Kovalainen on bed rest after ROC smash

Lotus’s Heikki Kovalainen is resting in bed on doctors’ advice after suffering a heavy concussion during his crash in Sunday’s Race of Champions (ROC) in Germany. He will undergo further tests in the next few days.

During his first heat of the individual ROC competition, in which he narrowly lost out to world rally champion Sebastien Loeb, Kovalainen clipped the barriers in his Audi R8, breaking its rear suspension.

The Finn also reported a jammed throttle and an ensuing spin sent him into the barriers. Kovalainen was knocked out briefly in the impact and withdrew from the remainder of the event to undergo medical checks.

Kovalainen’s passenger in the car was girlfriend Catherine Hyde. Initial reports suggested she had escaped unhurt, but subsequent examinations revealed a hairline fracture of the pelvis and muscle damage. Hyde has also been put on bed rest.

Alonso wins DHL Fastest Lap Trophy

The 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship was decided at the very last Grand Prix of the season on Sunday after a dominant drive from Sebastian Vettel, now the sports youngest-ever champion. The winner of the DHL Fastest Lap Award, however, is Fernando Alonso, who recorded five fastest laps during the season. Lewis Hamilton matched that figure, but Alonso holds the highest number of second-fastest laps.

Since 2007, the Formula 1™ Official Logistics Partner DHL has been the official presenter of the Fastest Lap Award, defining a new standard of speed. Ken Allen, Chief Executive Officer DHL Express, who handed over the award to Alonso said: “The fastest lap in a race is always a challenge. This is the result of speed, precision and teamwork. Winning the DHL Fastest Lap Trophy adds continuity and reliability to this. All these attributes found the basis for DHL’s express business as well.”

Former German F1 driver and RLT TV expert Christian Danner congratulated Alonso: “Fernando has driven an incredibly fast season in the Ferrari, which in most races wasn’t the fastest car. He has shown that, all things considered, he is a very strong and most complete driver in the field.”

Alonso succeeds Vettel, winner of the 2009 DHL Fastest Lap Trophy, and Kimi Raikkonen, who secured the trophy during its first two years. In 2007, the Finnish driver defeated his Ferrari team mate Felipe Massa with six fastest laps after a neck-and-neck race that was as exciting as this season’s. In 2008, Raikkonen sailed through with 10 fastest laps. Last year, Vettel secured his triumph at the very last second, making his penultimate lap the fastest of the championship finale at Abu Dhabi and catching up with Red Bull team mate Mark Webber on the home stretch.

Vettel gears up for celebratory run in Berlin

Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel will take to the streets of Berlin this weekend, as he celebrates his title success in front of his home fans. Vettel is expected to drive a Red Bull down the city’s famous ‘Fan Mile’ in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate on Saturday, before journeying to Dusseldorf for this weekend’s Race of Champions.

“I've always wanted to race through the streets of Berlin and on Saturday I’ll actually get to do it!” Vettel told his official website. “We'll turn the area between the Brandenburg Gate and Yitzhak Rabin Street into a pit and put the pedal to the metal! This is just my way of saying thanks to all my German fans for their support and their dedication throughout the whole season.

“Not everyone is able to see a Formula One racing car in action, so I think this is a great opportunity for everyone who wants to experience it. Besides the show run there will also be a drivers' parade, a stunt ride and the Red Bull Tourbus, so there should be something for everyone. I hope we'll have a great day and a spectacular weekend at the Race of Champions.”

Since his championship win in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, Vettel has visited Red Bull’s Austrian base in Salzburg and the team’s UK factory in Milton Keynes to celebrate his success. Last Sunday the young German also found time to visit his home town of Heppenheim to meet and greet thousands of fans.

Franz Tost Talks Toro Rosso’s Winter Plans

There hasn’t been an enormous amount of news over the past two days, but boss of Toro Rosso, Franz Tost, has been talking quite a lot. First up, he’s been bigging up Jaime Alguersuari, with this: “I think that he learned this season how to set up the car, how to drive the car, and I’m looking forward to the next season because I think he has matured enough to continue improving himself.” Good news. No mention of Buemi though. Franz Tost did point out that for the team to do better, it’s not just about improvement from the drivers, but also the car. He admitted they’ve got a long off-season ahead, with lots of hard work to do over the winter. He added: “We have a lot of work in front of us, but hopefully all these tasks we have set up. we will find a successful solution for them.”

Finally, in non-Toro Rosso news, Mario Theissen has left as boss of BMW. They’re not in F1 anymore, but Theissen is stepping down before the manufacturer joins in the DTM series. (Christine)
