Woods has good reason to look ahead in US PGA

CHASKA, Minnesota — Tiger Woods barely had a chance to down a post-round bottle of Gatorade Tiger, and already he was thinking ahead. The weather report for Friday's second round in the U.S. PGA Championship was in, and it was clear Woods liked the idea of strong winds raking Hazeltine Country Club while others try to catch him from behind.

By the weekend he should have his plan to win a gold medal in the 2016 Olympics down, too. Woods will be 40 by the time he gets a shot at Olympic glory, but by then he will have long since been declared the greatest golfer ever and it will give him some incentive to get off his yacht and take on a new challenge.

Most in golf would crown Woods right now, if only he would sit still long enough for the coronation. The things he has done for himself and the sport are staggering, but he's not about to name himself the best until he stands on the 18th green somewhere holding major championship trophy No. 19.

The way he cruised through the opening round of the U.S. PGA on Thursday, that time will not be far away.

Hold off on the engraving on the Wanamaker Trophy just for now. This is Minnesota, after all, so there's always a chance for a tornado or a freak August snowstorm to hit.

Barring that or Woods hitting a sleeve of balls into the Hazeltine Lake, though, No. 15 is in the bag.

Woods himself said so after his seemingly effortless 67 on a monster of a course gave him his first lead after the opening round of a major in four years. Well, maybe he didn't come right out and say it, but it doesn't take much to read between the lines.

'When I'm playing well," Woods said, "I usually don't make that many mistakes."

Hopefully, the other players weren't listening. They usually genuflect when Woods walks by anyway, and it wouldn't look good for them to just up and quit before the tournament reaches the weekend.

Actually, one did. John Daly showed up in wild pants, then played some wild golf before claiming a back injury and heading out of town in his custom RV.

The fact is nobody beats Woods when he gets out in front in a major, and he got out in front in this one so early that they barely had time to show him on television. The margin may only be a stroke over Padraig Harrington, but the message his flawless opening round sent made it seem even bigger.

Woods is statistically a stroke a round better than his nearest challenger even in a year he's been making mistakes — and a lot of them. But he didn't make many while winning his last two tournaments and he didn't on this day, hitting fairway after fairway and green after green on his way to five birdies.

There was none of the wildness that plagued him off the tee at the other three majors this year, none of the frustration that cost him a lost weekend at the British Open.

Just cool, collected golf.

"No big tee shots way right or way left or anything like that," playing partner Rich Beem said. "It was easy."

The huge crowds that lined fairways 10 to 20 deep certainly appreciated the effort. Minnesotans love their golf and anyone who appreciates great talent has to love what Woods has done for the sport.

Those behind golf's inclusion in the Olympics have to be loving him even more. Without Woods' enthusiastic endorsement, it's hard to imagine that the sport would have won a recommendation on Thursday from the International Olympic Committee that all but assured golf a spot in the 2016 Games.

Just why Woods likes the idea is easy to see. As the face of the sport he stands to profit most if the Olympics spurs golf to take off in countries like, shall we say, China. He'll get the endorsement contracts and course design deals that will add even more millions to his already fat bank accounts.

But it's more than the money. Jack Nicklaus and his 18 majors were always the target on Woods' bedroom wall growing up in Southern California, but even as great as Nicklaus was, he never won an Olympic gold.

It's one more thing that will separate Woods from Nicklaus, one more conquest that will keep others behind him from ever matching his feats on the golf course.

Oman still the best in Gulf

Muscat - Oman repeated history and proved the pundits why they are arguably the best team in the region after the Claude Le Roy-coached side once again beat World Cup regulars Saudi Arabia in a spectacular fashion as a pulsating atmosphere at the newly built Sa’ad Stadium in Salalah powered the host to a 2-1 win.

Le Roy had said that a different Oman would be on show and the colourful hordes who filled the 12,000-capacity stadium hours before kickoff got their reward as Oman looked a more powerful team.

Gulf Cup top scorer Hassan Rabe’ea continued his brilliant form to shine for his country. The host completely dominated the game from the start and Le Roy’s boys rightfully followed his “attack, attack” mantra when the athletic Fouzi Bashir, whose extraordinary extendible legs hit a 25-yard strike straight that failed to hit the nets in the 10th minute of first half of play.

Oman missed a couple of chances in the form of Sheeba, Hassan Mudhafar and the star striker Imad Al Hosni.

With the score nil-nil at half-time, Hassan Rabe’ea fired his first goal connected through a pass from Ahmed Hadid in the 46th minute of second half.

The Saudis were seen being more defensive while Omani players kept the match alive. Hassan struck for the second time with a neat header in the 63rd minute of second half and once again it was delicate cross from Ahmed Hadid.

But as the referee signalled for an extra five minutes injury time, Sheeba collided with a Saudi player only to bring a penalty goal in favour of the Saudis. But crowd chanted ‘Habsi, Habsi’ in anticipation of the ever reliable star keeper Ali’s heroics. The optimism was misplaced. Nasser Al Shamrani stepped up and stroked the ball to Habsi’s left — but the Bolton Wanderers couldn’t stop it.

Crowd delighted
But within a minute after that, the referee signalled the final whistle as Al Habsi roared his delight to the crowd, pumping both fists, before crashing chests with a relieved Hashim Saleh.

Staccato cries of ‘Oman’ continued to pulse round the ground, with stands full of white dishdashas mingled with red Oman shirts making an impressive spectacle under the black sky.

The Sultanate side had earlier defeated the Asian giants during the final of the 19th Gulf Cup and it was after seven months the rivals were meeting against each other.

After celebrating on the pitch, coach Le Roy hailed his side’s ‘fantastic’ performance.

“Some of the Saudi media had predicted that Hassan Rabe’ea will not play well today (yesterday) but he proved them all wrong and I am delighted with his performance,” he said during the post match press conference yesterday.

Hassan had four of Oman’s seven goals during the Gulf Cup and later became the highest paid football player in the Middle East.

He went on to praise Al Habsi, and said his team had respected Saudis for 90 minutes despite the score line. “When you have a goalkeeper like Al Habsi you’re always a better coach,” Le Roy said.

“We also have four very good defenders and it won’t be easy for any team to beat us. But it is only one game,” said the sharp-suited French extrovert. “I want my players always to attack and attack.”

“But we also respected the Saudi team and played very seriously right until the end. So I like both the performance and the behaviour of my players,” he said.

“Saudi Arabian football was not new to me,” he roared in response to one question.

“I led my Cameroon side against Saudi in the Afro-Asian cup back in 1985. Then my own boys beat them in the Gulf Cup. We had prepared in a better way this time,” he said with a big smile.

Home advantage

Saudi coach Jose Peseiro congratulated the Omanis and praised Le Roy for his tactics while admitting that his side took the ‘red-warriors’ for granted.

“They were simply superb and once again shown why they are the best in this region. The crowd advantage was another factor which supported them. To be frank we were outplayed completely by a far superior side,” said the former assistant coach of Real Madrid.

Oman’s Ahmed Hadid and Saudis Naif Hazzazi were declared the best players. Le Roy’s boys will next host South Korea this month and then will fly to Qatar for a friendly before heading to Australia for the Asia Cup qualification round in October.

Indonesian Thomas Cup team expects to repeat 2000 success

Kuala Lumpur - The Indonesian Thomas Cup team is hoping it would be able to repeat its success in 2000 when it meets China in the final of the group badminton championship on Sunday.

However, one of the players who contributed to the 2000 success, Taufik Hidayat, said that the situation now was different compared to 2000 when the country had a lot of players to choose.

"At the time we were a little better than China and had many players to choose to play in the single or double events. Right now or since 2004 the single players have always been me, Sony and Simon," he said.

Taufik who is ranked fifth in the world said the situation now was the opposite of that of 2000 because China had a lot of choices.

For the final on Sunday Indonesia would likely field the same players it fielded in the semifinal due to a question of Sony`s fitness.

Coach Agus Dwi Santoso however said it was still a day away to monitor the developement of the physical condition of Sony who had been put to rest since the quarterfinals due to injury.

If Indonesia finally fielded its semifinal team Simon who lost against Sho Sasaki from Japan would again be played as a second player.

Taufik Hidayat meanwhile is expected to be a point opener for the team.

Regarding the role he said "the pressure as a determining player or an opener is the same. If he could play well and make a point it will give a positive effect to the whole team but on the contrary if he plays badly the burden will be heavier considering how the next players would perform."

Taufik however promised he would not consider the pressure as a burden that would affect his performance.

As the first single he would likely meet Beijing Olympic champion Lin Dan.

Although he has always lost against him he hoped he could repeat his success in beating the world`s second-ranked player in some big tournaments.

"In several big tournaments I could win. Hopefully I could do it again this time. Or if I have to lose I hope it will not be easy to achieve," he said after training with other team members.

Taufik defeated Lin Dan twice namely in the final of the World Championship in 2005 and the Asian Games in 2006.

Lin Dan however had won in five of the last meetings with the recent one in the French Open in 2009.

Regarding the double event coach Sigit Pamungkas said that in the final round the most important thing was not technical and physical capability but mental readiness.

"Although technically and phyisically they are good they would not be able to play well if their mental readiness is not good," he said.

In view of that he would ask the six double players about their readiness.

Based on records Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan would likely be fielded as the first double players to meet against Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun.

For the second double players Indonesia has Nova Widianto, Alvent Yulianto and Hendra Aprida Gunawan to choose.

Mighty Brazil arrive in South Africa for World Cup

Johannesburg - Brazil arrived in Johannesburg Thursday to embark on a journey they hope will take them to a record sixth World Cup title.

Usually hot pre-tournament favourites wherever the quadrennial international football showcase is staged, Brazil have been downgraded by many bookmakers to second spot behind European champions Spain.

A crisp, clear dawn in the South African economic hub greeted the South Americans, who flew from Brasilia having been given an official send-off by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Landing 12 hours after the Australian `Socceroos` became the first qualifiers to reach South Africa, Brazil followed the same procedure of restricted assess to select TV crews and photographers and no interviews.

The 23-man squad, coaches and officials boarded a brightly coloured luxury coach for a journey to a hotel in a northern suburb golf course and the five-time world champions plan to train at a nearby school.

Brazil are with 2006 semi-finalists Portugal, Didier Drogba-led Ivory Coast and tournament outsiders North Korea in Group G, labelled the `Group of Death` after the Cape Town draw last December because of its strength.

And should a Brazilian squad boasting stars like Julio Cesar, Maicon, Kaka and Luis Fabiano match expectations and top the mini-league table, they could face fellow South American qualifiers Chile in the knockout second round.

The South Americans are no strangers to Johannesburg having won the World Cup dress-rehearsal Confederations Cup tournament there last June after wiping out a two-goal deficit against surprise finalists United States.

Coach Dunga, captain and midfield `enforcer` in the 1994 World Cup-winning team, must hope he can banish the hoodoo that envelopes Confederations Cup title holders in the subsequent World Cup.

The curse has struck Brazil twice as they finished 1998 World Cup runners-up to Zinedine Zidane-inspired hosts France, and fell to `Les Bleus` again four years ago, this time in the quarter-finals.

No country is more passionate about football than Brazil and banks have been cleared to close when the national team faces North Korea on June 15, Ivory Coast five days later and Portugal a further five days into the tournament.

Dunga was handed one of the most stressful posts in football four years ago despite no managerial experience after Carlos Alberto Parreira paid the price for the last-eight exit.
He will be under intense scrutiny in South Africa, not least for refusing to include 2002 World Cup winner Ronaldinho in his squad after the AC Milan midfielder showed a revival in form.

Adriano, Alexandre Pato, Neymar and Paulo Ganso were other controversial omissions and knives will glisten in the South African sun if Brazil do not clutch the World Cup trophy and the 30-million-dollar cheque.

The first World Cup hosted by Africa kicks off on June 11 at the 90,000-seat Soccer City near the black township of Soweto with Parreira-coached South Africa facing Mexico and finishes with the July 11 final at the same venue. (Uu.S022/P003)

Federer faces Swiss pal Wawrinka at French Open

Roger Federer has been an adviser, friend and Olympic doubles partner for fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

Now, for the first time, Federer will be Wawrinka's Grand Slam opponent. They'll meet Sunday in the fourth round of the French Open.

"He's really a good friend," Wawrinka said. "We know each other so well, so it's never easy to play him, especially here in French Open. But then when you go on court, you try to do your job."

Wawrinka has reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros for the first time. With one more victory, he would earn his first berth in a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

A win would also end Federer's record streak of reaching the semifinals in 23 consecutive major tournaments.

"All streaks come to an end," Wawrinka said. "Sooner or later in his career, he will lose before the semifinals. But writing history, that is not my main objective."

Seeded 20th, Wawrinka earned a chance to play Federer by beating Fabio Fognini on Friday, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1. Federer beat qualifier Julian Reister 6-4, 6-0, 6-4.

Also advancing were Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova and Venus and Serena Williams. Most of tennis' top players were in action because of a schedule backlog caused by rain earlier in the week.

Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was beaten by fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The No. 6-seeded Kuznetsova, who saved four match points in the second round, will fall out of the top 10 for the first time in four years.

"You cannot play all the time great,' Kuznetsova said. "It's up ands downs. I have not been playing well this clay-court season and this season, but it happens, you know. I'll be back. I have the game. It's fine. It's just matters of time."

Federer has yet to drop a set, but then so has Wawrinka, who considers clay his best surface. Federe is 4-1 in the friendly rivalry and easily won their most recent meeting in Madrid two weeks ago, but Wawrinka won at the Monte Carlo Masters on clay last year.

They'll face each other on a Grand Slam stage for the first time. They first met for a practice session when Wawrinka was 16 and Federer was alreay in the top 10.

"We played for two hours," Wawrinka said. "It was very tough. I was very nervous to begin with, but I had a lot of fun."

Federer has since built an unrivaled resume, with a record 16 major titles and - thanks to last year's victory at the French Open - a career Grand Slam. He has lso provided informal counsel to Wawrinka, Switzerland's second-best player.

"I'm not his coach, but at the beginning it's like giving tips and advice," Federer said. "I saw him growing. It's always very interesting to see how he can continue and make progress. He's no longer asking for tips, which is agood sign."

They've been doubles partners for the Swiss Davis Cup and Olympic teams, and they won together at Beijing in 2008.

"It's probably the best memory of my life," Wawrinka said. "Tennis is such an individual sport that you can hardly ever share something with somebody. And being able to she this victory with Roger on the courts was beautiful. Because of him, I have a gold medal in my house, so I'm very happy for that."

Wawrinka will be the toughest test so far in this year's French Open for Federer, whose first three opponents were ranked 71st, 70th and 165th.

"I haven't played top guys yet, but dangerous players who are skillful on this surface," Federer said. "With my own form, I'm very happy."

Wawrinka knows what he's up against.

"The greatest player ever," he said.

Red Bull's Webber takes pole for Turkish GP

Red Bull maintained its perfect qualifying record on Saturday as Mark Webber edged Lewis Hamilton of McLaren to start the Turkish Grand Prix from pole position.

It is Webber's third straight pole as the overall Formula One leader goes for a third consecutive race victory. Red Bull has taken pole in all seven races this season.

Webber set a new qualifying record with a lap of 1 minute, 26.295 seconds around the Istanbul Park Circuit to lead Hamilton by less than two-tenths of a second.

Sebastian Vettel starts third after locking up his Red Bull during his final flying lap. Defending champion Jenson Button of McLaren completes the second row.

Fernando Alonso, Red Bull's closest competitor in the drivers' standings, starts 12th for Ferrari.

4 Events Proposed for 2011 SEA Games

Atraditional Japanese martial art, an extreme sport and a card game are among the disciplines local sports officials will propose to be added to the Southeast Asian Games, which the country hosts next year.

Looking to increase the country’s chances of securing the overall title, the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) plans to include kempo, wall climbing, roller skating and bridge for the regional tournament.

KOI officials will discuss the matter during the SEA Games Council meeting in Jakarta from Friday to Monday.

“We believe the country has a good chance of winning medals in those events, and that will help us to reach our overall target,” Indra Kartasasmita, a KOI board member, said on Wednesday.

Indonesia emerged as the overall champion during the 2009 World Kempo Championship in Bali in July, winning six gold medals, eight silver and eight bronze. Japan, the sport’s birthplace, ended up second with as many gold medals, but only four silver and one bronze.

If kempo makes it to the SEA Games roster, the Indonesian Kempo Association (Perkemi) said Malaysia and Timor Leste would likely challenge for medals.

The Indonesian Wall Climbing Federation (FPTI) said it was ready to field a lineup that could win five of the 10 events KOI planned to propose.

“I think we’re strong in the speed categories for both the men’s and women’s sides, namely track, record and relay,” FPTI official Hendrikus Muter said.

One climber who could make it to the national team is Yulianto Abu Dzar. He finished second to Russian Sergey Sinitsyn in men’s speed climbing at the 2009 Asian X-Games in China.

According to Hendrikus, wall climbing has a good chance of being approved for the SEA Games because five other national federations, including those in Singapore and the Philippines, were interested in backing KOI’s bid.

The committee has already dropped petanque and shuttlecock from the 2011 event.

Besides the roster of sports, the council will also discuss the preparations for the venues in Palembang, South Sumatra; Bandung, West Java; Semarang, Central Java; and DKI Jakarta.

“We will also decide on the schedule of the events, and details concerning the opening and closing ceremonies,” Indra said.

Indonesia last hosted the SEA Games in 1997, the last time the country won the overall championship. The 194 gold medals it won that year is the Games record. (Ami Afriatni)

Old-Timer Kimiko Knocks Safina Off the Court

Paris - Kimiko Date Krumm became the second-oldest woman to win a match at Roland Garros on Tuesday, after the 39-year-old Japanese player defeated former No. 1 Dinara Safina 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the opening round.

Date Krumm, who came out of a 12-year retirement in 2008, is about a year older than Billie Jean King when she won in 1982.

Virginia Wade was about two and a half months older than Date Krumm when she won a match at Roland Garros in 1985.

“I’m really happy. I tried my best,” Date Krumm said after the French crowd gave her a standing ovation. “I don’t like so much the red clay, but today I beat Safina, so it will be great memories again.”

Date Krumm is playing in the main draw of the clay-court Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 1996. She made her Grand Slam debut here in 1989, when Safina was only 3 years old.

Playing with her right calf taped, Date Krumm committed 63 unforced errors but compensated with 38 winners.

She said she was on the verge of forfeiting the match.

“I don’t like to retire. Losing is a much better feeling,” Date Krumm said. “But my feeling was I shouldn’t stop and then she started to get a bit nervous, and then to make easy mistakes.”

Date Krumm said she didn’t pick up a racket during the first two years of her retirement.

She then started to work on her fitness and ran the London Marathon in 2004. She also worked for Japanese TV as a commentator during the Grand Slam events and built a school in Laos with her husband, German race car driver Michael Krumm.

Date Krumm, whose best result at the French Open was a semifinal in 1995, said it was her husband who persuaded her to return to competitive tennis.

“He kept asking me: ‘Why don’t you play tennis one more time? This is just for fun, not serious.’ And he wanted to see me play, because when I met him I was already retired,” she said. “So he pushed me, then I had an exhibition match with Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova in Japan.”

Date Krumm, who became the first Japanese player to enter the top 10 in 1994, returned on the tour in May 2008. Her win against Safina was her first over a top-10 player in 14 years.

“When I came back, I never thought about playing a Grand Slam again,” Date Krumm said. “I have great memories here.”

In 1995, the year she reached the semifinals at Roland Garros, Date Krumm beat Lindsay Davenport and Iva Majoli before losing to Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

Date Krumm will need to undergo scans before she knows if she can play in the next round.

“I’m not a 20-year old player anymore,” she said. “But hopefully I will go on.”

Safina, who was the runner-up at Roland Garros in 2008 and 2009, has been hampered by a nagging back injury this season and her preparation for the French Open had not gone well. She lost both her opening matches in Rome and Madrid.

She served 17 double faults against Date Krumm and later blamed back problems for the day’s poor performance.

“I couldn’t work on my serve until I came here, basically,” Safina said. “And the other part is that, I first thought I was doing pretty good but then I lost the motion and I started to serve more double faults.”

Date Krumm called a trainer three times to receive treatment on her calf before handing Safina her first loss in the opening round of a Grand Slam tournament since the 2008 Australian Open.

“First set, I was pretty dominant. Second set, I was up a break. Third set, I was up 4-1 with a double break,” Safina said. “I should have closed it in two sets.” (Samuel Petrequin)

Police Worries Spoil Jakarta Derby

By Wimbo Satwiko

Even with supporters from across the capital agreeing to play nice, Jakarta Police will not be swayed.

Persitara North Jakarta match organizers confirmed on Thurday that this season’s second capital derby will be played behind closed doors. Persitara is set to host rival Persija Jakarta at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The first derby also took place in an empty stadium, with Persija winning 3-0 on Jan. 20.

“We met directly with Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Wahyono on Wednesday. He told us Jakarta Police would only give a closed match permit and the match must be played at Gelora Bung Karno stadium,” Persitara organizing chairman Fachri Sinaga said.

“We’ve already worked together with both Persija’s fans, Jakmania, and Persitara’s fans, NJ Mania, and we presented our security concept to the police.

“Still, we’re not allowed to play with spectators as the police are still worried that both fan clubs can’t behave themselves.”
Persitara plays its Super League home matches at Soemantri Brodjonegoro Stadium in Kuningan, but Fachri said police did not deem it fit to host the derby.

The match was originally scheduled for March 7, but police also wanted that match played behind closed doors. Persitara asked league administrator PT Liga Indonesia to reschedule it so organizers would have more time to convince police to allow spectators.

Not only did that plan fail, the move to Gelora Bung Karno is an expensive one. The stadium’s rental fee is Rp 100 million ($11,000) with a Rp 300 million bank guarantee, which organizers will reclaim if the stadium is undamaged. In contrast, Soemantri Brodjonegoro’s rental fee is Rp 30 million with no bank guarantee.

“Now we’re counting our losses as Gelora Bung Karno stadium’s rent is very high. I hope all football stakeholders in Jakarta can take a lesson from this experience,” Fachri said.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said fans should learn from being denied their derby experience.

“Both Jakmania and NJ Mania have to contemplate why the police didn’t issue a full permit,” he said, declining to elaborate.

Authorities have reason to be concerned. In the last two months, police confiscated weapons from fans prior to Persija home matches. Before a March 26 match, 15 Persija fans were detained for weapons possession before being released because they were younger than 18.

Six Persitara fans were arrested on their way to a March 3 match for throwing stones as President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s car as it passed by their bus.

Police have also refused to issue permits for matches on the same day in Jakarta. The PTLI has rescheduled Persija and Persitara’s last league matches, with Persitara vs. Persijap Jepara moved up one day to May 29 while Persija vs. Arema Malang will still take place on May 30.

On the field, Pelita Jaya came from two goals down to beat visiting Sriwijaya FC 3-2 on Thursday. Richard Obiora and Pavel Solomin gave Sriwijaya a 2-0 halftime lead. Supardi pulled a goal back in the 62nd and Redouane Barkaoui equalized in the 65th. Marwan Sayedeh hit the winner in the 73rd minute to keep alive 17th-place Pelita’s hopes of survival.

Yamaha Teammates Lorenzo, Rossi on Fast Track to Le Mans Bragging Rights

Le Mans, France - Yamaha teammates Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi continue their battle for MotoGP supremacy in the third leg of the 2010 season at Le Mans on Sunday.

Lorenzo approaches the French Grand Prix in pole position, the Spaniard’s win in Jerez last time out giving him a four-point lead in the riders’ standings after Rossi took the opening race in Qatar.

Lorenzo, who came out tops in difficult conditions in Le Mans 12 months ago, said: “Last year I won in Le Mans in an amazing and crazy race.

“I hope the fans aren’t waiting for a repeat this weekend!”

In an interview with the sport’s official Web site, motogp.com, he added: “Of course the weather is always a risk in Le Mans, but I hope for sun.

“I’ve been on the podium twice there, last season and when I won my second 250cc title, so I am looking forward to trying again. I’ve had almost three weeks since Jerez and I know that I am ready for this second European race.”

He refused to accept the tag of favorite, saying: “Despite our victory in Jerez and taking the lead in the world standings, I continue to think that I am not the favorite because the season is very long and it has only just started.”

Rossi had a race to forget in Le Mans last season, the world champion trailing in 16th, but his overall form at the historic French venue is excellent, with three MotoGP victories here.

He is feeling bullish after recovering from an injury sustained in a training accident.

“My shoulder is more or less recovered now, so I hope I will be back to full strength in Le Mans,” Rossi said. “Despite the disaster of last year’s race, Le Mans is a good track for me and Yamaha always goes well there. The biggest problem is the weather, but after last year, I think we deserve a sunny French GP.”

Rossi added: “We’ve made a good start to the season, with the win in Qatar and then another podium, but we have also struggled with the bike in some areas, so we need to try to improve our performance. We had a good test after Jerez, so I hope that we will be able to use that information to start strongly here.”

Ferrari Buries Fallen Soldier

By Ernesto Nigro

It has come to light that Alsono’s chassis that fell victim to the unforgiving Armco at Massenet on Saturday morning’s Free Practice session has been deemed unfit to continue on it’s tour of duty.

While most of you already know the story, Alonso was left to be nothing more than a spectator for last Saturday’s qualifying round in Monaco due to the accident that destroyed his car. Starting from the pit lane in a car that was just a chassis in a box and had never even seen daylight or turned a wheel before that morning, he was able to bring it home on Sunday in 6th.

It was originally thought by Ferrari that they might be able to repair the wounded F10. Further investigations however made it evident that Chassis 283 was non-repairable and thus has been laid to rest.

A moment of silence please for our fallen troop…

This turn of events brings to light the importance of the return of the spare car for any team serious about winning a championship. There is currently a ban on spare cars as you may know. Many rules have been changed in the name of cost cutting that have diminished the quality of the sport in many ways and the ability for teams to compete at the highest level. As we have seen, these changes have done nothing to curb spending as teams are forced to dump heaps of money and already reduced resources into other areas that have thus been fruitless. KERS was introduced as an “OPTION”. While teams such as Ferrari and McLaren spent millions developing the technology, others did not and eventually it was agreed that KERS was not to be used for this season. Others had instead developed DD-Diffusers which in turn saw many teams spend millions in car redesign and wind tunnel testing. In turn the whole of F1 has suffered, teams, drivers and fans.

Engine development was frozen, in-season testing was banned, pre-season testing was limited and other crucial areas that have helped propel the sport to elitism were all limited, restricted or removed.

Teams however, have either found new ways to spend money or were forced to spend it chasing innovative systems or technology which have either been banned or will be (Diffusers, F-Duct, etc…)

Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali explains his view on the spare car rule:

“Let’s start from the reasons why the rule book was modified a couple years ago: costs had to be reduced by getting rid of the T-car and reducing car crews,” said Domenicali. “This was the reason why the regulations were changed.

“After that, as usually happens in F1, we lost sight a bit of the events that may happen, like on Saturday. So I think this is an issue that will be re-discussed again as soon as possible, because preventing spectators from seeing the car for this sort of reason is in my opinion worth looking at.”

Personal View:
The bottom line is really that any efforts to curb spending in F1 only seem to propel teams towards spending the same money in different ways in an effort to gain the slightest advantage over their competitors.

If money is not being spent on things such as KERS, F-Duct, DD-Diffusers etc… it’s spent on luxury mobile palaces. Has anyone seen the pictures of two and three level Motorhome complexes that sport terraces and pools?

Therefore, perhaps the FIA should review some of these rules and help the teams bring the sport back to the top where it belongs. Profit sharing to help smaller teams to allow them to test more is one idea, but getting everyone to buy into that idea is easier said than done.

Lifting the ban on engine development and removing the rev limit to allow teams to really exploit the engine and reduce (what some may claim to be unsafe) cornering speeds be removing the Diffusers and returning to mechanical grip over aero grip will bring racing back to the forefront.

Simple changes that will allow cars to follow closer which will promote overtaking, and smart spending on things like testing, may be the easiest way to fix some of the problems experienced today in F1.

But what do I know? I’m just a fan that is tired of band-aid fixes and changes for sensationalism’s sake.

Luca Montezemolo test drives Ferrari F10

Sure! Ferrari’s qualifying performance at the Spanish Grand Prix at circuit de Catalunya was not what Ferrari or the fans expected. But was it bad enough for Ferrari F1 supremo, Luca de Montezemolo to take matters into his own hands?

Luca de Montezemolo is not short of drivers under contract who can take a Ferrari around a circuit. With Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella, Luca Badoer, Marc Gené and newest addition Jules Bianchi all ready to make that happen.

The Ferrari boss however took matters into his own hands by taking to the virtual Catalunya circuit in Ferrari’s newest (and considered the industry’s best) Formula 1 simulator in Maranello.

Present with Luca, was Ferrari test driver Marc Gene who was said to have given Montezemolo pointers on how to eek out a few extra tenths around the Spanish track.
montezemolo-beaches-ferrari-california-at-own-world-final

No times however were revealed, but as long as Monte didn’t put another Ferrari in the sand trap like he did at the Ferrari World Finals in Spain earlier this year, we’re all for it!!!

Ferrari are on an “aggressive” F10 car development plan, but seeing Luca in the simulator brings up scenes from Star Wars where Darth Vader informs his general that “the emperor will personally oversee the construction of the death star” (in this case Ferrari F10) comes to mind.

Forza Ferrari!

Liverpool Legend Ian Rush Set To Hold Football Clinic in Jakarta

Since retiring nearly a decade ago as one of the English game’s top strikers, Welsh football legend Ian Rush has taken it upon himself to spread his knowledge of the game to young players.

Over the weekend, kids in Jakarta will have a chance to learn first-hand tips from the Hall of Fame footballer during a series of programs supported by the British Chamber of Commerce.

Rush, who will be in Jakarta on Saturday and Sunday, will hold coaching clinics and take part in activities under the British Chamber of Commerce’s “Giving Kids a Sporting Chance” community program.

Around 300 kids from the ages of 7 to 10 are expected to attend the event, which will also benefit a number of causes, including environmental projects and children’s education.

The event will also feature teams from the BritCham/Mama Sayang football league and street children from the KDM Green Project.

KDM is a nongovernmental organization that collects and recycles materials from the British Embassy and uses the funds to support and educate children.

Over the last six months, more than 1,500 children have been part of the “Giving Kids a Sporting Chance” program, with BritCham arranging for nearly all of the kids to attend this season’s closing event at Soemantri Brojonegoro Stadium, Jakarta, on Saturday.

Rush’s appearance is a joint initiative involving BritCham and Permata Bank.

“Apart from giving kids a special memory, our goal is to make sure that Ian goes back to [the United Kingdom] and tells everyone what a great and happening place Indonesia is,” BritCham executive director Chris Wren said in a statement.

One of the Premier League’s top strikers during the 1980s and ’90s, Rush will forever be linked to Liverpool, where he had two stints from 1980-87 and 1988-96. He also had spells at seven other clubs, including a season with Italian club Juventus in 1987-88.

As a member of the Wales national team, Rush earned 73 caps and scored 28 goals.

He last saw action for Sydney Olympic in the Australian League before he retired in 2000. In 2006, Rush was inducted to the English Football Hall of Fame.

Drogba Factor Gives Chelsea the Edge in Final

London - Didier Drogba’s knack for scoring goals at Wembley and against Portsmouth are two of the reasons why Chelsea is an overwhelming favorite to finish the season with its first-ever league and FA Cup double.

After clinching the Engliaag Premier League title with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Wigan last weekend, when Drogba scored three times to earn the golden boot as the competition’s top scorer, Chelsea has all the ingredients to make Saturday’s Cup final against Portsmouth a one-sided affair.

Relegated from the Premier League as a last-place finisher and deep in financial trouble, Portsmouth is hoping to follow up its surprise semifinal victory over Tottenham with an even bigger shock at Wembley.

But Chelsea has the Drogba factor and the 32-year-old Ivory Coast striker is hungry to add to his five goals at the home of English football and six in games against Portsmouth.

“That pitch brings me a lot of luck,” Drogba said on Thursday. “It is something we really want to achieve, it won’t be easy because Portsmouth have been focused and it will be a happy ending for them after their season, but this next week is so important for us.”

Drogba has been at Chelsea for six seasons, helping the team win three league titles as well as two FA Cups and two League Cups.

“This is the best season of my career,” he said. “My third season here I scored 33 goals, and 20 goals in the league, this one I scored 29 in the league.”

With Drogba’s scoring success and Chelsea’s emphatic last game triumph to capture the league title, it all points to an easy victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s team as the former AC Milan coach chases the double triumph in his first season in English football.

There was a scare when John Terry left Wednesday’s training session with his right foot in a protective boot, prompting fears he had broken a bone. But he said that was just a precaution and the Chelsea captain was back in training on Thursday.

Portsmouth now has former Chelsea manager Avram Grant in charge and, although the Israeli was unable to keep the team in the Premier League, he has the chance to beat the club he guided to the Champions League final in 2008.

“Avram’s been great since he’s been here,” Portsmouth midfielder Hayden Mullins said.

“He’s a brilliant coach and a good motivator. Hopefully he can come up with a trick that will stifle Chelsea.”

Mullins said Portsmouth could use its underdog status to pull off the latest Cup final surprise in the long history of the competition, after beating Tottenham 2-0 in the semifinals.

“There’s no pressure on us. The pressure’s on Chelsea,” he said. “The longer we keep them quiet, the more the pressure mounts.”

Indonesia`s second single player Adriyanti Firdasari who played in the third round failed to win the match against Chinese Wang Xin 17-21, 13-21.

The two in turn scored points in the first set until a 13-13 draw before Firdasari could surpass to 16-13 and then 17-15. The Chinese who is ranked second in the world and the champion of the Malaysia Super Series 2010 however could later force Firdasari to a 17-17 draw to later conclude the match 21-17.

In the second set Firdasari was unable to maintain her play and had to lose in point collection. The game was finally over 17-15 for the Chinese after Firdasari failed to put her return inside the court.

Earlier Indonesian Maria Febe Kusumastuti was beaten by Wang Yihan, who is ranked first in the world 7-21 and 12-21.

Indonesian pair Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari meanwhile were defeated by Ma Jin and Wang Xiaoli 17-21 and 13-21.

Indonesian Uber Cup team manager Djendjen Djaenanasari admitted that it would be very difficult to defeat the Chinese team that had championed the tournament for the past six events.

"With regard to their performance however I was quite unsatisfied particular that of the first single player and the first double players. I think they have not played freely and maximally," he said.

"Only Firdasari that had demonstrated her maximal effort. She has given the best of her capability," he said.
He said the first single and double players might have felt burdened so that they could not perform maximally.

"The first double players should have been able to give better fight but they have not so that they lost the game more easily than expected," he said.

Regarding Maria he admitted that the player as young as she would not as yet be ready to saddle the heavy burden of becoming the first player in such a big tournament.

"On the positive side, she now has had a better capital to play in the next Uber Cup," he said.

Chinese team manager Li Yongbo said the Indonesia team had played well and shown improvement and he was glad his team went to the finals to meet the South Korean team for the sixth time now.

Against the Korean team which has never won the Uber Cup tournament he said he predicted the match would be quite tough but believed the results would be like in the previous matches.

"China will beat them for the sixth time," he said. The finals will take place on Saturday at 2pm local time.

Indonesia advances to Thomas Cup finals

Kuala Lumpur - Indonesia for the first time since 2002 reached the final round of the Thomas Cup group badminton championship here on Friday after beating Japan in the semifinals 3-1.

"I am glad the Indonesian team could win and go to the final," team manager Yacob Rusdianto said after the semifinal match.

The final at Bukit Jalil on Sunday would be the first for Indonesia since 2002 when the country last won the Thomas Cup to be the fifth champion in a row.

After that Indonesia has always been defeated in the semifinals. In the final on Sunday Indonesia will meet the winner of the match between Malaysia and defending champion China.

Asked which of the two teams will benefit Indonesia Yacob said the two teams had their own superiority. "China may be considered having players with equal strength for all matches and we will be the underdog and so we would play without any burden," he said.

About the Malaysian team he said that its strength was actually equal that of the country so the chance for the country`s team to win is wide open.

Nova Widianto and Alvent Yulianto were the ones determining the Indonesian victory against Japan in the semifinal beating Noriyasu Hirata and Hiroyuki Endo 21-14, 22-20 in the double`s event.

The two other victories for Indonesia meanwhile were made by single player Taufik Hidayat who defeated Kenichi Tago 21-9, 21-14 and Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan who won over Kenichi Hayakawa/Kenta Kazuno 21-9, 21-11.

Taufik said his performance got better and better. "I hope I could continue to be able to give the best of me," the Olympic champion in Athens said.

Indonesian Simon Santoso was beaten by Sho Sasaki 21-19, 13-21 and 11-21. (H-YH/HAJM/S012/P003)

Dani Pedrosa wins Misano race

Dani Pedrosa transformed fantastic form from practice sessions to dominant race victory, never letting his rivals to even get close. This was the first time for Spanish rider to take back-to-back victories in MotoGP class, but according to his form, certainly not the last. Jorge Lorenzo gathered more valuable championship points by taking second place, never being able to challenge Pedrosa for victory, but also never being challenged for second position. Valentino Rossi returned to podium for his home race, managing to defend last podium step from charging Andrea Dovizioso.

Dovizioso was strong through the race, constantly riding behind Rossi in 4th place, but eventually not being able to make attack and get to podium. Casey Stoner, who was third in opening laps of the race, lost his speed as race progressed and finished in dissappointing 5th place. Ben Spies recovered from start which saw him ending in 10th place in lap 1, finishing race in 6th place. Colin Edwards finished race in 7th place, right behind his team-mate.

Alvaro Bautista brought 8th place to Suzuki in hard fought mid-field battle, while his team-mate Capirossi was taken out from the track in lap 1 by Nicky Hayden. Hector Barbera took respectable 9th place after fighting with Marco Melandri, who completed top 10 finishers in Misano.

Barca players hoping for Real slip up

Barcelona’s Victor Valdes and Bojan Krkic said they are playing the waiting game after the Catalans put themselves four points clear of rivals Real Madrid with a 4-1 win over Tenerife on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi put Barca ahead on 17 minutes and added a second in the final minute.

Argentine Roman Martinez stunned the champions by equalising for Tenerife shortly before half-time following an error from home captain Carles Puyol.

But second-half goals from Bojan Krkic (in the 63rd minute) and substitute Pedro Rodriguez (77) turned the game in Barca’s favour before Messi rubbed salt in the wound with his late strike.

Now the Blaugrana are waiting to see how Real do away to Mallorca tonight, knowing that should los Merengues slip up, they would step closer to a second consecutive title.

“It was a tough day with the weather, and the busy calendar is really weighing on us now but we have given everything. It’s a very competitive league and we won and now have to wait,” Valdes told AS after the match.

Bojan said he was happy with the win and revealed he will be watching tonight’s game at the ONO Estadi, hoping Real drop points.

“I’m happy with how things are going, there are only two games left and we’re getting what we want. It is important that the fans are supporting us as always. They, like us, are eager to win the title. Their help is essential,” Bojan said.

“It was important to win today, Real are a great team with great players and have a difficult game tomorrow. We hope they drop some points.

“Yes I will be watching Madrid, I will be having a meal for the game.”

Mourinho finally lets out some joy

Jose Mourinho still doesn't love Italian football but his relationship with Inter Milan and its supporters could hardly be better.

Mourinho jumped up and down and ran out to the middle of the pitch to celebrate when Inter advanced to the Champions League final despite a 1-0 loss at Barcelona on Wednesday.

The self-appointed 'Special One' then pointed his finger up at Inter's fans in the stands at the Camp Nou.

"I thought I had reached the height of emotion with Chelsea's fans, but Inter's supporters are even better," Mourinho said. "I'm in love with Inter and these fans, not Italian football - I respect it, but I don't love it."

Mourinho, who said qualifying Inter for the Champions League final was the greatest moment of his career, has been at odds with the local media and opposing coaches since arriving at the Milan club two years ago.

To avoid suspensions, he no longer addresses the media except before and after European matches - in accordance with UEFA requirements.

Last year, he had an exchange of words with Catania director Pietro Lo Monaco and then Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri, and he was recently fined 40,000 Euros ($53,000) and banned from sitting on the bench for three games after he made a handcuff gesture when two of his players were sent off during a Serie A match against Sampdoria.

He was sent to the stands during Inter's match at Cagliari earlier this season and received a one-game ban.

"It's nice to see him showing some joy," Inter president Massimo Moratti said. "A large part of this is due to him. He brought us here, now let's see how he finishes it."

Moratti has been on a personal mission for the European crown since taking over Inter in 1995. The club hasn't won the competition since back-to-back victories in 1964 and 1965, when Moratti's father Angelo was the president.

The wait has been even tougher in recent years when city rival AC Milan dominated Europe, with two victories and three finals between 2003 and 2007.

Moratti compared Mourinho to Inter's coach in the 1960s - the Argentine Helenio Herrera.

"There's 40 years between them but they're very similar," Moratti said. "Both great workers, both very finicky but also professional. And they both show a lot of charisma toward the players.

"I've got to thank Mourinho because he reminds me of when I was young," Moratti added, recalling how he used to attend games at the San Siro with his father.

Mourinho guided FC Porto to the Champions League title in 2004, and only two coaches have won the European Cup with two different clubs: Ernst Happel with Feyenoord in 1970 and Hamburg in 1983, and Ottmar Hitzfeld with Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and Bayern Munich in 2001.

Mourinho also won two league titles in England with Chelsea but said getting Inter to this season's Champions League final is the pinnacle for him.

"It's the greatest moment of my career, better than my first league victory, better than the Champions League I won with Porto," he said.

Inter will face Bayern Munich in the May 22 final in Madrid and the German club's coach, Louis van Gaal, has already won the Champions League - with Ajax in 1995.

"He's a top coach and Bayern's a top club," Mourinho said. "Bayern is an example to many clubs. Because the team didn't start well, Louis was in a difficult situation but the club kept confidence in him and left him to work and he's in the Champions League final."

In the final, Inter will be without midfielder Thiago Motta, who was sent off against Barcelona, although Dejan Stankovic will be back from suspension. Bayern will be missing France winger Franck Ribery, who is also banned.

"It's a pity Motta and Ribery cannot play the final," Mourinho said.

Win or lose against Bayern, Mourinho is expecting more European exploits for Inter in the near future.

"This isn't a team of kids that is going to have to wait another 15 years to reach the final," he said. "These players will be remembered as the heroes of Barcelona, even by their grandchildren."
