Malaysia to lead Southeast Asia's medal hunt

Malaysia will spearhead Southeast Asia's hunt for gold at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, with the region's hopes resting mainly on badminton, squash, table tennis and possibly lawn bowling.

Malaysia won a record 10 gold medals when it hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998, the first ever to be held in Asia. With 203 athletes headed to India - its largest contingent ever - Malaysia is confident it can reach at least the 1998 level.

"I hope to see our national anthem played at least 10 times," Malaysian Sports Minister Shabery Cheek said. "I hope our athletes will not doubt their own abilities but will press on."

Malaysia's best medal hopes are Lee Chong Wei, the top-ranked men's badminton player, and Nicol David, who won her fifth World Open title earlier this month in Egypt to celebrate 50 straight months as the world's top female squash player.

Lee, nursing a back injury he picked up during the world championships in Paris last month, proved his form by winning the recent Japan Open title, defeating Lin Dan of China 22-20, 16-21, 21-17.

"Chong Wei's immediate task is to ensure Malaysia secures the men's singles gold and help earn the team gold," National Sports Council director general Zolkples Embong said.

David is favored to win her first Commonwealth Games singles gold, the only major honor that has eluded her. She has a bye into the second round and her main rival is expected to be Jenny Duncalf of England.

David could end up with two medals as she resumes her partnership with Ong Beng Hee in mixed doubles. The third-seeded pair won silver in the event at the 2002 Manchester Games.

Malaysia is not expected to create any ripples in the pool, but its best medal prospect comes from synchronized divers Leong Mun Yee and Pandelela Rinung, who won bronze in the 10-meter platform at the world championships. However, Pandelela's double silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore last month left the 17-year-old with a neck injury.

The Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation has set a four-gold target in New Delhi, double its two-gold haul at the 2006 Melbourne Games. The medals were provided by Siti Zalina Ahmad in the women's singles and women's triples team.

The 31-year-old Siti Zalina, who will carry Malaysia's flag at Sunday's opening ceremony, is trying to become the first Malaysian to win a hat trick of gold medals in the games.

Also, top-ranked Safuan Said is a strong bet for the men's singles gold.

Singapore is not only sending its largest-ever contingent - 68 athletes and 34 officials - but also the youngest ever with 55 debutants and 29 athletes who are 21 and younger. They will compete in eight out of the 17 events.

Singapore's hopes rest on its table tennis team, which won four of the five golds at the last games in Melbourne. Making his debut at the games is Singapore Sports School student Pang Xue Jie, who is the youngest on his team at 18.

"I expect to see performances which demonstrate fighting spirit and are targeted at achieving personal bests," Singapore chef de mission Annabel Pennefather said. "If all our athletes approach their respective competitions with this mindset, for some their very best would translate to personal bests and-or new national records. For others it would mean medals."

Singapore is also taking part in synchronized swimming for the first time, represented by Gayle Esther Lee, a student at Stanford University in California.

"I love both swimming and artistic gymnastics, so I took up synchronized swimming as it's a combination of these two sports," she said.

Brunei, the tiny oil-rich sultanate on Borneo island, is sending 11 athletes, all of whom will compete in lawn bowling.

"I feel that we could get some surprise wins against the top teams like England, Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia," Brunei lawn bowling coach Eric Johannes said.
Brunei has never won a medal of any color since it began participating at the Commonwealth Games in 1990.

Mourinho, Van Gaal chase more European glory

Jose Mourinho is looking to bring long-awaited European glory back to Inter Milan on Saturday, and Louis van Gaal is aiming to guide Bayern Munich to a fifth title in Europe's most prestigious club competition.

The coaches in the Champions League final have won 28 major titles combined, and this year Mourinho will put his reputation as one of the game's best coaches on the line against an experienced manager who has won league titles in four different countries.

Mourinho, who led Chelsea to its first English league title in 50 years, is out to lead one of European football's biggest clubs to its first European Cup triumph since 1965. He will do so amid strong speculation that he will then walk out on the Italian club and move to Real Madrid.

Mourinho has won six league titles in Portugal, England and Italy among his 13 major successes, and the 47-year-old self-proclaimed "Special One" is one of the most sought after coaches in the game.

"In Porto we won UEFA Cup, (league) championship and Portuguese Cup. The next year we won (European) Super Cup, championship and Champions League, so we did all three," Murinho said during the buildup to Saturday's final.

But despite two Premier League titles in a row, the Portuguese coach failed to achieve Champions League success with Chelsea and left the club, unhappy that Russian owner Roman Abramovich was making transfer decisions without his approval.

He eventually took over an Inter side which had dominated Serie A but failed in Europe. The owners wanted someone to end that long wait for another European Cup.

"This would be an incredible achievement because the level of the competition is so high and our road to the final was an incredible road," said Mourinho, whose team had to play defending champion Barcelona both in the group stage and the semifinals.

Inter also beat Chelsea home and away, and his former club went on to win both the Premier League and FA Cup.

"It was an incredibly difficult way to get to the final," Mourinho said.

Bayern also had a tough route to the final but capitalized on a little good fortune along the way.

On the brink of going out, Bayern came from behind to knock out Juventus in the group phase after a 4-1 win away from home. A disputed goal from Miroslav Klose gave Bayern a 2-1 first leg lead over Fiorentina, and the Gern side advanced on away goals in the first knockout round.

Bayern again appeared to be on the way out when it trailed Manchester United 3-0 in the second leg at Old Trafford. But the German club scored two to again go through on away goals.

Bayern went on to beat Lyon and reach its eighth final, then stretched its Bundesliga record number of titles to 22 and outplayed Werder Bremen 4-0 in the German Cup final. Back in November, however, Bayern was in eighth place in the Bundesliga, on the brink of being knocked out of the Champions League. Van Gaal sensed then that his time was short.

"If I don't produce, I will be fired," the 58-year-old Bayern coach said at the time.

The Dutchman won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995, so both he and Mourinho are out to join Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970 and Hamburg 1983) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997 and Bayern 2001) as winners with two different clubs.

Bayern's players have called on all fans of Bundesliga clubs to get behind the team on Saturday because a triumph would earn the nation four spots in next season's competition and Serie A would lose one.

Both teams are missing key players. Inter is without Brazil defensive midfielder Thiago Motta and Bayern won't have France winger Franck Ribery. Both were sent off in the semifinals.

Inter has won repeated Italian titles with barely any Italians on its starting lineup and a side packed with talented and hugely experienced players from Brazil and Argentina, and a creative Dutch midfielder in Wesley Sneijder.

Van Gaal's team has a strong Dutch influence, too, with Arjen Robben and Marc van Bommel playing alongside Germany internationals Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm.

English referee Howard Webb will take charge of his first Champions League final. Although a familiar face in the competition for the past few years, he has missed out on the final because Premier League clubs have made it to the previous five, making him ineligible.

Bali supports national youth sports event

Denpasar, Bali - The Bali provincial administration will support if the national youth sports (PON) event is preceded by an exhibition in 2011 as a preparation of the second youth sports Olympiad in Nanjing, China in 2014.

The young athletes would definitely be more excited about doing exercises because there is a target, I Gusti Agung Susila said on Wednesday to respond the discourse of PON in 2013.

The children with a capability in their field, will be asked to obtain further guidance from professional coaches, he said.

If it is true, the ministry of youth and sports and the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) to establish the PON in 2011 as a positive effort to develop sports in our country.

Williams ends Schiavone`s hopes in New York

New York - Former champion Venus Williams ended the run of French Open champion Francesca Schiavone at the U.S. Open when she beat the flamboyant Italian 7-6 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old American, seeded third and champion at Flushing Meadows in 2000 and 2001, had a little too much power for the seventh seed, battling through in one hour 54 minutes to reach the last four for the eighth time.

"She played a great match," Williams said in a courtside interview. "It`s not easy to play in these conditions, it`s hard to know what decisions to make, but she played excellent."

Schiavone, who became the first Italian woman to win a grand-slam singles title when she won the French Open in June, recovered from 4-2 down to force a tiebreak in the first set.

Breezy conditions made life difficult for both players and Schiavone came from 4-0 down in the tiebreak to make it 4-4 before Williams, wearing a sparkling pink dress, closed it out 7-5.

The American then stormed to a 4-1 lead in the second set only for the resilient Schiavone to break back and get on serve again at 4-3.

The Italian enjoyed plenty of success by feeding short slices to Williams, who made 33 unforced errors.

Williams broke again to lead 5-3 but once more, the Italian broke back, only for Williams to break yet again to clinch victory.

In the semi-finals, the American faces either defending champion Kim Clijsters or Australian fifth seed Sam Stosur. (Uu.A008/A016/P003)

President calls for national football`s reawakening

Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono called on all parties responsible for national football development to immediately take action to revive the favorite sport and not to let people wait too long to see achievement.

In his speech to mark the 26th anniversary of the National Sports Day at the Indoor Tennis Stadium in Senayan here on Tuesday he said the national football congress was held in March 2010 and people were now awaiting its concrete results.

"We have to be able to revive football in our country. We have carried out the National Football Congress in Malang. So what are we waiting for," he said.

The congress has issued seven recommendations including for the National Football Association (PSSI) to immediately conduct reform and restructuring and increase communications, coordination and synchronization with all its stakeholders particularly the National Sports Committee (KONI).

"Do not let the people wait too long as it could make them become disappointed with the national football development in our country," he said.

On the occasion Presiden Yudhoyono expressed appreciation to the military (TNI) and the police that have a special program to promote football within their forces.

He pledged he would attend the opening of the football game among the three TNI forces as well as the police force on September 23.

He said he would also attend the final round of the game. "Tomorrow I will come to see the opening match of the competition between the army, the airforce, the navy and the police and teams from the community. I will also attend the final round," he said.(*)

Max Biaggi takes World Superbike title

After 13 years from his last title in MotoGP, Max Biaggi won another championship title in completely different world - World Superbike championship. It took four year in World Superbikes for Max Biaggi to find right conditions and win the title, once again with Aprilia, manufacturer with whom he also made his greatest achievements in MotoGP championship.

Consistency was the key to success of Max Biaggi, as he won 9 of total 24 races in 2010, with addition of two second and two third places. Combined with lack of consistency of his competitors, this brought World Superbike championship title to Max Biaggi with two races remaining (one round), even with his worst result of the season - 11th place in race 1 and 5th place in race 2 in Imola.

Last round of the World Superbike championship will take place in Magny Cours circuit in France and will be the chance for Max Biaggi to seal Manufacturers title for Aprilia, which would be complete success for Italian team.

San Remo to be World Challenge

The 52nd edition of Rallye Sanremo actually started on August 24th when entry opened. This first important phase that will lead to start the engines and wave the starting flag, will close on September 13th. The organizers of AC Sanremo started working long ago already, because the organization of an event that with the time became an icon in international rallying, requires the maximum effort and accuracy in all details.

The event will be highly competitive but with attention to safety, two aspects that always characterized Rallye Sanremo, that this year will take place from September 21st to 25th, and is valid both for the Italian Rally Championship and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Two different championships that proceed in parallel as usual during this event on the Ligurian west coast: on one side the Italian rallying aces ready to challenge among them to win and show off on the international “stage” and on the other side the international drivers that will arrive once again in Liguria to fight for win and challenge the “home” drivers.

Eleven special stages for 220.030 timed kilometers and a total route of 465.630 km. These are the main characteristics of a race that will confirm, also in 2010, its beauty and that will offer great motorsport’s moments, like the ones that right here inspired the entire world rallying.

“The 2010 edition will be quite classic again – said Sergio Maiga, President of the Organizing Committee – A first leg closing with the usual grand final of the “Night Ring” and a second leg less tough but not less demanding. The route will be quite tight and not very different from the last few years. Also this year edition will maintain the characteristics of few but long special stages, that I consider as for “tough men”, very demanding both on drivers and cars. We hope to have a good entry list of drivers and teams, considering what happened in both the Championships we are about to represent and also for the appreciation showed by several people in the past”.

As usual Rallye Sanremo will have quite an important media support, especially on television thanks to Eurosport world broadcast and RAI Sport that will broadcast live SS9 during the second day of the event, at 01.00 pm. RAI offered this service throughout the whole Italian rallying season.

THE PROGRAM OF THE RACE: In the second half of September Sanremo, a town for vacations, a town of songs (the Saremo Italian Music Festival), a town with an astonishing natural beauty placed in a unique territory, but above all a town of “rally”, will be once again the world stage for the best Italian and international drivers and teams.

The recce of the route will take place on September 21st and 22nd with specified timings and under the strict control of the Marshals. After this first “competitive prelude”, that will be for sure quite important for the final result, competitors will undergo administrative checks and scrutineering, starting in the evening on Wednesday 22nd (from 06.00 pm to 11.00 pm), at the Old railway station in Sanremo. The same day ad 04.00 pm the Rally Village, located as usual inside the Service Park along the sea front, will open. The location will allow anyone to be part of the colorful and exciting rallying world.

Administrative checks and scrutineering will continue the next day, Thursday September 23rd. from 09.00 am to 04.00 pm. The Shakedown, the racing cars’ test, will take place from 12.30 pm to 05.00 pm, at San Romolo.

The race will start at 01.00 pm on Friday September 24th. It’ll be a tough though exciting day that will close in Sanremo after midnight. The challenge will take place on roads that form part of rallying history: Coldirodi, Apricale and Monte Bignone. These special stages will be run first one at the time and then all together in the fearsome “Ring” of 44 km. After six special stages competitors would have covered 108,610 timed kilometers out of a total of 220.

Saturday September 25th, the final day, there will be other five special stages. The short stage of Bajardo, less than two kilometers long, will be broadcasted live by RAI Sport, enough to let viewers appreciate the peculiarity of road races. The special stages of Monte Ceppo and Passo Teglia are almost 30 km long each one, so is not going to be really a “quiet” day. The second day will comprehend other 111,420 timed kilometers. The final arrival is provided at 03.37 pm.

SEVEN YAERS LATER WRC CARS ARE BACK IN SANREMO
Who said “Sanremo is always Sanremo”? It’s true anyway… Sanremo is always ready to surprise, mainly in motorsport, the so called “town of flowers” is always ready to give its best. Seven years after their last evolutions on the tarmac roads of the Ligurian west coast, World Rally Cars are back where they were protagonists of legendary challenges. As a matter of fact “Legend” is the name of the race created on purpose for the queens of the world rally series that will be in town again, thanks to the brilliant intuition of Sergio Maiga and the members of his staff: “The idea – explains Maiga – is to give to as many drivers as possible the opportunity to pour out their passion in the same event together with the big drivers of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and the Italian Rally Championship, including drivers who, due to different reasons, do not have the possibility to compete in a highly demanding race as historically is Rallye Sanremo”.

“Sanremo Legend”, will be a “race in the race”, reserved not only to historic cars but to all cars, including expired approval cars. These cars will challenge on a shorter route, 8 special stages for a total of 120 timed kilometers. Sure a shorter route but though exciting running it.

Webber: I 'feel' like I'm Red Bull's No1

The fractious relationship between the two has hit the headlines all season, with Australian Webber being furious at his team favouring his young team-mate.

The two drivers crashed in Turkey when vying for the lead, and things got even worse at Silverstone when Webber had a front wing taken off his car and placed on Vettel's to help the German.

Despite this apparent clear signal that Vettel was the number one, Webber responded by winning the British Grand Prix, and took great delight in proclaiming "Not bad for a No. 2 driver" over his car radio as he crossed the line.

Webber has now proclaimed himself to be Red Bull's number one driver, and lifted the lid on the lack of a personal relationship between him and Vettel.

"We don't hang out," Webber told the Sydney Telegraph. "We work for the team and we work professionally.

"We have a big age difference so we didn't have much in common even before we began racing each other at this level.

"I don't know him at all away from the racetrack."

While Vettel has landed pole positions after pole position, he has struggled to turn those into wins, and trails Webber by 28 points in the Drivers' Championship.

Webber is second behind Lewis Hamilton, and he says that he is currently the number one ahead of the 23-year-old Vettel, who he warned could be out of a job if performances don't pick up.

"If you get creamed by your team-mate constantly then you won't be in this business long," Webber said.

"At this stage of my career and when you get somebody who is arguably or supposed to be world class on paper - in some people's eyes - you have to be on top of your game so you don't get steamrolled.

"You can be the No. 2 driver after a couple of races very easily. You have to be in there and it is a serious sport protecting your corner. I feel sensational in the team right now and I have rarely felt like a No. 2.

"I have had times when I have felt like I was a No. 2 and I reckon Seb has had times where he says, 'Oh, I am No. 2 now'.

"I feel like I am No. 1 at the moment, but it ebbs and flows."

Schumi: The best my car could achieve

The seven-time World Champion failed, for the fourth successive grand prix, to make it through to the qualifying shoot-out, finishing up in 12th place.

Schumacher, though, reckons that's the best he could have achieved as he struggled with the balance of his W01 throughout the weekend.

"I am obviously not very happy with our qualifying today but my position is probably what my car was giving me," Schumacher said.

"We did not have a perfect balance, especially in some corners where the car was a bit loose, but then we did not come here expecting to achieve a great performance.

"However the race will be long tomorrow and having been welcomed so nicely by all of my Italian fans, I obviously wish to at least grab some points for them."

His team-mate Nico Rosberg had a better afternoon as he qualified in seventh place, a second off the pace of the leading Ferrari of Fernando Aloonso.

"Seventh place is definitely the best performance that was possible for us today so both I and the team can be pleased with that. However we obviously want to be further up the grid so we shouldn't get too used to being happy with such results.

"In race trim, we are probably a little stronger than in qualifying, so I can hopefully gain a place or two tomorrow if something happens amongst the top six guys, and look to achieve some good points."

England Insists Rooney Scandal Is No Distraction

Paris - England was among a number of fancied sides which began the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with handsome wins, but its trip to Switzerland on Monday came amid a tabloid storm surrounding Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United striker played a key role in England’s 4-0 win at home to Bulgaria on Friday, but damaging newspaper revelations on Sunday alleged he frequented a prostitute while his wife, Coleen, was pregnant.

It comes at an inopportune time for coach Fabio Capello, who is trying to right the England ship after a disappointing World Cup, but James Milner says Rooney will not be affected by the scandal.

“I think you want the best players out on the field and he’s obviously one of them. He showed that the other night,” said the Manchester City midfielder. “He’s a top, top player and you want to put out the strongest team possible.”

England looked close to its impressive pre-World Cup form as it picked apart Bulgaria, but in Switzerland Capello and company face a team that has qualified for the last four major tournaments in succession.

There were few hiccups for the continent’s heavyweights, as the qualifying competition for the tournament to be jointly hosted by Ukraine and Poland began in earnest on Friday.

Spain won 4-0 in Liechtenstein, beaten World Cup finalist the Netherlands put five unanswered goals past San Marino, and Italy came from a goal down to defeat Estonia 2-1 in Tallinn.

Italy will expect to take maximum points from its game with habitual minnow the Faroe Islands in Florence. The 2006 world champion was not at its best against Estonia, but new coach Cesare Prandelli says he saw plenty of encouraging signs.

“Without a good footing you can’t go very far but it was more than just [Andrea] Pirlo and [Antonio] Cassano that pleased me — we’re becoming a team,” he said. “We’ve rediscovered the ability to play football with courage.”

The Netherlands, for whom new Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored a hat-trick against San Marino, takes on Finland in Rotterdam in Group E.

One high-profile side that failed to impress in its opening qualifying fixture was France, which fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Belarus in the absence of several key players through injury and suspension.

Les Bleus, European champions in 2000, now face a daunting trip to face Bosnia-Herzegovina and coach Laurent Blanc says his young side must not shirk the physical battles that are sure to await them in Sarajevo.

“We’ll have to increase our physical play,” Blanc said. “We’re still a bit tender, the Bosnians will intimidate us and we’ll need to have weapons to respond.”

Belarus has never qualified for a major tournament but it could go clear at the top of Group D if its defeats Romania, which was held to a 1-1 draw in Albania in their group opener. Portugal, which fell to Spain in the last 16 at the World Cup, visits Norway.

The Euro 2004 finalists shipped four goals in an extraordinary 4-4 draw at home to Cyprus on Friday, prompting center-back Ricardo Carvalho to urge his team to tighten up defensively for the trip to Oslo. “We have to be more compact, especially at the back,” the Real Madrid defender told the UEFA Web site.

With reigning world and European champion Spain playing Argentina in a friendly in Buenos Aires, Scotland can go top of Group I if it beats Liechtenstein in Glasgow and Lithuania fails to win in the Czech Republic. (Tom Williams)

PSSI Treasurer Sentenced To 5 Years for Slaying Wife

Jakarta - An official of the Indonesian Football Association has been found guilty of killing his wife and was sentenced to five years in prison by the South Jakarta District Court.

Prosecutors had sought a three-year sentence for Yosep Revo, treasurer for the association, also known as PSSI,

However, Judge Artha Theresia on Monday tacked on an additional two years, citing Yosep’s brutal resolution of a dispute with his spouse.

Prosecutors said that on Feb. 10, Yosep’s wife, Maria Imakulata Reni Widowati, came home and had an argument with Yosep, who had accused his wife of having an affair.

In a fit of anger, Yosep then beat his wife to death with a laptop computer, prosecutors said.

Artha was quoted by news portal Detik.com as saying Yosep had only received five years behind bars because he was the family’s breadwinner, had no prior convictions and had admitted guilt. Peace between the families of Yosep and the victim was also a mitigating factor.

Yosep looked away from the judges as the decision was read, Detik reported.

Casmus Refra, a lawyer for Yosep, said he would appeal the verdict, pointing to the need for his client to be with his children.

The PSSI had earlier said it would wait until after the verdict was delivered before deciding whether Yosep would be dismissed from his post.

Yosep was elected to the PSSI executive committee in April 2009 to replace Hamka Yandhu, who is currently charged with graft during his time as a Golkar Party lawmaker.(Wimbo Satwiko)

As Indonesian Football Team Goes on Break, ‘Slight Improvement’ Seen

Jakarta - Alfred Riedl wants his squad to get all the rest it can. Once the national training camp reopens in October, it will be all work for the Indonesia football team.

National coach Riedl will break camp today for the Idul Fitri holiday and won’t meet his players again until training resumes on Oct. 3.

Heading to the recess, Riedl is relieved to have wrapped up a pair of local friendlies with what he calls “a slightly improved performance” by his team.

He also voiced his opinion on the series of international friendlies the National Team Body (BTN) set up for next month, calling the Ivory Coast match on Oct. 13 “a test of fitness” for his squad.

Not surprisingly, the national team won both its tune-up matches against Premier Division clubs, the Austrian coach’s first games at the helm of the Merah Putih.

Riedl found the way his squad played in a 3-0 defeat of Pro Titan in Jakarta on Sunday more pleasing than the team’s first effort on Thursday in which it struggled to a 4-1 victory over Persita Tangerang.

As in the first match, Riedl divided his squad into two sides, each of which played one extended half of 60 minutes. While he observed that his team lacked aggressiveness, Riedl did say his team “played a little better.”

“The first team looked fresh compared to the second team, which missed some chances in the second half. But I think we played a little better than in the first match,” Riedl said.

Defender Ricardo Salampessy and forward Yongki Aribowo missed Sunday’s friendly because of injury. In their absence, Riedl tinkered with his game plan as he resorted to a 4-2-3-1 formation in the second half and found that the adjustment worked.

“We missed Yongki, so the second team had to play under a new system. I think [the team] played quite well, but it’s still not what I wanted to see. I want the boys to fight for every position,” Riedl said.

For the second straight game, it was forward Bambang Pamungkas who stood out.

Playing for the first-half side, Bambang asserted himself from the start. He set up a pinpoint cross to defender Nova Arianto, but Nova’s shot sailed over the bar. After midfielder Arif Suyono broke the deadlock, Bambang’s free kick made it 2-0.

The national team’s second-half squad broke through Pro Titan’s defense and had several scoring chances. However, lapses in midfield left Riedl’s players vulnerable in defense. Forward M Isnaini scored the third and final goal.

Riedl said he wanted to play “a weaker opponent” before his squad faces Ivory Coast. BTN said Indonesia was due to play Uruguay in a friendly on Oct. 9, but Riedl said the Ivory Coast match was the only one confirmed.

“According to my information the match against Ivory Coast is already set up, but before that we want to look for a relatively weak opponent that we can play,” the coach said.

“But we have to look at the players’ conditioning when they return to camp. I know Ivory Coast is much stronger than us, but I hope the boys will be much fitter than they are now so we can play better.”

Between the holiday break and the resumption of the national training camp, the players will report to their respective clubs, which are gearing up for the opening of the Indonesian Super League on Sept. 26.

Around that time, Riedl will also be busy. He will fly to Hanoi to watch the friendly between Vietnam and North Korea on Sept. 24.

Riedl and BTN head Iman Arif will then proceed to Amsterdam to meet with Netherlands football officials regarding BTN’s plans to hold a training camp for Dutch football players of Indonesian descent.

Capirossi undergoes successful finger surgery

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP star Loris Capirossi has undergone a successful operation to repair the damage caused to his right hand in his opening lap coming-together with Ducati Corse rival Nicky Hayden in the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano on Sunday, his 200th premier class outing.

The Italian veteran had a 90-minute procedure to reconstruct the bone in his little finger and further work to re-attach the severed tendon in the same digit. The operation was performed by Dr. Oliviero Soragni at the San Marino Hospital on Monday afternoon, and Capirossi is now back home in Monte Carlo where he will begin his recuperation and healing period.

The 37-year-old 'record-man' – who made his 300th GP start in the 2010 Qatar curtain-raiser back in April – is expected to make a full recovery from the injury and should be able to regain complete use of his damaged finger. It is not yet confirmed whether or not he will be able to compete in the next round of the MotoGP World Championship at Aragon in Spain on 19 September.

“The operation went very well and I am very pleased with what Dr. Soragni told me after I came out of surgery,” Capirossi confirmed. “Dr. Costa was also present, and he knows how the injury will heal and he will help me to make the right decision about when I can ride again.

“The bone has been reconstructed and I have been told I will get full movement back – which is great news – but at the moment the finger is immobilised so I don't cause any damage to the excellent work the surgeon has done. Although I am in a bit of pain, this is still nothing compared to what happened at Misano on Sunday, and once again I want to send my wishes and prayers to Tomizawa-san's family in their time of great sadness.”

Shoya Tomizawa dies of Misano injuries

Shoya Tomizawa has died as a result of injuries sustained in the Moto2 race on Sunday at Misano.

The Japanese - who made history by winning the first ever Moto2 Grand Prix at Qatar this year, then took pole and a podium at round two - fell from fourth place on lap 12 and was then hit at high speed by Alex de Angelis and Scott Redding.

The official statement from Dorna announcing the death was as follows:

"On Sunday 5th September during the Moto2 race at the Misano World Circuit, rider Shoya Tomizawa aged 19 suffered a serious crash and subsequent cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma.

"Given the seriousness of his condition - especially for the thoracic and abdominal trauma - Tomizawa was immediately treated at the Misano World Circuit medical centre and put under artificial respiration.

"The rider was taken by ambulance to the Riccione hospital accompanied by two doctors - helicopter was not used in order to allow for the proper respiratory support to be administered. Despite various attempts to resuscitate him Shoya sadly succumbed to his injuries at 14.20.

"Everybody involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Shoya's family and friends at this tragic loss."

de Angelis walked away from the huge accident, while Redding received ten stitches for a back laceration. Neither rider had any chance to avoid Tomizawa, who was sixth in the world championship heading into the race.

2010 was Tomizawa's second season in grand prix racing, after finishing 17th in the 2009 250cc class.

Prior to last year, Tomizawa had been a wild-card rider at his home Motegi event in 2006 (125cc), 2007 (125cc) and 2008 (250cc).

Tomizawa was runner-up in the 125cc Japanese Championship in 2006 and the 250cc Japanese Championship in 2008.

The last time a rider was killed during a motorcycle grand prix was Daijiro Kato, in the MotoGP class, at Suzuka 2003.

Our thoughts are with Tomizawa's family and friends.

Honda pays tribute to Tomizawa

Honda Motor Co. Ltd and Honda Racing Corporation would like to express their great sadness at the passing away of Shoya Tomizawa following an accident in today’s San Marino Grand Prix.

Tomizawa crashed on the 12th lap of the Moto2 race. The Japanese rider was immediately treated at trackside, then at the circuit medical centre and then at Riccione hospital. Numerous attempts were made to resuscitate him but at 14.20hrs he succumbed to cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma.

Both Honda Motor Co. Ltd and Honda Racing Corporation would like to extend their deepest condolences to Tomizawa’s family and friends.

Nineteen-year-old Tomizawa, from Chiba, was a very popular rider in the MotoGP paddock, known for his sunny smile and determination on the racetrack. He made his Grand Prix debut at Motegi in the 125 class in 2006. In 2008 he took the runner-up spot in the 250 All-Japan Championship. He became a full-time GP rider last season, taking 17th place in the 250 World Championship. This year he moved into the new Moto2 series and made history by winning the opening round.

Shuhei Nakamoto, Vice-President, Honda Racing Corporation
“We are very saddened by this news and our thoughts of course are now with Shoya’s family and friends. He was at the start of his Grand Prix career and today we have lost fine young rider and a talent for the future. Shoya had fighting spirit, we will all miss him very much…”

With Tiger’s Game in Shambles, Players Scramble for PGA Tour Glory

Paramus, New Jersey - The dominance of Tiger Woods becomes even more defined when he can’t beat anyone at all.

In the years when he wasn’t winning a major or three, Woods compensated by winning at least five times on the US PGA Tour against some of the strongest fields on some of the toughest courses.

He won 31 times and six majors in the previous five years.

The only time during that span that Woods did not win USPGA Tour player of the year was in 2008, when he made it through only half the year until his knee gave out.

Padraig Harrington captured the last two majors to win the award. He won four times in six starts, including a US Open.

The FedEx Cup playoffs get under way this week at The Barclays, and Woods is at No. 112 in the standings, right between Bob Estes and Cameron Beckman.

Dominance has given way to parity.

Five players have multiple victories this year — Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Justin Rose and Hunter Mahan — yet none of them has more than two wins, and none of them won a major.

Why has no one filled the void?

“That’s how good Tiger Wood is — that’s what I make of it,” Adam Scott said on Tuesday.

Golf is bunched up at the moment, at least on the US PGA Tour.

“No one has separated themselves,” Mahan said. “Tiger hasn’t won five times. You’ve got a bunch of guys who have won twice.”

In its first three years, the FedEx Cup has provided four great tournaments after the majors were over, and the list of winners backs that up — three wins for Woods; two apiece for Mickelson, Stricker, Vijay Singh and Camilo Villegas; and Heath Slocum as the outsider, but only after beating Woods, Stricker, Harrington and Els on the last hole.

This year — thanks to Woods — it’s a little different.

The four playoff events over the next five weeks will likely decide who is the best player on the US PGA Tour this year. Not only is there no clear-cut favorite for player of the year, it’s hard to determine the front-runner.

Winning the FedEx Cup might be all it takes for Els to be voted player of the year. Then again, it’s mathematically possible for him to do that without winning another tournament. Can a guy get voted best player with only two wins and no majors?

The defining shot of this goofy season was the 6-iron Mickelson hit through the pines on the 13th at Augusta National when he won the Masters.

He is the only major champion in the FedEx Cup because the other three — Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen and Martin Kaymer — were not US Tour members.

For the eighth time over the last three months, Mickelson will have yet another chance to replace Woods atop the world ranking. It should have happened by now, as poorly as Woods has performed. Trouble is, Mickelson hasn’t been much better.

He has not finished in the top 10 in the four tournaments he has played since the US Open.

Mahan won in Phoenix, got engaged to a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, then won his first World Golf Championship title at Firestone. He would get consideration with a victory or two in the next month, plus the $10 million prize for the FedEx Cup.

The same holds true for Stricker, Furyk and Rose. Someone needs to separate themselves from the pack.

“I guess there’s a lot of people in the mix,” said Dustin Johnson, who recently lost the PGA Championship for grounding his club harmlessly in a bunker. “But whoever has a good playoffs will probably be the top candidate.” (Doug Ferguson)

Asia’s Grand Slam Renaissance Put on Hold, Again

Asia’s wait for its first Grand Slam singles winner goes on.

As Taiwan’s Chan Yung-Jan walked off court after being hammered 6-1, 6-0 by top seed Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday, the continent’s interest in the final Grand Slam of the year dwindled.

Asia’s failure to get a single player into the fourth round of either the men’s or women’s draw at Flushing Meadows is a disappointing outlay bearing in mind the promise shown of late by a growing hotbed of tennis talent.

Asia looked set to break its Grand Slam record at January’s Australian Open when Chinese duo Li Na and Zheng Jie reached the semifinals.

But the rest of 2010 proved disappointing with just three more quarterfinalists in the subsequent Grand Slams, Li and Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan at Wimbledon and Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova at the French Open.

Asia’s longest-lasting player at the current US Open, Chan Yung-Jan, is not overly concerned about the continent’s poor showing in New York.

“For our country it’s better for us — it’s the best result we’ve ever had,” said the world No. 77. “I know everyone’s out of the tournament from Asia but we are growing all the time and Asian tennis is getting better,” she said.

In all, there are six men in the world’s top 100 but the continent’s male contingent boasts just one Grand Slam quarterfinal spot in the last 15 years courtesy of Lu in London in July.

A first Asian Grand Slam winner looks far likelier to come from the current crop of women, who boast nine players in the top 100, including the 21-year-old Chan .

“You never know who’s going to make the breakthrough and when,” she said. “For the moment, everybody is working hard and you never know what’s going to happen next.”
