A week after claiming his first World Superbike Championship title , Italian Max Biaggi is looking to add the constructors title for Aprilia at the final round of the season at Magny-Cours circuit in France.
The veteran rider needs just nine points from the two races this weekend to land the title for Aprilia, only two years after the manufacturer entered the sport with the RSV4 machine.
Max Biaggi is now 39 years old and seems to have been around forever, for me it has been fantastic to see the Italian at last fulfill his promise and land the World title and it would be a personal triumph for the rider if he can claim the manufacturers prize for his team as well.
The 2010 World Superbike Champion Max Biaggi said;
“It would be truly exceptional to be able to place the manufacturer world title next to my rider world title. Most of all I think it would be a great reward for the guys on the team and the entire racing division who, together with me, have given a performance this season which will go down in the history of our sport. As always, we will be giving it our all.”
Meanwhile Britain’s Leon Haslam who was pipped for the title by Biaggi, will ride his last race for the Suzuki Alstare satellite team having secured a ride with BMW next season.
Fellow Brit James Toseland will also bid farewell to his current employers at Yamaha this weekend although he has yet to secure a ride for next year. Rumours are that he could rejoin the Ten Kate Honda team where he won his second World Superbike title in 2007.
Chris Vermeulen back on track in Kawasaki test
Kawasaki were the first of the World Superbike teams to get on the track in 2011 with a planned four day testing at Sepang where they will hope to iron out any problems with the new ZX10R.
Among the riders taken to Malaysia for the test outing was Chris Vermeulen, taking his first ride aboard a race spec bike since undergoing surgery on a knee injury sustained in the opening round of the 2010 season almost a year ago.
Vermeulen had the surgery later in the season in July 2010 and has spent the last six months recuperating, he said that he has only started walking in the last three weeks.
His test ride aboard the Kawasaki ZX10R cheered the rider no end, although rain hampered his progress during the afternoon and he will be looking forward to further testing today.
Pleased with his first impressions of the Kawasaki Vermeulen admitted that his knee still has some way to go before full recovery saying that although it had improved a lot over the last couple of weeks, he cannot bend the knee enough at present on right hand corners.
Kawasaki team mates Tom Sykes and Joan Lascorz were also on track in Sepang during the private testing, ahead of the official first test in Portugal at the Portimao circuit on January 26th.
Castrol Honda return to World Superbike
The official Castrol Honda launch took place in Berkshire this week at the Castrol Technology Centre, giving the media their first chance to see the Honda in its iconic Castrol livery.
The Castrol Honda team will be run by Ten Kate Honda and their riders for the upcoming 2011 season have been long announced as Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus.
The team and riders are currently in Aragon putting the new machine through its paces and checking out the new chassis components as well as evaluating the new electronics on the Honda.
It is eight years since the Castrol Honda livery was last seen in World Superbike, back in 2002 when Jonathan Rea was still a schoolboy and he remembers rushing home from a motocross competition to watch Colin Edwards beat Troy Bayliss at Imola that season in which Edwards won the World Superbike Championship.
The young rider will be hoping some of that magic rubs off for him this season, he has after all already shown that he has the potential to reach the top at this most competitive level of motorcycle racing.
Sharjah Cricket Stadium to come alive again
Sharjah - Sharjah Cricket Stadium may soon come alive again by becoming the venue for a Test match and One-day international. Plans are on to get the stadium ready for Pakistan’s Test and One-day series against Sri Lanka set to commence in October.
Speaking to Gulf News, Abdulrehman Bukhatir, who brought international cricket to UAE in the early eighties and went on transform this stadium into a venue, which hosted the maximum number of One-day internationals in the world, said: “It has been proposed to the Emirates Cricket Board to consider Sharjah as a venue during the Pakistan series and it is being discussed.”
Pakistan will host their Test and One-day home series against Sri Lanka in October and their series against England in January in UAE owing to security reasons.
”Sharjah is a venue which has hosted over 200 One-dayers and I feel it deserves to continue hosting international matches,” added Bukhatir.
The Pakistan’s series against Sri Lanka and England will comprise three Test matches, five One-dayers and one Twenty20 match. Sharjah hosted its last Test match in October 2002 between Pakistan and Australia.
The last One-day match between Test playing nations was held in April 2003. The tournament was called the Cherry Blossom Sharjah Cup involving Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Kenya. International matches came to a standstill after this venue staged 198 One-dayers. However, the venue crossed the 200 mark by staging two One-day matches between Afghanistan and Canada last year. Incidentally, Sharjah stadium is also the home ground of the Afghanistan team which is also unable to stage its matches at home due to security reasons.
Mazhar Khan, the secretary of the Sharjah Cricket Council and Administrator of the Emirates Cricket Board, said: “Everything will be done to make the stadium look as good as in the past. We will overhaul all the facilities including the seats for the spectators.”
Sharjah has a seating capacity of 27,000 though over 30,000 fans used to watch the action in the past.
“We are sure if the Pakistan matches are held here, the turn out will be excellent as we get a full house here even for our Ramadan matches. For the night matches we will repair some of the floodlight bulbs. It is mandatory that floodlights are available for even Test matches,” added Khan.
When asked whether International Cricket Council’s approval will be required for resumption of international matches between Test playing nations, Khan said: “The wickets are match fit because domestic tournaments are regularly played on it and Associate and Affiliate nations have also been playing matches on it. If we get the approval then we will keep aside wickets for Test and One-day matches from domestic matches.”

UAE to confirm entry into Asian Qualifiers
Abu Dhabi - Sitting comfortable with a 1-0 first leg win over DPR Korea, hosts UAE will be looking to confirm their entry into the league phase of the Asian Qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympics when the two teams meet in the return leg in Al Ain tonight.
The UAE team, which scored a 56th minute against the Koreans in Pyongyang last week, will be going in as the favourites to clinch a berth in the group stage.
Emirati Mahdi Ali, coach of the UAE team said his side will adopt the same approach and will be looking for a win.
"The team is in good spirits, we have no injury problems and we are confident of putting up a good show," the highly-successful Emirati coach said.
Ali's side boasts of some of the finest players which include Ahmad Khalil, Hamdan Al Kamali, goalkeeper Adel Al Hosani, Theyab Awana and Omar Abdul-Rahman.
Korean coach Jo In-Chol skipped the pre-match press conference and the team's media officer said the heat will be a disadvantage for the visiting side. "Though the players will find the climate a little too tough the players are all focused and keen to reverse the result. They are desperate to qualify and they will fight hard," he said.
The winner of this two-legged first round encounter will advance to a four-nation group, one of the three for the second round. The winner of the three groups will advance to the London Olympics while the three runners-up will play each other in a play-off. The winner of that play-off will play the fourth-ranked team from Africa in another play-off for a spot at the Olympic Games.

Scorched 3D is a game based loosely (or actually quite heavily now) on the classic DOS game Scorched Earth “The Mother Of All Games”. Scorched 3D adds amongst other new features a 3D island environment and LAN and Internet play. Scorched 3D is totally free and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris, etc.) operating systems. You can pick up the game and begin playing very quickly. USA legends visit Indonesia
Jakarta - US Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Marciel gave welcoming remarks in the Embassy courtyard for the USA Legends who are visiting Indonesia under the sponsorship of the Development Basketball League (DBL), the US Embassy here said in its website on Tuesday.
The USA Legends then hosted a coaching clinic with sixty orphans and high school students from the Jakarta area at the U.S. Embassy basketball courtyard.

Semarang, Central Java - The Djarum Kudus badminton club has set itself the target of making its athletes qualify for the main round of the Indonesia Open badminton championship Primary Super series in Jakarta on June 21 through 26, 2001.
Head of Djarum Kudus badminton club Yoppy Rosimin said here on Friday, the badminton championship with prizes totaling US$ 600,000 will also be participated in by badminton players ranked 28th in the world.
Therefore, Djarum Kudus players who are ranked 50th in the world would have to fight hard to qualify for the main round, he said, explaining that Djarum Kudus will feature nine athletes who will compete in the man`s singles, woman`s singles, women`s doubles, men`s doubles, and mixed.

Kupang, E.Nusa Tenggara - As many as 22 countries have confirmed their plans to participate in Sail Indonesia 2011 that was officially launched in Jakarta a few days ago, a local marine official said.
The number of participants has increased compared to Sail Indonesia 2010 when only 15 countries took part, the chairman of Cinta Bahari Indonesia Foundation (YCBI), Raymond T. Lesmana, said here Saturday.
"There are more participants for Sail Indonesia 2011 than last year. If in 2010 there were only 15 countries, now the number has increased to 22," he said.
According to Raymond, the Sail Indonesia participants were scheduled to depart from Darwin, Australia, on July 23 and expected to arrive in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara`s provincial capital, on July 27 to 28.
The participants will be in Kupang for a week before they sail on to Alor, Rote Ndao, Sabu Raijua, Lembata, Ende and Labuan Bajo districts on Flores Island and elsewhere in Indonesia.
"We expect the participants will be in East Nusa Tenggara province about a month because there are a number of such new areas to be visited by the participants as Sabu Raijua and Rote Ndao," Raymond said.
He said, the foundation is coordinating with several district administrations, especially the new area ones that will be stop off to perform a variety of preparations.
In addition, Sail Indonesia 2011 which will make Kupang as the entrance to the other regions in Indonesia will focus on areas that have not yet been visited.
The regions are Ndao Rote, Sabu Raijua to Sumba island which have been less had the opportunity to stop off by the Sail Indonesia participants.
"In previous years, the transit route is always monotonous namely the northbound lane through the East Flores to West Flores. Now we are trying to open new destinations," Raymond noted.

FIFA VP : football must be void of political elements
Jakarta - The vice president of the governing body of world football FIFA, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, said football must be free from political elements.
"It must not be mixed up with political affairs," he said after meeting with Indonesian Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng at the latter`s offfice here on Tuesday.
The two met to discuss among other things the planned congress of the All Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) next month to elect a new PSSI executive board.
It is hoped the next congress in Solo, Central Java, on July 9 will be successful and able to elect a new executive board to open a new page in the country`s history of football.
The Normalization Team established by FIFA failed to elect a new PSSI board earlier following disputes over figures allowed to become the PSSI chief.
Prince Ali said "football development in Indonesia is very good as was shown in the last AFF championship. People are very enthusiastic."
The prince from Jordan said in view of the huge enthusiasm in football in the country he would support fully in the development of the popular sport in the country by facilitating proposals for FIFA programs.
Besides meeting with the sports minister Prince Ali is also scheduled to meet with the general chairperson of the Indonesia National Sports Committee (KONI) and the Indonesia Olympic Committee (KOI), Rita Subowo, vice president Boediono, army`s chief of staff General George Toisutta, the Normalization Committee and congress voters. Crutchlow doubtful for Dutch GP after breaking collarbone
London - Britain’s sole MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow is doubtful for next week’s Dutch round at Assen after having a titanium plate and several screws inserted in his shoulder.
Yamaha said in a statement on Thursday that the Tech3 rider, who fell in qualifying for last weekend’s wet British Grand Prix at Silverstone, had broken his left collarbone in five places.
Surgery was delayed while the 25-year-old was assessed for a neck injury, with scans then showing no damage.
“Crutchlow has already started the recovery process with intensive physiotherapy, but it is too early to know whether the 2009 World Supersport champion will be fit to participate in the Dutch Grand Prix,” Yamaha said.
Crutchlow said doctors were happy with how the surgery had gone but he was still in a lot of pain. “Unfortunately, the break is a lot worse than the one my team–mate Colin Edwards had in Catalunya and I’ve got different pain and movement levels,” he said.
“I’ve spent two days lying on my back with a suspected neck injury, so my shoulder just got swollen...I don’t know if I will ride in Assen. We will have to wait and see, but I’ll be trying 100% to be there if I can.”
American team–mate Edwards finished third at Silverstone, little more than a week after the 37-year-old broke his right collarbone in Barcelona in practice for the Catalan GP.
In Madrid, doctors have told Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa he needs a second operation on his broken collarbone.
“During the rehabilitation process ... a very small fragment of bone moved, therefore to aid faster healing doctors will proceed to fix this fragment,” his Repsol Honda team said on Thursday.
The injury-prone 25-year-old first underwent surgery when he had a titanium plate inserted in his collarbone after a fall in the French GP at Le Mans last month.
Pedrosa missed his home race in Barcelona and the British Grand Prix and is fifth in the championship standings on 61 points after six races.
Team–mate Casey Stoner of Australia leads the way on 116 points with champion Jorge Lorenzo of Spain on 98 in second. Italian Andrea Dovizioso is third with 83.

Mission accomplished for defending champion McDowell
Defending champion Graeme McDowell said he accomplished his mission on Thursday by putting himself in the thick of the hunt in the first round of the US Open golf championship.
The Northern Irishman posted a one-under 70 at Congressional Country Club to put his name on the leaderboard among the early starters.
“I felt really good this morning. I felt normal,” said 31-year-old McDowell, who won his first major at last year’s US Open at Pebble Beach. “It felt like a regular major championship. It didn’t feel like I was defending anything.
“I set myself some challenges this morning, to go out and try ... to go through my processes correctly, through my routines, and just be patient and enjoy the round.”
McDowell bogeyed the first hole but bounced back with a birdie at number two and another at the par-five sixth. He parred the next 12 holes, narrowly missing on a few good birdie opportunities, to complete a solid 70.
The Briton said it was not all smooth sailing, as he had to navigate changing conditions as winds picked up.
“Holes like 15 and 16 played different than what we saw in practice. I hit nine-iron on 15, and in practice I’ve been going on with three- and four-irons. You had to adapt your game plan a little bit,” he said.
“But I kept it in play well. I played smart golf. My iron play could have been better, but all in all, very happy with most departments today.”
McDowell also experienced something out of the ordinary at the ninth hole, where he had to mark his ball on the fairway after British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen’s approach shot nestled right next to the Northern Irishman’s ball. – Reuters
