The year 2009 marks another flop year for Indonesian sports. We are losing grip on the regional competition of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Laotian capital Vientiane. We are no longer a powerhouse in badminton, with only five titles collected from 10 Super Series tournaments. Forget soccer! We haven’t won international tournaments in decades, and this year is no exception.

The most recent performance at the SEA Games only confirms that Indonesia is moving backward in developing sports compared to our neighbors. Eyeing a third-place finish, the country — which dominated the biennial event from 1977 to 1997, except in 1985 and 1995 — finished fifth after regional powerhouse Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.

While the four countries above garnered most of their gold medals from the swimming pool, the track or the shooting range, Indonesia failed to focus on those Olympics sports that always offer the most medals.

The woeful result will force new sports minister Andi Alfian Mallarangeng to consolidate better with the whole sports community, especially with the National Sports Council (KONI), to prepare a better team for next year’s Asian Games and more importantly to groom younger talents for the 2011 SEA Games that Indonesia will host.

On the badminton court, Indonesia’s shuttlers have been losing their domination to China, Malaysia and Denmark. Simon Santoso was the country’s sole men’s singles player to win a title in the Super Series, with victory at the Denmark Open in October. Olympics gold medalists Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan could only grabbed two men’s doubles titles at the French Open and Japan Open, while Olympics silver medalists Nova Widianto and Lilyana Natsir also collected two mixed doubles titles at the French Open and Malaysia Open.

In the Sudirman Cup mixed team championship, Indonesia had to bow out to South Korea in the semifinal. Defending champion China eventually whitewashed South Korea 3-0 in the final to bring home the coveted trophy, adding to the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup they had picked up earlier.

As for the national soccer team, many have given up hope that it will excel even at the regional level. The facts spoke for themselves. A defeat to host Laos at the SEA Games only added to the long list of defeats this year, which also included a humiliating 7-0 loss to Japan in the Asia Cup Under-19 group qualification.

Instead of focusing on the improvement of national team’s performance, the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) shocked the world by submitting a bid to host the 2022 World Cup. PSSI chairman Nurdin Halid hinted that the bidding would cost US$24 million — too much for a country that never wins.

However, Indonesia is still fortunate to have Chris John. At least the boxer brought good news to sports enthusiasts with his victories.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion successfully defended his title after beating Rocky Juarez of the United States in a rematch in Las Vegas last September. It was his 12th successful title defense since winning the belt from Oscar Leon of Colombia in Bali six years ago.
Chris “The Dragon” John, Indonesia’s third world champion, is tipped to compete as an undercard in

the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight on March 13, 2010, Bola sports tabloid reported.

Should that happen, it will be a memorable moment for Chris John, who admires Pacquiao’s achievement in the welterweight division of the World Boxing Organization (WBO). The 30-year-old Filipino just defeated Miguel Angel Cotto last month and has already joined the ranks of the big names in the boxing arena, being touted as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Yamaha Take Final World Endurance Victory and Claim the Manufacturer's Title

The Yamaha Austria Racing Team took yet another race win last weekend at the 8h of Doha, Qatar for the final round of the 2009 FIM World Endurance Championship.

The impressive ride to victory by YART riders Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani, who led the entire race from the first lap, gave Yamaha enough points to claim the 2009 FIM World Endurance Manufacturer title. The Team had already sealed the championship title at the previous round in September but kept the pressure on for the final race to take a clean sweep for Yamaha to add to their already impressive list of world championship title wins this year.

"We had some problems at the Bol d'Or round and Suzuki passed us in the manufacturer's championship standings," said YART Team Manager Mandy Kainz. "So we came here to Qatar to win. The race was perfect, there were no mistakes and it was a good weekend for us, as it was usually over the year! We also wanted to finish on the podium on Sunday, it was the best way to finish the year."

Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Riders Wrap a Successful Test in Valencia

The all British line up of Cal Crutchlow and James Toseland wrapped up a successful final day of testing in Valencia this afternoon. Both Crutchlow and Toseland had spent the two day test at the Ricardo Tormo circuit working through electronic and chassis settings on their R1 superbikes ahead of the 2010 season next year.

Day two saw big improvements from both riders as the times came down, covering some 60 laps each, despite neither of them getting the opportunity to take advantage of the faster tyres towards the end of the day. They will now head home for Christmas before joining up with their new team again in Portugal in January for the first test of 2010 at the Portimao circuit in the Algarve.

"Today was even better than the first day, we worked through a lot more settings in the sessions. I'm disappointed with my final time though as I think I could have been fastest at the end of the day but I didn't get a chance to use the fastest tyre. I'm happy enough with my overall pace and consistency. We've still more to do so I'm looking forward to getting back on the bike in January and keeping up the development."

I'm getting used to the way of riding the bike and getting confident with the team as well. I think if we had a race tomorrow we'd be in with a shout!"

Indonesian team suffers on last day

Indonesian cycling team failed to maintain their gold winning run from the SEA Games’ opening day, pulling up blank on the last day of the competition on Monday.

The red-and-white squad fell far short of podium spots both in the men’s and women’s road races at the Done Noone Village in Muang Saythany, Vientiane.

Santia Tri Kusuma finished best in the women’s team in fifth place. The other members are Dahlina Rosyda, Nurhayati, and Yanthi Fuchianty.

“They sprinted too early within the distance of 1-kilometer prior to finish line. They should have started the sprint race at a distance of 150 meters instead,” team official Sofyan Ruzian said.

Jutatip Maneephan of Thailand won the gold in 3:36.33 for the some 116.1-km track, followed by Malaysian Nor Azian Alias and Vietnamese Thuy Trang Phan.

Dahlina said they languished nearing to the finish line while their opponents kept excelling.

“I am aware that my specialty is in climbing, not in sprinting. I did my best to sprint in the last 10-km but the other teams excelled in the last 1-km before the finish line,” said Dahlina, who finished the race in 15th position.

“I have to admit, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam’s teams are much stronger than our team,” said coach Wahyudi Hidayat.

Their men’s team also looked drained of the energy needed to attack the field.

Vietnam made a one-two finish with Bui Minh Thuy winning the gold medal and Mai Nguyen Hung the silver. Mohd Zamri Saleh followed behind to take the bronze.

Indonesian top cyclist Ryan Ariehaan failed to equal golden run from the day before, crossing the finish line in eighth place. He led fellow Indonesian Tonton Susanto to a one-two in the 40-km individual time trial on Sunday.

His was the third and proved last gold medal, far behind the target of six Indonesia, which won five two years ago, had been vying for.

The other gold medals for the team came from the men’s and women’s downhill at the start of the cycling event, courtesy of Popo Ariyo Sejati and Risa Suseanty.

Thailand collected the same number of golds as Indonesia but scooped up five silver medals compared to Indonesia’s one. Vietnam grabbed the remaining two gold medals on offer in the cycling.

Wembley Stadium - The Heart of English Football

It's not that long ago, really, that the only football matches played at Wembley were England internationals and FA Cup Finals. Then the League Cup Final, in 1967, between QPR and WBA was played at the stadium instead of being a two-legged tie.

Now, of course, football matches held at Wembley Stadium are no longer such a novelty – and they are also, thankfully, a much better experience for the spectator.

Now I'm not deriding the old Empire Stadium, as it was officially known, as it hosted some wonderful matches during its three quarters of a century. But even its most ardent supporters must admit that it was showing its age – to such an extent that more than just a 'facelift' was required to bring it into the twenty first century. When it was changed into an all-seater stadium, some of the seating put in had awful views and no leg room and, if you wanted to go to the toilet you had to be prepared to miss a good part of the match. Walking round the concourse beneath the stands really was like going back fifty years.

Not any more! The 'new' Wembley – or the 'almost new' Wembley now, I suppose we should call it, is a magnificent experience.

Let's face it, anyone who has been to Old Trafford, the Emirates Stadium, Eastlands or similar state-of-the-art football grounds, will have high expectations nowadays. Grounds such as these have set remarkably high standards – there can't be any European countries with as many wonderful stadiums. And Wembley loses nothing in comparison with any of them.

One of only five stadiums that FIFA has given a Five Star rating, Wembley is the second largest ground in Europe. Only Barcelona's Nou Camp holds more spectators than Wembley's 90,000 and I know where I'd rather be watching a match in the pouring rain! All seats at Wembley are undercover and the leg room now is such that you don't have to sit with your knees almost touching your nose all game.

And as for the toilets – well, I'll just say that I've been in Five Star hotels with less impressive facilities. And, with over two and a half thousand around the ground, you've almost got time to nip to the loo while a substitution is being made.

A lot was made of the inadequacies of the Wembley pitch for a while – the FA Cup semi-finalists in 2009 being especially critical. By the time the end of season round of Play Offs, internationals and the FA Cup Final itself came round, though, it had begun to look as if the initial teething problems had been dealt with.

The 'new' Wembley Stadium had to accept a good deal of criticism in the construction days. Spiralling budgets and missed deadlines led to an undisguised scepticism from many journalists and football supporters.

Now that people have been to the stadium, though, and enjoyed matches there, there can be little doubt that the whole experience has been a massive success.

If you've not been to Wembley yet, then take in a match as soon as you can. It would probably be best to use public transport to get there – Wembley Park and Wembley Central Underground stations and Wembley railway Station are all an easy walk away – and as soon as you see that magnifient arch towering above, you'll know you're in for a wonderful experience.

Frank Lampard

Few people who have won 76 caps for England, scoring 20 goals in the process, have divided the nation’s football fans as much as FJustify Fullrank Lampard. Lamps, if you’re a fan; Fat Frank, if you’re not.

Not many England players have actually been booed by the Wembley crowd whilst they’re representing their country - John Barnes in 1994 and Ashley Cole more recently come to mind. It happened to Frank Lampard, though, in a qualifying match against Estonia in October, 2007.

And yet this was a player who had been selected in the Team of the Tournament at Euro 2004, as well as being runner-up the year later as both FIFA World Player of the Year and European Footballer of the Year.

However, having to prove points to his own team’s followers has always seemed to be a part of the game for Frank Lampard. Born 31 years ago into a modern footballing dynasty - his dad was an England full back and won the FA Cup twice with West Ham and his uncle is Harry Redknapp - Lampard firstly had to prove his worth to some sceptical West Ham fans who thought he had his place in the first team more through nepotism than playing ability. Even after 148 games, with 24 goals, there were still some who questioned his worth. It was at this time that the Fat Frank epithet became quite commonly heard, despite the player’s obviously phenomenal ability to run up and down the pitch non-stop for 90 minutes.

An academically very bright young man - he famously acquired an A Grade in his Latin GCSE - it was probably for the best when, in 2001, he eventually moved across London to join Chelsea - making West Ham more than £11 million. By this time he had already represented England at full international level and this move enabled Frank Lampard to undoubtedly establish himself as one of Europe’s best midfield players.

During his time at Chelsea, Lampard has been an ever-present first choice and has always been admired by the club’s successive managers. Supporters, of course, will talk mostly of his goals - he has so far scored 136 in all competitions. Only legends Bobby Tambling, Kerry Dixon, Roy Bentley and Peter Osgood have scored more for the club than Lampard who is, don’t forget, primarily a midfield player. His game is far more than just being a goalscorer, though. Never afraid to tackle, track back and do the unglamorous parts of a midfielder’s job, his combative nature is matched by a calm temperament on the pitch; a calmness that no doubt has helped him become one of the English game’s most reliable penalty takers.

Frank rose in the estimation of many people when he handled the tragic loss of his mother in such a dignified manner in April 2008, and in the unashamed way he has remembered her in his goal celebrations since then.

In his time at Chelsea, Frank has won every honour in the domestic game, as well as being Chelsea’s Player of the Year on three occasions, England Player of the Year and Barclays Player of the Year twice. He will now be hoping to make this season the most memorable of his career by helping Chelsea win their first Champions’ league trophy and perhaps be part of an England squad that makes it past the Quarter Finals of the 2010 World Cup next summer.

If he’s successful, those Fat Frank jibes will seem like a very distant memory.
