Button 'shows Schumacher traits'

Championship leader Jenson Button is showing some of the same character traits as Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, says team chief Ross Brawn.

In 2004 Brawn and Button's team-mate Rubens Barrichello were at Ferrari when Schumacher won the first five races. In 2009 Button has won five out of six.

"Rubens has had his occasions when he beat Michael and he was a pretty strong reference," said Brawn.

"The fact Jenson's won these races with Rubens in the team sets the standard."

Brawn said the way Button had handled his latest win in Monaco was reminiscent of seven-time champion Schumacher in his prime.

"There was a bit in the race where Jenson was coming up to a group that were racing each other and we were talking on the pit wall and saying maybe he should ease the pace back a bit and not get mixed up in it," he said.

"And he came on the radio almost simultaneously and said 'Look guys, I don't want to get involved in that, what's going on in front, I'm going to ease back a bit'.

"So he's gaining in that mental capacity to do things as well as driving the car."

Button's 16-point lead over team-mate Barrichello means he is sure to be championship leader for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 21 June.

And having already won in Monaco, where he now lives, Button admitted he would get even more satisfaction from racing on his real home soil.

"I always love the British Grand Prix, it's obviously my proper home grand prix," he said.

"Turning up there leading the championship, it's going to be a nice feeling and hopefully I'll put on a good show in front of the home crowd."

Button signed a one-year deal with the Brawn team on considerably reduced terms after the demise of the old Honda team during the close season.

But such has been his instant impact that Brawn chief executive officer Nick Fry is keen to tie him down on a longer-term deal.

"Jenson's been with us a long time, and we've had failures and we've had successes," he said.

"My objective, and our objective, is to have him for the rest of his career, and nothing's changed on that front.

"It's mutual that he would like to stay with the team, and after five race wins, we should be able to get something together."

Raikkonen ready to go rallying again this weekend

After an impressive debut performance in January’s arduous Arctic Lapland Rally - he finished 13th - it seems Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen has caught the rallying bug. Swapping the snow of Finland for Italian tarmac, this weekend Raikkonen will take part in the annual Rally della Marca alongside co-driver Kaj Lindstrom.

“I'll race in a rally in Italy, in the Marca Trevigiana, and I want to thank the Scuderia that they gave me the possibility to take part in such a competition,” Raikkonen told Ferrari’s official website. “I really enjoy myself and it will be my first experience on the tarmac after some tests on snow last winter.

The shakedown for the Italian event will take place on Friday, ahead of Saturday’s race. "As I'm coming from the race track it will be interesting to see what I will be able to do behind the wheel of the Fiat Grande Punto S2000 on the roads close to Treviso,” he added.

Raikkonen heads to the rally on a high, after his return to the podium at last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. The Finn, who last finished in the top three at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, believes that the team’s efforts are starting to pay off and that a race win in 2009 is now a real possibility, if they continue to improve the F60.

“Being back on the podium is a nice reward for the whole team,” he added. “The hard work of the last few weeks has finally borne some fruit, which is really positive for all of us. We know that we're on the right way now. There are still some minor things to be done but sooner or later we will win.

"We'll show up with further improvements of the F60 in the upcoming races and we hope we can then challenge the leaders even more, in the qualifying and in the race.”

Ferrari powerless to halt Button and Brawn in Monaco

Jenson Button had no peer in Monte Carlo on Sunday afternoon. The world championship points leader snatched another full score as he grabbed the lead at the start, eased quickly away from Brawn team mate Rubens Barrichello, and romped home to a comfortable and totally convincing victory.

"Great job! Fantastic job!" his engineers cried over the radio at the end, as the 29 year-old Englishman whooped and hollered with delight.

There was not a single moment when he ever looked like losing this one, as he stretched his points score to 51, and his lead to 16 over Barrichello. His only error came following the chequered flag when, in his jubilation, he parked his car in the wrong parc ferme area and had to jog all the way to the podium like the triathlon runner he is. It was a pluperfect performance.

Barrichello kept his end up and reduced Buttons 12s lead to 7.6s in the closing stages, and he in turn was well clear of the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen which he had beaten off the start line and stayed ahead of apart from during the pit stops. Felipe Massa made it a good day for the Scuderia by keeping his F60 ahead of hard-charging Mark Webber in the sole surviving Red Bull as they battled for fourth place a couple of seconds behind the Finn.

Nico Rosberg had a feisty run to sixth for Williams, ahead of Renault's Fernando Alonso. Sebastien Bourdais took the final point for eighth place for Toro Rosso, just ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella's Force India after a race-long fight.

In Button's wake it was not a classic race. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel held fourth place early on until getting outfoxed by Massa and Rosberg, and after an early pit stop the German crashed at Ste Devote on Lap 15.

Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi blotted his copybook by running into the rear of Nelson Piquet's Renault there on Lap 11, both retiring. Heikki Kovalainen also crashed, dropping his McLaren in the Swimming Pool, in a very similar fashion to Massa in qualifying - only harder. It lost him seventh place on Lap 52. Late in the race Kazuki Nakajima lost tenth after nosing into the tyres at Mirabeau.

Timo Glock was thus tenth for Toyota, after a very long first stint which took him through to Lap 57 before he refuelled. He was followed by BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld, who was hounded to the flag by an unhappy Lewis Hamilton, who had earlier damaged his McLaren in a brush with the German at Ste Devote on the tenth lap. Nothing could have been a greater contrast for Hamilton with the 2008 race, and likewise for Button.

Behind the McLaren came Toyota's Jarno Trulli, whom Hamilton passed on Lap 75, and Adrian Sutil's Force India. BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica made a poor start, and was the first pit stopper before later retiring with mechanical gremlins.

Gibernau has surgery, targets Catalunya

Sete Gibernau has targeted a return to action for the Catalunya Grand Prix after undergoing surgery to secure a transversal displaced fracture to the middle of his left collarbone.

The Spaniard sustained the injury in a crash at Le Mans during the second French Grand Prix free practice session of the weekend.

Ruled out of that event, Gibernau will also miss the upcoming round at Mugello in Italy after having a plate and screws fitted to rejoin the bone in an operation at Dexeus Institute in Barcelona.

Although there is no word on whether the Grupo Francisco Hernando Ducati team will seek a replacement for Mugello, doctors are confident Gibernau will be fit in time to compete in the Catalunya Grand Prix in four weeks time.

Haga takes race 1 win at Kyalami

Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox) clinched his fifth win this year with a commanding performance in race 1 at Kyalami. After two days of being slightly overshadowed by his main rivals, the points leader came good in the race and from the mid-point onwards ran towards the chequered flag with ease. Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) and Ben Spies (Yamaha World Superbike) had to settle for the other two podium slots, in that order, after a mid-race battle that was decided when the American made a slight mistake, his foot slipping off the pegs. From that point on the runner-up slot was Fabrizio's. Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) and Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) had quite a scrap for fourth place, with the British rider getting the nod over the Italian. Biaggi once again showed he had the speed and the pace to fight for the podium, but he lost contact with the leading trio when he was stuck behind Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) for a couple of laps, the Spaniard eventually finishing sixth overall. Shinya Nakano took the second Aprilia to a positive seventh place ahead of Yukio Kagayama (Suzuki Alstare), while BMW had a race to forget, with Ruben Xaus crashing out and Steve Martin the final finisher.

Pedrosa delighted with pole in France

Dani Pedrosa was overjoyed to have claimed pole position for this weekend's French Grand Prix. The Barcelona-born rider claimed the top spot at Le Mans for Repsol Honda, setting a fastest time which was just five thousandths of a second quicker than compatriot Jorge Lorenzo's Yamaha.

The 23 year-old has endured a tough start to the 2009 season, with a host of injuries, but was beaming after Saturday's rain-free session, a rarity in 2009. "Obviously I'm really happy with pole today and it was a very close battle for the front row," said Pedrosa. "Right at the end we were able to set the fastest lap and I'm really pleased for the team, as well as for myself. Being on the front row is important and it's also lucky that we had good weather for this afternoon, and for most of the morning session, because it allowed us to test a few setup options and learn more about the machine at this track."

Behind the two Spaniards will be championship leaders Valentino Rosso and Casey Stoner, with - unlike in the standings - the Australian ahead of the Italian on the grid. "We still have work to do before the race, so we're not going to relax at all," Pedrosa confirmed. "It's a long race tomorrow and there are some improvements I'd like to make to the machine settings to give us a good chance.

"Of course the weather can play a big part at this circuit as we've seen many times before - we have to prepare for many conditions, so we're staying focused."

Button ready to fight in Monaco

Brawn GP driver Jenson Button is ready to defend his championship lead in the streets of Monte Carlo. Button has said he will need to be a bit more aggressive at the unique track to finish in the top three in Monaco.

"I won't be pussyfooting around. I know I need to be a bit more aggressive and scrap for every point. If I get it right I can see myself on that top step," Button told The Daily Star in an interview. "You could say I've had my ups and downs here.".

It's going to be tough, but I'll be full of confidence. Monaco is a bit like Barcelona and I've usually struggled on tracks like that. But my win last week in Spain has boosted my confidence. I have always been a bit too cautious at places like these, so I have to alter my style and attitude a bit.

"As long as I stay off the barriers I have a very good chance of changing my bad luck in Monaco. But I won't be hanging back waiting for a win to happen. I'll be going for it - and it'll be the same right to the end of the season."

Renault issue team statement

The Renault Formula One team and parent company Renault issued the following statement on Wednesday:

The decision of the Federation International de l’Automobile (FIA) to introduce two sets of Formula One technical regulations for the 2010 Formula One season has caused the Renault Group to reconsider its entry in next year’s FIA Formula One World Championship.

There is frustration that FOTA’s constructive proposals, including major cost saving measures to be adopted progressively between 2009 and 2012, which were carefully constructed by FOTA members, have been completely ignored without any form of consultation by the FIA with the teams.

It should be stressed that FOTA has set the same, if not lower, financial objective as the FIA, but Renault strongly believes that this must be introduced through a different procedure agreed by all parties.

Renault also believes that it is paramount that the governance of the sport is coordinated with a spirit of consultation with all parties (FIA, FOM, FOTA) in order to achieve a better balance between the costs and the revenues. Renault is also of the firm view that all entrants in the World Championship must adhere to and operate under the same regulations.

President of the ING Renault F1 Team, Bernard Rey, commented: “Renault has always considered Formula One as the pinnacle of motor sport and the perfect stage to demonstrate technical excellence. We remain committed to the sport, however we cannot be involved in a championship operating with different sets of rules, and if such rules are put into effect, we will be forced to pull out at the end of this season.”

ING Renault F1 Team Managing Director, Flavio Briatore, commented: “Our aim is to reduce costs while maintaining the high standards that make Formula One one of the most prestigious brands on the market. We want to achieve this in a coordinated manner with the regulatory and commercial bodies, and we refuse to accept unilateral governance handed out by the FIA. If the decisions announced by the World Council on the 29th of April 2009 are not revised, we have no choice but to withdraw from the FIA Formula One World Championship at the end of 2009.”
