ferguson's management earlier this season, set up two goals in an impressive performance.

"Maturity is why we're seeing the best of him now," said Ferguson.

"His last three games have been absolutely first class but today was his best."

Signed from Sporting Lisbon in summer 2007, Nani has taken some time to settle at Old Trafford.

It seemed his future at the club could have been in doubt after he made just two appearances between the start of November and the end of 2009.

But he has started four of the United's last five matches and Ferguson believes his character is transforming as well as his form.

"He's a very shy boy and maybe his personality is getting stronger to play for us every week. Today was an example of that maturity," the Scot said.

Ferguson believes his side's ability on the break proved crucial in exposing Arsenal's weaknesses.

Ji-Sung Park and Wayne Rooney both scored from slick passing raids which caught the Gunners short in defence.

"Counter-attack has always been a part of our game," said Ferguson.

"Arsenal play a lot of good football and get to the edge of the box regularly, so if you can get the ball, you've got a chance against them."

Rooney's strike took his tally to seven from United's last five matches and it also means he has scored 100 Premier League goals - just the 18th player to do so.

The England international is five goals clear at the top of the Premier League scoring charts having already amassed more than last season's top scorer Nicolas Anelka managed in the whole of last term.

"Rooney was the key player in the sense they just couldn't handle him," Ferguson added.

"Everything was played towards him, in front of him or behind them and he was on to it every time."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger preferred to focus on his own side's shortcomings in his assessment of the match.

The Gunners were unbeaten in their 10 previous league games, but Sunday's result leaves them five points off leaders Chelsea having played a game more.

"We gave them too much room. We were naive. It is difficult to say straight after the game why we were not at our level," said Wenger.

"It is too early to analyse but I believe there are some mental reasons.

"It is a massive blow and a massive disappointment. The players wanted to win, they are really down. We have to recover from that. That is part of top-level football."

Transfer Window Closed for Inter Milan

Internazionale won’t make any more moves on the transfermarket during this transfer window. Chairman Massimo Moratti revealed that Inter won’t sign any more players in January.

“Inter’s transfer market is closed,” was Moratti’s clear comment.

Inter hoped to sign Julio Baptista but failed to reach an agreement with Roma for the transfer of the Brazilian international.

“Roma have taken a decision and we respect it,” said Moratti.

Lazio midfielder Cristian Ledesma was linked with a move to Inter to replace Patrick Vieira, who joined Manchester City. Moratti denied that they are interested in sigining Ledesma.

“We are not monitoring (Cristian) Ledesma or any other player who is not already at Inter.”

Inter have made just one signing this month with the arrival of former Lazio striker Goran Pandev as a free agent. Vieira and David Suazo (to Genoa) left the Nerazzurri during the January transfer window.

Ronaldo confident of appeal success

Cristiano Ronaldo does everything he can to be able to play against Deportivo la Coruna on Saturday. The Real Madrid forward received a two-match suspension for a red card he picked up at the weekend.

Ronaldo thinks the suspension is ‘excessive’.

On Tuesday, the disciplinary committee of the Spanish football league said the world’s most expensive player had been punished “for resorting to dangerous play that caused an injury” to an opponent.

It also fined Real 180 euros and Ronaldo 600 euros.

The former Manchester United player disagrees with this punishment and he’s confident that Real Madrid’s appeal will succeed.

“I wasn’t impressed about the suspension, of course,” Ronaldo was quoted as saying by AS newspaper on Wednesday.

“I sincerely believe the punishment is excessive,” he added. “I am confident in the appeal the club is going to lodge and that the punishment will be reduced.”

The Spanish Football Federation added that if Real’s attempts to get the ban reversed are unsuccessful he will miss Saturday’s trip to Deportivo Coruna and the home game against Espanyol the following weekend.

Juve coach rejects sack rumours

Under-pressure Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara has rejected rumors that he may soon lose his job following a poor string of results. Ferrara’s Juve lie in sixth place and trail league leaders Inter Milan by 16 points.

Juventus have lost five of their last six games in Serie A. Several sources in Italy claim Juve have finally lose patience with Ferrara and the Turin-based club has already drawn-up a list of possible replacements.

But when the under-fire 42-year-old coach was asked about his side’s upcoming match against Inter, Ferrara said, “I don’t feel on the verge of being sacked. I have not received any announcement from the club and until then, I will continue to do my job with the same spirit and professionalism as always.

“It hasn’t even crossed my mind to resign. When I look in the mirror every morning I am calm.

Ferrara said he feels that everyone at the club is behind him, a fact that has kept him from resigning from his post.

“I have acted on my conscience and that is why I have not presented my resignation.

“If the club and the players were against me, then I would have considered it but everyone is on my side.

“I only have to improve this situation by working even harder.

“I have not succeeded so far but it is not something to feel ashamed about.”
