Usai menerima kritik dari berbagai pihak, Kanselir Jerman Angela Merkel akhirnya membatalkan lockdown Covid-19 pada libur hari raya Paskah. Padahal, sebelumnya dia telah mengumumkan bahwa 16 negara bagian setuju untuk memberlakukan lockdown selama libur Paskah guna menekan efek gelombang ketiga Covid-19.

Keputuran lockdwon pada tanggal 1-3 April akan ada “hari istirahat” dengan tidak ada toko apapun yang beroperasi. Idenya didasari atas niat baik guna menghambat gelombang ketiga pandemi Covid-19. Keputusan ini membuat publik, politisi, dan pengusaha menjadi frustasi. Mereka menilai Merkel kebingungan mengendalikan pandemi karena tidak memiliki rencana, petunjuk dan keberanian. Bahkan Dietmar Bartsch, kepala oposisi partai kiri Linke, mengusulkan mosi tidak percaya terhadap Merkel yang dinilai sudah tidak bisa lagi memerangi pandemi Covid-19.

Pernyataan Bartsch didukung oleh survei terbaru yang menunjukkan popularitas partai konservatif Merkel terus menurun dan telah mencapai titik terendahnya menjelang pemilu Semptember lalu. Hal ini disebabkan karena pemerintah Jerman seakan tidak dapat menangani kasus Covid-19 yang telah mencapai 3,6 juta dengan angka kematian sebanyak 75.212 jiwa.
