Lorenzo Needs Magic to Close Gap on Stoner

Laguna Seca, California - MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo has long been inspired by Laguna Seca and its infamous Corkscrew turn and he will be banking on that special spur when he defends his US Grand Prix title this week.

With nine races left this season, the 24-year-old Spaniard trails Australian Casey Stoner by 15 points in the overall standings and would dearly love to trim that deficit further with another triumphant display on Sunday.

Lorenzo made up some ground on Stoner when he snatched second place for Yamaha at last week’s German Grand Prix, one place better than the Australian.

“We are very strong at the moment and we will try to continue to reduce our gap behind Casey,” Lorenzo said on Friday.

“I have had great moments at Laguna Seca, above all last year when I won but also in 2009 when I got pole position even with a big crash and at the end got a podium.”

Two years ago, Lorenzo took pole position despite crashing and partially dislocating his collar bone in qualifying. He finished the race third behind winner Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi after a gutsy performance.

Twelve months ago, the Spaniard again started on pole but this time he benefited from a spectacular crash by compatriot Pedrosa on lap 12 before powering across the finish line 3.517 seconds ahead of Ducati’s Stoner.

“That win was very special,” Lorenzo said of his 11th MotoGP triumph. “Winning at Laguna Seca was something I’d always dreamed of.”

Lorenzo is certain, though, to face heated competition on Sunday from 2007 US Grand Prix champion Stoner and Pedrosa.

“It’s a circuit I’ve always enjoyed quite good results at and we’ve always been naturally quite fast on it,” said Stoner, who has finished on the podium in his last seven races. “We’ll be looking to improve our results from the past three weekends. Podiums are great but I’m here to win races.”

Pedrosa, who sealed his return from injury by winning the German Grand Prix on Sunday, is another long-time fan of Laguna Seca, which is scenically laid out in rolling hills overlooking the Monterey Peninsula.

“The atmosphere there is special and I’d like to close the first part of the season with a good feeling,” the 25-year-old said. Reuters

Stoner Eyes Repeat of  2007 Czech Win

Brno, Czech Republic - Australia’s Casey Stoner is looking to extend his lead in the MotoGP standings in Sunday’s Czech Grand Prix in Brno and add one more success to his five victories in this year’s 10 races.

Bolstered by victory in the US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca on July 24, before a three-week summer break, Honda rider Stoner will seek to repeat his only Brno win from 2007, the year in which he won his only world championship title.

“It’s a circuit I’ve always enjoyed and I believe with the results we’ve had in the past years we can expect to have a good race there,” Stoner told the MotoGP Web site.

But he will face tough competition from last year’s winner, Spanish Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo, second in the overall standings, on the 5.403-kilometer circuit about 180 kilometers southeast of the Czech capital Prague.

“The fact that it’s very fast and flowing has helped the Yamahas in the past seasons and I think Jorge will be strong there, so I will be watching for him,” the 25-year-old Stoner said.

The Australian, who came in third in Brno last year behind his Spanish teammate Dani Pedrosa, is now on 193 points in the overall standings, 20 points ahead of defending world champion Lorenzo.

“After the long break we are going to Brno completely recharged and ready to fight and try to reduce the gap to Casey,” Lorenzo said.

“This is a track I like and where I won last year. I hope we can start the second half of the season on the podium.”

Italy’s Andrea Dovizioso of Honda is third overall, 30 points behind Lorenzo but with a solid advance on his teammate Pedrosa. Italian Ducati rider Valentino Rossi, fifth overall, will come to Brno as the rider with the best record from the circuit with five MotoGP wins here.

The Brno circuit named after Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of former Czechoslovakia, was opened in 1987 to replace an old nearby track that became too dangerous for riders. Agence France-Presse

Rio Haryanto's Tire Gamble Pays Off in Wet GP3 Race

After struggling in the past four legs of the GP3 Series, Rio Haryanto returned to the spotlight over the weekend, braving the rain to take out Race 1 of the German event at Nurburgring.

It was an emotional result for the Marussia Manor Racing driver, who started third off the grid on Saturday. “It’s such a special moment and I’m honestly just a bit speechless,” the 18-year-old was quoted as saying on the GP3 Series official Web site. “I’m from Indonesia and there are not many racing drivers [from the country] so to win in these conditions, it’s such a special day.”

The race was full of drama as light rain fell when the drivers lined up on the grid.

Rio was the only driver who stuck with slick tires. MW Arden’s pole-sitter Mitch Evans, Status GP’s Antonio Felix Da Costa, who started second, and fourth starter Tom Dillmann from Addax switching to wet tires before the race.

The gamble paid off, as the rain stopped just after the race started, and Rio battled for the lead with Evans and Lewis Williamson of MW Arden.

In tough conditions, Evans was at one stage 1.1 seconds ahead of Williamson, with Rio dropping to fourth after being passed by Lotus Art’s Valtteri Botas. But Evans had to surrender the lead to Williamson as he was handed a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for not having his wheels fitted at the three-minute race-start warning.

Rio had a three-way battle with Williamson and Botas in the last five laps, and the Indonesian managed to hold on to take his first win of the season, followed by Williamson and Botas. The win ensured Rio moved up to 11th place in the standings with 13 points.

“I just tried to drive as smoothly as possible and find the driest lines on track,” Rio said. “We were just trying to be gentle and not make any mistakes. It’s so easy to run off the track and miss your braking point or to lock up your wheels. But in the end I managed to hold on.”

In Race 2, Rio finished in 10th place. Bottas secured his maiden win, followed by Alexander Sims and Nigel Melker.

Last year, in his debut season, Rio finished with a win in Turkey and was fifth overall in the final standings.

Rio was the first Indonesian to test a Formula One car, driving for Virgin Racing in November. (Wimbo Satwiko)

Horner warns of Red Bull attack

Given the considerable cushions Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel hold over their rivals in the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships, it would be easy for team and driver to play the percentage game.

Although McLaren and Ferrari have made strides in playing catch up, it seems inconceivable the Milton Keynes-based marque and the 24-year-old German will not retain their titles this year.

Mistakes will have to be made if Red Bull and Vettel are to be denied, yet from Horner's perspective, there will be no let up.

"If you look at Sebastian's 11 races this season he's had six wins, four seconds and a fourth," said Horner.

"That isn't a bad run of results, so the target for the team is to continue that kind of scoring.

"We've seen Ferrari and McLaren are competitive, and not just in recent races, but this year has been deceptive in many respects.

"It's just that we've been able to maximise our opportunities, and the intention is for us to continue like that in the remaining eight races.

"These next two events (Belgium and Italy) have historically been our weakest venues in terms of our package given the horsepower emphasis that is placed upon them.

"But we're looking forward to the final eight races, and we intend to attack them, just as we have the previous 11 so far."

Vettel: Anything is possible

Vettel clinched his ninth pole position of the campaign at Spa on Saturday afternoon, easily quicker than the chasing pack in the wet conditions. Vettel's best was a 1:48.298, 0.432s up on McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

"It was a difficult session all in all," he said. "Q1 and Q2 with the tricky conditions, and the circuit drying up very quickly and it being tricky on inters - the main target was to get through.

"I didn't feel comfortable right in the beginning, but in Q2 we made a big step forward. I rediscovered Spa in a way and found some better lines than all weekend and in Q3 we were quite sure it was dry (enough for dry) tyres but also quite sure if it didn't rain it would be down to the last lap."

But while Saturday may have yielded Vettel's ninth pole, it wasn't an easy outing for the reigning World Champ, who admits his lap time was also down to getting the timing just right for when the track was at its best.

"I wasn't really happy yesterday or this morning, but we did the right steps to come back and especially when it was drying up. If you would put your money on that around here, all in all we got the timing right, especially in the last qualifying session it was feeling good and we got it together all the time.

"I was trying to make my way around in the last two laps [in Q3], trying to get temperature in the tyres, trying to push as hard as I could.

"Lewis was right in front of me a couple of seconds ahead and I saw him locking up, last thing. I was happy with the car towards the end in the dry and it seemed to get quicker and quicker.

"Not an easy session with conditions changing and right after it finished it started to change again, but here, as we saw today, anything is possible."

Looking ahead to the 44-lap Belgian GP, at present the forecast is for a dry afternoon, however, at Spa the weather is known for changing rapidly.

And it's because of that factor that Vettel reckons a lot could happen come Sunday afternoon.

"It is one of those races, anything can happen from start-to-finish, we will see. The best forecast around here is to look up and see what is happening!

"We had a good balance in the end in the dry, the beginning of qualifying I didn't really feel comfortable. Even in the wet we found direction and it should be ready for tomorrow, it is a long race so I am looking forward to it."

Schumi: Only way left to go is forward

Celebrating 20 years in Formula One at the track where it all started, Schumacher had hoped for a good performance in Saturday's qualifying, giving him the platform to achieve a solid result come Sunday's race.

But it was not to be.

Less than two minutes into qualifying, Schumacher, on his out-lap, lost his rear right wheel, leaving the German unable to control his W02 and crashing into the barriers.

The seven-time World Champ, though, is still positive about his chances in Sunday's 44-lap Belgian GP.

"Well, obviously I would have wished for a different end to today's qualifying, but it is difficult to drive on three wheels - even if I should have the experience to do so in Spa.

"Seriously, this is certainly something that should not occur, but then this is also Formula One; we are working at the highest level but still things can happen.

"At first, I wasn't sure what had happened, as I just felt myself lose the back end suddenly which is why I instantly apologised to the team. But then I saw the wheel off the car and understood the reason why I had lost control.

"Trying to find the good in the bad, I'd probably say that I still have some fresh sets of tyres left, and that there is only one direction to go tomorrow: forward."

The Jak's office moves to GBK

Die-hard fans of Persija soccer club Jakarta, known as “The Jak Mania”, have a new office in the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Center, Central Jakarta.

Previously the soccer fan club’s secretariat was situated in the Lebak Bulus Sports Center, South Jakarta.

“Mahfudin Nigara, director of Gelora Bung Karno’s development and management, allocated a place in the sports center for the Jak with some conditions,” Persija Jakarta chairman Ferry Paulus said Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.

One condition included a guarantee from The Jak members to maintain security around the GBK stadium.

“I only expect a commitment from the Jak. It has also been included in the contract,” said Nigara.

The Jak had to move out of the Lebak Bulus Sports Center because it will be converted into a mass rapid transit terminal, the development of which will start later this year.

Olympic champion Lin Dan takes world title

Olympic badminton champion Lin Dan had an ideal preparation for his title defense next year when he won his fourth world title on Sunday in the Wembley arena that will be used for the 2012 Games.

The second-seeded Chinese player saved two match points against top-seeded Malaysian Lee Chong Wei and went on to a 20-22, 21-17, 23-21 victory. It was probably the best encounter of the 24 between the two great rivals.

Lin rarely dominated the match and there were moments, particularly at 16-13 in the final game, when it seemed Lee's court coverage, patience and ability to turn defense into attack would secure victory.

But when it mattered, it was Lin who delivered.

Bali Cultural Center organizing Elizabeth Taylor film show

Denpasar, Bali - The Bali Cultural Center is organizing a cinema program on August 19-20 to remember the dedication of the late Elizabeth Taylor to the film world.

"The program is to be held in cooperation with Udayana Scientific Club (USC) and the Sahaja Community," Sri Puspita, coordinator of the "Elizabeth Taylor Film Show" said here on Friday.

She said Elisabeth Taylor was one of Hollywood`s most accomplished film stars although some said her talent was actually not so spectacular.

Apart from all the controversies surrounding her, Liz Tailor was a person who cared much for other people and had done a lot of charitable things , especially for HIV and AIDS sufferers.

"It is hoped the showing of a documentary films on Liz Taylor`s journey will give added value to viewers," she said.

She said according to plans, six films starred by Liz Taylor would be shown on the first day, including "National Velvet", "Cat on a Hot Thin Roof" and "Butterfield 8."

Butterfield 8 was the film that gave Elizabeth Taylor her first Oscar.

"On the second day, the film to be shown will be "Cleopatra" which was made in Britain and the US at a cost of UD$60 million," she said.

Elizabeth Taylor played the role of Queen Cleopatra for which she has always been remembered until now.

Another film to shown was "The Elizabeth Taylor Story", an 86 minute long film on her controversial private life.

The program will be closed with "Who`s Afraid of Virginia Wolf" a marriage drama in which she played with Richard Burton and from which she won another Oscar as best actrees.(*)

Fitness of national team members below medium level

Solo, C. Java - The 20 percent fitness of the national soccer team members is still lower than medium, so that the team needs effective training programs, a coach assistant said.

"Compared with the fitness of other Asian Pre World Cup 2014 teams, that of the national team members is still lower than medium," national coach assistant Liestiadi said here on Sunday afternoon following the national team`s exercise in the Manahan sports stadium.

Thus, the national soccer players need to increase their stamina to at least 30 percent.

Although the team`s stamina after the exercises for three days in Solo Manahan stadium has increased, but they have not reached a high level, so that their physical condition needs to be improved, he said.

The coordination and communication among the team members should be conducted more effectively and smoothly, Liestiadi cited.

In addition, the national team members also corrested their playing system in a bid to make some elementary analysis, Liestiadi said, explaining that effective communication is needed in the soccer.

Prior to the match against Iran, there are still three weeks of preparations, he said.

"In the fasting month of Ramadhan, we should be able to adjust the condition of the players to enable them to play games, apart from the physical exercise only," he said.

Meanwhile, physical coach Raymond Verheijen left Indonesia on Sunday because he is also needed by the Wales team. (B003/H-NG)

Honda refusing to get complacent, wary of Lorenzo

HRC principal Shuhei Nakamoto insists his team cannot afford to get complacent in the fight for the 2011 MotoGP World Championship, despite winning seven of the opening ten races this season.

Heading into the second-half of the year, Casey Stoner currently leads the standings with five wins, but his advantage is being pegged back at 20 points to Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo, who has matched his rival for consistency, even if he has won just two races in comparison.

Indeed, though Honda is already enjoying its most successful MotoGP season since 2006 (when it won eight races over an entire year), Nakamoto remains wary of the threat coming from Lorenzo, labelling him as a 'tough competitor'.

“Honda has won seven out of ten races so far. Considering we only won four in the whole of the last season, you'd think we have it in the bag. But Lorenzo is a very tough competitor. He's not going to give up, and I think we will continue to see a pattern of wins and losses for the rest of the season.

“A single slip could upset the whole championship battle. We're going to be treating every race with the utmost seriousness, concentrating on avoiding any mistakes that could cost us points.”

Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, though Nakamoto is delighted with Honda's upturn in form this season, one that sees it occupy first, third and fourth in the standings, he is particularly eager to see an all-Honda podium before the year is out.

“We are facing some pretty strong competition so I can't say it [all-Honda podium] will be easy to pull it off. On the other hand, it's a dream we've been chasing for some time and we'll be going all out in the remaining races, to try and realise that dream as soon as we can, and also of course to take the Championship. I hope you all will keep following our progress and helping us with your support.”

Despite its success, Honda is tipped to return to a two-man factory Repsol team made up of Stoner and Dani Pedrosa in 2012, with Andrea Dovizioso switching to LCR Honda and Marco Simoncelli remaining at Gresini Honda.

Mapfre Aspar Team get back to work at Brno

After a two week break following their visit to the shortest circuit on the MotoGP calendar, the teams and riders this weekend return to action at one of the longest. They will need every bit of recharged energy as they look to tackle a challenging circuit over 5km in length that plays host to the eleventh round of the season.

Recovered, motivated and ready to continue with the excellent form that he signed off from the first half of the season with. That is the half-term report for Héctor Barberá, who showed a clear step forward in performance levels at Mugello, Sachsenring and Laguna Seca over the past three rounds. The MAPFRE Aspar rider is keen to continue that form at Brno, a talismanic circuit for the Spaniard, who finished a stunning fourth here during his rookie 125cc season back in 2002.

Héctor Barberá:
"Brno is a special circuit for me - I managed to finish fourth here in my first season riding in the 125cc World Championship after qualifying in ninth, which is still one of my best ever races and one I will always remember. We were riding on standard kit and managed to fight with the factory riders. I love Brno and I am perfectly prepared for this one. I have done a lot of physical training over the break and I am looking forward to giving 200% on track. There are a lot of fast corners which are good for me and the goal is to improve on my best finish this season, which was sixth at Jerez, and continue the good form we have shown at Mugello, Sachsenring and Laguna Seca."

Rossi and Hayden poised for return to business

The two-week break that followed the Laguna Seca Grand Prix gave Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden time for a short vacation that both riders spent close to home, though the American rider took a brief excursion to Indianapolis. Hayden spent August 5th at Indianapolis, splitting his time between promotional activities for the upcoming Grand Prix there and riding the track aboard a Ducati 1198 SP, using the opportunity to try out the new surface that was recently applied to part of the track.

This week the championship returns to action at Brno, the Czech Republic circuit that traditionally opens the second half of the season. It’s a popular round with all the riders because the track, which was constructed in the mid-’80s, offers a great mixture of turns and elevation changes, and is fast, flowing and very wide. Valentino Rossi has claimed four podiums and seven wins across all the classes, while Hayden has one podium.

A test will take place on the Monday after the Grand Prix, and the Ducati Team will dedicate that day to working on the 800cc machine.

Valentino Rossi:
“After Laguna I took a few days of vacation, at the beach close to home. It was a short break but enough to recharge the batteries following an intense period. Now we’ll spend a nice mid-August at Brno—classic! Seriously, I’m always happy to go there. I like the track not only because it’s very nice, wide and fast, and I’ve always gone well there, but also because it’s a special place for me since it’s where I earned my first pole, my first win and my first world championship. During both the race weekend and the Monday test, we’ll continue concentrating on the bike’s setup, with the goal of reducing the gap to the lead group.”

Nicky Hayden:
“It’s been a bit of a break, but fortunately not all of it was away from bikes! On August 5 I had an opportunity to ride a Ducati 1198 SP at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the entire infield section has been resurfaced, from Turn 5 to 16, in order to eliminate the bumps that used to limit our line options. Indy was already a great track, but now it’s safer and even more fun. A big thanks to Ducati North America and IMS for all the hard work to make the test possible. I’m ready to get to Brno now. It’s a very different circuit to what we’ve been to for the last two races at the Sachsenring and Laguna Seca. Those are tight with short lap times, and Brno is definitely a big, open track. We know it won’t be easy, but we’ve just got to keep chipping away. It’s clear that everybody at Ducati is doing the maximum, so we’ll go there and try to get a good result. Obviously the test on Monday will be really important for us. I’ll probably just ride the GP11 on the race weekend and then test the new bike on Monday.”

Vittoriano Guareschi, Team Manager:
“After Laguna Seca the team had the chance to rest for a few days, even though the work at Ducati never stopped. The Test Team tried some electronics updates at Mugello, and we’ll use them in the post-race test at Brno to continue improving the setup and reduce the gap to the lead group. Filippo [Preziosi] will be on hand Monday, and we’ll continue the development work on the GP11.1 with both Valentino and Nicky.”

Bridgestone tyre allocation changes explained

It was confirmed on Thursday by the FIM that with immediate effect – in time for this weekend’s Cardion ab Grand Prix Ceské republiky – the tyre regulations for the MotoGP class would change.

Bridgestone’s preview of the Brno round explained the new regulations, which will see riders offered a greater choice of softer compounds, and the tyre manufacturer’s press officer Tom Tremayne detailed the changes in an interview with motogp.com which you can watch in the attached video.

“Bridgestone has worked very closely with the FIM, Dorna, the riders and the teams to bring about a raft of regulation changes to the tyre allocation system,” said Tremayne. “This means that instead of riders receiving eight front slick tyres of two compounds, they now get nine (tyres) of three compounds with a softer compound being introduced.”

“They still get ten rear slick tyres, of two compounds, but these two rear compounds have been made softer and they also get a choice now of the compound split – so five and five, or six of one and four of the other. This is specifically to address the issue of warm-up performance and to answer the requests and comments of riders in the last six months or so.”

The two NTB athletes who managed to proceed to the finals were Rostina in the women`s 100-meter event and Abdul Razak in the men`s 400-meter event, coach Bagus Wiredharma said here Thursday.

"The two athletes are among five from NTB reinforcing the Indonesian team at the Vietnam Open 2011 in Hanoi," Bagus said.

Bagus also hoped the five national athletes from West Nusa Tenggara could show the best performance for Indonesia as the event is considered a warming up for the Sea Games 2011 in Jakarta.

The five athletes from West Nusa Tenggara are among 22 national athletes from different provinces who reinforce the Indonesian team to the Vietnam Open 2011 which is participated in by a number of Southeast Asian countries.

Scorched 3D v42.1

Scorched 3D is a game based loosely (or actually quite heavily now) on the classic DOS game Scorched Earth “The Mother Of All Games”. Scorched 3D adds amongst other new features a 3D island environment and LAN and Internet play. Scorched 3D is totally free and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris, etc.) operating systems. You can pick up the game and begin playing very quickly. Then, when/if you are interested, you can poke in the dimmer recesses of the game and get into the strategy (or just ignore it altogether!).At its lowest level, Scorched 3D is just an artillery game with two+ tanks taking turns to destroy opponents in an arena. Choose the angle, direction and power of each shot, launch your weapon, and try to blow up other tanks. That´s basically it. But Scorched 3D can be a lot more complex than that, if you want it to be. You can earn money from successful battles and use it to invest in additional weapons and accessories. You can play with up to twenty four other players at a time, mixing computer players with humans. There´s a variety of changing environmental conditions and terrains to be dealt with. After the end of each round (which ends when everybody dies or there´s only one person left), you get to buy stuff using the prize money you won from previous matches.

What’s New in version 42.1:
Fixed server web console not displaying Unicode characters correctly
Changed skill formula to have less fluctuations
Added possibility to grant skill based on round/match wins
Added configuration settings for skill system
Fixed unicode names in server web console
Added more tank attributes to LUA tank table
Transient options can be retrieved via the LUA get options function
