Hamilton Adamant Over McLaren's Strength

Lewis Hamilton is adamant Mclaren are the strongest team in Formula One, and the reason why he will quickly be back in the hunt for wins.

Hamilton produced one of the performances of his career to finish third in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix from 18th on the grid, and in a car he revealed afterwards is the worst he has driven.

McLaren have made no secret of their mistakes in the design of the car, and that around Melbourne's Albert Park proved difficult for reigning world champion Hamilton to handle.

Given the back-to-back nature of the opening two races, Hamilton has already made it clear there will be little or no improvement for this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix.

But you cannot shake his fundamental belief McLaren will find a way of correcting their faults sooner rather than later because, as he said: "We haven't forgotten how to win.

"In fact, we're a world-class team, while we're not yet at the front, everything within the McLaren Technology Centre is equipped to help us get back there as quickly as possible.

"From the strategists, the manufacturing capacity, the management, the mechanics - everybody has what it takes to win grands prix and world championships.

"That's why I'm so confident that we'll get back to the front soon.

"I think we are the strongest team in Formula One, and I know just how hard we are focusing on improving our car.

"That's why I feel so confident our performance will improve."

Allied to Hamilton's natural ability, then McLaren are in with a shout of proving their star driver correct.

Circumstances played into Hamilton's hands in Melbourne, but he too played his part with a drive that resulted in team principal Martin Whitmarsh describing it as one of a world champion.

"I learnt to never, ever, ever, give up," said Hamilton, when asked as to the lessons he carried with him out of the race.

"We showed in Brazil last year we would always fight until the very end, and we showed it again in Melbourne. I'll never give up when I'm in the cockpit.

"I want to race as hard as I can and I'm looking forward to getting closer to the front and mixing it with the leaders again."

Sadly, he knows that will definitely not be happening in Malaysia this weekend unless lady luck is riding with him.

Again discounting his chances, he added: "As this is the second of two back-to-back flyaway races, it's difficult for any team to make big changes to the car when it's so far away from the factory and there's so little time.

"Also, technically speaking, Sepang is a harder test of a Formula One car than Albert Park, so we can't realistically expect a repeat of the result we saw in Melbourne.

"But we're targeting upgrades and improvements at every race, so I hope they'll have a benefit.

"I know people are hoping for a night-and-day change in our car's pace, but that's not going to happen this coming weekend."

Alonso expecting good things at Sepang

Fernando Alonso is expecting a more positive performance in this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix, as the Renault driver heads to Asia with four points in his pocket after collecting fixth place in Melbourne. The former double World Champion is satisfied with the car's performance in Australia, but is expecting more of the R29 in Kuala Lumpur.

"As usual, the first race of the year was quite eventful and in the closing stages we were able to take advantage of the incidents to move up into fifth position," Fernando explained. "Although it's nice to have the points, we know that we must work hard to improve the car and we have the belief that we can do that."

The Spaniard is widely viewed as one of, if not the most complete driver in Formula One, with a Schumacher-esque ability to drive every lap of a race on the limit, but he would still like to see an increase in raw pace from the car. "In Australia we struggled in qualifying and our race suffered as a result," he confirmed. "We need to qualify well so that we can have a strong race, by making sure we get the most from our KERS system at the start because there is a long run to the first corner in Malaysia, where it should make a big difference."

Like most, Alonso is also concerned as to whether his tyres will hold up during the race although, with rain expected, the use of two dry compounds will not apply if the Grand Prix is declared a 'wet race'. "Tyres will be particularly important in Malaysia, where the track temperatures will be very high, so we need to see how the tyres perform in these conditions. " he continued. "Sepang is totally different to Melbourne and so I expect our car to be more suited to the circuit; it's a special track for me, as I've won there twice, and is probably my favourite circuit so I always enjoy racing there."

Glock preparing for sultry Malaysia

Timo Glock is ready for his second big challenge of the week, as the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix are back-to-back for the second consecutive year. The German's first race at humid Sepang took place in 2008, leading only to retirement on the first lap after a collision with Nico Rosberg.

"I don't have much experience of racing in Malaysia because I was taken out so early last year," Glock recalls, "but from practice and qualifying I know the conditions are quite extreme. It's pretty tough on the cars and tyres as well, but I can adapt quickly to different conditions and different tracks so I'm ready for the challenge."

Timo is experiencing a positive start to the new season; having raced to fourth place in Australia on Sunday, he enjoyed a spirited battle with Fernando Alonso which ended as the German passed the Spaniard around the outside of Turn 4. "I said before the season started that our car looked pretty good and the performance we showed in Australia proved that," he continued. "It's great to have good points on the board already this season, and my goal is obviously to add to that this weekend. We have every reason to be optimistic."

Senna to replace Fisichella at Force India?

Vijay Mallya has hinted that Bruno Senna could be of interest to his Force India team as Giancarlo Fisichella heads towards the end of his Formula One career. Senna was denied an F1 race seat for 2009 when the Brawn team elected to retain its line-up of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, although the Indian billionaire has a high opinion of the Brazilian Senna.

"I know that Giancarlo is reaching the end of his racing career - it may not be his last year this year but he is certainly at the tail end of his career. " the Kingfish supremo told The Observer. "There are youngsters waiting in the wings; one of them is Bruno Senna, and we all thought he would be signed by Brawn GP but they went with Barrichello - we will look at the youngsters at the appropriate time."

Senna - nephew of three-time World Champion Ayrton - was disappointed at the lengthy wait for Brawn's eventual decision, but has since tested for Mercedes in DTM will be taking part in his first Le Mans Series race in Barcelona this weekend.
