Scolari Keeps Thoughts To Himself

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari kept his mouth tightly shut after his side failed to snatch the Barclays Premier League leadership from Liverpool last night.

Scolari refused to attend the post-match press conference, afraid, it seems, he could say something about referee Phil Dowd that would get him in trouble with the football authorities after the 0-0 draw with Everton and the red card for skipper John Terry.

But if Scolari slipped off into the Merseyside night in silence with his frustrated squad, there will be plenty who will want to dissect a performance that again saw the west Londoners short of their best.

It is the second weekend on the trot Chelsea have failed to take advantage of a Liverpool draw. After this display, the Anfield men will be number one at Christmas.

Scolari will now be without Terry for three matches - the Premier League games against West Brom and Fulham and the FA Cup tie with Southend.

It could have been worse, because for Chelsea, these are not the most difficult of fixtures.

But the real problem for Scolari was the overall display of his team, who lacked genuine conviction even before Terry's dismissal against an injury-ravaged Everton.

Scolari may have been furious with referee Dowd at the break after England captain Terry had been red-carded for a high tackle on Leon Osman.

But Everton boss David Moyes considered the tackle "reckless" and was not surprised to see Terry dismissed.

A Chelsea spokesman said: "None of the management team feel able to come up for a press conference.

"They had issues with a number of decisions and felt that they could well get themselves into trouble if they did speak."

Moyes revealed Osman has an ankle injury following Terry's challenge that could keep him out of the Boxing Day trip to Middlesbrough.

Moyes, who also saw a late Stevens Pienaar 'goal' ruled out by Dowd, said: "I felt the referee and linesman got that decision (the disallowed goal) right. Many managers may not say that.

"But I felt it was just offside and the ball could have just been in Petr Cech's hands as well, so from that point of view, the officials were right.

"My first reaction from the sidelines was that the tackle for the sending-off was reckless.

"It was going to be close. In my day I would have enjoyed a tackle like that, but they won't allow them now.

"The referee did well. Did he get the big decisions right? Yes, he did. The tackle for the red card was not good, and the disallowed goal was also the correct decision.

He added: "Our team played well. We do not have any forwards due to injury, and that showed a bit, but it was not for the lack of effort, and at times that is all you can ask.

"Osman has a very sore ankle from the challenge, which will make him a doubt for Boxing Day. And Joseph Yobo looks to have picked up a hamstring injury.

"I felt in the end we deserved more than a draw, we played well enough to take all three points.

"But Chelsea showed why they are such a good team, especially away from home, and they made it difficult for us to get through them."

He added: "They are always a threat when they have players like (Didier) Drogba and (Frank) Lampard around, so even with 10 men they were a threat. We had to make sure we concentrated.

"With them down to 10 men, you always feel you can get something from the game.

"They filled the middle of the park, that made it difficult. From our point of view we did not get to the line enough to really cause them trouble."

Régis Laconi

Régis Laconi is one of those rare riders to have won in both Grand Prix and World Superbike racing, and he remains competitive almost a decade into his top flight career. Although he can be relied upon to go particularly well at the Valência and Phillip Island circuits, he is no slouch elsewhere. With the best Superbike available to him this year, he is many people’s tip for a World title at last

1991
Débuted in the French 125cc championship

1992
French 125cc Champion; Yamaha TZR Cup Champion; World Championship 125cc début
Raced the number 75 Team-JMC Honda in the French GP, finishing 26th

1993
6th in French 250cc championship; 10th in European 250cc championship - both with team Vitesse

1994
French 250cc Champion; European 250cc Champion

1995 Equipe de France GP, number 55 Honda
Laconi graduated to a full-time 250cc GP ride in 1995, scoring four points from his three best finishes, and ending up 27th in the final table
Also finished 2nd in the French 250cc championship

1996 Tecmas Racing Team, number 55 Honda
Progress was made as he broke into the top ten four times, with best results of eighth in Germany and seventh in Britain. 43 points amounted to fifteenth overall

1997 Tecmas Honda Elf, number 55 Honda
For 1997, Régis moved in the 500cc ranks on a Honda twin. Due to a mid-season injury, after crashing in Austria, he only raced eleven times, but he scored in eight rounds and took fourteenth overall. 52 points scored included seventh in the Czech Republic and fifth in the season-closing Australian race

1998 Red Bull Yamaha WCM, number 55 Yamaha
Moving to Yamaha, 1998 was his best season to date, with a front row start in Germany, where he finished fifth, and another eight top ten results. 86 points gave him a career best tenth in the final GP rankings

1999 Red Bull Yamaha WCM, number 55 Yamaha
Better was to follow in 1999, although he ended the season a place lower in the points table - albeit just twelve behind the eighth-placed man. His best race was in Valência, where he started from pole and won the race in front of Suzuki’s Kenny Roberts. Regular finishes, including another podium in Australia, meant he scored 103 points
Also finished fourth in the Suzuka 8 Hours, with Noriyuki Haga; finished sixth in a Japanese Superbike race at Suzuka, with a Yamaha R7

2000 Red Bull Yamaha WCM, number 55 Yamaha
Laconi scored in every race of the 2000 season, but could not improve on fifth in Portugal and sixth in Valência. The same two races were won by team-mate Garry McCoy. Although he qualified third in Australia, and led the race, his overall performances amounted to only twelfth in the championship, with 106 points being 55 less than McCoy

2001 Aprilia Axo Team, number 55 Aprilia
Out of GP racing, Régis found a new home in World Superbikes. Immediately on the pace, he finished fourth in the first race, and was regularly within the top eight. His best performances came in the last round at Imola, where he led in the first race, until being taken out by Troy Bayliss, and was the victor in race two. A score of 152 put him eleventh overall

2002 MS Aprilia Racing, number 55 Aprilia
Laconi’s reward for 2001 was a move back to GPs with the new four-stroke Aprilia ‘Cube’, complete with F1 engine technology from Ford Cosworth. The racing season effectively doubled as a development programme, but despite this the Frenchman qualified as high as fifth in Italy, where he ran seventh in the race. However, the bike was a handful, and two eighth places were the best he could manage. 33 points put him joint nineteenth in the table

2003 Team Caracchi NCR Nortel Networks, number 55 Ducati
Replaced at Aprilia, Régis returned to WSB in 2003, piloting a customer Ducati 998 RS. In what would prove his best season of international racing to date, he qualified in the top six at all venues bar one, and was on pole at Sugo. With the works 999s way ahead, Laconi still managed three second places and two thirds. Overall, he finished in the top six on eighteen occasions, only missing third overall with tyre problems in the very last race. With two fastest laps, he scored 267 points in total

2004 Ducati Fila, number 55 Ducati
For this season, Régis moves to the Ducati works team, with the new 999 F04. Given his experience there is every chance that this could be a ticket to the WSB title, although he will have to beat young team-mate James Toseland to do it

Dani Pedrosa

Daniel “Dani” Pedrosa Ramal (born September 29, 1985 in Sabadell, Spain) is a Grand Prix motorcycle racer . Pedrosa grew up in a village near Sabadell called Castellar del Vallès. He is the youngest world champion in 125cc and 250cc Grands Prix. Pedrosa is 1.58m (5ft, 2in) tall and weighs 51kg (112.4lbs).

Early days
Dani Pedrosa started riding bikes at the early age of four, when he got his first motorcycle, an Italjet 50, which had side-wheels. His first racing bike was a minibike replica of Kawasaki, which he got at the age of six and which he used to race with his friends. Pedrosa experienced real racing at the age of 11, when he entered the Spanish Minibike Championship and ended his debut season in second place, scoring his first podium finish in the second race of the season. The next year, Pedrosa entered the same championship, but health problems prevented him from improving his results and he ended that season in 3rd position.

125cc
In 2001, Pedrosa made his World Championship debut in the 125cc class after being selected from the Movistar Activa Cup, a series designed to promote fresh racing talent in Spain, back in 1999. Under the guidance of Alberto Puig, Pedrosa scored two podium finishes in the first season and won his first race the following year, when he finished third in the championship. In 2003, he won five races and won the championship with two rounds remaining, scoring 223 points. In his first championship winning year, Pedrosa scored five victories and six podium finishes. A week after winning the championship, eighteen year old Pedrosa broke both of his ankles in a crash during practice at Phillip Island (Australia), ending his season.

250cc
After winning the 125cc Championship, Pedrosa moved up to the 250cc class in 2004 without a proper test on the new bike because his ankles were healing during the off-season. Going into the season unprepared, Pedrosa won the first race in South Africa and went on to clinch the 250cc World Championship title, including rookie of the year honours. In his first season in 250cc class, Pedrosa scored 7 victories and 13 podium finishes. Pedrosa decided to stay for one more season in 250cc class, and he won another title, once again with two races remaining in championship. In 2005, Pedrosa won 8 races and scored 14 podium finishes, despite a shoulder injury he sustained in practice session for Japanese Grand Prix.

MotoGP
Pedrosa made the move to 990cc MotoGP bikes in 2006, still riding for Honda. Critics said that Pedrosa’s tiny stature wasn’t strong enough to handle a big, heavy MotoGP bike and successfully race in the premier class. Proving them wrong, he finished second in the opening round at Jerez on March 26, 2006. At his fourth ever MotoGP appearance, on May 14, 2006, during the Chinese Grand Prix race weekend held in Shanghai, he won his first MotoGP race. This win made him the exact equal 2nd youngest winner (tied with the late Norick Abe) in the Premier Class behind Freddie Spencer. He won his second MotoGP race at Donington Park and became a strong candidate for the MotoGP Championship. It was a memorable victory for Dani, who shared the podium first time with Valentino Rossi in 2nd place. He also took 2 pole positions in the first half of the season.

Until the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, Pedrosa was 2nd in the Championship only behind his more experienced team-mate Nicky Hayden. However, he fell heavily during Free Practice and suffered a severe gash to the knee; which practically rendered him immobile. Pedrosa qualified 5th on the grid in that race due to the cancellation of the qualifying session proper due to heavy rainfall. He miraculously managed to finish 3rd in that race, only behind Rossi and Ducati rider Loris Capirossi. However, in the next races, his form dropped and he struggled with the bike; moving him down to 5th place in the MotoGP standings.

His poor performance continued at Estoril. After a promising start, he briefly ran 2nd before being passed by Colin Edwards and then championship leader and teammate Nicky Hayden. On lap 5, he and Hayden were involved in a crash. Pedrosa slid and crashed out of the race, taking out Hayden on the way. This crash ended his slim chances of winning the championship and also caused Hayden to lose his lead in the championship standings, as Rossi managed to finish 2nd.

However, two weeks later, Hayden recovered to win the championship while Pedrosa managed to finish in 3rd place. Pedrosa ran a strategic race, holding up the field and allowing Hayden to run away from the pack. This result clinched his 5th place in overall standings in his debut season, thus taking the title as Rookie of the Year in MotoGP category, beating fellow rookie and former rival in 250 cc Casey Stoner. At the final (post 2006 season) three day test of 2006 at Jerez Spain, Dani put his 800 cc RC212V at the top of the timesheets (on qualifying tyres) edging out Valentino Rossi by 0.214 seconds. Rossi had been fastest for the first two days of the test. Dani set a time of 1min 39.910 sec around the circuit.

Pedrosa has continued to race with Honda in 2007 and 2008, on their Honda RC212V, the new 800 cc bike for the new season.

Stoner Stuns on The Island

by Jacob Black

Australian Casey Stoner has overcome injury and the recent loss of his world championship title to win his second consecutive Phillip Island MotoGP.

The Ducati rider finished the race 6.5 seconds ahead of newly crowned world champion Valetino Rossi in an action packed race at Phillip Island.

Stoner said he was surprised to pull ahead of American Nicky Hayden after being hounded by the Honda rider during the early stages of the race. “I wasn’t sure I could stay ahead of Nicky at the beginning but then he seemed to drop off” the Australian said.

Hayden seemed secure in second until the final lap when Rossi passed the former world champion, making the podium of Hayden, Rossi and Stoner a collection of the last three MotoGP world champions.

Stoner says he is happy with second in the world championship for this year and pleased with a home win after some disappointing crashes mid way through the season ruined his championship defence.

Fellow Australians Anthony West and Chris Vermeulen finished 12th and 15th, Vermeulen lucky to gather points after a first lap incident involving Dani Pedrosa nearly ended his race.

Serena Williams pulls out of Hopman Cup

PERTH, Australia (AFP) - US Open winner Serena Williams has withdrawn from next month's Hopman Cup mixed teams event with a hamstring injury, organisers said here Monday.

The world number two injured her hamstring in the year-ending WTA Championships and has not been able to recover in time to prepare for the Perth tournament, although she still intends to play the Australian Open later in January, organisers said.

World No.10 James Blake will now be partnered by Meghann Shaughnessy, who last year played in the Hopman Cup and defeated Sania Mirza of India.

Shaughnessy, winner of six singles and 15 doubles titles on the WTA Tour, has had an injury-plagued year but the United States will remain the top seeds for the January 3-9 event.

Organisers said Russian star Marat Safin has shelved retirement plans and has committed to play in the Hopman Cup. Safin will team up with his sister and world number three Dinara Safina, with Russia the second seeds.

US is the most successful nation in the 20-year history of the Hopman Cup having won the event five times.

Pregnant Davenport withdraws from Aussie Open

Three-time Grand Slam winner Lindsay Davenport announced that she is pregnant and has taken herself off the WTA Tour indefinitely.

After agreeing to participate in the Australian Open last week, the 32-year-old former world No. 1 pulled out of the event on Wednesday.

"Of course this unexpected, but exciting, surprise now means I will be putting tennis on hold for the foreseeable future," Davenport said.

After returning to the tour after the birth of her first child, Jagger, Davenport won four of her 55 career singles titles.

Davenport has won three Grand Slam titles - US Open in 1998, Wimbledon in 1999 and the Australian Open in 2000.

She has 37 doubles titles to her credit, including triumphs at Roland Garros in 1996 (with Mary Joe Fernandez), the US Open in 1997 (with Jana Novotna) and Wimbledon in 1999 (with Corina Morariu).

Rossi set for Bayliss Superbike duel

MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi has agreed to a one-off Superbike race against Troy Bayliss, according to reports in Spain.

Solo Moto magazine claims the Italian will take on Bayliss in a head-to-head battle on March 14 in Qatar, saying the deal is "said and done".

The duel will take place during the weekend of the second round of the 2009 Superbike World Championship at the Losail circuit.

Rossi is expected to race a Yamaha R1 - as used by factory riders Tom Sykes and Ben Spies in 2009 - while Bayliss will be on the familiar Xerox Ducati.

Bayliss retired from the World Superbike scene after romping to his third championship in 2008 on the Ducati.

The Australian's dominance of an increasingly competitive series earned him the Rider of the Year award from the well-respected Italian magazine Moto Sprint ahead of Rossi, who won his sixth world championship in MotoGP's premier class, his eighth overall.

The 29-year-old Rossi is thought to be unhappy at the snub, and has agreed to the race in a bid to hammer home his supremacy.

Rossi recently said he was keen to take Bayliss on one-versus-one, telling Corriere dello Sport: "If there was an opportunity and the right date then I would race there tomorrow.

"I like World Superbikes to be mad, I like to watch it and I'd love to ride in it, the problem is the dates.

"I do not know when, but I hope that I can make a race in WSB. I am sad that I would not be able to race against Bayliss on track now because I would like to challenge him on a superbike. Maybe, if I ask him he might even come back for one race for the challenge."

There has been no official confirmation from either rider.

Ronaldo returns to training

Cristiano Ronaldo was able to return to training on Tuesday morning and could be involved in Manchester United's Champions League clash with Aalborg at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The Portugal international had to be substituted after picking up a hip injury in Saturday's victory against Sunderland and had been thought to be a major doubt for the final Group E clash against the Danish side.

However, Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra and Daniel Welbeck did not take part in the training session, increasing speculation that John O'Shea, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury, could return to the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, veteran defender Gary Neville has admitted that his continuing injury problems are starting to frustrate him.

The 33-year-old has struggled to regain full fitness since injuring ankle ligaments against Bolton Wanderers in March 2007.

He made only one substitute appearance in the whole of the 2007-08 campaign and, despite returning to the first team this season, has not made a Premier League start for over a month.

He told United's official website: "To be honest, I've not been able to stay fit enough, or produce consistently good enough performances, to stay in the team, simple as that.

"You've got to be realistic and honest with yourself. The first thing you've got to do is stay fit.

"If you do that over a long period of time, you get the opportunity to get your level of performance to something that's acceptable for this club."

FIA confirm S2000 future for WRC

The FIA today confirmed an S2000 based future for the WRC, which is thought to include a kit of a control turbocharger, rear wing and other small parts costing in the region of £25,000. The statement released today, from the December World Motorsport Council meeting, failed to give much explicit detail on the new formulae.

The statement from the FIA reads:
"As already announced, the 2010 World Rally Car will be S2000 based. However, the removable kit, already adopted by the WMSC, will be redefined with no electronic benefits, or similar upgrades, to ensure cost reductions. The new S2000-based World Rally Car will only be permitted for use on World Rally Championship events.

The FIA Production Car World Rally Championship will be retained for Group N cars, including the existing S2000 car."

Subaru withdraw from WRC

Subaru has announced its decision to withdraw from the 2009 World Rally Championship. This sudden decision was in response to the widespread economic downturn that is affecting the entire automotive industry, and follows Suzuki’s withdrawal announced yesterday.

After 20 years in the sport, during which time the Prodrive-run Subaru World Rally Team has won six World Rally Championship titles, this is not only sad news for Subaru and the team, but also for millions of rallying fans around the world. Thanks to its highly successful World Rally Championship programme, Subaru has developed into one of the world’s most widely recognised and evocative automotive brands.

Prodrive chairman, David Richards, said: “Subaru’s departure from the World Rally Championship is a great loss as it is one of the sport’s icons. The Subaru World Rally Team has created true champions such as Colin McRae and Richard Burns and its absence will be felt by many the world over. Although this decision closes a significant chapter in Prodrive’s history, our focus now turns to the future.”

For many, Prodrive and Subaru are synonymous, given the long-standing and close association between the two companies. However, while the Subaru World Rally Team historically represented a significant part of Prodrive’s business, today it accounts for no more than 20 per cent of the company’s turnover.

Prodrive will look to redeploy as many of the rally team as possible in other areas of its business operations, which have grown to span advanced engineering and manufacturing for the automotive, defence, marine and aerospace industries, in addition to other motorsport programmes.

Despite the current economic downturn, Prodrive’s automotive engineering business remains buoyant as it works with vehicle manufacturers to accelerate the development of next generation fuel-efficient vehicles and alternative fuel technologies.

Together with Subaru, Prodrive’s commitment to its customer rally teams will also continue unabated for 2009 and beyond. Over the past 15 years, Prodrive has sold close to 500 rally cars to more than 400 private competitors and independent rally teams in 47 countries. During this time, Prodrive’s customers have won five consecutive Production World Rally Championships and countless international rallies. In 2008, Prodrive-supported customer teams have claimed eight rally championship titles around the world.
Looking ahead, 2010 will see the introduction of new World Rally Championship technical regulations, which provide Prodrive with an opportunity to prepare for re-entering the championship with a new team and build on its 24 years of World Rally Championship experience and success.

Kyalami Test: Michel Fabrizio finishes on top

By Michael Guy
Xerox Ducati man Michel Fabrizio maintained his dominance of the three day Kyalami test by topping the time sheets for the third consecutive day.

The young Italian has been in sublime form throughout the three days and clearly found an affinity with the fast and undulating South African circuit along with the latest specification 2009 Ducati.

American Ben Spies showed once again that he is the real deal and left the test in second position and fully satisfied with his progress throughout the three days. In only the second test on the all new R1 the team are confident that there is still a lot more to come from the new bike and by the next test in January the complete package will be even stronger.

Noriyuki Haga rectified his three crashes on day one in the best possible way by upping his pace dramatically on the final day to post the third fastest time. The factory Ducati team now leave the circuit with a list of changes they need to make to the bike which they believe will provide a massive boost to Haga in time for the opening round of the championship in Phillip Island.

Britain Jonathan Rea had a sensational first test onboard the Ten Kate Honda Superbike and ended the final day in fourth place having held second spot for the majority of the day.

Behind Rea was Ten Kate team-mate Carlos Checa who upped his pace significantly on day three to move into the top five.

Max Neukirchner and Yukio Kagayama didn’t improve as much as expected on qualifying rubber but finished the test an impressive sixth and seventh onboard the 2009 specification GSXR-1000.

Aprilia men Max Biaggi and Shinya Nakano overcame a number of technical problems on the final day, which left them with only one bike each to post times just over a second off the pace in only their second ride on the bike.

Ryuichi Kiyonari completed the most laps of anyone including a 23 lap race run in the final hour of the test, but was unable to post that one single fast lap time, which meant he finished the test in a disappointing tenth spot.

Troy Corser was satisfied with his and BMW’s performance throughout the three days. Despite a crash today, the Australian finished just 1.4 seconds off pole and was as fast on race rubber as he was when he used a qualifying tyre.

Tom Sykes improved his time again today, but also suffered a big crash that left him limping. The Yamaha Italia rider is still feeling the effects of the sickness and flu bug, but remains fully confident in his bike and team.

Ruben Xaus rounded off the field with a lap time of 1m 41.996 set on race rubber.

11. Troy Corser (BMW) 1m 41.102
12. Tom Sykes (Yamaha) 1m 41.562
13. Ruben Xaus (BMW) 1m 41.996

Kenan Sofuoglu proved he could be unstoppable next year with an incredible 1m 42.872 lap time on the final day. The young Turk is clearly delighted to be back on a Supersport bike and his lap time is a warning shot to the rest of the WSS paddock especially considering that he was over a second faster than newly crowned WSS champions and team-mate Andrew Pitt.

Ducati boss confident in Mika Kallio

By Mattehw Birt
Factory Ducati boss Livio Suppo believes Finnish rider Mika Kallio could be one of the surprise packages of the 2009 MotoGP world championship.

The Pramac Racing rookie was in dazzling form at the recent Jerez test session in Spain, springing a major surprise when he clocked the seventh fastest overall time.

That saw the KTM rider beat a host of established MotoGP stars including Colin Edwards and James Toseland, and he was only 0.1s adrift of 2008 Rookie of the Year Jorge Lorenzo.

His early performances have already convinced Ducati’s hierarchy that he could have a big impact in 2009 when he partners fellow MotoGP novice Niccolo Canepa in Ducati’s satellite squad.

Suppo added: “He is a guy who has a very good approach. He is not trying to go fast just to be fast. He is trying to learn and understand the bike and the engineers and when he feels good the time arrives.

"The performance he showed in the 250 class was impressive. People seem to forget in 2007 he was a rookie in 250 and at times he was able to beat Jorge and Andrea (Dovizioso) who have shown in 2008 they are very strong in MotoGP. I think Mika can do a very good job for us.

James Toseland eager to test 2009 Yamaha

By Matthew Birt
British rider James Toseland is confident that reigning world champion Valentino Rossi will make Yamaha’s factory YZR-M1 an even more formidable package in 2009.

Rossi has been conducting in-depth evaluation of Yamaha’s 2009 prototype in tests at Valencia and Jerez last month, with the complete new bike poised for its track debut on February 5 when testing resumes in Sepang, Malaysia.

After a humiliating defeat at the hands of Ducati and impressive Australian Casey Stoner in 2007, Yamaha responded with 10 victories last season - nine going to Rossi on his way to reclaiming the world title for the first time since 2005.

The YZR-M1 was not only more reliable but it was considerably faster in a straight line, with outright horsepower being a major weakness in 2007.

And now Toseland is eager to benefit from Rossi’s considerable skills when his Tech 3 Yamaha squad receives the ’09 YZR-M1 in Sepang.

The double World Superbike champion told MCN: “One thing that was on the top of my list when I was thinking about signing for Yamaha was having Valentino develop the bike. And having that team that is around him to work on the bike is massive.
To make the changes they did as well as winning the title is quite remarkable and what they do can only help us in our garage. I can’t wait to get on the new bike in Malaysia because I have heard nothing but good things about it from Yamaha and some of the guys in the team.”

Chris Atkinson released from hospital

After crashing heavily when their No. 6 Impreza slid off the road on ice at the start of stage seven, the first running of Walters Arena, Chris Atkinson was airlifted to hospital for observation.

At 2120hrs this evening it was confirmed by the hospital's medical staff and the SWRT medical crew that Chris Atkinson had been discharged from the hospital and was returning to the team's hotel.

Co-driver Stéphane Prévot was also visited by the event's medical crew on the scene but they deemed no further observation was necessary.

Both drivers are ok.

“It is deeply unfortunate that Chris and Stéphane suffered such a bad accident today” said David Richards, Subaru World Rally Team Principal. “We are in close contact with the hospital and they have recently confirmed to us that Chris will be released tonight. That they are both ok is testament to the strength and integrity of our new car and all the work that the team has put into improving the safety features.”

Solberg third at Bettega Memorial

Subaru World Rally Team star Petter Solberg finished a close third in the Bettega Memorial Rallysprint at the Bologna Motorshow on 13-14 December.

Aboard a factory-entered Subaru Impreza WRC2008, the Norwegian finished third after a series of knock-out rounds on both Saturday and Sunday in a mixed-surface arena resembling a WRC spectator stage.

The initial plan was for Chris Atkinson to take the reigns at Bologna, but the Australian was sidelined after his heavy crash on the opening day of Rally GB when he and co-driver Stéphane Prévot slid off the road on sheet ice. Whilst both Atkinson and Prévot are recovering well having suffered no serious injuries from the impact, Chris was given independent medical advice to miss the Bettega Memorial to ensure that he is fully rested in time for the pre-event Rally Ireland test in the new year.

The Bettega Memorial is one of the most popular motorsport events to take place at the Bologna Motor Show and honours the memory of the late Attilio Bettega, a star of the world rally scene in the 1970s and early 1980s. This year was its 24th running.

Subaru has a good heritage at this prestigious event. Last year SWRT test driver Markko Märtin claimed victory aboard an Impreza WRC2007. In 2005 MotoGP star Valentino Rossi thrilled his home crowd when he drove an Impreza WRC2005, and in 2004 Colin McRae was reunited with the model that took him to the 1995 World Rally Championship.

Top six overall positions:
1, Dani Sordo, Citroen C4 WRC
2, Gigi Galli, Ford Focus
3, Petter Solberg, Subaru Impreza
4, Kris Meeke, Citroen Xsara
Eliminated, Francois Duval, Subaru Impreza
Eliminated, Marcus Gronholm, Ford Focus

Guide to Buying a Webcam

By Andrew Gates

How web broadcasting works

Webcams are those handy little cameras that attach to your PC and send images to a web page that can be viewed by others. This enables you to share daily life events with friends and family in other parts of the country or the world, or to arrange a video-conference with colleagues and maintain long distance relationships of all kinds. Of course the number of ways to use this technology is limited only by your imagination.

Web Cameras

But before you buy a webcam, it pays to understand a little about how the technology of broadcasting images over the Internet works. Of course, if you\'re a full bottle on this already, you can skip this section and go straight to browsing the options on Myshopping.com.au where you can compare products and suppliers, their specifications and prices.

Webcams provide \'real time\' images of people; places and events that can be viewed \'live\' on a web page. The broadcasting end has a camera that captures the images, feeds them into a computer to an ISP and out to viewing pages across the Internet. There are two different types of broadcast: streaming images, where the images are a constant stream downloaded in video format; or Java, where the images are captured at fixed time intervals and refreshed on the web pages at a rate fixed by the broadcaster.

The Applications - What are you intending to broadcast, and to whom?

There is a wide range of uses of webcam technology. Some examples include personal \'Big Brother\' style diaries, sharing of family events, workplace security, video conferencing, virtual tourism, road traffic management, weather watching, event broadcast and a host of others.

Before you make a choice about any webcam equipment, it helps to decide exactly how you want to use the technology, in other words, what you are intending to broadcast. This decision will impact upon the type of camera you use, and how you use it.

A second consideration is, who will be viewing your content? What level of quality is expected? This will help determine the type of camera you use, the software involved and your Internet connection. Of course, your Internet connection may be a limitation on how much you can do.

The requirements for video conferencing are different from the requirements of workplace security, which are different again from the requirements of sharing a family event.

The physical components

There are a number of physical components required to make web cam technology work. At the top of the list is the camera itself. Then, depending on the type of camera you use and the way in which you want to deliver the content to the Internet, you may need to incorporate video capture hardware in your computer. Some software is required to help you process the data, and Internet connection is required and a web page into which the data is fed.

CAMERA CHOICES

Your choice of camera depends somewhat on what you are intending to show. If you need to reach a large public audience yo may want good quality camcorder or megapixel camera that captures high quality images. If it\'s just for seeing who\'s at your front door or keeping an eye on the kids in their playroom, then it may not need to present high quality images. If you are intending to use it outdoors, it will need to be weather proof and you may need to consider sun and UV protection. Available power supply and any robotic requirements for camera movement and focus are extra considerations.

Dedicated webcams

The most basic webcams connect to a PC using a simple USB connection. A wide range of cameras with accompanying software at a range of prices is available for this type of application. Simply search though Myshopping.com.au to compare prices and specifications. Dedicated webcams are simple to install and easy to use, but come with limitations that affect the quality of the images, such as low number of frames per second (refresh rates) and resolution (pixels per inch).

Camcorders and security cameras

Higher quality images and more camera control come from using camcorder and security cameras. To use these devices you will need to add a video capture card to your PC. Once you have that installed however, you can use a wide range of cameras from broadcast cameras to miniature spy cameras. You can include variable lens options, filters for daylight and low light situations, as well as robotic controls for panning and focus adjustments. You can search through Myshopping.com.au for camcorder selections.

Integrated cameras

An integrated camera combines the camera and the optical hardware with a video server, and as such requires no additional software. They can be used in network situations or as stand-alone devices for monitoring progress on a construction project for example.

Megapixel cameras

Network megapixel cameras combine network capability with high quality digital camera technology. These cameras offer excellent quality but this creates large files sizes, therefore they have limited application in constant streaming video. However for interval refreshed archive image collection, they are ideal, providing a constant record and high quality. You can search through Myshopping.com.au for digital camera selections.

SOFTWARE

If you are not using an integrated camera solution, you will need to install an encoding program like Webcaster or MediaCaster to transfer your images to a web page.

At the receiver end, when web surfers browse the internet and wish to view live video on the web for the first time, they will need to download dedicated applications that show the content such as an ActiveX control, Windows Media player, Flash player or the like.

INTERNET CONNECTION

Finally, you need an Internet connection. The hardware you will need may include a modem for dial-up connection, or modem/router for a broadband solution. Naturally the higher the quality you want, or the faster refresh rate you want, the more bandwidth you will need. ADSL (Broadband) is going to offer you the best solution, but keep in mind what your Internet connection when you are making choices of cameras and feeder software.

Webcam applications work well with wireless solutions. Make sure when you are purchasing a camera or network video solution that it is compatible with any wireless system you may be using in a LAN.

Key considerations

The specifications that are variable with webcam applications, and are affected by camera type, web interface and Internet connection, include the number of frames per second and the image resolution.

Frames-per-second is the number of times a still image flashes by in a second to give the appearance of moving pictures. In Australia, the standard television PAL format is at 25 frames per second. A webcam with up to 30 frames per second will show normal video images. But the more frames per second you demand, the more bandwidth, memory and processing power is required.

Resolution is measured the number of pixels per inch. High quality photographs require a high resolution. But the standard for web images is a low 72 dpi. Higher resolution images will not be of any better visual quality, just slower to upload and download.

Use Myshopping.com.au to compare different webcams, camcorders and digital cameras. You can compare the prices and specifications of the different products and brands, and a wide range of reputable vendors.

Rio Ferdinand writes off Arsenal title hopes

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has written off Arsenal's title hopes, believing it will become a three-way battle between the defending champions, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Arsenal are eight points behind leaders Liverpool, seven adrift of Chelsea and two off United.

"I presume us, Chelsea and Liverpool will start pulling away a bit after Christmas," Ferdinand told BBC radio from Tokyo where United are competing in the Club World Cup of continental champions.

"It's not beyond them (Arsenal), it's just my personal opinion that it will be between us three this season."

Arsene Wenger's side are languishing in fifth place after surrendering the lead in a tame 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on Saturday.

At the same time, Aston Villa's 4-2 win over Bolton Wanderers took Martin O'Neill's side into fourth.

United, who drew 0-0 with Spurs last Saturday, will miss next weekend's round of Premier League matches, but Ferdinand said everyone would be keeping a close eye on what was happening.

"We'll be looking and seeing what's going on," he said.

"Last weekend we were disappointed, especially after our game, but when you look back on it you can take it that we came out of it better than anyone else because we drew away and the other teams drew at home.

"We can take some comfort from that but it would have been nice to have got the three points. We would have been sitting a lot prettier than we are now.

"It looks like teams will drop points. Hull going to Anfield and getting a draw is a massive result for them. Who would have said that before the season kicked off?

"West Ham getting a draw at Chelsea was a surprise as well. There have been quite a few unusual results this season but I am sure it is good for the fans."

Silva excited by Milan challenge

Thiago Silva arrived in Milan on Sunday where he is set to sign a contract to become AC's first acquisition for the 2009-10 campaign. The Fluminense central defender is expected to put pen to paper on a deal at the San Siro on Monday after undergoing a medical.

However, the Brazil international will not be able to play for Carlo Ancelotti's outfit until next season with Milan having all of their non-European places covered.

Silva is the latest Brazilian to join Milan, whose contingent already includes Alexandre Pato, Kaka, Dida, Emerson and Ronaldinho and he believes he will have no problem fitting in.

"I said yes to Milan because they are among the best clubs in the world and I will do everything to remain there for a long time," said Silva.

"Pato and Kaka are my friends and I am delighted to be able to play with them.

"I know Italian football, the tournament is difficult and hard but I think I will adapt quickly."

The 24-year-old will have a huge responsibility on his shoulders as he is set to replace veteran defender Paolo Maldini, who will retire at the end of the season.

"Maldini is very important for Milan," added Silva. "It will be difficult to replace him but I'll do the best I can in order to do as he has done in the history of this club.

Gattuso sustains serious injury

Milan midfield star Gennaro Gattuso could be out for six months after suffering a serious knee injury against Catania.

The pugnacious Azzurri ace seemed fine during the San Siro victory and played the full 90 minutes.

But the Rossoneri's official website has revealed that Gattuso was sent for tests after reporting severe pain after the game.

Provisional indications are that Ringhio has torn his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee - a very serious problem that requires a lengthy recovery period.

The 30-year-old will undergo tests tomorrow in Antwerp with Dr Marc Martens and club medic Jean Pierre Meersseman.

AC Milan fear Kaka absence

Kaka is in doubt for Milan's all-important Serie A battle against Juventus this weekend.

The Brasilia-born star, who is amongst the five nominees for the FIFA World Player of the Year, was absent from the final game at training this afternoon and spent most of the time working on his own in the gym.

The news is a stinging blow to Coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has already lost inspirational midfielder Gennaro Gattuso to a knee ligament problem.

Reports suggest that Carletto has been experimenting with an attacking trident of Clarence Seedorf, Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato, preparing for Kaka's absence.

The club are expected to make a final decision on whether to risk Kaka later this evening and Milan fans will be waiting anxiously.]

Premier League - Ronaldo sees future at United

The Manchester United winger was named as Kaka's successor and presented with the trophy in a televised ceremony on Sunday.

Ronaldo, who was the subject of much speculation this summer over a possible move to Real Madrid, was delighted to finally get his hands on the Ballon d'Or and has vowed to fire his club to more success this season.

"I feel at home there," he told France Football. "I arrived there when I was very young and I have won individual and team trophies there.

"Today I have this individual award that makes me very happy, it's the fulfilment of work that I have been doing for a long time.

"But I am ambitious. I have to keep on lifting individual and team trophies."

At the ceremony itself Ronaldo had scotched rumours he was still thinking about a move to Madrid, insisting his mind is only focused on helping his team emulate last season's achievements.

"I hope everything will be good again this year," he said on TF1. "And that we'll win the the Champions League again and the Premier League also, which is the club's priority.

"It's not the time to talk about other clubs at the moment. I'm happy here and I'm going to stay."

Of the 96 leading journalists polled by France Football magazine, 77 voted Ronaldo as their number one player this year and every one placed him in their top five after he scored 42 goals in United's Barclays Premier League and Champions League-winning season.

Ronaldo polled a massive 446 points from a maximum of 480, finishing comfortably ahead of second-placed Lionel Messi (281) and third-placed Fernando Torres(179).

The 23-year-old was visibly moved at the ceremony and even had a tear in his eye as he listened to people pay tribute to his stunning year.

Samuel Etp'o, Luis Figo and Luiz Felipe Scolari were just a few of the host of footballing luminaries who spoke on the video montage, while members of his family and friends also had messages for him,

"Congratulations because you deserved this Ballon' d'Or," said team-mate Patrice Evra before jokingly adding: "We helped you too, you have to think about us, You need to thank us too."

Kaka added the FIFA World Player of the Year award to his Ballon d'Or last year, something which Ronaldo is widely expected to achieve too when that prize is announced next month.

And the Milan star believes he is a worthy successor.

"I like the speed with which he runs with the ball," he said. "He's a fundamental player. I like him a lot."

Ecclestone: “F1 will survive financial crisis”

In an interview with BBC, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his disappointment for Honda's dexision to withdraw from Formula One but believes firmly that the sport will survive the current global financial crisis. “Everybody has been working like crazy to reduce the necessity to spend to be competitive. Even yesterday there was a meeting of the technical people to change the regulations in order for this to take place, and I have no doubt that there would have been a drastic reduction in the cost and the necessity to spend to be competitive, which is what we’re tying to do,” said Ecclestone.

“It’s also a big big shame for Honda because I’ve no doubt that team would’ve been running in the top four next year without any problems. They’ve spent a lot of money to put themselves in that position, so if anyone does want to be in Formula One, this is the team they should certainly look to buy,” he continued.

“I think Formula One is in no bigger crisis than any other company throughout the world. The world is in crisis at the moment but it won’t stop - the world won’t stop, that’s for sure,” he added.

Kawasaki complete Phillip Island test

By Pablo Elizalde
The Kawasaki team on Friday completed their three-day test at the Phillip Island circuit, where the Japanese squad were again welcomed by poor weather.

The circuit was again hit by rain at night and so it was damp in the morning, with track temperatures lower than expected, something that caught test rider Olivier Jacque out.

The Frenchman suffered a big crash late in the afternoon, although luckily he escaped injury.

Despite the accident, Jacque was happy with the work done during the test.

"These three days at Phillip Island have been positive, because we now know how much work we need to do to improve the bike before we return here to continue testing in the New Year," he said.

"We tried a slightly different engine today, which had some positive points, but we're still struggling a little bit with the front-end feeling.

"I had a big crash late on in the day after the rear came round on me through the right-hander at Hayshed. It takes some time to warm up the right-hand side of the tyre here, and although I'd been really careful up to this point, I must have just given it a bit too much gas on cold tarmac and down I went.

"It was a big impact, but apart from a few bruises, I walked away uninjured. It was scary though!"

Teammates John Hopkins and Marco Melandri had a more positive day, the Italian covering 79 laps as he continued acclimatising to the team.

Hopkins, meanwhile, managed to complete long runs despite having to adapt his riding style to compensate for the injuries he is suffering.

The Anglo-American rider will fly to the United States, where he'll undergo surgery on Wednesday to remove the metal plates from his left foot, ankle and hand.

"Today was more positive for me," he said. "The injuries weren't such a big problem, although I had to adapt my riding style because I still can't put any pressure on the left footpeg.

"We found a pretty good set-up on the bike and my lap times were pretty consistent over the long runs we did for Bridgestone, and it's this consistency that's important to our development programme right now. It's been good working with Marco; we work well together and I'm sure we'll be pushing each other all the way once we start testing and racing again next year.

"Now I'm off straight back to America, where I'll have surgery on Wednesday to remove all the metal from my various injuries. As well as taking the plates out of my left foot and ankle, Doctor Ting will also remove the plate I've had in my left hand for the past three years. I'll be about two kilograms lighter!

"My plan is to take it easy after the surgery, to make sure I'm fully recovered, and then train my butt off ready for the new season."

Hopkins 'hardware free' after surgery

John Hopkins underwent successful surgery at the Fremont Surgery Centre in California on Thursday.

The 25-year-old Anglo-American underwent a surgical procedure to remove the metal plates from his left ankle and left foot, inserted following his high-speed crash during practice for this year's Dutch TT at Assen in June.

Surgeons, led by the world renowned Doctor Arthur Ting, also performed keyhole surgery to clean up scar tissue and cartilage damage in Hopkins' left knee, which he injured in the same Assen crash.

Doctor Ting also took the opportunity to remove a metal plate from the Kawasaki pilot's left hand, the result of a previous injury, to leave Hopkins 'hardware free' for the first time in three years.

"It's unbelievable; it's great to be hardware free again after all this time," said John. "I have had several injuries in the past and have had to go through a few surgical ordeals since I was 13-years-of-age, but you never really get used to it.

"Now all the metal is out of my body I'm looking forward to some rest and recuperation, and spending time with my wife Ashleigh and our two families during the Christmas holiday period."

Hopkins remained in the Fremont Surgery Centre overnight following the operation, but will return home to San Diego following a 24-hour post surgical evaluation today, Friday 5th December.

Hopper will now require four weeks of rest and recuperation, with only mild rehabilitation exercise, before resuming his full training and conditioning programme ahead of the 2009 MotoGP season.

"Doctor Ting reckons it will be four weeks before I can start training properly again, but that should give me time to be fighting fit, ready for the start of pre-season testing at the end of January," confirmed Hopkins.

"John has been either injured, or handicapped by his injuries, for almost the entire season, so the removal of all the metal from his body is an important step in the recovery process for him," stated Kawasaki competition manager Michael Bartholemy.

"John will need approximately four weeks to recover fully from the surgery, but he will then be able to resume his pre-season training programme at full intensity, which should see him fully fit again prior to the first test of the new season at the end of January.

"It's been hard watching John ride injured this year, so I'm looking forward to seeing him back on the bike fully fit once again. Having John back at 100 percent is important to us now, as we will have the all-new Ninja ZX-RR at the first test of 2009, and we need both our riders on top form if we are to have the bike ready for the first race in April."

Hopkins will ride alongside Marco Melandri at Kawasaki next season.

Rossi begins Rally GB with number 46

Valentino Rossi may be in the confines of a Ford Focus car at this weekend´s WRC Rally GB event, but the 2008 MotoGP World Champion will be recognisable to motorcycle fans due to his customary number 46´s adorning the four wheeled machine.

Rossi began his latest guest rally appearance in a shakedown test on Thursday, placing 17th out of 21 riders in the Penllergaer Forest stage. The Italian today (Friday) begins the Rally GB proper, with the first stage taking place at Hafren. A further seven stages will follow, racking up a total of around 124 kilometres.

Rossi is using the number 46, which he has run throughout his racing career, after a charitable donation from Finnish driver Jari Ketomaa (the regular owner of the number in the WRC season). Ketomaa will instead use 146 this weekend.

`It was very important for me to get number 46 - Jari was very fair to give me the number,´ said Rossi on the Finn´s generosity. `I was car 46 on the two rallies I have done previously and I´ve never ridden a motorbike or driven a car in an official race without it.´

The Fiat Yamaha rider tested the Stobart-backed car before the recent Jerez test, although he does not feel totally prepared for the event in Wales. `We have only done one day of testing in the UK, about three weeks ago, and that´s not a lot, so our testing will continue in the race. We need to make a few kilometres to understand the car, and then we´ll see,´ he analyses.

`My goal is to have fun and finish. At the end of New Zealand (his previous rally runout, in 2006) in some stages I was about two seconds per kilometre off (WRC star) Marcus Gronholm´s pace. My target is to try and get as close to the leaders again here.´

Rossi recently finished runner-up in the annual Monza Rally event in his native Italy.

Italian World Champions´ achievements recognised in homeland

The 2008 World Championship action may be over, but the riders have not been too far away from each other in recent weeks. Aside from meetings on the testing tracks, the multitude of prize-giving ceremonies rewarding the competitors for their efforts over the past year have brought them back into contact during the winter break.

Italy´s most successful riders of the season were on-hand to collect end-of-year honours at this week´s Bologna Motorshow, and naturally the star of the event was MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi. He was presented with a `Golden Helmet´ to add to his accolades for regaining the title.

Also receiving that particular award were 250cc World Champion Marco Simoncelli, MotoGP´s Italian rookie sensation Andrea Dovizioso, 125cc runner-up Simone Corsi and 250cc racewinner Mattia Pasini, all in attendance at the motorshow.

Rossi and Simoncelli will have to make further space in their trophy cabinets before the end of the year. In one week´s time the Italian World Champions will be awarded the Diploma of Honour (Rossi) and Chain of Honour (Simoncelli), typically given to the best Sportsmen of the calendar year. The pair will receive their honours from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Wednesday, December 17th.
